Chapter 42 p2
After hanging up the phone, Meng Jiang slept in the nanny van for a full seven hours and finally arrived in Chicago.
At eight at night, the lights were intertwined, and the colorful fountain was colorful, just as Alexia had described, full of artistic conception.
The party was on Buckingham’s side.
Chen Cheng was confused why Meng Jiang didn’t go directly to Qi Sijia. The phone conversation at noon had been quite harmonious. If she had brought up the topic at night, the month-long gloom between them would have been resolved.
And there wasn’t much time left tonight. Meng Jiang had to rush back to the crew tomorrow morning. If they continued to waste time like this, there wouldn’t be much time for warmth.
Meng Jiang held her tall glass and said, “You don’t understand. If I go like this, she might not even let me in.”
Chen Cheng’s eyes were full of admiration. She called the waiter over. “Bring two of the strongest drinks.”
None of them had had dinner. The party was not in a hurry to start. Alexia had arranged a restaurant to entertain Meng Jiang.
So before they could drink the two strong drinks, Meng Jiang was invited over by the enthusiastic host. Alexia had some connections. The group of people she had called were all well-known screenwriters and producers in the industry.
Those she knew and didn’t know were all the talent that Meng Luo desperately needed to rope in at the moment.
Chen Cheng put on a smile and whispered in Meng Jiang’s ear, “What should we do?”
Meng Jiang’s smile was elegant. She looked up, but her tone was not as gentle and charming as her expression. She said softly to Chen Cheng, “Don’t worry, I won’t be blinded by lust.”
With that, Meng Jiang’s gaze fell on Alexia, who had invited her to dinner.
“Alright.”
The party was going to last until late at night. The carnival outside had just begun, but the dinner table was quiet.
Meng Jiang’s status was different. She was not only a famous actress but also an investor. She represented Luo Meng to the outside world, so Alexia brought Meng Jiang to a private room.
The vice president of RENAISSANCE STUDIO’s Chicago branch, who was sitting in the middle, stood up and arranged his seat for Meng Jiang.
Everyone had seen each other at the dinner party last time. Alexia said, “Uncle Jin, where are my dad and senior sister?”
“Something came up at the studio, so they couldn’t come.”
Alexia pouted and complained, “What’s the matter? They’re not even coming for my birthday.”
Only then did Meng Jiang know that it was this young lady’s birthday. Of course, she hadn’t prepared a gift, but Meng Jiang was never short of this kind of thoughtfulness.
After saying a few words in Chen Cheng’s ear, ten minutes later, a hastily prepared gift was sent out.
It was a brooch, a women’s model from last year’s Paris Fashion Week. It was neither over the top nor would it give people any room for imagination.
Alexia raised an eyebrow and accepted the gift. She probably understood what Meng Jiang meant.
A brooch is given by an elder to a junior, not to a partner.
A large table, with people of all statuses. Meng Jiang’s knowledge was such that she would not be at a loss for words with anyone.
But today, there were two South African screenwriters at the round table who were shamelessly asking President Jin to help them change their scripts. These two screenwriters were former disciples of Right, and they had been able to come to the party entirely because of President Jin’s old feelings.
But the two of them didn’t give President Jin any face at all. They had drunk too much, and they had been rejected for changing the script.
Their tongues were trembling as they said in not-so-authentic American English, “What’s so hard to explain? I hate plagiarism the most in my life.”
“Right is even less tolerant of plagiarism than we are. He has been upright all his life. He didn’t tolerate it when he was young, but now that he’s old, he has a disgraceful little disciple and has put up with it.”
Another screenwriter chimed in, “The announcement of the revision time for the creative script will not affect her at all. If she claims to be innocent, why is she being so secretive?”
With such a conversation full of open and hidden attacks and insinuations, the topic of ridicule was directly directed at the plagiarism scandal that RENAISSANCE STUDIO was embroiled in today.
Everyone at the table turned their gazes to President Jin, Alexia, and Sam, who were at the head of the table.
The former’s face had already turned cold. Alexia and Sam lowered their heads, probably looking at today’s news. A moment later, their faces also turned ugly.
At this table today, except for the two people who were talking trash and causing trouble, they were all famous people in the industry. Everyone wore multiple masks, and their emotions were not shown on their faces. There was no need to lose face over two gossipy screenwriters.
Meng Jiang lazily yawned, glanced at the three people at the center of the storm, and while watching the show, she commented to herself, These three are quite calm.
But the two South African screenwriters were not going to let it go. They were going crazy from drinking. After a round of words, they went up to President Jin and were about to continue talking.
But one of them suddenly turned to Meng Jiang.
“You are Meng…”
“Mmm,” Meng Jiang interrupted him, her smile not reaching her eyes.
This meant that she was not giving him face to talk.
But—
“Chinese?” The South African screenwriter seemed to have found a breakthrough to continue from Meng Jiang’s dark eyes and skin color. He said to President Jin, “What a coincidence, this person is from the same country as Qi Sijia.”
The three words “Qi Sijia” were suddenly spoken by a person from a foreign country. Meng Jiang was slightly stunned.
At this time, President Jin, who was sitting next to her, couldn’t sit still. He patted the table and warned him, “Lethabo!”
“What’s wrong? Senior brother, at a family party, you’re not even letting me talk? Qi Sijia has no fame at all in China. I haven’t seen her release any new works in five years. She’s not even worried about her name being known by outsiders. What are you worried about?”
Meng Jiang suddenly opened her eyes, put down her wine glass, and looked at the swirling scarlet alcohol. She confirmed that she was not drunk. She had only taken a small sip of this wine.
Next to her was Alexia.
Meng Jiang looked sideways and asked her, “Qi Sijia?”
“My senior sister, Jia. Lethabo is finished. He doesn’t want his career anymore.”
Alexia’s face looked a little ugly, her fingertips turning white with anger. A prominent green vein was clearly visible on the back of her hand.
She told Meng Jiang that the facts were not as he had said, and that the industry had its own judgment of Jia.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t expect tonight to turn out like this.”
Meng Jiang lowered her eyes, hiding the shock, absurdity, and other emotions in them. Before this emotion had time to settle, she heard the South African screenwriter’s sharp slander again.
“When I copied a small passage of Qi Sijia’s work, everyone said that plagiarism was not tolerated. But the law would not pay for these plagiarized words. You didn’t consider our old relationship and kicked me out of the school. Now what? Relying on the master’s favoritism and the best resources given by RENAISSANCE STUDIO, she has become a well-known up-and-coming screenwriter. Why is she still plagiarizing others’ creativity? She’s a rising star in the screenwriting world, yet her hands are so unclean—”
Before he could finish, with a “thud,” a tall glass with half a glass of wine was suddenly thrown onto the table next to the black screenwriter’s hand.
The liquid and shards of glass splashed all over him.
The others had not yet recovered from this sudden outburst.
Meng Jiang slowly stood up, a smile gone from her face.
She looked up and glanced at the two of them. “You talk so much. Where are your manners?”
“Before you slander others, shouldn’t you consider the relationships of those around you?”
Meng Jiang’s question left the South African screenwriter speechless. After all, it shouldn’t have been her who stood up for Qi Sijia. For her, a guest with no connection, to suddenly stand up made the whole scene a little strange.
One of the fatter South African screenwriters came to his senses. He asked dryly, “Who are you?”
Meng Jiang lowered her eyelids and said, “I am Qi Sijia’s…”
Her voice suddenly stopped. Meng Jiang sneered through her nose. “Friend.”
“Slander is it—” Meng Jiang pointed a finger at Sam, who was recording.
“Go to jail.”
Sam and his junior sister looked at each other, a look of embarrassment in their eyes. President Jin was older than them and even more embarrassed. After all, their direct senior brother and sister’s reaction speed was a little slower than Meng Jiang’s.
Realizing it, President Jin put on a smile and waved Meng Jiang over for a drink.
Meng Jiang said, “This banquet is over.”
With her status, even if she wanted to break into the European and American network, the capital circle was never short of scripts. She didn’t need to give anyone face.
If the money was enough, she could have anything.
When she was willing, Meng Jiang would give people three parts face. When she was not willing, she was always decisive. Everyone should not think that just because she had a kind and benevolent smile, she could be a bodhisattva and save all sentient beings.
After greeting Alexia, Meng Jiang, having vented her anger, walked straight out. As she passed behind the two South African screenwriters, Meng Jiang sneered, “I wouldn’t even scold her. What are you?”
After leaving the restaurant, the cold wind blew over, but the anger was still stuck in her throat.
Chen Cheng was seeing for the first time that a master of social etiquette like Meng Jiang would get angry over two people who couldn’t even make it to the stage.
Just as she was about to speak, Sam chased after her and explained that his junior sister couldn’t leave and had come out to see Meng Jiang off.
“Hey, I’m so sorry about what happened today.”
“You and my junior sister also know each other?” After working together in the same crew for so long, this was the first time Sam had taken the initiative to talk to her.
Meng Jiang hummed in agreement, not intending to speak.
This journey to the car was still fifty meters. Sam smiled and tried to find a topic. “Last time I called and mentioned that you were on set, she didn’t say a word. We’re all acquaintances, yet she didn’t agree to join the group.”
Meng Jiang frowned. “You said I was on set, and she didn’t agree?”
Sam suddenly felt a little cold. He rubbed his arms and said, puzzled, “Last time I told her a lot about you, that you have good acting skills and high standards, and I couldn’t handle it. I asked her to come and join the group. Hey… now that this plagiarism thing has happened, my script is completely hopeless.”
Meng Jiang lifted her eyelids and looked deeply at Sam. She didn’t listen to what he said after that, but she understood what he had said before.
It was raining outside, and the raindrops hit her face.
In what capacity was she standing up for Qi Sijia? She was never on the right path, always chasing after the other party who was running away.
And today, with a sudden blow, when others were talking about Qi Sijia, Meng Jiang suddenly realized that she didn’t even have the standing to stand up for her.
She was a person without an identity.
In the shadows, Meng Jiang curled her lips, took the coat from the driver, draped it over her arm, and said to Chen Cheng, “Let’s go.”
Chen Cheng said, “Aren’t you going to get drunk?”
Meng Jiang glanced at her. “Let’s go.”
The car door opened, and Meng Jiang finally looked at the sky, which was pitch black.
Being in the same sky, breathing the same air as the person she wanted to see was originally a very romantic thing, but this rain was terrible.
The only villains are black….of course 😮💨
