7. The Truth
“You are not Miss Mo.” Even if Scholar Liu didn’t recognize her, the scholar’s wife recognized Mo Xiao.
Meeting Scholar Liu’s suspicious gaze, Yun He remained perfectly calm. “Madam, may I ask what business you have with my senior sister?”
The scholar’s wife clutched her sleeves. “Miss Mo is your senior sister, so are you the same kind of person as Miss Mo?”
“I suppose so. Madam, if you have no other business, I’ll be leaving now.” As Yun He spoke, she glanced at Scholar Liu. What on earth are these two planning?
“Please stay, Miss. I would first like to ask for your help with something…” The scholar’s wife lowered her head. “Could you please bestow upon me… a miraculous medicine that can cure my body?”
“If you want to cure an illness, shouldn’t you see a doctor?” Before Yun He could say anything, Zuo Wuyi, who had been shielded behind her, stepped forward. “If it’s because you have no money for treatment, Big Sister, I can lend you some silver.”
The scholar’s wife was stunned by this. She subconsciously looked at Scholar Liu, as if asking him what to do.
“What a joke, little miss. Although I am poor, if my wife is ill and needs treatment, I would certainly bankrupt my family to cure her.” Scholar Liu’s expression stiffened for a moment before he quickly masked it, directly taking his wife’s hand. “Wife, rest assured, not only will I hire a doctor to treat you, but I will also find the person who poisoned you.”
“Husband, your words are enough for me…” The scholar’s wife’s eyes quickly reddened. “I don’t want to be a burden to you…”
“Stop. Are you two putting on a show for me?” Zuo Wuyi interrupted their performance with a deadpan expression. “If I’m not mistaken, you’re trying to get some benefit from my senior sister and me, aren’t you?”
“Little miss, what nonsense are you spouting?” Scholar Liu looked at Zuo Wuyi with some displeasure. “If it weren’t for my wife insisting that Miss Mo is a warm-hearted person, I wouldn’t have troubled the two of you to come here.”
“Since you two believe my wife and I are such petty people, then please leave immediately. Do not delay me in hiring a doctor to save my wife,” Scholar Liu said. “The door is over there. I won’t see you out.”
Yun He was a bit bewildered by their sudden change in attitude. “So, you wanted the healing elixirs we carry?”
“I originally thought you two would lend a helping hand, but I never expected you to be this kind of people,” Scholar Liu said with a nonchalant expression. “All that talk about cultivators helping ordinary people must be a lie, right? You’re just a bunch of selfish ghosts.”
“What do you mean by that?” Yun He was displeased by his words. If it weren’t for the rule that cultivators could not actively attack ordinary people, Yun He would have wanted to raise her hand.
Zuo Wuyi pulled on Yun He’s sleeve and shook her head, then looked at Scholar Liu. “You mean, as long as I give you an elixir, we won’t be selfish cultivators?”
“Naturally. If you two are willing to help, I will certainly be grateful.” Since his purpose was already exposed, there was no need for him to pretend anymore.
If it weren’t for that Miss Mo’s strangely unpredictable actions, which didn’t follow his plan, he wouldn’t have had to fall out with these cultivators over some elixirs. After all, the few times he had encountered cultivators before, all it took was for his wife to shed a few tears and cry a little, and they would give her some rare trinkets to help her.
“Little Junior Sister, there’s no need to bother with people like them.” A few low-grade elixirs were nothing to Yun He, but she was disgusted by Scholar Liu and had no intention of letting him take advantage of them.
Zuo Wuyi was not as angry as Yun He. Instead, a slight smile appeared on her face. “Is that so? I have an elixir here that can help a person reach Foundation Establishment. Do you want it?”
“An elixir that lets someone reach Foundation Establishment? Is that effective for ordinary people too?” A flash of joy appeared in Scholar Liu’s eyes. These cultivators really are stupid and rich, to be able to give away such an elixir so casually!
“It might be somewhat less effective, but it should be able to let someone break through to the mid-stage of Qi Refinement.” As Zuo Wuyi spoke, she took an elixir from her storage space and tossed it over.
Scholar Liu excitedly held the Foundation Establishment Pill. Such a good thing—he had no desire to exchange it for money. If he used it himself, could he become one of those high and mighty cultivators? Then he would no longer have to live by scheming and cheating.
“By the way, if you don’t use it, the elixir’s medicinal properties will gradually diminish. I’m not sure if it will still be effective then,” Zuo Wuyi added as she was leaving.
After leaving Scholar Liu’s house, Yun He couldn’t help but ask, “Little Junior Sister, what kind of elixir did you give them?”
“It’s an elixir that can raise one’s cultivation,” Zuo Wuyi answered honestly.
“But, for a mortal, they shouldn’t be able to withstand…” Before Yun He could finish, she heard a scream from the small courtyard behind them, followed by a woman’s weeping.
“So what? I just helped him according to his needs. The rest has nothing to do with me.” Zuo Wuyi still had a smile on her face as she spoke. “Senior Sister, do you think I did something wrong?”
Yun He frowned. “Little Junior Sister, they are just mortals, after all…”
“But, they are very bold, aren’t they?” Zuo Wuyi chuckled lightly. “Senior Sister, my father taught me a simple principle when I was very young. When a person does anything, they must fully consider the consequences. If the consequences are something you cannot bear, then you shouldn’t do it.”
Mo Xiao had actually returned not long after the two had left. When she sensed the commotion next door and came out, the last thing she heard was Zuo Wuyi’s final sentence.
A sentence that was incredibly familiar to her.
[Host, Mo Xiao seems to be looking at you.] The system, which had just come out of sleep mode, popped up and spoke weakly.
Hearing the system’s words, the smile on Zuo Wuyi’s face began to freeze. She slowly turned her head and squeezed out a smile for Mo Xiao.
“Senior Sister, Scholar Liu ate the elixir I gave him, and it seems something has happened,” Yun He said first, taking the blame upon herself.
Mo Xiao pushed the wooden main gate further open. “That’s no reason for you two to stand here in a daze.”
“Huh?” Yun He blinked. What does Senior Sister mean by that?
“Hurry up and go cultivate,” Mo Xiao continued.
“Oh, oh, right! I’ll take Little Junior Sister to cultivate right away!” Yun He quickly reacted. Senior Sister’s reaction means she’s not going to pursue the matter!
Zuo Wuyi was still worried that her last sentence would trigger Mo Xiao’s memories, so she didn’t say a word, letting Yun He pull her back into the cultivation room.
Mo Xiao gave Zuo Wuyi a thoughtful look, then walked straight into Scholar Liu’s house.
Scholar Liu lay on the ground in agony, most of the meridians in his body severed by the rampaging spiritual energy. The blood that flowed out had stained his scholar’s robes red.
“Mo Xiao, no, Immortal, Immortal, save my husband!” When the scholar’s wife saw Mo Xiao arrive, she immediately knelt on the ground and kowtowed repeatedly.
Mo Xiao looked down, a little puzzled as she saw the scholar’s wife’s already bleeding forehead. “He wanted to poison you. Why do you want to save him?”
The scholar’s wife knelt on the ground. “Immortal, my husband just went astray for a moment. As long as he gets enough silver, he will stop.”
This sentence made Mo Xiao feel a little baffled. “Silver? How are you going to get silver?”
Looking at her husband, who was now breathing more out than in, the scholar’s wife told her everything. It turned out that the couple had known she was an outsider cultivator when Mo Xiao moved in next door, and they had targeted her from the very beginning.
“Originally, originally my husband wanted me to use the poison in my body to ask for some immortal medicine from you, Immortal, and then sell it…” the scholar’s wife said between sobs. “But the moment you came, Immortal, you said my husband was the culprit and wanted me to report him to the officials…”
Mo Xiao was at a loss for whether to laugh or cry. “When did he tell you these things?”
“When you moved in next door, Immortal,” the scholar’s wife said.
“But you’ve had the poison in your body for three months. Isn’t that still your husband trying to harm you?” Mo Xiao’s curiosity was piqued. Is human desire so complex and contradictory?
The scholar’s wife’s voice grew even smaller. She knew she had been poisoned, but her husband had always told her it was fine, so she hadn’t paid it any mind…
After hearing the scholar’s wife’s words, Mo Xiao finally understood. This couple had been swindlers from the very beginning, using the compassion of cultivators to cheat them out of their possessions.
“Since I cannot bear a child for my husband, I must at least do something else for him…” the scholar’s wife murmured.
Mo Xiao looked at the scholar’s wife without speaking. It seemed that no matter where one was, humans were a species driven by greed. No wonder Master wanted her to enter the world to cultivate. She would never see such things in the sect.
“I just checked. There’s something wrong with your husband’s body. He can’t have children.” Thinking of the sect’s rules, Mo Xiao did not intervene, merely standing there and looking at the scholar’s wife coldly. “And besides, he’s already dead.”
The scholar’s wife froze in place, bewildered by both pieces of news.
Mo Xiao tossed a bag of silver in front of the scholar’s wife. “Your husband stole my elixir and died after consuming it without permission. Remember this sentence, and these one hundred taels are yours.”
The scholar’s wife glanced at her dead husband, then shifted her gaze to the silver in front of her. After a long struggle, she still reached out her hand.
Seeing this, Mo Xiao let out a soft laugh. Love and affection really aren’t reliable things. In the end, they can’t compete with the benefits laid out before one’s eyes.
Of course, Zuo Wuyi is an exception.
Zuo Wuyi. Mo Xiao silently repeated these three words in her mind.
That familiar name, plus that familiar saying… is she really the female lead?
