Chapter 34: Overturned p1
The constables crashed through the manor gate and swarmed in like wild dogs. Their target was clear. As if they had seen Lina before, they all rushed toward her.
Lina turned her head at the sound. She stood her ground, her expression unchanged, only quietly retracting the tail that had been trying to tempt Adele.
The next second, she was swallowed by a rush of figures.
The constables were rough, clamping down on her shoulders and forcing her down without a word, as if they wanted to nail her to the ground.
Lina did not resist and knelt down with the momentum. She lowered her head slightly, her expression unreadable.
The maids’ screams, the constables’ sharp shouts, and the incessant barking of dogs all mixed together. Although Lina was kneeling, she was the calmest one.
In her eyes, the world at this moment had become a giant sand table, and she was the one conducting the deduction. The surrounding clamor seemed to be a world away, having nothing to do with her.
She became completely still.
The head of the constables, with a fleshy face, shouted gruffly, “Look up!”
Only then did Lina slowly raise her eyes. Her gaze was calm, showing no fear, no humiliation.
The moment their eyes met, the head constable’s surging anger inexplicably faltered, like a stone sinking into a deep pool. It disappeared without a trace, without even a splash.
Lina looked up at him, at the people from the Asset Appraisal Bureau. She had once been used to looking at people from this angle.
Kneeling was a common occurrence.
But now, she had been spoiled by Adele and had become more and more delicate. She could only accept kneeling during lovemaking.
Adele and the others were roughly pushed against the wall by the other constables.
“Let her go!”
Adele was held back by four or five constables and couldn’t rush forward at all.
An intense feeling of powerlessness was like a steel hammer, striking her skull hundreds of times in just a few short moments.
Some fragmented memories were knocked out. Her ears were ringing. It was as if she were back in the dream. The great fire at the sacrificial ceremony seemed to have burned her, the intense pain forcing a cold sweat to break out.
Adele trembled all over. She began to panic.
Could it be that the nightmare was really a preview of reality!?
Could it be that she really couldn’t change the ending of Lina being burned to death!?
Adele began to have difficulty breathing, her face turning purple. The scattered memories quickly pieced themselves together amidst her increasingly heavy breathing.
There was a farm with birds and flowers, a Lina who was forcibly dragged away, a monastery filled with thick smoke…
But she couldn’t connect these memories. Her thoughts were in a mess. She felt like she was suffocating.
Adele’s legs went weak. She staggered back half a step. Haia caught her.
The feeling of sweat reached her palm. Haia keenly sensed Adele’s abnormality.
“Can you hear me?”
Adele didn’t respond.
She could actually hear. Not only could she hear Haia’s voice, but she could also hear the constables’ arrogant curses…
She even heard the crackling of the damp firewood being lit, the sizzling of skin being burned, and…
And Lina’s desperate cries!
Adele suddenly came to her senses, gasping for air. She was already drenched in sweat. She felt a pressure on her arm. She looked over and saw that Haia had pinched her pressure point.
“Deep breaths. You’re having a stress response.” Haia gestured with her hand to the rhythm of breathing and said in a small voice, “Herlkin has already slipped out. Her people are nearby. Don’t worry.”
Adele’s breathing was chaotic. She looked and indeed saw that Aomo and Herlkin were gone.
Aomo could teleport. It must have been her who had taken them away.
Adele said, “You should have gone with them. It’s not safe to stay here.”
Haia’s eyes changed several times.
She was always the one left behind.
She was used to it.
“I’m a physician. How can I see someone dying and not save them?” Haia pretended to be calm and composed, comforting her, “It will be fine. They’ll be back soon.”
On the other side.
“Didn’t expect this, little girl.” The director of the Asset Appraisal Bureau, a pot-bellied middle-aged man, walked up to Lina. “You thought you could have all the property to yourself by killing your own father? You’re too naive.”
“I really didn’t expect that he would hate me to this extent, to the point of rather offering the money to you bunch of scoundrel officials.” Lina stared at his face. “Do you really think you can take this money?”
Hearing the words “scoundrel officials,” the middle-aged man was so angry he was about to slap Lina. Just as Adele’s voice of protest came out, the ground of the manor suddenly began to shake. Then, a group of royal guards marched in with uniform steps, swarming into the manor.
Two columns of soldiers quickly surrounded everyone. The sound of their boot heels hitting the ground made one’s heart tremble with every step.
They wore bright red short jackets. Two rows of large golden buttons symbolized the inviolable dignity of the royal family. Their faces, like stone carvings, were expressionless and faced the same direction. With just one order, their swords would be drawn at the same time, and all the rebels would be chopped into mincemeat.
The solemn and dignified atmosphere was suffocating.
The head of the constables was the first to recognize the insignia on them.
They were Huaguang’s people!
The color drained from his greasy face. He almost instinctively retreated, and along with his minions, he hastily shrank into a corner.
Adele and Haia looked on in amazement. The hand of the director of the Asset Appraisal Bureau, which had been about to slap Lina, froze in mid-air. After all, he was a man of the officialdom. He subconsciously looked at Lina.
A plan within a plan!?
Lina stood up unhurriedly. She patted the dust from her knees, a smile slowly blooming in her blue eyes.
You’re finished.
Herte is finished.
All who oppose me are finished.
The guards finished clearing the area, leaving a wide path. From the depths of the night, two tall figures walked forward, one after the other.
On the continent of Dezhou, no one did not know Huaguang.
And the silver-masked knight behind her, no one did not know her either.
“Your Highness.” Lina met Huaguang’s eyes, her memory pulled back to a few days ago.
…
“I called you here alone. Do you know why?” Huaguang sat in the secret room.
Lina knelt and said, “I don’t know.”
Huaguang leaned forward slightly. “Do you want me to choose you on the Monastery Open Day?”
Lina’s heart was pounding like a drum. Facing Huaguang’s eyes, she felt that her immature little schemes had nowhere to hide.
“I…”
Huaguang lifted her face. “I want to hear the truth.”
“I beg Your Highness to save me.” In a breath, Lina’s eyes turned red. “I don’t want to be a sacrificial offering. I beg you to choose me.”
She guessed that an old hand like Huaguang must have already investigated her thoroughly.
Blindly lying would only be counterproductive.
She had to be honest about the facts, but also perform subjectively.
She had to arouse Huaguang’s sympathy to the greatest extent, and also send the signal that she was easy to handle.
She was not betting on Huaguang’s kindness; she was betting on Huaguang’s pragmatism.
Once Herte was dead, she would be the heir to a huge fortune, with a commercial network completely independent of the court. She could become Huaguang’s money bag in her usurpation of the throne.
This was a very good deal.
“What can you do for me?”
“As long as it’s something I can do, I’m willing.”
“But I already have a good, handy knife.” Yuan You stood behind Huaguang.
Lina followed her gaze. Yuan You’s whole body was a cold silver, but the hilt of her sword was wrapped in a circle of pink silk, the same material as the half-sleeve cuff that Huaguang revealed.
Her extreme sensitivity came into play again. Lina looked at Huaguang again. The high and mighty princess, when she sat down, her shoulder unconsciously leaned in Yuan You’s direction.
Was it a subconscious closeness?
Were the two of them just master and servant?
In an instant, Lina was almost certain that even if the two of them had no special relationship, Yuan You must be a very important confidante of Huaguang’s.
She said, “A good knife shouldn’t be dirtied.”
“Haha.” Huaguang laughed, then asked, “What do you want?”
“I want to live.”
“That’s it?”
A person with no desires is not easy to handle. When Lina chose Dilys, it was largely because she loved money as much as her life.
So Lina said, “I also want to protect the one I love.”
She didn’t ask for money, nor for power. What she wanted was a true heart.
Huaguang was stunned for a moment. It had been a long time since she had heard the words “true heart.”
She had a natural sympathy for this rabbit sister, whose circumstances were similar to her own.
“Alright, I’ll save you.”
…
“Lina, come here.” Huaguang held out her hand and called Lina to her side. She took out a handkerchief and gently wiped the blood from the rabbit ball’s face. “From now on, just have the servants do these things. Don’t dirty your own hands. If anyone makes you unhappy, just tell me, and I’ll chop off their dog heads.”
“Okay.” Lina stood obediently by Huaguang’s side, but her eyes kept glancing at Adele.
At this point, anyone with eyes could see that Huaguang and Lina had long had a private connection.
Lina believed that Adele was not stupid either.
But she was very worried—
Would Teacher dislike her for being cunning?
Would Teacher think she was a vicious rabbit?
Lina was so apprehensive that she only came to her senses when the director of the Asset Appraisal Bureau knelt before her.
“I’ve long heard that some people bend the law for personal gain, using their positions to amass wealth. It seems the rumors are not false.”
Huaguang convicted him with a high-sounding reason.
