Chapter 21:
That night, it snowed in Ningcheng.
The car window was covered in a layer of blurry white mist.
“The snow came a little early this year.”
Tan Xiaofang slowed the car down to forty kilometers per hour, sniffed her red, frozen nose, and didn’t dare to be careless, concentrating on the road conditions.
During the weekend evening rush hour, the roads were a long line of cars.
Qi Sijia looked up, her fingertips touching the glass. Through the narrow gap in the window, she could see the snowflakes falling on the box-shaped car in the brightly lit night, swaying and flying.
She hummed in agreement and glanced at the carefully dressed Tan Xiaofang in the driver’s seat.
“Aren’t you cold wearing so little?” Qi Sijia asked.
“Of course,” Tan Xiaofang had specifically gotten her hair done today. She smiled with satisfaction. “Don’t you think I look particularly radiant today?”
Before Qi Sijia could reply, Tan Xiaofang sneezed and said sheepishly, “I have to do this. I’ve heard that all the handsome guys and beautiful girls in the drama club group chat tonight have put a lot of effort into their appearance…”
“Is it that serious?” Qi Sijia asked with a yawn.
“Of course,” Tan Xiaofang said. “The class reunion is secondary. The main thing is to build connections with people who have business dealings. Otherwise, do you think a host of Li Ang’s status would take the time to organize a class reunion after so many years?”
“Aren’t you excited at all? Meng Jiang is coming. Leaving aside her status as a famous actress,” Tan Xiaofang turned the steering wheel, overtook the van in front, and then said, “the investors in Beicheng’s circle have to be respectful in front of Meng Jiang. Although the media has never reported on Meng Jiang’s birth, she must have done well these years. Last year’s Spring Festival Gala, Meng Jiang let it slip that her home is a ten-minute walk from the Forbidden City… Jiajia, do you know what that means?”
“I know,” Qi Sijia said without thinking.
Tan Xiaofang raised an eyebrow, thinking to herself, You know nothing.
Through the rearview mirror, she indeed saw Qi Sijia playing with her phone.
Tan Xiaofang said with envy, “That’s a mansion that you and I will never be able to live in. A house next to the capital, with a price but no market.”
“Oh.”
There was no hint of curiosity on Qi Sijia’s face. She wasn’t being perfunctory, because she had heard Wei Yunfang mention that the people living in the houses next to the capital were either rich or noble. Unless the house was dilapidated, almost no one would sell it.
But a few years ago, Wei Yunfang had handled a foreclosure property. She had pulled some strings and transferred it to Qi Sijia.
Although she didn’t think she would ever live there.
Qi Sijia still thought about the housing prices in Beicheng. She was just about to tell Tan Xiaofang the specific price per square meter, but Tan Xiaofang took Qi Sijia’s calm reaction as perfunctory.
“I said, are you even listening to me?”
“Yes,” Qi Sijia lifted her eyelids.
The two of them exchanged a glance. Tan Xiaofang looked at her as if she were a lost cause.
“Alright, alright. We’ve played games with Goddess Meng for a few days. She’s so popular, so I don’t need to tell you about her status. But you need to pay attention to these next few people. For example…”
Qi Sijia repeated absent-mindedly, “For example, what…”
“For example, Fu Chuchu. I don’t know if you remember her, but she’s a popular singer and dancer now.”
“I remember she didn’t seem to like you very much back then.”
Qi Sijia didn’t have much memory of Fu Chuchu. She was socially anxious and not good at socializing in college. Except for some grudges with Meng Jiang, she didn’t really have any with anyone else. In fact, she would have to see Fu Chuchu in person to recognize her.
“I don’t remember.”
Tan Xiaofang: “…”
“Alright,” Tan Xiaofang thought to herself, Why am I arguing with a socially anxious person?
“Back then, you were withdrawn and aloof, wearing a mask all day. You looked down on everyone, so it’s inevitable that you were hated. But you and her have no contact now, so there’s no need to worry.”
At this point, Tan Xiaofang glanced at Qi Sijia through the rearview mirror. “Jiajia, when we get to the private club, are you still going to wear a mask…”
After all, it was a class reunion. So many big shots weren’t wearing masks. If Qi Sijia wore one, it would be hard to justify.
The traffic ahead was clear. Qi Sijia put away her phone.
Her fingers gripped the seat. Thinking about the noisy reunion, she frowned slightly and said, “No.”
“Can you handle it?”
I have to, even if I can’t.
In fact, just patiently mentioning the words “reunion” with Tan Xiaofang was already making Qi Sijia a little anxious.
Her heart was pounding.
She sincerely hoped that this road would be congested for a while longer so that she could arrive at the destination later.
But things didn’t go as planned. Tan Xiaofang’s small electric car, worth about 200,000 yuan, had already arrived at the destination.
With a “we’re here,” Qi Sijia composed herself and said “oh” nonchalantly.
Tan Xiaofang got out of the driver’s seat and went to the back seat, waiting for Qi Sijia to get out. The two of them walked side by side, like a protective mother, which was very thoughtful.
“Stay close to me later.”
She was about to link arms with Qi Sijia, but Qi Sijia avoided her.
Tan Xiaofang: “…”
“I like the same sex.”
Tan Xiaofang: “I know, so what? I won’t like you, and neither will you.”
“Look, there are best friends holding hands everywhere on the street. Is it such a big deal to hold hands?”
The private club was located far from the bustling city center. There were valets to help with parking.
Tan Xiaofang tossed her car keys to the valet and looked up to see a line of luxury cars behind her. She couldn’t help but feel glad that she hadn’t agreed to drive Qi Sijia’s little yellow duck.
At least her car could be considered a mid-range car.
Seeing that Tan Xiaofang was silent, Qi Sijia thought she was still upset about the hand-holding. So she thought for a moment and explained seriously, “It’s fine for heterosexuals to hold hands. But for me, there have to be boundaries between best friends.”
Tan Xiaofang was almost speechless at her rigid attitude. She thought to herself, You’re a female player who changes girlfriends constantly.
I don’t know how you’ve dated so many girlfriends and still haven’t learned anything.
With this attitude of not holding hands, not fawning, and not taking the initiative, you’ll never have a wife in your life.
The reunion was on the top floor of the club.
The waiters were wearing uniform suits. From the moment Qi Sijia and the other person entered the hall, there was a waiter leading the way with a low bow, his service attitude excellent.
It was cold and frosty outside, with the temperature close to zero. Although the hall was warm, Tan Xiaofang’s hands were still trembling from the cold.
She was wearing very little. She rubbed her hands, checked her makeup in the reflection of the elevator’s glass wall, and asked Qi Sijia nervously, “I didn’t know it was this kind of place when I came. Is my outfit too casual? Maybe I should go back and change into something more formal. My work clothes don’t match the magnificent decoration here.”
Qi Sijia glanced at her. “It’s fine.”
Seeing that Tan Xiaofang was still nervous, Qi Sijia slowed down her tone and said, “Otherwise, you can look at me. It’s suitable.”
After Qi Sijia said this, Tan Xiaofang finally had time to look.
A moment later, she glared back at her. “Nonsense!”
Compared to Tan Xiaofang’s crop top and hip-hugging skirt, Qi Sijia had taken warmth to the extreme. Her face was buried in the large fur collar of her down jacket.
A white woolen sweater as a base, skinny jeans, and short boots.
A blue and white scarf was wrapped around her long neck three times, and with the fluffy fox fur collar of her down jacket, her face looked much softer.
Qi Sijia was a cold and beautiful type, but her face could not be replicated by internet celebrities, because her face was naturally short, with a straight nose. Although every inch of her features had a masculine and feminine handsomeness, her face was a standard oval shape, with soft facial lines. Paired with a fleshy nose, the softness neutralized some of the sharpness of her features.
Especially when she wore a white sweater and skinny jeans, her long legs were slender and straight. With a casual jacket draped over her, and a pair of eyes looking over through gold-rimmed glasses, a cool and ascetic aura emanated from her.
Tan Xiaofang glanced at her and rolled her eyes. “You’d look good even in a rag.”
Qi Sijia took Tan Xiaofang’s words as a compliment. She hadn’t even put on lipstick when she went out.
She just wanted to go to the class reunion with a plain face and find a corner to get through it.
After arriving at the top floor, the waiter bowed and opened the door to the private room.
The temperature inside the private room was much warmer than outside.
The design of the private club was very unique, with a strong theme. The selling point of this club was comfort, so the decoration was mainly casual and comfortable, without losing its luxury.
On the right side of the private room was a bar, with a dedicated bartender serving the guests in the hall.
On the left was a whole row of expensive high-end wine. Further back were rectangular sofas arranged in a circle.
Due to the traffic jam, Qi Sijia and Tan Xiaofang were almost half an hour late.
By now, the class reunion was already in full swing. The lights on the ceiling were romantic, and amidst the clinking of glasses, everyone seemed to have a happy smile on their face.
To be honest, Qi Sijia was not used to such occasions. She paused at the door.
At the same time, the host of the reunion, Li Ang, quickly stood up from the middle of the toasting.
In fact, Li Ang didn’t have to personally greet every classmate who came, but right now, only Meng Jiang and two other classmates had not arrived.
The door to the private room opened, and the lights were too dazzling. At first glance, one of the ladies at the door was fair and tall, with a slender waist. Everyone thought it was Meng Jiang.
Li Ang broke free from the toasting crowd and came up to greet her.
“Meng Jiang, how come you…” As he got closer and took a good look, it wasn’t Meng Jiang.
Li Ang’s tone paused. “Oh, this is…”
Even as a famous host, his brain was a little overwhelmed at this moment.
Although it wasn’t Meng Jiang, such beauty was so stunning that it made his brain speed slow down.
The light scattered on Qi Sijia’s face, her gold-rimmed glasses reflecting the light. A pair of autumn-water eyes were hidden under the lenses, like a long, narrow boat.
There were many people in the private room, and it was warm. The heavy cotton jacket was too hot to wear. She took it off and draped it over her wrist. Her loose shirt was tucked in halfway into her jeans.
It wasn’t until Qi Sijia took off her clothes that, amidst her falling hair, her cold eyes glanced over. Someone in the class finally called out, “Qi Sijia?”
Li Ang’s mouth was agape, unable to hide his amazement. “If Zhang Xiao hadn’t reminded me, I would have almost lost my composure.”
“I almost thought a fairy had descended.”
Li Ang was a famous host. With his interruption, he eased the awkwardness of having mistaken the person just now.
In fact, Qi Sijia and Meng Jiang were completely different types of beauties. If Qi Sijia’s beauty was on the cold and handsome side, Meng Jiang was a complete natural stunner, one that could only be admired from a distance, and the other was a bright and noble beauty.
As Li Ang finished, the private room became lively again.
“Long time no see, old classmate.”
“Teacher Ding just left. You’re late.”
Tan Xiaofang subtly blocked some of the gazes for Qi Sijia and put her hands on her hips. “What’s wrong? Am I not a beauty? Why isn’t anyone greeting me?”
As these words fell, there was a burst of laughter.
“You’re the only one who cares about this.”
“It’s been so many years since the drama club. This is the first time I’ve seen Qi Sijia without a mask. She’s stunning.”
Qi Sijia didn’t say much from beginning to end. She didn’t talk much before either.
She usually wore a black mask and was quiet. She would just hum in agreement when someone greeted her, which made people think she was aloof and hard to get along with.
So now that she was silent, no one found it strange.
After a round of socializing, Tan Xiaofang stood in front.
The two of them found a seat in the corner. Tan Xiaofang greeted the people around them.
She handed over a fruit platter and asked Qi Sijia in a low voice, “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
Before she came in, she had taken a heart pill. But the crowd was noisy, which made Qi Sijia very uncomfortable. Her gaze reflexively looked at the door, but at the same time, the cat boy’s smile appeared in her mind.
Qi Sijia suppressed the urge in her heart, looked at her nose and heart, and with her slender fingers, she picked up a toothpick and put a piece of fruit into her mouth.
The sweet juice eased some of her anxiety.
The cocktail Tan Xiaofang had ordered was ready. She told Qi Sijia and went to the bar to get it herself.
Qi Sijia was alone. She focused on eating the fruit in front of her at a slow pace.
While whiling away this ostentatious class reunion, years later, the status gap between classmates was huge. Any kind of reunion was actually a changed arena of fame and fortune for adults.
The biggest star among this year’s classmates was actually Meng Jiang, but she hadn’t come. The center of the crowd was led by Li Ang and Fu Chuchu.
Li Ang was chatting and laughing with the male classmates.
Fu Chuchu sat on the rectangular sofa not far from Qi Sijia, the center of attention.
“Chuchu, can you help me get an autograph for my nephew?” A male classmate in a suit and tie came up and handed over a basketball.
After he set this precedent, Fu Chuchu signed about ten more. She fiddled with her sore hand.
She frowned. “No more. It’s tiring.”
Right now, there was still a female classmate who wanted an autograph. She sheepishly withdrew her pen and changed the subject. “Chuchu, is your girlfriend coming too?”
Fu Chuchu leaned against the sofa, her gaze drifting towards Qi Sijia. Her voice was charming and a little boastful. “She’s from a prestigious family and can’t get out of her social engagements. She said she’ll come pick me up after she gets out of a meeting.”
“I’m so envious. What does she do?”
“She does a bit of everything,” Fu Chuchu said vaguely, but for a top-tier star like her to talk about her girlfriend’s family with such a sense of superiority was enough to prove that the other person’s identity was extraordinary.
At present, same-sex marriage was not a taboo, but for a girl from a prestigious family to marry a girl was still not allowed. After all, a large family needed to carry on the family line.
There were almost no female stars like Fu Chuchu who liked the same sex and seemed to be able to marry into a wealthy family.
“I’m so envious of you.” A few of her close friends had been surrounding Fu Chuchu. One of them, a girl with blue bobbed hair, was full of envy. “The top-tier lesbians are almost all taken by excellent people like you.”
Fu Chuchu said modestly, “How could that be?”
“Meng Jiang has also come out. She’s currently single. If you want to get out of being single, you have to hurry up.”
“Chuchu, you couldn’t even pursue the goddess. How could we possibly pursue her?”
Fu Chuchu’s eyes slanted, as if she had accidentally seen Qi Sijia. She pointed her finger and, at just the right moment, pointed at Qi Sijia.
“Look, isn’t Qi Sijia still single?”
As she said this, the two girls around her immediately became interested.
A subtle sneer appeared on Fu Chuchu’s lips.
She shifted the topic to Qi Sijia, and the female classmate next to her’s eyes lit up.
She walked up to Qi Sijia. “Long time no see, Qi Sijia. Are you still a screenwriter?”
Back in the drama club, Qi Sijia was the screenwriter that Meng Jiang had recruited for the play Hua Dan.
Now, everyone had gone their separate ways, but the turnover rate of the 17th drama club members was not high.
Most of them were leaders in various industries in the entertainment industry.
Qi Sijia finished her fruit, her long, narrow eyes slowly opening. The light haloed the contours of her eyes. Qi Sijia pushed up her glasses with a surprisingly long, slender finger. Her standard female low voice came out slowly from her lips. “No.”
“Then what do you do?” The female classmate’s cheeks were flushed. As a lesbian who moved in the circle, Qi Sijia’s ascetic and cold and handsome appearance was even more attractive to lesbians than Meng Jiang’s.
She pricked up her ears, wanting to know more.
But the lights dimmed, and Qi Sijia looked up. “Cleaner.”
