Chapter 27: Blazing Passion
“What are you looking at! What are you looking at!” Dilys stepped forward with a keen sense of the situation. “Is all the work done?”
The servants in the manor who were watching the show were quickly dispersed from the front yard to the backyard by her.
She then walked over to Herlkin and, in just a few sentences, explained Lina’s illness clearly.
Finally, Dilys pulled Adele, who had fallen into the flowerbed, out, grabbed the still-feigning-illness Lina, and ran to a distant patch of grass. She felt like a world war was about to break out.
“Hehe.” Herlkin, having learned the “truth,” gave an awkward laugh. “Are you… alright?”
Adele shook her head. Bits of grass fell out. There were still several small yellow flowers stuck in her hair. She wished she could whip the person before her with her tail too. “What do you think?”
“Oh, it’s all a misunderstanding.” Herlkin said, rummaging through her bag, “I’ll treat you to a sausage. That should be fine, right?”
“…” Adele was silent, only picking the flowers from her hair.
Herlkin took out a sausage as thick as an arm. “This is the good stuff.”
The applewood-smoked sausage exuded a scent that was tempting to a wolf.
The little white wolf inside Adele instantly took a deep breath. “Pure meat?”
“An expert, I see.” Herlkin handed it to her, looking as if she were parting with a beloved treasure. “For you.”
Adele’s face showed reluctance, but her action was:
Grab it!
Herlkin: ?
“Alright, I forgive you.” Adele was already overcome by the meat.
The most fundamental difference between mixed-blood humans and pure-blood humans was that they still retained their animal habits. Some were afraid of light, some liked the cold, and some just liked to eat meat.
“Pinky swear,” Herlkin said.
Adele: ?
She couldn’t win against Herlkin. For the sake of the sausage, the two of them made up like children with a pinky swear.
Dilys had been watching them the whole time. Seeing that the tense atmosphere had passed, she asked in a small voice, “Miss, should we continue to pretend?”
Lina didn’t even think about it. “Of course, we have to keep pretending.”
Dilys nodded obediently. “As you wish.”
While the master and servant were whispering and plotting, Herlkin’s face was full of worry.
“Huaguang has a headache. I know someone who can cure it. I just got the medicine, but I was stabbed on the road, and in the blink of an eye, the medicine was gone! And now Lina has this hysteria. It’s really one misfortune after another!”
Adele pondered for a moment and said, “Losing the medicine might not be a bad thing. After you left, I met with Huaguang. She’s far more suspicious than we imagined. Suddenly giving her the medicine might backfire.”
Herlkin’s mind turned. “Are you afraid that she’s too suspicious and will hate being second-guessed?”
“It’s very possible. Besides, no one wants to have eyes watching them.” Adele turned to her. “Is your injury serious?”
Before Herlkin could answer, a very rapid ringing of a bell came from the entrance.
Her fur stood on end in an instant, and her two ears popped out uncontrollably.
Lina and the others also followed the sound and saw a slender figure appear out of thin air after a puff of white smoke dissipated.
It seemed to be a woman.
She was wrapped in a dark red cloak, the hood pulled down very low, revealing only a section of her snow-white jawline.
A gust of wind inexplicably rose on the open ground. In the blink of an eye, the woman was in front of Herlkin.
“A ghost!” Dilys turned and ran. After running two steps, she turned back, hoisted Lina up, and hid behind a large tree. “Don’t be afraid, Miss… don’t be afraid, I’ll protect you… don’t be afraid…”
Lina: “…”
Who’s the one who’s scared?
That was clearly a person with a shadow.
Lina looked at the trembling little girl beside her, feeling both amused and speechless.
Dilys’s courage was still only the size of a sesame seed, easily frightened.
The other person trembling was Herlkin.
She took a hasty step back and almost fell to her knees on the grass, her legs going weak.
That arrogant, disdainful, flamboyant air had completely dissipated. At this moment, she was just a little fox at the mercy of others.
“Xiao Jin, didn’t you promise me that you would take good care of yourself?”
The woman took off her cloak, revealing an extremely young face, seemingly about the same age as most of the people present, in their early twenties.
But her deep gray eyes held a calmness and composure that didn’t match her age.
Only Herlkin knew that she was already over a hundred years old.
“I… I’m fine…” Herlkin forced a smile. She felt her cover-up was so clumsy, so pale.
In front of this person, she was like she was naked, from head to toe, with no secrets.
The woman’s face turned slightly cold. She took another step closer. “I smell blood.”
“Teacher… let me explain…” Herlkin’s mouth wanted to explain, but her feet wanted to run.
But before she could gather her strength, the woman grabbed her by the ear.
“Ow—”
“You should know the consequences of running away.”
At this point, even Dilys was no longer afraid. She poked her head out and began to watch the drama unfold.
Running away?
She flees, she pursues?
Lina was also watching closely.
Is she here to catch someone?
Is the next step to tie them up and take them back? Then lock them in the basement?
As she thought, her gaze flew to Adele.
A person who runs away without permission is not being good and should be dealt with properly.
Teacher, please don’t be like Aunt. Even if you run to the ends of the earth, I will find you…
“Ouch.” Herlkin covered her face. “Please give me some face.”
The woman temporarily let her go and turned to the person who was avoiding her gaze, who knew her place and knew not to look at what was improper—Adele.
“Hello, my name is Aomo. I’m a witch.”
Just as Adele was about to introduce herself, Aomo’s animal skin pouch suddenly began to tremble violently.
A moment later, a crystal ball flew out. A light purple smoke appeared out of thin air inside the crystal-clear sphere.
What was even stranger was that the smoke once again condensed into the shape of wolf ears.
Aomo looked at Adele, said nothing, and only stated, “I want to treat Xiao Jin’s injuries. May I borrow a room in this manor for a few days?”
“Of course.”
Aomo quickly dragged Herlkin away. Adele stood in place, her mind uneasy.
What did the wolf ears in the crystal ball mean?
Could it be related to her?
Lina and Dilys didn’t see it due to their angle.
Dilys was enjoying the show.
Lina, on the other hand, was immersed in certain amorous, forceful fantasies. In her mind, she had already devoured Adele a thousand times over.
From top to bottom, from inside to out.
The three of them had different thoughts. No one noticed that in a dense forest outside the manor, there was another pair of eyes.
Haia had taken in everything that had happened in the courtyard.
“Herlkin…” Her lips twitched, her whole being seeming to be repressed to the extreme. “Teacher really cares about you… and you’re enjoying it, aren’t you…”
*
The night was deep.
A sleeping Adele suddenly curled up.
Lina had been admiring the nape of her neck. At this moment, she also sensed something was wrong. She propped her head up slightly. To her surprise, she saw Adele’s vulnerable side.
She seemed to be in great pain, tears streaming down her face.
“Let… let her go…”
Lina moved closer. She wanted to hear Adele’s sleep-talking clearly, but the next second, she was pulled into her arms.
Lina: !
Adele wasn’t awake, just repeating three words—
Let her go.
A person in the grip of a nightmare doesn’t know their own strength. To describe it as a hug was not accurate. It was more like a pinching and squeezing, with so much force that it seemed she wanted to crush the person.
Lina’s fragile skin was instantly reddened.
She sucked in a sharp breath and trembled slightly in pain.
Adele was still using force. The tightening arms made it difficult for Lina to breathe.
Anyone else might have struggled, might have screamed in panic. But Lina didn’t.
Instead, she began to enjoy the pain.
Lina began to imagine that Adele was awake.
Awake, she had pulled her into her arms, awake, she had memorized her features, awake, she had possessed her.
This process should not be too gentle, too restrained.
A person who lacks a sense of security must feel the other’s intense possessiveness and desire to feel at ease.
Having her wrists held down, her neck squeezed… all of it was fine. She needed a fierce love.
The more out of control, the better.
Strangle me.
Choke me to death.
Let me die in your hands. When our flesh and blood merge, we will never be separated again…
Lina had no time to explore whether her psychology was twisted. She just wanted Adele to be rougher.
Possess me completely, let me feel your desire for me…
Adele, who was completely trapped in the nightmare, couldn’t hear her thoughts. Her whole body was soaked in cold sweat.
The sky in the nightmare was the color of old-fashioned paper money, a yellow that made one’s hair stand on end.
“Let her go…”
Of Adele’s entire body, only her mouth could barely make a sound. Her limbs were completely immobile, and even her eyeballs couldn’t turn.
Right in front of her was a sacrificial altar!
The entire altar was built of damp firewood. This firewood had been soaked in oil. Just a tiny spark could start a raging fire.
And the person tied to the altar was Lina!
Adele’s eyes were wide with rage. She used all her strength to get closer but was held back by an invisible force, completely unable to move.
Lina was wrapped in a pure white sacred robe, her small face almost deathly pale. She had cried her eyes red, and tears streamed down her face, each drop hitting Adele’s heart.
“Let her go… let her go…”
Besides repeating these three words, Adele could do nothing. A huge sense of powerlessness weighed on her heart. She was about to cough up blood. And the people around her?
The followers of the Sacred Cult were all kneeling near the altar, muttering, their words never straying from “eternal life,” yet they were blind to the life before them. The other onlookers all had wooden expressions.
No one cared about Lina’s life or death!
No one cared!
Boundless fear swallowed Adele in an instant. Her eyes were bloodshot. She stared at the group of murderers before her, her hatred reaching its peak at this moment.
A bunch of madmen! A bunch of numb, unfeeling madmen!
Adele watched as the prayer ended and the leader raised a torch.
“No!”
Before she could finish, a woman pushed through the crowd and rushed toward the altar like a madwoman.
“Let her go! Let go of my lover!”
The guards immediately blocked her. The woman crashed right through them and into the center of the ceremony.
More guards rushed up. They were holding iron bars. The dull thuds couldn’t cover the woman’s roars.
Blood streamed down from her head, staining half of her face red. But she seemed to feel no pain and continued to charge toward the altar.
“Lina! Don’t be afraid! I will save you!”
Lina was gagged with a silk scarf and could only make muffled sounds. She watched the woman who stood up again and again, only to be knocked down again and again, and finally let out a desperate wail.
No—
Don’t worry about me!
The turn of events was too sudden. Adele was stunned for a moment before she reacted.
Who was that woman?
Did she just say Lina was her lover?
Lover!?
Adele tried to see the woman’s face clearly but could only see fists and clubs raining down.
After the woman was knocked down again, her breath was as thin as a thread.
The followers of the Sacred Cult didn’t wait for her to get up again. They threw the torch directly into the pile of firewood. The oil-soaked wood burst into flames with a “whoosh.”
“No!”
“No!”
Two roars sounded at the same time.
Adele still couldn’t move. She watched as thick smoke billowed up. Lina’s expression was pained from the smoke, and she coughed incessantly.
And the woman lying on the ground, with a strength from who knows where, got up again and rushed straight into the sea of fire. Her figure was so determined, she threw herself onto Lina with a conviction of certain death.
The flames first ignited her dress.
But the woman didn’t let go. She held Lina tightly. The figures of the two women were completely swallowed by the thick smoke and flames.
Tears streamed down Adele’s face. The smell of burning flesh filled the air. She only felt utterly disgusted.
Retch—
She kept retching, dry heaving until her vision went black, her whole body trembling like a sieve.
“Adele.”
“Adele.”
Adele heard someone calling her. She forced back her nausea and looked up, only to see the woman on the altar slowly turn her head and stare at her in the raging fire.
“Ahhhh!”
Adele let out a piercing scream.
That face was too terrifying. The burned skin slowly peeled off in front of her.
What was even more horrifying was that she saw the woman’s face clearly! Just from the features, she looked exactly like her!
“Find it! Go find it!”
It was that sentence again.
The madwoman who had appeared in her life several times also often muttered this sentence.
What on earth was she supposed to find!?
What on earth was going on!?
Adele clutched her head in pain.
Just then, someone tapped her on the shoulder.
Adele turned her head. It was just who she was thinking of. The madwoman appeared out of thin air in front of her, as disheveled and blood-stained as ever.
Adele looked at the blood-soaked dress on her and, as if thinking of something, abruptly turned her head—
The dress of the person who had thrown herself at Lina was exactly the same as this madwoman’s!
So…
Adele fell to the ground. She looked at the madwoman’s face, which was burned beyond recognition, and a bold idea arose in her heart.
Could it be that this madwoman in front of her was the version of herself who had rushed into the fire to save Lina!?
Adele screamed in terror for the second time and finally broke free from the nightmare. She snapped her eyes open, her breathing chaotic.
“Teacher?”
Lina’s voice was so gentle. Adele looked at those blue eyes and felt as if she had gotten her back from the dead.
She could no longer hold back. She buried her face in the crook of Lina’s neck. “Don’t leave me.”
Scalding tears flowed into her collar. Lina was stunned at first, then a wild joy surged in her eyes. “I will never leave Teacher. Teacher, don’t leave me either, okay?”
Adele held her tightly. In the lop-eared rabbit’s embrace, her heart was pounding like a drum. She choked out, “I won’t leave you, and I won’t let anyone hurt you. Never.”
The rabbit ball’s heartbeat was so chaotic. Adele felt her excitement but was no longer panicked.
Love me, Lina. Love me, stay by my side, and always listen to me…
Okay?
After this nightmare, or rather, this trauma, Adele once again developed an unprecedented desire to control Lina.
It was as if only by holding Lina in her hands, by confining her before her eyes, could she ensure her safety.
Lina was burned by her body temperature. She keenly sensed her unease and said, “Teacher, did you have a nightmare?”
“It’s nothing.” Adele’s voice was muffled. “Just stay by my side, and it will be fine.”
“I will be obedient.” Lina said, half-joking, half-serious, “If that’s not enough, you can put a chain on me.”
Put a chain on her and tie her up.
“Mhm…” Adele reacted a moment later and looked up. “Hmm? What chain?”
Lina had been in the study during this time, reading a basketful of books, both proper and improper.
“It’s nothing.” Lina very naturally wiped the tears from Adele’s face. The pad of her finger stopped near her lips, rubbing lightly.
It was like a comfort, and also like a flirtation.
Although Adele was still in shock, at this moment, she was exceptionally clear-headed.
It wasn’t that she wasn’t rational; she just didn’t want to be rational anymore.
Lina’s gaze fell on her lips. Her aggressive gaze was wrapped in a primal desire. It was self-evident what the little rabbit meant.
Adele’s gaze grew dark, also tinged with desire.
Lina moved closer, their breaths almost mingling.
Adele trembled, preparing to receive her kiss.
But Lina took the initiative to pull away, not taking a further step.
Adele: ?
“You’re all sweaty. It’s uncomfortable to be wet, and it’s not good to catch a cold. You should go take a shower first.” Lina brushed the stray hairs from her temple, hiding all her wicked intentions under a submissive and obedient mask. “I’ll wait for you to come back.”
She wanted to kiss her. She was going crazy with the desire.
But she didn’t want to kiss her now. She also wanted Adele to desire her just as much.
They had to wait until they had both become lecherous fiends, tearing at each other in the waves of desire, to become even more intimate.
What Lina wanted was never just a kiss. She wanted Adele herself, her heart.
She wanted all of her!
Even if the temporary endurance was very painful, it was worth it.
Lina watched Adele walk into the bathroom, her gaze growing even more frantic.
The bruises on her arm, from where Adele had squeezed her, were aching faintly. She glanced down at them, not only did she not apply any medicine, but she also pressed on the bruises.
Harder, and harder.
Lina stared at the bathroom door.
It hurts so much.
But it also feels so good.
Teacher, I like everything you give me.
We should be entangled forever.
Forever.
…
Another room in the manor was also not dark.
A red fox was running around in a frenzy, finally being cornered by a woman. She shrank in the corner, trembling, and grabbed her own fluffy ears. “I was wrong! I’ll never do anything dangerous again! I was wrong—”
Aomo conjured a cane out of thin air.
“Too late.”
She rolled up her sleeves and tapped the bed with the cane. “You know the rules. I’ll count to three. If you’re not lying down properly…”
Before Aomo could finish, a certain fox was already lying down.
Herlkin covered her bottom. “Can’t we discuss this a little more? I’m not a child anymore…”
So shameful.
“Ow—”
*
The labor bureau had a branch in every city. Besides the reception area, which was a small building made of bricks and tiles, the rest of the area, enclosed by a wire fence, had only low-lying shacks.
The only difference from a concentration camp was that the working hours here were longer.
The shacks were built of construction waste and straw, with wind blowing through from all sides and rain leaking from the top. Even so, the inside was still filled with a stench. The sour smell of sweat was the top note. The torn socks standing upright added a stimulating touch to the damp, musty smell. If one took a deep breath, one could also feel the fishy smell of the base note…
There were no public toilets here. Eating, drinking, and relieving oneself all happened in the same place.
On both sides of the narrow passage were communal bunks made of wooden planks. These planks were also stripped from abandoned buildings. They were uneven and covered with stains like paint. Covered with a thin layer of rags, they became “beds.”
A room usually had to sleep forty to fifty people.
The people who were desperately exploited all had sunken eyes and sallow complexions. They curled up on the beds, counting the time until they died.
“Everyone, get to sleep early!”
The warden, holding an iron bar, banged on the door, which already had a large hole in it. Her lion-like roar scared everyone into silence.
There were no windows in the shacks. Fortunately, there were gaps between the planks. But at this moment, it was pitch black outside. The night was as thick as ink, and not a single ray of starlight could penetrate. The sound of coughing was mixed with the sobs of those who couldn’t bear the pain.
It was suffocating.
“If anyone can’t get up tomorrow! We’ll see how I deal with you!”
She was about to leave when suddenly, a figure darted out from a corner!
“Let me out! I was framed!”
“I want to sue Lina!”
