32: Savings
The battle between the demonic beasts and the cultivators in the forest must have lasted for a long time. The smell of blood in the air was very heavy, and there was even a faint feeling of a blood mist. If one stayed here for a while, their clothes might even change color.
After Mo Xiao and the others joined the battle, the human cultivators’ reinforcements also arrived. The city lord of Nanfeng City directly brought her personal guards to support them. Before long, they had cleared out the demonic beasts in the forest and began to settle the wounded.
“Thank you, fellow Daoists, for your help,” The city lord of Nanfeng City was a female cultivator at the late Nascent Soul stage. She wore silver-white armor, and her features were very heroic. Although her aura was very heavy, it did not give people too much of a sense of oppression.
“Slaying demonic beasts that cause chaos is the duty of a cultivator. You are too polite, City Lord,” Mo Xiao said. She was the closest to the city lord, and their gazes met for a moment before they both politely looked away.
“Looking at the direction you came from, you fellow Daoists should not be cultivators of Nanfeng City, right?” The city lord probed their cultivation levels and was a little surprised to find that there were three Nascent Soul stage cultivators with one Golden Core and one Foundation Establishment.
Such a combination was a bit rare. Were these disciples of a major family traveling with guards? Or were they elders taking their juniors out for training? Or some other combination?
Mo Xiao nodded. “We are out traveling and happened to be passing by. We saw the demonic beasts causing chaos and lent a hand.”
The city lord nodded and politely invited Mo Xiao’s group into the city, saying that she wanted to express the gratitude of the cultivators and people of Nanfeng City.
Mo Xiao had originally wanted to enter the city to rest. After exchanging a few pleasantries and basic information, she went along with the city lord.
Learning that they had never been to Nanfeng City before, the city lord enthusiastically introduced the situation in the city on the way back.
“Five hundred years ago, Nanfeng City was actually just an inconspicuous small town, surrounded by mountains on all sides. Very few cultivators were willing to stay here. If it weren’t for the appearance of several large secret realms nearby later, Nanfeng City would probably still be a small town.”
The city lord sighed. “But the appearance of the secret realms has its pros and cons. With more secret realms, there are more cultivators coming and going. In order to accommodate these people, Nanfeng City has been expanding outwards for the past few hundred years. The demonic beasts that originally lived nearby have also been driven into the depths of the forest by the cultivators.”
“Is the beast tide today also related to this?” Zuo Wuyi asked.
The city lord nodded, her expression becoming a little serious. “You are right, little Daoist, but in the past, the demonic beasts were basically some small Foundation Establishment and Qi Refinement stage beasts. This is the first time we’ve seen such a large-scale appearance of Golden Core stage demonic beasts.”
The city lord did not mention much about the beast tide, but changed the subject to the characteristics of Nanfeng City. “There are many cultivators coming and going here, and correspondingly, there are people selling all kinds of spirit artifacts, elixirs, and manuals. If you are interested, you can go to the commercial district on the west side. I can’t say that it has everything, but you will definitely be able to find what you need there.”
After successfully entering Nanfeng City, Mo Xiao’s group politely declined the city lord’s banquet. In the end, they couldn’t refuse and reluctantly accepted a few demonic beast inner cores as a thank-you gift.
“If you encounter any trouble in the city, you can come to the City Lord’s Mansion to find me. If there are no problems outside the city, I will usually be there,” the city lord said. If possible, she very much hoped that these people could stay here for a longer period of time.
“Then we will thank the City Lord in advance,” After spending more than half an hour together, this city lord gave Mo Xiao a good impression.
All five of them were a little interested in the commercial district the city lord had mentioned. Taking advantage of the fact that it was not yet dark, they headed directly to the west of the city.
The commercial district on the west side was just as the city lord had described. There were many cultivators on the streets. Some cultivators sat directly on the ground, casually displaying the things they wanted to sell in front of them. The more particular ones set up small stalls and placed their things on tables.
Looking down the street, one could hardly see the end, only a dazzling array of goods.
“There’s still some time before it gets dark. Why don’t we split up and meet here in an hour?” Yun Yu had originally not planned to buy anything, but after seeing so many stalls, her desire to buy suddenly came back.
“Alright, I was just thinking of buying some materials for artifact refining,” Qiu Wu was the first to agree.
Yun He quickly calculated her little savings in her heart. “I don’t have anything I particularly want. I’ll just go with Fellow Daoist Qiu.”
“Then I’ll go with Senior Sister,” Zuo Wuyi said, taking Mo Xiao’s hand and intertwining their fingers without any hesitation.
Yun Yu looked at Yun He and Qiu Wu, then at Zuo Wuyi and Mo Xiao’s intertwined hands. For a moment, she suddenly felt a little redundant.
“Then I’ll go with Yun He,” Of course, that feeling was really just for a moment. Yun Yu was not at ease with the combination of Yun He and Qiu Wu. Her intuition told her that if she didn’t follow them, they would definitely be targeted as fat sheep.
And so, the five of them split into two small teams and set off in different directions.
Mo Xiao had no need for these things. Besides, her storage space was full of supplies, enough for her to use for a long time.
“Wuyi, is there anything you want?” Mo Xiao asked. It seemed like it had been a long time since she had walked hand in hand with Zuo Wuyi like this.
“Hmm, I haven’t decided. Let’s just browse and choose,” Zuo Wuyi didn’t lack anything either. During the time Mo Xiao was in seclusion, she had deeply felt the care of her master, and her storage space was also full of good things.
But then again, shopping wasn’t necessarily about buying things. She could fully enjoy the process, this time she and Mo Xiao were spending alone together.
After casually looking at a few small stalls, Zuo Wuyi’s gaze was attracted by a cultivator in patched clothes. In front of him was a pile of black eggs.
“What are these? Are they demonic beast eggs?” Zuo Wuyi sensed a familiar aura from these black eggs.
“I don’t know. I found them in the forest outside. They should be eggs left by a demonic beast,” The one in patched clothes was a young girl, her cultivation only at the Qi Refinement stage.
“These eggs all have spiritual energy. Even if you can’t hatch a useful demonic beast, you can still make them into spirit food,” Seeing that Zuo Wuyi was interested in these black eggs, the little girl began to enthusiastically introduce them.
Zuo Wuyi squatted down and carefully examined these black eggs. “How many spirit stones if I want all of them?”
The little girl hesitated for a moment, then held up five fingers. “I… I want five mid-grade spirit stones.”
Five mid-grade spirit stones, that was five hundred low-grade spirit stones. For a low-level cultivator, this price was not low. Of course, Zuo Wuyi was not a low-level cultivator. Five mid-grade spirit stones were just a drop in the bucket for her.
“Is it convenient to tell me the specific location where you found these eggs?” Zuo Wuyi said, handing over the five mid-grade spirit stones.
The little girl carefully checked the quality of the spirit stones, then held them in her hands, a brilliant smile on her face.
“I found them yesterday. I went out of the city gate and walked east for an hour. I don’t know the specific location,” Five mid-grade spirit stones were enough for the little girl to use for a long time, so she honestly told her the location.
Zuo Wuyi nodded, then put all ten or so black eggs into her storage space. Seeing that the little girl was still holding the spirit stones in her hand, she asked with some curiosity, “Aren’t you worried that your spirit stones will be snatched if you just hold them like this?”
The little girl shook her head, her tone filled with some pride. “No, this is the commercial district designated by the city lord. If anyone dares to cause trouble here, the city lord will deal with those bad people.”
“How are you so sure the city lord will know?” Zuo Wuyi asked. “What if a bad person just snatches your money and runs away?”
The little girl thought for a moment, then shook her head. “I don’t know, but I just know that no one dares to do bad things here.”
Zuo Wuyi did not continue to ask, but patted the little girl’s head and watched her leave happily with the spirit stones in her hand.
“This place is really much better than Fenghua City,” Seeing the little girl leave almost unimpeded, Zuo Wuyi couldn’t help but sigh.
“Indeed, the city lord is very bold and principled,” Mo Xiao said. “If she were the city lord of Fenghua City, things like the Star Stone would definitely not appear. In that case, we wouldn’t have to sneak into their warehouse to deal with it.”
Zuo Wuyi’s lips twitched. “It’s a pity that there aren’t that many good city lords.”
Zuo Wuyi did not specifically explain the matter of the black eggs, so Mo Xiao did not deliberately ask. The two of them continued to walk hand in hand, following their feelings. After about half an hour, they turned back to meet up with the others.
“Senior Sister!” When Mo Xiao arrived at the meeting point, Yun He burst into tears and was about to pounce on her.
Mo Xiao subconsciously took a step to the side, causing Yun He to miss.
“What’s wrong with you?” Mo Xiao asked.
“Wuwu, Senior Sister, can you tell me how many spirit stones you have now?” Yun He said, sniffling pitifully.
Mo Xiao raised an eyebrow. “Why do you want to know that? I definitely have more than you.”
“I just want to know. I don’t believe I’m really a poor ghost!” Yun He then looked at Zuo Wuyi. “What about you, Little Junior Sister? You’ve only been in the sect for a few years, so you shouldn’t have many savings, right?”
Zuo Wuyi blinked. “Not much. If I convert them all to high-grade spirit stones, it’s probably about five thousand high-grade spirit stones?”
“What?” Yun He’s eyes widened. “Little Junior Sister, why do you have so many high-grade spirit stones?”
“I don’t know either. I just saved up the spirit stones Master and Senior Sister gave me and haven’t used them much,” Zuo Wuyi was telling the truth. She had never left the sect, so she basically had no expenses.
“Yun He, I told you, even Little Junior Sister has more savings than you, let alone Yunmu,” Yun Yu said with a smile. “She broke through to the Golden Core stage earlier than you, so the monthly allowance she has received is more than yours.”
Yun He didn’t want to speak. She could accept that she couldn’t compare to her Senior Sister Yunmu, but how could she not even have as much savings as her Little Junior Sister? Was she really a money-scattering child? Stupid and easy to deceive?
