Chapter 2
Song Yugui opened her mouth, but no words came out. A faint sense of injustice brewed within her. Why should she have to pay for the original owner’s sins?
But if she didn’t, she would most likely die.
She never imagined her own cunning could match that of the main villain; that was impossible. If the other woman wanted to kill her, she would probably just have to lie there and wait for death.
Song Yugui: Do I really have to live this hellish life? /heart-like-dead-ashes.jpg.
While she remained silent, Shen Xizhi didn’t dare to speak either. Nor did she dare to sneak another glance at her. She kept her eyes lowered, the very picture of quiet obedience.
Song Yugui wrestled with her anguish for a long time before she could grudgingly accept that she had been pulled into a book. She couldn’t help but cover her eyes with her hand. She had to keep living. Seeking death was not an option either—what if dying here meant she was truly dead, with no way back?
This was awful.
Her moment of sorrow passed. She lowered her hand and looked up again. She saw the woman, whose bruises were plain to see, still standing there, her head bowed, revealing a long, swan-like neck of snowy white. Her features were beautiful, but her demeanor was timid and shrinking, as if she feared Song Yugui might erupt in violence at any moment.
And why wouldn’t she? Given the original owner’s volatile temper, it was a real possibility.
A flicker of pity crossed Song Yugui’s face. Still feeling stiff and awkward, she feigned that asking for the name earlier had been nothing more than a whim. Trying to sound less fierce and intimidating, she said, “Xizhi, did you say dinner was ready?”
She remembered that part, at least. She desperately needed to change the subject before Shen Xizhi grew suspicious.
The villain in the book was undoubtedly brilliant; otherwise, she couldn’t have kept up her act for so long.
Song Yugui was afraid Shen Xizhi would notice something was off. What if she took her for a demon and had her burned at the stake? QAQ.
Worst comes to worst, she thought, I’ll just have to treat the villain a little better, and then we can get a divorce. Then she can go and pursue the person she actually likes.
Hearing her question, Shen Xizhi didn’t dwell on why she wasn’t being beaten. Not daring to delay for a second, she immediately replied, “Yes, I made vegetable congee for dinner. Wife, please come have some…”
The form of address still made Song Yugui’s skin crawl. What sort of lesbian couple called each other that? But she had already acted so out of character today. If she tried to change the way she was addressed as well… it would be too conspicuous.
I’ll have Shen Xizhi change it in a few days, Song Yugui decided.
“Alright, I’ll have a bite.”
She suddenly remembered that the original owner had always been cruel to the villain. Her own expression had already betrayed too much today; she had to do damage control. She couldn’t become gentle all at once—it had to be gradual. So, she deliberately put on a cold, stern expression and walked over.
Shen Xizhi had just been thinking how strange she was today, but seeing her like this, she relaxed. It was still the same old Song Yugui.
She stepped aside to clear the narrow path. On the surface, Song Yugui appeared aloof, but she was actually moving with great care, trying not to brush against the woman’s bruised and battered hands. When she reached the courtyard, she was greeted by the sight of a dilapidated square table flanked by two equally ancient-looking chairs.
Song Yugui’s heart clenched. After working so hard to build a good life for herself, she was back to square one.
Her fists tightened. I’m never reading another slice-of-life farming novel again!
Shen Xizhi followed two steps behind, not daring to get too close. Only after Song Yugui was seated did she slowly approach and use a ladle to spoon out two bowls of green, watery congee.
Song Yugui was still struggling with the wobbly chair, whose legs were of different lengths. She couldn’t believe it. How was anyone supposed to eat a peaceful meal in a chair like this? One wrong move and she’d go sprawling, the meal splashing all over her face.
The bowl of green soup was placed before her. As she looked up, she caught a fleeting glimpse of a set of beautiful, reddish fingertips before a cool voice said, “Wife, you’re in the wrong seat.”
“Huh?”
Song Yugui looked up, completely bewildered. There were only two chairs. Did they have a seating hierarchy?
“This is my seat. It’s not very stable. I was afraid it would spoil Wife’s appetite.”
Perhaps because Song Yugui hadn’t shown any sign of hitting her, Shen Xizhi relaxed slightly and finally dared to speak properly, though her voice carried a strange chill that sent a shiver down Song Yugui’s spine.
She looked down at the other chair. Sure enough, all four of its legs were intact, unlike the one she was on, which was missing a corner.
Beast! An absolute beast! she railed inwardly. You’re the one who wanted to marry a woman, you brought this perfectly fine girl into your home, how could you treat her like this!
It wasn’t that Song Yugui felt sorry for the villain, really. It was more about her own indignation at having to clean up this mess.
She couldn’t give up the chair now, though. She could only look up and force a stiff smile. “It’s fine. This one is too wobbly, so I’ll sit here. You take that one.”
For the first time, Shen Xizhi looked surprised. Her already large, round eyes grew even wider, but her brow furrowed and she hesitated to sit. “Wife…”
“Enough. I don’t feel like sitting there today.”
Seeing the look on Shen Xizhi’s face, she quickly adopted a colder tone.
Having not known a single good day since she was married, Shen Xizhi was terrified of her. At her displeasure, she naturally didn’t dare say another word. She sat down silently beside her and began to sip at the green liquid in her bowl in small mouthfuls.
Only then did Song Yugui have a moment to properly inspect the day’s meal. She had expected it to be bad, but the bowl of entirely green soup still left her speechless.
She couldn’t help but ask, “Didn’t you say it was vegetable congee?”
Where’s the rice? Why can’t I see any?
Shen Xizhi’s body stiffened. She quietly shifted to the side, perching on the very edge of her chair, her slender back tense and straight. “The… the rice is all gone,” she whispered. “I dug up these wild vegetables on the mountain yesterday. I picked a lot, so I added more. I’ll go to town tomorrow and buy some rice.”
Judging by everything she had seen, Song Yugui made the reasonable assumption that this household was broke.
She didn’t say anything more to spoil the meal. After listening, she was silent for a moment before simply saying, “Let’s eat.” She lifted her bowl, lowered her head, and took a mouthful of the wild vegetable soup. A bitter taste filled her mouth. It was rather foul.
Song Yugui forced herself to swallow.
This body probably hadn’t had lunch and was now famished. If she didn’t drink the soup, she would likely go hungry all night. Oh well, she thought. One must endure bitterness to become a master of men. QAQ.
Holding her breath and struggling to keep her balance, Song Yugui drank the entire bowl of soup. Only at the very bottom did she find a few grains of rice, which only deepened her silence.
In contrast, Shen Xizhi’s bowl barely had any vegetables.
Silence was the Cambridge of the night.
She reached out to stop the young woman, who was getting up to clear the bowls, but the movement terrified her. Shen Xizhi stumbled back several steps, and the bowl in her hand fell to the ground, shattering with a crisp crack. Song Yugui hadn’t realized she had such a powerful effect on her. She stood there, scratching the back of her head in embarrassment.
Shen Xizhi clutched her chest, panting, her expression a mix of fear and confusion. When her gaze fell on the porcelain shards on the ground, her long lashes trembled, and her expression finally settled into one of utter despair.
She bit her red lip unconsciously, her eyes misting over. Is she going to start? she thought. And here I thought… I might make it through today unscathed.
It had been a foolish hope after all. With Song Yugui’s violent nature, how could she ever be allowed a single day of peace?
the original song yugui must’ve been truly terrible to her 🙁
