Chapter 77: Bite Blocker and Handcuffs
“Beep—”
The time on the watch turned back to ten days ago.
In the large conference hall, the Trial Court personnel sat in their respective seats. Secretary-General Wei Lingyu brought up the data and read out the results of the joint investigation.
“After a joint investigation by various countries, of the 1665 people who matched Li Er’s description, only two had indirect contact with the SE Group.”
“Zhou Weiqian, sixty-five years old, naturally white-haired, with a black plum blossom tattoo on her left pinky finger, is an animal keeper at the A City Zoo in Moli. Coincidentally, the other investigation subject who matches the description is also named Zhou Weiqian, sixty-five years old, naturally white-haired, with a black rose tattoo on her left pinky finger, is an animal keeper at the C City Zoo in Taiya.”
“These are their profiles. Their life trajectories are highly overlapping, and their appearances are also very similar.” Wei Lingyu pointed out the latter. “However, Zhou Weiqian in Taiya is a changed name, her former name was Zhou Qian.”
Hearing this, Zhu Yiqiao, sitting at the head of the table, her eyes darkened.
When they, together with the military, arrested Li Er, the research institute personnel were conducting a gene transaction. During the stakeout, she heard someone in the command room call Li Er “Diamond One.”
Plum blossom, rose, diamond.
The overlap of these elements reminded her of playing cards. The diamond in playing cards symbolized wealth, and Li Er, before being arrested, was a major shareholder of the Ding An Group in Moli, ranked among the top 50 richest people in the world for many years.
Based on the suits of playing cards, the club symbolized luck. Zhou Weiqian at the A City Zoo in Moli was a lion keeper, and lions represented courage in the natural world. Zhou Weiqian at the C City Zoo in Taiya, however, had always stayed in the fish forest. Swimming in the fish forest were Taiya’s endangered species—Rui fish, named Rui because they often brought good luck.
As everyone pondered the high degree of overlap between the two, Lan Lubai on the right rested her chin on one hand, her brow slightly furrowed, while Min Man opposite her pursed her lips, her gaze darkening.
Zhu Yiqiao examined the profiles on the right side of the floating screen. She didn’t think the person behind the research institute would be hiding among these two, but she was certain that one of them must be a core member.
The sudden notification sound of an incoming message was like a taut string about to snap in the coming storm.
After reading the latest message from the military, Wei Lingyu’s face immediately darkened.
She said, “According to the latest news from the military, both Zhou Weiqians disappeared ten minutes ago.”
Because of the disappearance of the two major suspects, Zhu Yiqiao, as the person in charge of the case, had to immediately leave for Taiya.
The situation was too sudden, leaving her with only half an hour to say goodbye. She originally planned to return to the villa or have Ming Fei come over for another marking, but a missed connection at the transit station cut her time short by ten minutes, leaving her with only twenty minutes.
The hovercar ride from the villa to the Trial Court took fifteen minutes, so there wasn’t enough time for a temporary marking.
She made a call, but Ming Fei didn’t answer after three attempts. Glancing at the time on her watch, she instead left a farewell video message and fastened her silver-black pistol to her waist.
Before leaving, she left a secret order for the hired protection team.
On the first day after arriving in Taiya, the police still found nothing. It wasn’t until the third day that they received a call for help from Zhou Weiqian with the rose tattoo.
In her call, she accused the other Zhou Weiqian, originally in Moli, of kidnapping her. After being transferred to multiple locations, she seized the opportunity to knock out her guard and quickly used the person’s phone to make the call.
The whole thing was full of holes. When the police and military personnel arrived at the scene, everyone witnessed Zhou Weiqian, who had been accused of kidnapping, stabbing Zhou Weiqian, who had called for help. And Zhou Weiqian, who had made the call, reacted quickly and deftly redirected the knife with a legitimate self-defense move.
Everything that followed spiraled out of control.
Fortunately, Zhou Weiqian, who had been accused of kidnapping and stabbed, survived after emergency treatment in a medical pod.
She provided a lot of clues about the kidnapping, and the investigators in Moli discovered the inconsistencies. Under investigation by the Taiya police and the Trial Court, the injured Zhou Weiqian was finally cleared of suspicion, and the other Zhou Weiqian, who had orchestrated the whole thing, was sentenced to death for intentional homicide, gene trafficking, and other crimes.
On the eighth day, Zhou Weiqian, who had been convicted, was escorted to the special high-security prison jointly established by ten countries.
On the ninth day, under the leadership of Chief Judge Zhu Yiqiao, after joint consultation between high-ranking officials from several countries, a new plan was formulated to capture the true culprit behind the research institute.
On the tenth day, the high-ranking officials from various countries returned home.
…
“Beep—”
“This journey is about to end, please pay attention…”
The hovercar arrived at the villa. After getting out, Zhu Yiqiao glanced at the time on her watch. It was 5:30 pm, and the garden, bathed in the afterglow of the setting sun, was filled with the fragrance of flowers, as beautiful as a colorful painting.
As a rose petal fell to the ground, Zhu Yiqiao held her Trial Court uniform jacket and cap in her right hand and the gifts she had prepared for Ming Fei and Ming Zaozao in her left.
After ten days of separation, her longing reached its peak with the conclusion of the kidnapping case.
Walking along the garden path into the living room, she didn’t find them on the first floor, not even 008 and 0619. She put down her jacket and cap, carrying the gifts as she walked towards the stairs.
As she took her first step onto the stairs, she sensed the overflowing pear scent.
All the rooms in the villa were pheromone-proofed, and pheromones wouldn’t leak out under normal circumstances. She immediately reacted and hurried to the second floor. The moment she pushed open the door, an overwhelming pear scent surged towards her, enticing her own pine and fir scent to overflow as well.
The curtains of the French window weren’t completely closed, and a few rays of light streamed in. In the flickering light and shadows, Zhu Yiqiao saw Ming Fei’s current state.
Her long black hair cascaded down to her waist, two buttons of her pajamas undone, her porcelain-white face flushed crimson, her eyes red, her ears red as well. Perhaps to prevent herself from losing control, she was wearing a black bite blocker, and her other hand was cuffed with a silver handcuff.
But the handcuff wasn’t properly fastened. Seeing Zhu Yiqiao, she seemed stunned for a moment.
Her voice was low: “…Jiejie.”
