Chapter 74: Only One Bed
After the docks were renovated and expanded, a brand new seaside park was also completed. Four years passed in a flash. The streets that were once full of gang shootouts had all been turned into neat little buildings. Dozens of shops faced the sea, arranged in a circle, becoming the second lively market.
The air was filled with all sorts of aromas: the toasty smell of baked bread, the fresh sweetness of fruit, the salty smell of seafood…
The most dominant of them all was the smell of meat.
The source of the smell was a sausage shop.
Outside the shop was a huge roasting oven. The hearth was filled with burning fruitwood. Above it hung fragrant sausages, sizzling with oil.
On the lintel of the shop hung a sign—
Red Fox’s Choice, Smile Sausage Head Office
The shop was neatly arranged. The shelves on all sides displayed sausages classified by type, origin, and flavor. At the entrance were guidance cards handmade by the owner.
Customers could quickly understand the characteristics of each type of sausage according to the prompts on the cards, avoid pitfalls, and make precise purchases.
“Boss!”
A young girl, carrying a cardboard box, walked into the shop from the warehouse. She frowned and said, “There seems to be a mouse in the shop!”
Behind the cash register, a pair of red-and-white fluffy ears trembled at the sound.
Herlkin raised her head, quickly put her hands behind her back, smacked her lips, and tried to make her voice sound normal and serious. “Is that so?”
The young girl walked closer with the box. “I just counted yesterday. There were clearly 15. Now there are only 14! This is already the third time this month I’ve found a missing sausage!”
Herlkin’s eyes darted away for a moment, then she nodded forcefully. “This is indeed a very serious problem! It concerns the food safety of our shop! Don’t worry, I will personally launch an investigation!”
She spoke with righteous indignation. If one ignored the little bit of oil at the corner of her lips, it would have been more convincing.
The young girl’s eyes narrowed. “Oh—it seems it’s not a mouse!”
It’s a glutton!
Herlkin gave a “hehe” smile. Just as she was about to say something, the copper bell hanging on the shop door made a crisp “ding-dong” sound.
Someone had pushed the door open.
Herlkin wiped her mouth and raised a warm smile. “Welcome to Smile Sausage! Our shop insists on roasting and selling on the spot, and also…”
Halfway through her sentence, she met the eyes of the person who had come in.
It was Haia.
She was wearing a simple white shirt, the collar open, and she exuded a faint smell of disinfectant, clearly having just come from the clinic.
She placed the small paper bag in her hand on the cash register and looked at Herlkin with a calm gaze. “Made especially for you.”
But Herlkin didn’t dare to look her in the eye. Her gaze subconsciously dodged, and then she glanced at Haia’s neck.
That half-open shirt collar couldn’t hide any secrets.
The marks were already very faint, but the memory was still clear.
In the dim light, on the narrow single bed, the out-of-control heartbeat, the intertwined hair, the sweaty skin… the chaotic gasps.
Every detail, Herlkin remembered it all clearly.
Including this shirt on Haia, she also remembered how she had taken it off.
Herlkin’s throat was dry. “What is it?”
Haia also did not mention what had happened that night. She said, “Digestive tablets.”
Herlkin’s heart warmed.
Now was the time to taste new products. She was also greedy, so it was inevitable that she would have indigestion.
She hadn’t expected Haia to be so thoughtful and to have specially made digestive tablets for her.
Herlkin said vaguely, “…Oh, then thanks.”
A subtle atmosphere is most afraid of silence.
Haia made small talk. “Your little shop, it’s been open for three years, right?”
“It will be a full four years next month.” Herlkin blurted out, “I see you’re running back and forth. You’re going to get your memory all mixed up.”
Jealousy was hidden under the joke.
The one who spoke was choked, and the one who heard was even more startled. Haia’s hand, which was resting on the cash register, unconsciously tapped on the counter. After a moment of deliberation, she explained, “I… I often go over because I’m worried about her body. The teacher and I… we didn’t…”
Didn’t do it.
“It’s fine.” Herlkin cut her off directly. She took a deep breath and tried to make her expression look relaxed and carefree. “You don’t have to explain so much, really.”
She paused. “I only care about what I have now. I don’t hope for forever, and I certainly don’t want to force you.”
I don’t want to force you to choose one of two, so I compromise. I know this is a twisted relationship, but I still can’t let go.
Herlkin squeezed out a smile, but a faint pain was hidden in her eyes. “What’s more, she is also my teacher, my family. I know… it’s impossible to completely cut it off. It’s better to just live like this.”
These words were more like she was saying them to herself.
She was soothing the possessiveness in her heart, telling herself not to be too greedy.
Haia turned to the window and gave a light “mhm.”
She didn’t know how to compensate Herlkin. Maybe… next time, she would be more obedient, let this person take enough…
Outside the window, people were coming and going in the market. She caught sight of two figures, arm in arm. A pair of golden rabbit ears was particularly eye-catching in the sunlight. She was affectionately pressed against the woman beside her, seeming to be saying something. The two of them smiled and disappeared into the crowd…
“That…”
“That…”
Haia turned her head. The two of them spoke at the same time.
“You first,” Herlkin said.
“I…” Haia paused. “Can I go home with you tonight?”
She should compensate Herlkin a little.
Herlkin pretended to be reserved, but the tail behind her was wagging nonstop. “Of course.”
She said again, “Stay for dinner tonight? I’ve recently invented a new flavor. Can you help me try it?”
Haia nodded. “Okay.”
The shop was bustling with people, but the momentary quiet inside belonged only to the two of them. The subtle atmosphere gradually eased.
Haia spent almost all her time after the clinic with Herlkin.
The two of them “messed around” for several days.
Haia really couldn’t be at ease with Aomo and still returned to the ancient castle.
She had long since cleaned the main hall, but with only one person living in the vast castle, it was inevitable that it lacked “life.” The surroundings were cold and deserted.
The moment Haia reached the bottom of the spiral staircase, she heard a woman’s repressed and painful groan.
It’s Aomo!
Haia’s heart tightened. Without any hesitation, she immediately rushed up the stairs and into the thick shadow.
The next second, a pale hand reached out from the darkness, grabbed her by the collar, and slammed her against the wall.
The savage force almost crushed her bones.
Haia hit the hard stone wall and let out a muffled grunt in pain.
“Teacher…”
She didn’t care about herself. Her concerned voice was trembling.
“Why didn’t you listen to me!”
Aomo’s eyes were blood-red, as if a fire that could burn everything was burning in them. But her hands were as cold as ice.
“Didn’t I tell you not to come back this month?!”
Her voice was extremely hoarse, no longer the usual calm and indifferent. Every word seemed to be squeezed from between her teeth.
Haia was not afraid of her crazy appearance and said urgently, “I’m worried about you! I’m just afraid something will happen to you!”
“You!”
Fresh blood was so close. Aomo tried her best to control herself. In the extreme pain and torment, she said, “I’m staying here. Even if I don’t drink blood, I won’t die! Why did you have to come back!”
“I don’t want to see you in pain!” Haia said impulsively, “You’ll feel a little better if you drink, won’t you? I’m willing!”
This kind of push and pull had happened countless times in the past four years.
Haia tilted her neck up, as if in sacrifice, exposing her fragile blood vessels to Aomo’s lips and teeth.
The traces of their “messing around” were also exposed at the same time.
Aomo saw it clearly. Her pupils constricted. The desire that had been churning in her heart suddenly froze, and a sharp pain immediately spread.
She let go of the hand that was pressing on Haia and took half a step back.
Haia covered her own neck. Her lips trembled. “Teacher, I… we… actually, I…”
What could she say?
She couldn’t give a decent explanation.
Aomo stared at the few red marks, her face so pale it was almost transparent. She was clear-headed.
Completely clear-headed.
“Don’t follow me…” A broken syllable squeezed out from her throat. She stumbled into the bedroom and then slammed the door!
A loud “bang” echoed in the empty castle.
Haia was stunned for a moment, then still chased after her, pounding on the door. “Teacher! This… this is a different matter! Drink my blood first! You’ll feel a little better! Don’t torture yourself!”
Aomo leaned against the door and slid to the floor.
“Don’t mind me anymore… no matter what the book says, we’re not in that kind of relationship anymore… you chose her, that’s fine. We shouldn’t… we shouldn’t cross that line.”
Haia didn’t know what to say. It had been four whole years. Aomo had never been willing to accept her affection. She had always insisted on treating her as a student, and she was also unwilling to accept her blood with composure, even if this offering was not entirely out of love.
They were still teacher and student, and also the closest people!
But Aomo had always wanted to draw a line.
“But I really like you…” Haia’s forehead was pressed against the cold door. She knelt down, not knowing who she was confessing to. “Don’t be like this, okay?”
“I don’t want to drink your blood anymore.” Aomo’s voice was tired. “I’m not driving you away, and I also know you won’t listen. Between you and me, this is enough.”
She paused.
“This is good for everyone.”
Haia did not say yes, nor did she say no. She pressed her body against the door, as if this could get her a little closer to the person behind the door, could share her pain.
“I’m not leaving…”
“I won’t leave.”
If four years is not enough, then forty years.
She had to break the awkwardness between them with her own hands.
“I’ll just stick here, stay with you, until you get better.”
Aomo did not answer again.
She didn’t know how to convince herself.
And she certainly didn’t know how to convince Haia.
So she leaned tightly against the door, using this method to feel Haia.
Perhaps this was the only indulgence she could allow herself.
After who knows how long, perhaps an hour, perhaps a few hours.
Aomo fell asleep.
Only after confirming that there was no more sound inside did Haia quietly leave.
Before long, Aomo woke up. The crazy desire had temporarily receded, but her eyes were still blood-red.
She would have another episode.
As long as she didn’t hurt Haia, she didn’t care.
After confirming that there was no one outside, Aomo finally opened the door.
The corridor was empty, but on the carpet were several glass jars.
They were filled with fresh blood.
Aomo’s forehead throbbed. The desire that had just been suppressed was aroused again.
Under the glass jars was also a piece of paper, with only two words:
Sorry.
The handwriting was messy, just like Haia’s emotions.
This was her compensation to Aomo.
Just as she had compensated Herlkin.
Aomo looked at the few jars of blood. She knew she could not resist Haia’s temptation.
Perhaps she would never be able to in this life.
She let out a long sigh.
She no longer thought of ethics and morals, only planning to give Haia a good supplement.
*
Adele was worried about Lina’s body and would always ask Haia to come back for a follow-up from time to time.
“How have you been recently?” Haia took Lina’s pulse. “It should be pretty good, right?”
Lina’s complexion was rosy. “I’m very good.”
Her happiness was almost overflowing. Haia could naturally see that she was telling the truth.
“That’s good. In four years, this manor has been completely renewed. If I remember correctly, four years ago, you were still pretending to have hysteria, just to tie her down.” Haia teased, “She still doesn’t know the truth. Be careful I don’t continue to blackmail you.”
Hearing her mention Adele, Lina’s eyes became extremely gentle.
“I had no choice then. I was too afraid of losing her.” Lina admitted frankly, then changed the subject. “I knew long ago that you were using that money to save people. You should have said so earlier. Not to mention 200,000 pounds, even if you added a few more zeros, I would have it.”
“You’re really rich!” Haia did not investigate how Lina knew the truth. With the rabbit’s current status, it was too easy to find out some things. “I really have to congratulate Adele on marrying into a wealthy family!”
Lina smiled. “Money and love are two different things! Anyway, she loves me very much. Without me, she would die.”
“Who wants to know?” Haia couldn’t help but bicker with her. “Come on, I think it’s you who would die without her, right?”
Lina did not refute this. She cast her gaze to the not-so-distant Adele, who was pounding fruit jam, and said in a gentle voice, “Yes, it’s always been.”
Without her, I would really die.
Adele seemed to feel Lina’s gaze and looked up.
The two of them smiled at each other, their ardent gazes colliding into a spark of love.
This warm scene also made Haia’s heart soften.
“Don’t just talk about me. What about you? How have you been recently? You look… a little tired?” Lina said, “Is the clinic very busy?”
Haia subconsciously covered her left wrist. There was a freshly clotted scar there. She had just let out blood not long ago.
“Me? I’m fine.”
The three of them’s relationship, which was hard to cut and even harder to sort out, Haia didn’t know how to talk to Lina about it, and it was not easy for her to talk about it.
The moment she finished speaking, the sound of a carriage stopping abruptly came from the manor gate.
Herlkin poked her head out and shouted, “Lina! I’ve brought you a few boxes of sausages. Have someone come and unload them!”
She turned to Haia again. “Let’s go!”
Haia got up to say goodbye. “We’re going back to the ancient castle tonight. I’ll come and see you another day.”
Lina said nothing. She also stood up, gently hugged Haia, and said sincerely in her ear, “I wish you happiness.”
If love is hard, I wish you happiness.
Haia stiffened at first, then politely returned the hug and said softly, “Thank you.”
Then, she turned and walked toward Herlkin.
It’s fine. Even if love is hard, there must be a result.
Lina watched them leave, turned, and ran to Adele, then hung on her back.
Adele dipped a little strawberry jam and fed it to her. “Is it sweet?”
Lina ate it obediently, but the words she said were very bad. “Not as sweet as you.”
“Bad rabbit.”
“I love you,” Lina said.
“Baby, I love you too.”
/
I wish you happiness.
