Chapter 35 p1
Meimei’s psychological examination took three hours. Jiang Jun brought the child out, and the child’s mood was not high.
On the way back to school, Qi Sijia and Meng Jiang tacitly did not speak again. She quietly listened to Meng Jiang chatting with the child.
They were all routine questions. It was clear that Meng Jiang was a little worried about the child’s emotions.
When the car arrived at the school, Meimei’s homeroom teacher was waiting at the school gate. Meng Jiang went up to exchange pleasantries with the homeroom teacher.
Qi Sijia glanced at the little girl squatting at the back of the car, counting ants. She walked over and took out a piece of candy from her pocket.
The candy was something she always carried with her, a habit of many years. It was suitable for herself, but not limited to others.
Qi Sijia gently placed the candy in the child’s palm.
Meimei looked up at her.
Qi Sijia said, “Eat it. It will be sweet after you eat it.”
When Meng Jiang turned her head, she saw Meimei staring at her palm with hesitation. She then glanced over as well.
It was a piece of fruit candy wrapped in colorful candy paper.
A small piece, like a colorful world.
Qi Sijia said that after eating it, the world would be sweet.
After the homeroom teacher took Meimei back, Meng Jiang’s gaze lingered on Qi Sijia’s face for a long time before returning to normal.
Feeling that her gaze was too direct, she coughed and walked to Qi Sijia’s side.
She told her that she was going to drive back to the counseling room to ask Jiang Jun about the examination results.
“Shall I take you back first?” Although she said this, Meng Jiang subjectively did not want to separate. She had a feeling that she couldn’t describe this day. Even if they didn’t talk, it was very comfortable just being together.
She thought for a moment, a very immature way of doing things.
She put her hand into her bag, pressed the power off button, and then pretended to take out her phone and say that it was out of battery, asking Qi Sijia if she could help her with the navigation.
Qi Sijia raised an eyebrow. It was unclear if she had seen through her little trick. She didn’t say whether she would help or not. She slowly walked to Meng Jiang’s car, waited for Meng Jiang to catch up, and then suddenly stretched out her hand, taking the car keys from Meng Jiang’s palm and putting them on her own fingers.
“Let’s go. I’m a little tired,” Qi Sijia said.
Meng Jiang was stunned for a few seconds, then reacted and said with a smile, “Thank you.”
It was a little late, and most of the psychologists were about to get off work.
Jiang Jun’s office was still lit. He was waiting for Meng Jiang.
When Meng Jiang came over, the two of them did not avoid Qi Sijia.
“Preliminary diagnosis is autism combined with bipolar disorder.”
Meng Jiang frowned. “Tell me more.”
“The child’s psychological problems have been going on for more than five years. It was discovered and treated late. Especially after being autistic for a long time, self-awareness, behavioral awareness, and life awareness will all cause a series of cognitive impairments. I suggest finding a psychologist with stronger professional expertise for consultation.”
Meng Jiang asked Jiang Jun if he had any recommendations. Jiang Jun said that foreign experts might be better than domestic ones.
But at present, it was difficult to get an appointment with a top psychologist in the field.
“My level is not enough to help you get an appointment with a top foreign psychologist.”
As Jiang Jun spoke, his voice suddenly disappeared.
Meng Jiang followed his gaze and saw a long corridor in the psychological counseling room. Qi Sijia was sitting on a dilapidated long bench.
Long black hair, tied in a fishtail braid and draped over her right shoulder.
When someone passed by her, she lowered her shoulders, her eyes showing a kind of indifference.
It was strange to wear a gas mask to school. A black mask covered her mouth and nose. From her exposed eyebrows and eyes, you could see her beautiful features, but her eyes were overly cold.
Just now, when she mentioned Meimei, Meng Jiang’s face was smiling. Now, the smile on her lips faded a little. She turned her steps without a trace and blocked Jiang Jun’s sizing up gaze. “What are you looking at?”
“Your friend’s eyes are a bit similar to Meimei’s.”
Meng Jiang knew it the first time she saw Meimei.
“Is there a problem?”
“In psychology, autism, depression, bipolar disorder, and so on are all collectively referred to as mental illness. In fact, these psychological problems will eventually merge and develop into depression, with similar manifestations, such as not liking to talk, avoiding communication, panic in crowds, hysteria, and so on.”
Jiang Jun did not miss the change in Meng Jiang’s expression. He asked tentatively, “Is she taking medication?”
Meng Jiang did not know.
“You suspect Qi Sijia has depression?”
“My professional level is not enough,” Jiang Jun said. “A systematic test is needed to know, but I was rejected by your friend.”
This time, Meng Jiang was silent for a long time.
Jiang Jun comforted her, “A verbal judgment is not necessarily accurate. Her situation is different from Meimei’s. When she’s with you, I can feel that her communication skills are normal and her thinking is clear. This doesn’t fit the symptoms of depression.”
“Then you must have made a wrong judgment,” Meng Jiang emphasized. “Qi Sijia was like this five years ago. She doesn’t like to talk.”
“I hope it’s my illusion,” Jiang Jun shrugged and watched the two of them leave.
There was no five-star hotel in the county. Meng Jiang was delicate. Every time she came, she brought a new set of bedsheets.
But there was only one set. She looked back at Qi Sijia.
She said tactfully, “The conditions here are not good. There are many mosquitoes, and the bedsheets are not clean. You don’t have new cotton wadding. Will you not be used to it?”
Qi Sijia almost said, I’m not you. She raised an eyebrow. “Why would I not be used to it? This is my grandmother’s hometown. I’ve probably been here more times than you.”
A casual retort was originally intended to reject Meng Jiang’s attempt to sleep together.
But after she said it, both of them were stunned.
A smile appeared in Meng Jiang’s eyes. She deliberately raised her voice and said “oh.” “What a coincidence. I have a junior who is also from Nanxian.”
Qi Sijia also followed her and smiled. “Is that so? What’s her name? Tell me and I’ll see if I have an impression.”
The smile on Meng Jiang’s lips grew wider. The two of them walked to the hotel lobby. There were many people around, but she was not afraid of being photographed. She deftly took off her mask.
“You don’t look surprised at all.”
Qi Sijia ignored her teasing, took two room cards from the front desk, and handed Meng Jiang’s to her. “After all, you never hid it.”
“I hinted so many times and went to great lengths to give you my old phone number?” Meng Jiang said bluntly. “Do you still remember that number?”
Qi Sijia lowered her eyes. “It was even earlier.”
Meng Jiang was stunned. “What?”
“That night in your car, when I was asleep, you played Hua Dan,” Qi Sijia told her honestly. Her answer was natural, as if she didn’t think there was any need to delve into the awkwardness or grudges in this matter.
This made Meng Jiang speechless. The two of them took the elevator upstairs. When the elevator doors opened, Meng Jiang finally reacted.
She raised an eyebrow and did not miss any expression on Qi Sijia’s face, confirming that she had not misunderstood.
As if it were a green light, she smiled again.
Her tone was even more cheerful. “Then our dinner together tonight doesn’t count as the invitation for tomorrow night, right?”
After a long day of travel, Qi Sijia was a little tired. She glanced at Meng Jiang and was about to say it was troublesome, but after thinking about it, she still nodded. “It doesn’t count.”
She actually had something to say to Meng Jiang. After taking off their masks and breaking through that layer of relationship, it was to inform her in advance that she was going abroad. Otherwise, it would be very inappropriate for Meng Jiang to come all the way here to deliver food for nothing.
After a long day of travel, Qi Sijia and Meng Jiang went back to the hotel to rest until evening before going out for a late-night snack.
Nanxian did not have a bustling town. There was a not-so-long night market with a few scattered vendors. On the checkered tricycles, there was fried rice, grilled squid, stinky tofu, and potstickers.
Qi Sijia looked sideways and saw Meng Jiang frowning at the street food drizzled with soy sauce. She knew that she couldn’t eat it.
“What do you usually eat when you come here?”
“Instant noodles,” Meng Jiang said. “Without chili oil.”
Qi Sijia didn’t have much of an appetite. After wandering around, she didn’t want to eat anything, so she said to Meng Jiang, “Alright, let’s go back and eat instant noodles.”
But the two of them didn’t get to eat the instant noodles. Something happened to Meimei.
The school informed them that the child had a fever at school. Fortunately, it was discovered in time and she was sent to the hospital. Otherwise, she would have burned to death.
Meimei’s parents had been working out of town for ten years and had not come back. Her grandparents were almost seventy and couldn’t take care of a little girl.
In the middle of the night, since Meng Jiang was here, the teacher contacted Meng Jiang.
It was snowing outside. Meng Jiang jumped into the driver’s seat, but Qi Sijia pulled her out.
“I’ll drive,” Qi Sijia urged. “Get in.”
In fact, when she was driving this morning, Qi Sijia had already seen that Meng Jiang was not familiar with the road conditions here. She probably usually came with a driver.
Meng Jiang sat in the passenger seat, not knowing what she was thinking. She lowered her eyes and, from the corner of her eye, wantonly sketched Qi Sijia’s side profile.
“Qi Sijia, why are you so likable?”
Qi Sijia did not reply to her. The car was still driving very steadily, as if in a trance.
After arriving at the hospital, the doctor said that the child was in the intensive care unit and was not in any danger, but she would continue to have a high fever at night. Considering the child’s special situation, a special nurse had been arranged.
Of course, the cost of hiring a special nurse was on Meng Jiang’s bill.
But before she could finish, the special nurse frantically pressed the bell and called the on-duty doctor and nurse over.
Meimei woke up, saw the needle, and screamed, struggling wildly, shattering all the liquids.
Qi Sijia saw Meng Jiang negotiating with the nurses and doctors. She paid for what needed to be paid for and coordinated the work.
Finally, she went to Meimei’s room. Meng Jiang did not say a single harsh word, just stroked the child’s head.
Meng Jiang said to her, “It’s okay, don’t be afraid.”
The child’s eyes were dark, filled with fear and coldness. But under Meng Jiang’s comfort, she slowly calmed down from the panic caused by the strange environment. Ten minutes later, she closed her eyes and fell asleep.
…
Worried that Meimei would have another episode in the middle of the night, the doctor gave the child a sedative.
Meng Jiang climbed onto the windowsill on the far left of the hospital corridor, blowing in the cold wind. Qi Sijia pushed open the door and walked over.
Seeing her long, curly hair blowing wildly, she closed the door and said, “Isn’t it tiring to take care of a child like this? She might have another episode and scratch you again.”
Meng Jiang was silent for a moment before she said, “No, it was the most difficult year for me. I couldn’t get out of my role.”
“Which one?”
“Breakup.”
Qi Sijia had not seen any of Meng Jiang’s movies, but she knew the name of this movie. Two years ago, this drama almost pushed the young actress Meng Jiang to the world-class actress’s altar.
The media reported it everywhere. I’m afraid the whole country praised the height this film had reached.
“It’s hard to believe, right? It’s the worst movie I’ve ever acted in.” There was not much expression on Meng Jiang’s face. Perhaps her emotions had reached that point. She asked Qi Sijia, “Do you know why?”
Qi Sijia followed her words and asked, “Why?”
“Because I was acting as myself. The part where I broke up with my first love five years ago.”
This was a topic Qi Sijia couldn’t answer. She silently looked at the dark night behind Meng Jiang.
Fortunately, the famous actress Meng was best at throwing out jokes when others were at a loss for words. She quickly changed the subject. “It’s a very scary thing for an actor to not be able to get out of character. On the third day of the new year, I was sent to Nanxian by the driver. All I could see was desolation. Because I couldn’t find that bit of light in the vast sea of people, I wandered around this small county like a ghost, and then I met Meimei.”
Qi Sijia said, “So you sponsored her?”
Surprisingly, Meng Jiang shook her head and said, “No.”
“This child threw a stone at my head. Perhaps seeing that I didn’t react, she went home and got a piece of candy and put it in my hand.”
Meng Jiang was the one talking from beginning to end. Qi Sijia did not speak and patiently listened. She saw Meng Jiang suddenly turn her head and stare at her eyes. “That piece of candy brought me out of my character.”
Qi Sijia felt her throat go a little dry.
“Aren’t you going to ask why?” Meng Jiang asked. Seeing that Qi Sijia was just looking at her and not speaking, Meng Jiang laughed softly. “Alright, I’ll tell you next time.”
…
