Chapter 25:
Meng Jiang’s car was an extended-length nanny van. The model was a bit large, and with the icy ground and poor road conditions, Qi Sijia kept the speed at fifty kilometers per hour, driving smoothly and evenly throughout the journey with almost no bumps.
As the car exited the street at the end of the private club, Qi Sijia remembered that she didn’t know the destination.
So she looked at Meng Jiang through the rearview mirror.
After a moment of hesitation, she asked in a calm tone, “Where do you live?”
For a long time, Meng Jiang did not reply.
Looking through the rearview mirror, Meng Jiang’s legs were bent, and the white shawl she had taken off earlier was draped over her legs.
She rested her chin on one hand, her head leaning against the fogged-up window. The car’s heater was on full blast, and her long, seaweed-like hair hung down completely. Perhaps it was a little hot, as she unconsciously tucked the strands of hair sticking to her face behind her ear.
Qi Sijia’s gaze landed on Meng Jiang’s eyelashes, which were resting on the bridge of her nose. After a moment of thought, she tapped the button next to the driver’s console, and the direction of the air conditioner’s fan blades no longer blew towards Meng Jiang’s face.
After doing this, the green light turned.
Qi Sijia hesitated whether to wake Meng Jiang up. The long line of cars behind her honked, and there was no time to think. She could only follow her instinct and turn according to the most familiar return route.
The car entered Yong’an Road.
In the shadows, Meng Jiang opened her eyes, her chin propped up as she turned to Qi Sijia.
Her stomach was aching faintly, but her gaze was on Qi Sijia, who was driving.
She felt that she could still bear it.
The woman in the driver’s seat was particularly focused on driving. Her long, fair hands were on the black steering wheel, the white and black colors contrasting, the small red mole turning with the steering wheel.
Meng Jiang stared at those hands, feeling a little out of place. Her gaze then moved upwards.
Five years ago, Qi Sijia did not wear glasses. Occasionally, when someone’s gaze was on her, she would raise an eyebrow and return the gaze politely.
It was rare for others to see her side profile.
In fact, Qi Sijia’s side profile was even more handsome than her front face.
The driver’s seat was usually driven by a driver, so the height should not have been adjusted in advance. Qi Sijia’s back was straight, her white shirt tucked into her jeans, revealing a very flat and slender back, a thin waist, and a rounded buttocks.
She was a writer who stayed at home, yet there was not a trace of fat on her waist.
Wrapped in fabric, the only place that looked rounded was firm and full.
After looking, she felt even more out of place. Meng Jiang subconsciously reached for the place where she kept her cigarettes, but when her fingers touched her handbag, she dismissed the thought.
In the flickering light and shadow, Meng Jiang couldn’t help but want to laugh. No matter how many years had passed, in the face of Qi Sijia’s extremely ascetic appearance of meticulously buttoning up her white shirt to the top, she could still hear the restless thumping in her heart.
Her eyes were rooted, fixed on her.
A few minutes later, Qi Sijia caught her pretending to be asleep.
Meng Jiang pretended not to notice and withdrew her gaze, naturally pulling out the car pillow that had been supporting her lower back and hugging it to her stomach.
When she looked up again, the lingering ripples in her eyes had faded.
“Where do you live?” Meng Jiang threw Qi Sijia’s question back at her.
Hearing this, Qi Sijia didn’t say anything. She stopped the car at the zebra crossing and turned back to look at Meng Jiang.
Compared to the most intimate night between the two of them, Qi Sijia’s gaze was the same, her eyes straight and clear like glass beads.
It was as if she wanted to see through every fragile expression on her face. Being sized up by these dark, cold eyes, Meng Jiang felt a little unable to cope.
A moment later, Qi Sijia said faintly, “The old city. Where do you live?”
“Oh.” Through the rearview mirror, Meng Jiang looked at her straight on, and with a foxy, short laugh, she said, “I’m on the way with you.”
Qi Sijia: “…”
An artificial coincidence cannot be glossed over with a high-sounding “on the way.”
Meng Jiang’s actions made it increasingly difficult to guess her thoughts. Just a day ago in the game, she was still distant, maintaining the normal distance an ex-girlfriend should have, as if they would never meet again.
Foreseeing that it would be difficult to cope, Qi Sijia warned her.
“If you keep talking like this…”
Before she could finish, Meng Jiang’s phone vibrated.
The phone next to her was ringing urgently. One call was cut off, and another came in.
Meng Jiang finally swiped to answer. The caller was Chen Cheng.
“Jiang Jiang, where are you now?” Chen Cheng had something urgent to tell Meng Jiang. She spoke very quickly, as if she were afraid that a second’s delay would cause even more trouble.
“In the car.”
“Then listen to me, turn around immediately, don’t go home.”
Meng Jiang glanced at Qi Sijia, then looked at the car behind her through the rearview mirror. There were no paparazzi tailing her.
Her privacy had always been well protected. She even had a dozen backup nanny vans. Logically, she shouldn’t have been targeted by paparazzi.
“I’m being followed?”
“No,” Chen Cheng said. “The private club class reunion you attended tonight, there are paparazzi waiting outside.”
Meng Jiang thought for a moment and almost immediately thought of the person the paparazzi were waiting for: “Fu Chuchu?”
Chen Cheng briefly explained the situation to Meng Jiang.
Fu Chuchu had been followed by the paparazzi Ge Yaru for a month. The reason was that Fu Chuchu had publicly cursed the paparazzi on a foreign website a month ago.
This action angered Ge Yaru’s team.
So she spent a month following Fu Chuchu.
She had a lot of things to expose, but the most explosive was that a few minutes ago, they had taken a frontal photo of Fu Chuchu and her rich second-generation girlfriend entering and leaving a private club together.
So “Top-tier singer and dancer three-character female celebrity’s relationship exposed” quickly became the headline.
Chen Cheng, even on vacation, would habitually check the hot search out of professional habit.
So she saw Ge Yaru’s exposé in time. And in her candid photos of Fu Chuchu, Meng Jiang’s home address appeared.
This meant that Meng Jiang and Fu Chuchu were very likely living together.
According to the sensitivity of the entertainment industry, once Fu Chuchu’s relationship was exposed, her home address would easily be revealed along with the photos. It was conceivable what kind of crowd of reporters and fans would be blocking the outside of that high-end community at Jinbiao Center tonight and tomorrow.
If Meng Jiang drove back now, she would most likely be innocently implicated.
“You can’t go home now.”
“Then where should I go?”
“Find a hotel and stay there for now,” Chen Cheng said. “Is the driver there? Give him the phone.”
Meng Jiang glanced at Qi Sijia and handed Chen Cheng’s phone to her.
Before Qi Sijia could react, the person on the other end of the line began to make arrangements. “Old Li, to prevent paparazzi from following you, as a precaution, you should drive around the overpass twice and then take Meng Jiang to the hotel. Remember to use your ID card to check her in.”
Qi Sijia: “…”
After she finished, before Qi Sijia could answer, Meng Jiang winked at her.
Then she put the phone to her ear and told Chen Cheng to find someone to destroy all the surveillance footage from the bar today.
After a few instructions, the phone was hung up.
Seeing this, although Qi Sijia was not yet clear about the situation, she also knew that the class reunion had attracted paparazzi.
Not wanting to cause trouble for herself, Qi Sijia quickly turned the steering wheel and drove towards the overpass.
“Are we being followed?”
Meng Jiang said, “We’re fine here. Fu Chuchu’s side is being followed.”
After this interruption, the restless tension of their confrontation in the car was gone.
For the rest of the journey, Meng Jiang was extremely quiet.
Qi Sijia did not play music. The car drove around the overpass twice in a stable manner.
After getting off the overpass, the old city was five kilometers to the left, and the new city was to the right.
Qi Sijia asked Meng Jiang where she was going.
Her whole body was listlessly slumped against the window. Accompanied by the howling wind, Meng Jiang barely managed to regain a sliver of rationality from the pain in her stomach.
She followed her heart’s desire and said, “Is it convenient for you to put me up for a night?”
Qi Sijia neither said yes nor no.
After a long time of deliberation, she finally squeezed out from her mouth without mercy, “Don’t be ridiculous.”
Meng Jiang looked up. Through the mottled streetlights, she looked straight at her, not angry at all. Instead, she curled her lips, with a step-by-step alluring momentum. She said, “Why can’t it be that I’ve seriously considered it?”
She counted on her fingers and gave Qi Sijia the reasons for staying at her place.
“You see, I didn’t bring my ID card.”
Qi Sijia frowned. “You can still book a room with your electronic ID card.”
Meng Jiang said, “I’m staying alone. I can’t guarantee that I won’t run into trouble.”
“For example?” Qi Sijia didn’t believe her nonsense.
“For example—a power outage at the hotel.”
“If there’s a power outage, you can just sleep.”
“My phone is out of battery.”
“You don’t need to look at your phone to sleep.”
After a few rounds of this, Qi Sijia’s tone did not soften at all with any lingering feelings.
Meng Jiang lowered her eyes and gave up. “Alright…”
“Juzi Express Hotel, thank you.”
Qi Sijia almost laughed in anger.
Juzi Express Hotel was located in the demolished apartment building area of the old city. Compared to the five-star hotels that Meng Jiang would occasionally condescend to stay at, this was a budget hotel that was at least two grades lower.
In any case, her choice of such a place either indicated ulterior motives or was a deliberate act.
Qi Sijia stopped the car.
Meng Jiang raised an eyebrow. As if she knew what she was thinking, she explained innocently, “It’s close. I want to rest.”
As if she could never win against her, Qi Sijia sneered and exposed her without mercy. “There are better hotel options at the same distance.”
Meng Jiang raised an eyebrow. Perhaps she was also angered by her unfeeling attitude all night and refused to back down. “You know a lot. But tonight, I just want to stay there.”
Their gazes met in mid-air, in a flash of lightning.
Qi Sijia gave a fake smile, suddenly stepped on the gas, and accelerated.
A few minutes later, the car stopped at a parking space on the side of the road.
“We’re here.”
Qi Sijia said, “You said you wanted to ask me a question just now. You can say it now.”
“Forget it, I don’t want to ask now.”
Qi Sijia was speechless. “…”
For the first time, she realized that this person had categorized her as someone easy to handle. In this world, it’s not like Miss Meng can have whatever she wants.
No matter how good the other person was at social etiquette, she could be soft when she could, use both soft and hard tactics, and achieve her goals step by step.
But Qi Sijia had broken up with her, and there was absolutely no possibility of getting back together. She didn’t even want to investigate Meng Jiang’s current intentions for getting close to her. After all, no matter how far-fetched it was, they needed a boundary after breaking up.
Just as she was about to speak, Meng Jiang opened her mouth. “Because I’m feeling a little nauseous now.”
Qi Sijia pursed her lips and glanced at Meng Jiang in the rearview mirror. She didn’t know when Meng Jiang had opened the window. One arm was resting on the window sill. Next to the car was a very bright streetlight. With the help of the light, Qi Sijia found that Meng Jiang was curled up with her long legs, her eyelashes lowered, and her lips were frighteningly pale.
“Did I drive too fast?”
Meng Jiang shook her head. “Stomachache.”
No appetite all day, plus drinking on an empty stomach at night.
…
“Is metoclopramide okay?”
Meng Jiang blinked and shook her head sincerely. “The food you make is okay.”
She was not lying. Meng Jiang’s pickiness about food was probably something only Qi Sijia remembered vividly.
So tonight, after going around in such a big circle, first she had something to ask but didn’t say a word in the car, and then she chose a hotel near Qi Sijia’s house.
All of this was just to make it convenient to enter her house.
“I see…” Qi Sijia glanced at her, a hint of impatience at being calculated finally showing in her eyes. “Is it interesting, Meng Jiang? What reason do you think I have to take you home?”
Being asked this, Meng Jiang was speechless. She lowered her eyes and said nothing.
The next second, the car door slammed shut with a “thud.”
Meng Jiang clicked her tongue, thinking to herself, She didn’t used to say that.
A tiger in a flat land is bullied by a dog. She’s not giving me any human kindness.
After getting out of the car, she managed to walk a few steps, her body swaying. Her head was a little dizzy. Meng Jiang stumbled a few steps, and with the support of a utility pole, she managed to stand up straight.
Just as she was about to continue towards the hotel, the car door was suddenly opened again. Qi Sijia’s lips were pulled straight as she walked over in a few steps.
She held up an umbrella and placed it over Meng Jiang’s head.
“Meng Jiang.”
Meng Jiang ignored her.
Qi Sijia called out again.
She frowned and said, “The food I make is not good.”
Hearing this, Meng Jiang turned around, her eyes suddenly brightening. She curled her lips and said, “It doesn’t matter what I eat, as long as it’s clean.”
“Tonight, I’m staying…”
Qi Sijia saw Meng Jiang’s dark eyes brighten in an instant.
She turned around and paused, her shadow stretched long by the streetlight. She walked a few steps and then turned back.
Her tone was not good. “At my place.”
Meng Jiang smiled brightly. “Okay.”
The Juzi Express Hotel was less than two hundred meters from the apartment building.
This place was really dilapidated.
Wearing nude high heels, Meng Jiang could even walk without making a sound.
She followed behind Qi Sijia gracefully, turning left and right.
Walking in this corridor that did not match her aura, Qi Sijia slowed down and turned back to Meng Jiang. “Are you okay?”
Her gaze landed on her stomach, which she was clutching.
“Mmm.”
The corridor was too dusty, and the air was full of turbid particles. Meng Jiang squinted her eyes in disgust. The surrounding lights were dim, and cobwebs were everywhere. The stairs were covered in a thick layer of dust.
“It’s so dirty. Didn’t you hire a cleaner?” Her eyes had nowhere to rest, so she could only stare at Qi Sijia’s side profile. Miss Meng, who had gone to great lengths to enter her house, finally couldn’t hold back her cleanliness obsession and asked.
Seeing the composure disappear from her eyes, Qi Sijia curled her lips. “I did.”
“The cleaning is done like this. I suggest you complain.”
Qi Sijia hummed in agreement.
Suddenly thinking of something, she stood still and looked at Meng Jiang suspiciously for a moment. Her gaze fell on the back of her hand, which was covering her stomach. She suddenly asked, “What did you just say?”
