Chapter 9: Jumping
“What reward?”
Lina looked at her timidly. “Can you hug me?”
Hugging can reduce a person’s stress response, lower blood pressure, help build trust and a sense of security, and also allow a person to quickly feel relaxed and happy.
Adele hesitated for two seconds, then had a sudden realization. “You did all that just now so I would hug you?”
“Mhm… If it makes Teacher happy, I’m willing.”
Even if it meant recalling the shadows of the past.
“No, no, no…” Adele said, pulling her into an embrace. “A hug is never a reward. If you need one, you can just tell me directly.”
Lina heard her, but it went in one ear and out the other.
She didn’t believe such pure concern existed in this world.
She liked this embrace.
Only this embrace was safe. At least, for now, it was safe.
She was willing to pay a price for it…
Before sleep arrived, her genes gave a warning. In a drowsy state, Lina felt herself being encircled by a wolf.
The herbivore’s genes sounded the alarm once again.
The lop-eared rabbit was afraid of being eaten. She trembled unconsciously, then grew completely still.
So be it…
Be a sacrificial offering? Or be eaten by a wolf?
Either way, it’s death. Better to die in this fleeting moment of tenderness.
A regular breathing sound came from her arms, but Adele had no intention of sleeping.
In the ink-black night, she once again worried about Lina’s future.
She still didn’t know what Princess Huaguang’s temperament was like. If Lina couldn’t win her favor on the Monastery Open Day, then she would have to run away with Lina that very day.
Should they take the country roads and hide in the uninhabited snowy mountains? Or should they sneak onto a cargo ship smuggling canned goods and gamble on leaving the Dezhou continent?
How would they evade capture? They couldn’t stay in inns, so they would have to sleep in the wilderness. She could handle it, but the little rabbit was weak. Could she endure it?
…
Adele couldn’t sleep at all. The thick sense of unease once again surpassed a transmigrator’s concern for a character.
She found it very strange.
It had been less than a week since she met the little rabbit. Why was she so worried about her?
A thousand thoughts were infinitely magnified in the lonely long night. The elusive, intangible worries were like cotton stuck in Adele’s throat, astringent and tight, impossible to swallow or spit out.
She didn’t know what to do next. Instinctively, she tightened her hold on the rabbit ball who was already fast asleep in her arms.
Their heartbeats gradually synchronized in the pitch-black, endless night.
She only had her.
And she only had her.
Lop-eared rabbits smell delicious.
Carnivores can sense this fragrance. The preference engraved in their genes is, in fact, very difficult to change.
A white wolf could never refuse a lop-eared rabbit.
Appetite can be endured, but a person’s willpower, in the end, has its limits.
Adele never once overstepped with Lina. She just carefully clenched her own canine teeth.
Must not eat the rabbit.
…
Lina did not sleep well for the latter half of the night. In a half-dreaming, half-awake state, she felt like she had been nibbled on.
With Teacher by her side, she had slept for a very long time, and for the first time, she hadn’t woken up from a nightmare.
When she opened her eyes, the sky outside was already bright. No one came to urge her to do her morning lessons, and no one stood by her bed with a scripture and a cold, gloomy face.
It seemed that everything really was getting better…
Lina threw back the covers and carefully inspected her pajamas. She had deliberately made a mark on the collar.
There was no change.
No one had messed with her while she was asleep.
Teacher wasn’t like what they discussed in the comments…
Lina breathed a sigh of relief and couldn’t help but curve her lips into a smile.
She looked around the room but didn’t see Adele. She thought about going out to look for her, but just as she stuck her head halfway out the door, she heard a bloodcurdling conversation.
“The rabbit? I’m done hitting her.”
The person who said this was none other than Adele.
Lina would never mistake her silhouette.
“Then what are you planning to do?”
“Anyway, she trusts me so much. I’ll just add some drugs that disrupt hormone levels to her food, get her to have a false pregnancy, and then frame her for fooling around. When her dad finds out, he’ll probably torture her to death…”
Every single word was like a bolt from the blue.
Lina’s vision went black. She stumbled backward in a daze, the floor beneath her feet feeling as soft as cotton. She only took half a step back before falling heavily.
How disgusting.
She wanted to vomit but couldn’t. Her whole body was trembling. The wall around her heart, which had just been rebuilt, collapsed with a roar. The undiluted fear coiled around her once more, dragging her down into the abyss.
Lina felt as if she had fallen into ice water, cold to the bone, in pain, and suffocating. She lost control and slapped her own ears, trying to drive away the ringing sound.
It was all fake.
All the gentle words, all the meticulous care, it was all fake.

“Eh? Lady Adele, when did you come to the kitchen?” A maid, holding a basin of fresh strawberries, looked puzzled.
Adele’s chopping motion paused. “I came over before dawn. What’s wrong?”
The maid put down the strawberries. “I just saw you outside the classroom. I was even thinking, you walk so fast, you got to the kitchen in the blink of an eye.”
The person squatting by the stove to help out looked up and said, “Did you eat too many mushrooms this morning? The lady has been watching this soup the whole time and hasn’t left.”
“Ah!?” The maid was full of question marks. “I didn’t eat any mushrooms this morning… I really saw the lady outside… Could it be that my eyes were playing tricks on me?”
What the hell.
***
Lina cried until she was out of breath. Her already weak body gradually gave out and began to lose strength.
She collapsed onto the carpet in a daze, her tear-soaked ears drooping lifelessly on her thin back.
Why does everyone have to bully me?
A person in extreme pain only wants release. Lina looked out the window with blurry, tear-filled eyes, and once again felt the urge to jump.
If I die, it won’t hurt anymore.
If I die, all of this will end.
…
The Dezhou continent had a clear class division, emphasizing the separation of master and servant. The kitchen was the domain of the servants, and masters usually did not set foot in it.
But Adele couldn’t be bothered with all that. She didn’t trust anyone else with Lina’s food.
Adele spent several hours busy in the kitchen and finally cooked a famous stomach-nourishing dish from her hometown—minnow and vegetable chowder.
Minnows have high requirements for water quality, and their meat is fresh, sweet, and tender. The only drawback is that they have many bones.
Worried that Lina might choke, Adele personally picked the bones out of a dozen small fish, one by one. She also watched the heat closely, not leaving for a moment, ensuring that every vegetable was cooked until it was soft enough.
As long as she could nurse Lina back to health, she was willing to do anything.
Adele carried the casserole, pushed open the door with a smile, and before she could speak, the smile on her lips froze.
“Lina!”
Seeing the little rabbit trembling at her feet, she was instantly so scared her heart raced.
“What’s wrong with you!”
Adele put down the chowder and hurriedly helped Lina up from the floor. “What happened?”
The little rabbit’s eyes were vacant, her face ashen. Her eyeballs moved slowly, and the blood trickling from the corner of her mouth was a glaring scarlet.
“Lina!” Adele raised her voice. “Don’t scare me…”
Lina looked at her, paused for a moment, and then, as if receiving a great shock, struggled to back away.
“Don’t touch me… Don’t touch me!”
Looking at her terrified and fragile appearance, Adele’s heart felt as if it had been brutally ripped open by a sharp blade. She froze where she was, helpless, not daring to get closer.
Lina’s movements suddenly stopped. A moment later, she took the initiative to crawl back to Adele’s side, prostrating herself on the floor and saying in a trembling voice, “I’ll be obedient… Please let me go…”
“Get up first.” Adele tentatively reached out to her. “I was only gone for a few hours, how did you…”
How did you become like this?
“I won’t get up… I don’t dare to be willful anymore…” Lina’s peripheral vision caught sight of the bowl of chowder, and she recalled the words she had heard.
That must be where the hormones that cause false pregnancy are mixed in…
Instead of being forced to drink it, it’s better to drink it myself…
Lina crawled to the dining table in a few steps, grabbed the spoon, scooped up a full ladleful, and poured it directly into her mouth.
The soup in the casserole had been simmering for a full four hours and was currently steaming. One mouthful of that, and her esophagus would definitely be completely scalded.
“Don’t!”
Adele rushed over and, just as Lina was about to drink, turned sideways and snatched the spoon away.
“Hiss—”
In the struggle, the scalding hot chowder spilled all over Adele’s leg. She couldn’t hold back the pain and let out a muffled grunt.
Lina froze in place, her chaotic thoughts all converging into three words—
I’m dead.
She looked at the veins bulging on Adele’s arm from the pain and could already imagine the fiery sting of a slap on her face.
She had hurt the instructor.
She wasn’t being good.
A disobedient offering was to be burned to death.
No…
She didn’t want to be treated like this…
Lina covered her face and let out a hoarse scream, then ran straight for the windowsill.
“Lina!”
🙁 ouch
