Chapter 23: A Woman’s Heart
That night.
The carriage Mu Zhi’an was riding in was driving on the streets late at night, stopping before reaching the Bai residence.
Mu Zhi’an jumped off the carriage, came to Bai Ruoxi’s side, lifted the curtain, and extended his hand towards her.
Bai Ruoxi glanced at him in the darkness and reached out to hold that hand, using it to get off the carriage.
She swept her gaze around the surroundings and finally couldn’t help but ask,
“Young Master Mu, why are we sneaking into the Bai residence?”
This was clearly her family’s mansion, yet Mu Zhi’an was making her sneak into the Bai residence late at night like a thief, which was truly unthinkable.
“Miss Bai, do you know where Uncle Bai is recuperating after being ambushed and severely injured?” Mu Zhi’an asked.
Bai Ruoxi was stunned, first surprised that Mu Zhi’an would know about this matter.
But on second thought, it had been such a long time since seeing the patriarch of the Bai family. With the Mu family’s power in Tianxuan City, it wasn’t difficult to secretly investigate some things.
She said softly, “My father is recuperating in a very safe place now, with two guards taking turns guarding him.”
“In other words, the one managing the Bai residence now is your mother, right?” Mu Zhi’an asked.
Bai Ruoxi hesitated for a moment and nodded slightly.
“In other words, after Miss Bai left, there are only a few servants left in the Bai residence, and only Madam Bai is alone, correct?” Mu Zhi’an confirmed again.
“Young Master Mu, what exactly do you want to say?” Bai Ruoxi frowned slightly, inexplicably feeling a bit uncomfortable in her heart.
“Miss Bai will know in a bit.” Mu Zhi’an paused, “However, it might have to wait until tomorrow night.”
As he spoke, he turned his head to look at the maidservant hidden in the darkness and said, “Sister Mengrou, I’ll leave it to you.”
Bai Ruoxi subconsciously looked back and only then discovered that, at some unknown time, a woman had been following behind them. She wore a yellow long dress and stepped on a pair of short boots. Although her attire was bright, she seemed to blend into the night.
If Mu Zhi’an hadn’t spoken up, Bai Ruoxi probably wouldn’t have noticed the existence of this maidservant even now.
“Don’t be surprised. To say the least, she is absolutely at the top in terms of concealing her aura among those in the Spirit Refinement realm.” Mu Zhi’an explained.
Among the Spirit Refinement realm cultivators Mu Zhi’an knew, Wei Mengyou’s strength might not be the strongest, but her abilities were the most convenient.
The reason why the black-robed man’s intelligence had discrepancies that day was also because Wei Mengrou’s aura concealment ability had reached the pinnacle. He hadn’t noticed that besides the old master, there was also a Wei Mengrou who constantly concealed her own aura in the Bai residence.
Also because of this, Mu Zhi’an had never treated Wei Mengrou as a maidservant from beginning to end.
After all, if you had never treated others sincerely, how could you expect others to treat you sincerely?
“Don’t exceed half an hour. After that time, I can’t guarantee that you two won’t be noticed by others.” Wei Mengrou solemnly warned.
Mu Zhi’an nodded and looked at the girl beside him, saying, “Let’s go.”
Bai Ruoxi was a bit confused, but seeing that Mu Zhi’an had already jumped onto the wall of the mansion, she didn’t hesitate any longer. She stepped on the ground, lightly leaped up, and landed on the wall.
Then, she turned her head to look at Mu Zhi’an and said softly, “Young Master Mu, what exactly do you want to do?”
Mu Zhi’an’s gaze surveyed the surroundings of the mansion. It was nighttime now, and moonlight shone into the courtyard. The wind blew and the leaves rustled in the darkness.
It seemed that the Bai residence indeed didn’t have many servants now… Mu Zhi’an inwardly understood and glanced at Bai Ruoxi, saying,
“Wait for me here for a bit. I’ll be right back.”
Before Bai Ruoxi could speak, Mu Zhi’an had already leaped down from the wall.
If the Qi Refinement stage was just simply strengthening one’s physique, then at the Foundation Establishment stage, one could use “qi”, the spiritual energy in the body.
Using this qi, anyone could walk on walls and fly on eaves.
Unfortunately, if I were at the Spirit Refinement realm now, I should be patrolling in midair on a flying sword… Mu Zhi’an strolled leisurely in the backyard of the Bai residence, feeling a bit regretful in his heart.
Although he thought about it, he didn’t dare to let his guard down. He silently walked in the courtyard of the Bai residence, searching for the room where Bai Yuanfeng resided.
His gaze quickly fell on the second room in the backyard. Behind that door, the flickering candlelight could be clearly seen, and a woman’s silhouette could be vaguely seen behind the door.
Although Wei Mengyou helped conceal his aura, just to be safe, Mu Zhi’an still concealed his own aura by himself.
He slowly stepped forward, came to the side of the door, and listened with his ear close.
He didn’t hear any sounds.
What a pity. I really don’t know why those paper doors that could be poked through with a finger in ancient times don’t exist here. Otherwise, at this moment, I could directly poke a hole in the door with my finger to see what the situation is inside.
Mu Zhi’an couldn’t help but feel a bit regretful in his heart.
However, he didn’t give up. His gaze searched around and quickly saw an open window beside the room.
He slightly adjusted his breathing and quietly stepped forward to look at the scene inside the window.
Then, his eyes immediately showed a bit of disappointment.
There was only Bai Yuanfeng alone sitting on the bed in the room, wearing a silk sleeping robe. After removing her light makeup, she suddenly looked much older, but her appearance could still be considered top-class among her peers.
It was just that after removing her makeup, there was still a considerable gap compared to her daughter.
Was the black-robed man lying to me, or was Bai Yuanfeng too cautious…?
Mu Zhi’an secretly thought.
Theoretically, the black-robed man shouldn’t have told such an easily exposed lie.
In other words, was Bai Yuanfeng indeed too cautious…?
Just as Mu Zhi’an thought of this, someone suddenly lightly tapped his shoulder from behind.
Mu Zhi’an’s heart jumped slightly, and he subconsciously turned his head to look.
Bai Ruoxi had unknowingly stood behind him, her beautiful eyes angry, but she tried her best to lower her voice and said, “Young Master Mu, why are you sneaking into my mother’s room late at night—”
Before she could finish, Mu Zhi’an suddenly felt a chill on his back. He covered Bai Ruoxi’s mouth with one hand, held her in his arms, and hid beside the window, pressed against the wall.
Bai Ruoxi’s eyes widened slightly as she turned her head in surprise to look at the young man behind her.
After finally pushing away Mu Zhi’an’s hand, she was about to ask, but at this moment, she suddenly seemed to sense something and subconsciously turned her head to look at midair.
In the originally silent backyard, a stream of light suddenly descended quietly.
As the light disappeared, a man who looked extremely majestic stepped down from a flying sword.
Gongsun Xiong.
Bai Ruoxi’s eyes slowly widened, unable to hide the shock in them.
How could Gongsun Xiong appear in the Bai residence?
And what shocked Bai Ruoxi even more was that, not long after, the door quietly opened, and Bai Yuanfeng pushed open the door with a smile, inviting Gongsun Xiong into the room.
