46: Cake
Making a cake was simple in Mo Xiao’s eyes. After buying the ingredients, there was no need to go back to the inn. She just found an empty space and put a barrier around the two of them.
Zuo Wuyi sat cross-legged on a cushion Mo Xiao had taken out. In front of her was a small, low table, one meter long and one meter wide. On her side were some sweet pastries she had bought along the way.
Mo Xiao sat cross-legged opposite Zuo Wuyi, with the newly bought ingredients and some utensils in front of her.
Flour, milk, sugar, and eggs, plus Mo Xiao’s not-so-skilled fire spell, and a barely heart-shaped cake base was freshly baked.
Egg whites and sugar, and a large bowl of cream was also whipped up with Mo Xiao’s effort, and then evenly spread on the cake base.
Looking at the extremely simple cake, Mo Xiao took out a jade box from her space. After opening it, she took out the spirit fruits stored inside and placed them on top as decoration.
“Here,” Mo Xiao carefully placed the cake on the plate in front of Zuo Wuyi.
Zuo Wuyi blinked, propped her chin on one hand, and tilted her head to look at Mo Xiao. “That’s it?”
Mo Xiao thought for a moment. “Should I go and buy a candle to light?”
“…” The corner of Zuo Wuyi’s mouth couldn’t help but twitch. It wasn’t her birthday today. What was the point of buying a candle? “I mean, there are no utensils.”
“Ah… I seem to have forgotten to buy them,” Mo Xiao frowned and was about to leave the barrier. “I’ll go and buy them. I’ll be back soon.”
“No need. Sit down,” Zuo Wuyi said, moving to the side and making half a space for Mo Xiao.
Mo Xiao paused for a moment, then lifted her robe and sat cross-legged to Zuo Wuyi’s right.
“If there are no utensils, you can just feed me,” Zuo Wuyi adjusted her posture and leaned against Mo Xiao’s shoulder.
How to feed her without utensils? Mo Xiao looked at the cake on the plate with some difficulty. After a moment of hesitation, she picked up the entire plate and placed it in front of Zuo Wuyi.
“My mouth… is probably not that big,” Zuo Wuyi said, glancing at Mo Xiao’s empty hand, hinting at how she should feed her.
My hand? The expression on Mo Xiao’s face became a little strange. She looked at Zuo Wuyi with some uncertainty and also raised her hand to gesture.
“That’s it. Feed me,” Zuo Wuyi confirmed Mo Xiao’s guess.
Mo Xiao looked at her hand, then at the cake she was holding. After a brief internal struggle, she directly placed the plate on the table, then took out a clean handkerchief and frantically wiped her hand. Finally, not feeling at ease, she cast several cleansing spells on her hand.
Zuo Wuyi was very patient. She just watched Mo Xiao fiddle, and after washing her hands, she took out a short knife and repeated the process.
She watched as Mo Xiao cut the cake with a solemn expression, then carefully picked up a piece with her hand and brought it to her mouth.
Zuo Wuyi opened her mouth and took the entire piece of cake in one bite, and also bit Mo Xiao’s finger, not letting go.
Mo Xiao frowned slightly. She had been very serious when spreading the cream, and every corner had been covered with a thick layer. This caused her fingertips to be almost completely covered in cream when she picked it up.
And now, Zuo Wuyi had eaten the entire piece of cake in one bite, which was tantamount to putting her fingertips in her mouth. She could even feel Zuo Wuyi’s tongue, touching her fingertips from time to time.
“It’s dirty. Let go,” Mo Xiao’s brow furrowed. She felt that this development was not right.
Zuo Wuyi hummed and playfully bit Mo Xiao’s hand. Hearing her gasp, she quickly let go.
“I just wanted to talk, I didn’t have any other meaning,” Zuo Wuyi immediately absolved herself of all responsibility.
Mo Xiao frowned at her unusually clean hand. To wash or not to wash, that was the question. She was in a difficult position.
“Do you want more?” In the end, Mo Xiao reluctantly accepted it, trying her best to suppress the strange thoughts that were popping up in her mind.
“Yes, I want to finish it!” Zuo Wuyi said. She didn’t need to maintain her figure now. She had to eat every last bit of the cake Mo Xiao had made for her.
And so, it took Mo Xiao an hour to make the cake and feed it to Zuo Wuyi.
Of course, feeding the cake was much more difficult than making it. Mo Xiao spent twice as much time on it as she did on making the cake.
After eating the cake, Zuo Wuyi’s happiness level was basically at its peak. She let Mo Xiao hold her hand, and even when they were just wandering aimlessly on the street, the smile on her face did not fade.
Until…
“Martial Uncle Xuan Min,” Mo Xiao stopped and greeted him in a normal tone.
Xuan Min ignored Mo Xiao. His gaze first fell on Zuo Wuyi’s face, then slid down to their intertwined hands.
“In a good mood?” Xuan Min said this while looking at Zuo Wuyi.
Thinking of her master’s instructions, Zuo Wuyi did not turn hostile directly, but maintained the expression on her face. “It’s alright.”
“Aren’t you your senior sister’s good disciple?” Xuan Min chuckled lightly. “Why don’t you think about helping her solve her troubles?”
“If there’s something that even troubles Master, I probably can’t do anything about it either,” Zuo Wuyi did not take Xuan Min’s bait. “All I can do is be Master’s obedient disciple, listen to her, and not get into conflicts with irrelevant people.”
Clearly, the “irrelevant people” in Zuo Wuyi’s words referred to Xuan Min in front of her.
Xuan Min’s eyelids twitched, then he laughed again. “Since you think so, then I won’t say any more. I hope you won’t regret it.”
After speaking, Xuan Min walked straight ahead, almost brushing past Zuo Wuyi’s shoulder as he left.
Zuo Wuyi did not make any move to turn back, but directly pulled Mo Xiao and walked in the opposite direction of where Xuan Min had left, as if nothing had happened just now.
“Such a low-level tactic. It’s clear that he just wants me to overthink things and eventually go to him,” After walking some distance, Zuo Wuyi couldn’t help but start to complain.
“Does Xuan Min really think I’m a big idiot? Even if something is really wrong with Master, wouldn’t I go and ask Master herself? Why would I go around in circles to ask him and get some information that I don’t know is true or false?”
Clearly, the meeting with Xuan Min had greatly lowered Zuo Wuyi’s happiness level, almost cutting it in half.
Mo Xiao casually took out the small cookies she had made along the way and brought them to Zuo Wuyi’s mouth.
Zuo Wuyi looked down, then took a bite, wanting to repeat her old trick. Unfortunately, this time Mo Xiao’s movements were very fast. The moment Zuo Wuyi opened her mouth to bite, she quickly withdrew her fingers.
“Since you’ve seen through it, then you don’t have to pay attention to Xuan Min’s words,” Mo Xiao said. “If you’re worried, should we go back and ask Master today?”
Zuo Wuyi puffed out her cheeks. The sweet cookies had soothed her emotions well.
“Mhm, anyway, Eldest Senior Sister is also living with Master. If there’s any problem with Master, Eldest Senior Sister will definitely know,” Zuo Wuyi said. Because her mouth was full of cookies, her words were a little unclear.
Seeing this, Mo Xiao picked up a water pouch made of demonic beast skin, brought it to Zuo Wuyi’s mouth, and tilted it slightly upwards to make it easier for her to drink.
After eating and drinking her fill, Zuo Wuyi’s mood had almost recovered, and the unhappy expression on her face had completely disappeared.
Taking advantage of the fact that there was no one around, she turned her head and gave Mo Xiao a kiss.
Mo Xiao was as calm as ever. It was just a kiss in public. First time shy, second time familiar. Apart from a slight curve at the corner of her mouth, she had no other reaction.
It was nothing, just a habit.
Only after the sky grew dark did Mo Xiao bring Zuo Wuyi back. In order to soothe her fluctuating emotions, Mo Xiao directly bought a whole bamboo basket of candies and desserts.
After returning to the inn where they were temporarily staying, Mo Xiao and Zuo Wuyi walked to the door of their master’s room and raised their hands to knock.
“Master, do you want to take a bath together?” Just as Mo Xiao’s hand was about to knock, a soft voice came from the room, making her pause.
Normally, Mo Xiao shouldn’t have been able to hear this sentence. After all, her divine sense was not covering her master’s room.
But now that she had heard it, there was only one possibility: Yun Yu’s voice was not soft, and they had not set up a soundproof barrier!
The voice that Mo Xiao could hear, Zuo Wuyi could also hear.
But Zuo Wuyi had not witnessed the scene of Yun Yu’s showdown with Xuan Shuang, so she was just a little surprised and did not think of other things like Mo Xiao.
Zuo Wuyi poked Mo Xiao’s shoulder and asked with her eyes if they should leave first and find another chance to come back tomorrow.
Mo Xiao nodded. It was clearly not a good opportunity now. Who knew what Master and Eldest Senior Sister were doing inside?
Just as Zuo Wuyi and Mo Xiao were leaving quietly, Xuan Shuang and Yun Yu in the room were looking at each other awkwardly but politely.
The atmosphere in the room was not as ambiguous as Mo Xiao had thought. Instead, Yun Yu’s face was mostly apologetic. “Master, this was a small mistake of mine. I didn’t expect this to crack after being heated…”
Since she had successfully shared a bed with Xuan Shuang, Yun Yu had been very careful, mostly secretly happy in her heart and rarely showing it on the outside.
Today, Yun Yu had casually asked Xuan Shuang if she wanted to eat something and had unexpectedly received an affirmative answer. Yun Yu thought of the scene of her junior sister feeding her little junior sister, and suddenly felt confident, so she went to cook herself.
And then… and then some accidents happened. Yun Yu’s meal was made under the guidance of a master chef and took a long time. By the time she brought it up, it was already cold.
Without thinking, Yun Yu directly heated it with a spell, but in the end, she cracked the clay pot for the soup, and the soup inside spilled on both of their clothes.
Xuan Shuang looked at the light yellow stain on her clothes. “I’ll go and change.”
“Aren’t you going to wash it?” Yun Yu asked subconsciously. Although a cleansing spell could solve it, it didn’t feel as clean as taking a bath.
Xuan Shuang didn’t speak, but gave Yun Yu a meaningful look, then turned and went to the inner room to change her clothes.
Yun Yu rubbed her nose. She had really just asked if they wanted to take a bath together out of habit. She swore to the heavens that she definitely had no bad intentions!
