Chapter 63: Episode
The room was pitch black.
Haia casually put down her medical bag and teased, “Having another episode? Or have you come up with some other dirty trick to fool people? Let me tell you, my house calls at night are very expensive. This trip… you’ll have to give me at least 300,000 pounds.”
Lina did not retort as usual, nor did she throw a pillow at her.
The only response to Haia was silence.
She frowned slightly, the smile on her face gradually fading. She probed, “Lina?”
Still no response.
Haia walked to the bed, only to find that it was empty.
Suddenly, a faint sobbing sound came from under the bed.
Haia’s expression immediately became serious. She slowly squatted down, lifted a corner of the bedsheet, and by the faint light from outside the window, she saw Lina curled up in the deepest part of the under-bed space.
The little rabbit had shrunk herself into a tiny ball, her hands tightly clutching her head, her body trembling uncontrollably.
Perhaps it was the sound of Haia’s breathing, or the cool moonlight, but she was stimulated again, choking out a broken plea.
“Don’t hit me… don’t bully me… please…”
Haia had never heard such a terrified, such a desperate voice from Lina. She had seen too many patients. In an instant, she was sure that this was not an act.
Lina was really scared.
On the way here, Dilys had already told her what had happened two days ago. To witness a bloody death firsthand could easily trigger those unresolved emotions.
She had also heard about Lina’s past. A person who had lived in a high-pressure environment for a long time and had suffered long-term abuse was very likely to have complex post-traumatic stress disorder, or C-PTSD.
The patient’s emotions would be very unstable. One second they could be in a rage, the next they might be completely blank. It was also very difficult for the patient to trust others. After establishing an intimate relationship, it could also turn into an over-dependence, and even unconsciously enter a masochistic mode, into the pain she was “accustomed” to.
This type of person often thinks that they are bad, that they are not worthy of being loved. When happiness comes, they are like a frozen person suddenly coming into contact with warm water. The first reaction is not warmth, but a stinging pain, a feeling of being at a loss.
Haia lightened her breathing. She carefully observed Lina’s reaction.
The little rabbit was constantly begging for mercy. Now, she was a high-ranking official. Who would dare to beat her?
That would be a beheading offense.
It was obvious that this was an acute dissociative episode, probably triggered by Dilys’s “death.”
This situation was very dangerous. She was completely immersed in her traumatic memories, having lost her perception of the real environment. In her mind, she was now that unloved, severely abused sacrificial offering.
Haia did not approach rashly, let alone try to pull Lina. Instead, she slowly retreated, creating a safe distance.
She quickly scanned the room and saw a small lamp on the bedside table. She walked over and lit it.
Then she added a lampshade, letting a warm and soft halo of light fall on the floor near the bed, to dispel the gloom, and at the same time, to ensure that it would not directly shine on Lina’s eyes and cause a secondary stimulation.
Haia returned to the bedside. This time, she chose to kneel on the carpet, trying to lower her height as much as possible to reduce the sense of oppression.
Her tone was gentle. “Lina? Can you hear me? I’m a physician. I’m here to help you.”
Lina was still holding her head. Her sobs paused for a moment, but the trembling did not stop.
Haia continued to comfort her. “You don’t need to come out. If you feel safe under the bed, then you can stay there. It’s fine. I promise, I won’t do anything.”
After a short silence, Lina let go of her hands. She raised her face. Before she could speak, tears were already streaming down. Large teardrops rolled down. Her desperate voice was filled with a heartbreaking resignation.
“It’s fine if you want to hit me… I won’t resist. Please… don’t break my bones. That hurts so much, so much… I won’t be able to take it.”
As she spoke, the small, fluffy tail on her bottom was trembling violently.
A sourness welled up in Haia’s heart. How she wished that this time, Lina was also pretending. Even if she used a pillow to beat her, this blackmailer, it would be fine…
Haia stabilized her emotions and showed absolute professionalism. She said patiently, “I won’t do that. I’m a physician. I’m here to save you. I promise you again, I will absolutely not hurt you.”
She turned slightly to the side, so that Lina could see the warm light outside the bed.
“The bad people have all been caught. It’s very, very safe here. Especially this under-bed space you’ve chosen. It looks very sturdy.”
Haia affirmed the “under-bed” as a safe zone, giving Lina a positive affirmation.
The intensity of Lina’s trembling lessened a little. A momentary bewilderment and blankness appeared in her moist, red eyes.
Reality and memory were fighting.
Haia keenly caught this slight loosening. She did not rush to success, did not ask Lina to come out. Instead, she tried to pull Lina’s attention back to her current physical sensations.
“It seems a little cold under the bed, and the floor is a bit hard. Do you feel cold? Do you need a soft blanket? I want to help you.”
Lina’s attention was guided by her words. She really began to feel her body. Her shoulders were indeed aching from the floor, and her limbs were also numb from being curled up for a long time.
She was silent for a few seconds, then slowly nodded.
Agreeing to interact was a good start.
“Okay, I’m going to leave for a little while to get you a blanket. The room is very safe. Don’t be afraid.”
Lina nodded again.
Haia retreated on her knees until she was out of Lina’s line of sight. Only then did she get up, holding her waist, and silently exited the bedroom.
Adele had been waiting at the door. Seeing Haia come out, she said urgently, “How is she?”
Haia said, “She’s been triggered and is now completely trapped in her past traumatic memories.”
Adele fell apart on the spot.
The state of the rabbit ball, who would kneel at the drop of a hat, who would beg for mercy at the drop of a hat—she understood it all too well.
Haia said again, “The precautions, I’ll tell you when I come out. She just agreed to a blanket. This is a good sign. Take off your coat and give it to me. With your warmth and scent, it will definitely make her feel safe.”
Adele immediately did as she was told, watching Haia go in with a worried look.
The room was still very quiet.
Haia took a thick woolen blanket from the cabinet, knelt back by the bed, and said, “I’ve brought the blanket. I won’t get close to you. I’ll push the blanket to a place where you can reach it, okay?”
Lina gave a small “mhm.”
Haia placed the clothes and said softly, “I’ve put the blanket down. If you need it, you can take it in yourself.”
A rustling sound came from under the bed.
After a long while, a trembling hand reached out, tentatively, first grabbing the blanket, then quickly retracting.
After a long moment, the hand reached out again and pulled the blanket in.
Lina covered her cold body with the blanket, and only then did she discover Adele’s coat.
It still had the lingering warmth of its owner, a clear and light fragrance. Her soul was more familiar with it than her sense of smell.
Lina instinctively buried her face deeply in Adele’s coat. In her chaotic mind, a blurry figure appeared.
Baby.
You are my baby.
I love you.
Lina heard a very gentle call. She finally stopped crying, held the coat tightly, and some warm memories gradually emerged…
Haia waited for more than ten minutes. After confirming that Lina’s emotions had temporarily stabilized, she quietly got up and left.
On the other side of the door.
Haia pulled Adele away from the bedroom, then lowered her voice and explained C-PTSD in detail.
“No wonder she was always a little moody in the past, and she often hurt herself…” Adele’s brow furrowed tightly.
“…In short, you know her past experiences. Be a little more patient with the patient. It’s not that she’s unwilling to believe you; it’s that she feels she’s not worthy.”
Adele’s hands were tightly clenched. “I know. What should I do now to help her?”
It’s easy to heal the body, but it’s hard to heal the spirit. Adele had no confidence.
Haia said, “She’s now immersed in her past memories, extremely fragile. In the coming days, you must create an absolutely safe and calm environment for her. Get rid of anything that will remind her of the past.”
She paused and said, “Lina cares most about you.”
Adele nodded without a word.
Haia instructed, “She might repeatedly confirm whether you will leave, whether you will dislike her. You have to constantly reassure her until she is really at ease. You can hug her, touch her. You must not show a single trace of impatience.”
Raising a rabbit requires a lot of care.
You have to be patient with your lover.
Haia mentioned a few more precautions. She looked at Adele’s increasingly pale face and said, “This episode may not be entirely a bad thing. It may be an opportunity for you to see the unhealed wounds deep in her heart.”
Some wounds, if hidden, will only fester. They must be exposed to have a chance to heal.
Adele took a deep breath, trying to digest this information. “I understand. I’ll be careful. Thank you.”
Haia waved her hand. “You’re welcome.”
“Your face, is it really okay?” Adele asked.
Haia subconsciously touched the handprint on her face. Her expression became a little strange. Her eyes darted away for a moment, and she said vaguely, “Uh… it’s a long story…”
Adele had seen the halo of light above the clinic at that time. Haia, Aomo, and Herlkin had also been stolen.
Haia suddenly asked out of the blue, “Do you know what a ‘sandwich cookie’ is?”
Adele was stunned for a moment. At first, she didn’t react. She subconsciously thought it was food. But looking at Haia’s unnatural expression, she abruptly associated it with a certain threesome position…
“This…” Adele said tactfully, “What’s wrong?”
Haia’s face was one of collapse.
At the same time as her memory recovered, she discovered that she was the filling.
Haia said, “Let’s not talk about it. In short, when Lina gets better, I might have to leave this place. This damn place is too absurd…”
Although Adele was shocked, she also knew her limits and did not press further. She suppressed the waves in her heart and said sincerely, “In any case, thank you, Haia. When you’re leaving, you must tell me. I’ll come and see you off.”
Haia gave a bitter smile, nodded, and before leaving, instructed, “I’ll go and prescribe some medicine for her to stabilize her emotions. Taking care of such a patient is also a huge drain on you. Take care of your body.”
“Okay.”
…
After Haia left, Adele went to the kitchen. When she came back, she was holding a plate of steaming muffins, covered in fruit jam.
She remembered Haia’s instructions, took a deep breath, and tried to make her voice sound relaxed and natural.
Adele did not try to peek under the bed, nor did she force Lina to come out. She just gently placed the fragrant plate of muffins in a place where Lina could reach it with her hand.
Then, she also sat down by the plate, her back against the edge of the bed, her legs bent, and quietly looked at the crescent moon outside the window.
“Speaking of which…” she said softly, “this is my first time raising a rabbit.”
A faint rustling sound came from under the bed. Lina had moved.
Adele pretended not to have heard and continued to ramble, “I don’t have much experience. If there’s anything I’ve done wrong, something that makes you uncomfortable, just tell me, okay?”
A hand quietly reached out from under the bed and grabbed a muffin.
Adele caught it in her peripheral vision, and the smile in her eyes grew wider.
It seems that to catch a rabbit, you have to use fruit jam muffins.
The sweet fragrance eased the tense atmosphere. Adele’s thoughts gradually went blank.
Lina held the muffin in both hands and took small bites. She had already recognized that the person sitting by the bed was the owner of the coat.
She wanted to get close but was a little scared. So she pricked up her ears and carefully listened to Adele’s movements.
“Baby, the fact that we’re together is because I took advantage of you. I know you’re very insecure. Actually… me too.”
Adele didn’t know if Lina could understand, but she really wanted to say something.
She had once been a very reserved, very restrained person. Now, facing Lina, she had endless things to say.
Perhaps this is the magic of love.
Adele’s voice was tinged with a sob. “I’ve always been worried that after you’ve seen the wide world, you’ll meet more, better people, and you’ll think I’m nothing special. I…”
She suddenly couldn’t go on. She quickly wiped the corner of her eye with the back of her hand.
Lina’s motion of eating the muffin also paused.
The room was so quiet that only the two of them’s gradually synchronized breathing could be heard.
After a long while, Adele spoke again, her voice as light as a sigh. “Baby, please forgive my despicable nature. Don’t leave me… okay? Please…”
These words gently hit Lina’s heart.
Adele let the tears fall. Suddenly, her left wrist, which was resting on the carpet, was wrapped by a fluffy ear.
The warm and soft touch startled Adele. She lowered her head.
And saw that Lina had, at some point, poked out half her body from under the bed and was looking at her with teary eyes.
A pair of beautiful blue eyes were filled with pity.
She seemed to have used a lot of strength to squeeze out the words from her dry throat.
“Don’t… cry.”
She was sick, didn’t know where she was, didn’t know what her identity was. She had forgotten many things, but she still remembered not to let her lover cry.
“I… won’t… go.”
Lina finished speaking and cautiously sniffed the scent on Adele.
It’s her.
It’s the person who won’t hurt her.
A huge sourness and pity instantly drowned Adele. She subconsciously reached out her other hand, wanting to, as usual, gently stroke Lina.
However, this action of raising her hand and approaching made Lina instantly stressed.
Her pupils suddenly constricted. The hallucination came rushing back. It was as if the next second, a fierce slap would fall. She tensed her body and let out a pathetic whimper.
Adele’s hand froze in mid-air. Her heart was wrapped in a fine, dense pain. She slowly withdrew her hand and made her voice even softer. “Don’t be afraid, baby. I won’t hit you. Never. If you don’t like it, I won’t touch you. It’s fine.”
Lina closed her eyes tightly. Her long, curled eyelashes were trembling violently from fear. She waited for a few seconds, but only received a gentle comfort.
No slap.
No punches and kicks.
Never again.
Lina timidly opened her eyes. What entered her eyes was Adele’s pair of eyes, filled with pity and love.
Under this gentle gaze, she relaxed, bit by bit. In the end, she did not retreat under the bed but slowly moved closer to Adele.
She gently rested her forehead on the side of Adele’s leg and did not move.
Adele felt her closeness. A gentle and firm curve appeared on her lips.
In her heart, to herself, and also to Lina, who was snuggled by her leg, she said solemnly—
Baby, don’t be afraid.
I will definitely cure you.
No matter how long, no matter how hard.
I love you.
*
There were no guards outside the bedchamber. The flickering candlelight was bright and dim, and it stayed lit until the latter half of the night.
The inner hall was a mess. The silk bedsheets were wrinkled beyond recognition. The black royal gown with gold trim and the snow-white palace gown of the director of the Inner Court were scattered on the floor. The velvet sofa was covered with leather goods. A pair of metal handcuffs had fallen in front of the French windows.
The air was filled with the sweet and cloying smell of afterglow. In the warm, hazy light, Huaguang was leaning against the soft pillows. Her sweaty long hair fell in front of her, covering the teeth marks the bad dog had left. The cold sternness in her eyes had all turned into satisfaction.
Yuan You was lying on her lower abdomen. Her back was covered with fresh red scratches. She pulled at the leather collar around her neck and whimpered, “It’s tight…”
Huaguang’s breath was uneven. In the afterglow, she gave a very wicked smile.
“Bad thing. You’ll never take it off in this life.”
Yuan You nuzzled the soft flesh on Huaguang’s lower abdomen. “I was wrong.”
“How should I punish you?”
“You can hit me or scold me.” Yuan You boldly took her hand.
Huaguang stepped on her ankle. “For you, which one is not a reward?”
Yuan You gave a “hehe” smile and admitted it.
Huaguang’s hands were trembling. She really didn’t have the strength to deal with her anymore, so she had to let her go for now.
Yuan You asked in a hoarse voice, “Then is Your Majesty going back? Or staying here?”
Huaguang grabbed her ear and asked, “What did you call me?”
Yuan You was stunned by this sudden “reward.” She reacted for a long time before she said hesitantly, “…Your Majesty?”
Your Majesty?!
Huaguang was amused by her. She lightly slapped her already “scarred” bottom. “Think again.”
Yuan You cried out in pain, her buttocks tensing slightly. She was sobered up by this slap.
Her entire being was instantly cooked. Every inch of her skin turned pink. She said in a low voice, “Master.”
Only then did Huaguang’s lips curve up in satisfaction. Her fingertips played with her sweaty hair. “I do want to go back and take a look. But how to go back…”
Before she could finish—
Plop!
A book appeared out of thin air and fell directly onto the bed.
The two of them were both stunned.
Huaguang picked up the book. Yuan You moved closer. The title on the cover made both of them fall silent—
“Did the Pure and Innocent Shadow Guard Get Domineeringly Doted on by Your Majesty Today?”
Huaguang: “A demonic book.”
Yuan You: “Agreed.”
