No matter how much Auntie Wen asked or comforted her, Ming Li insisted she wasn’t bothered. She didn’t mind these things at all.
Seeing this, Auntie Wen stopped asking. Her tone turned heavy. “It’s good that you can look at it that way.”
“Is there any other way to look at it?” Ming Li said with a nonchalant smile. “It’s not a big deal.”
Someone else came over to chat with Auntie Wen, and Ming Li finally found some peace.
Her phone, lying face down on the table, vibrated. Ming Li flipped it over to find a message from Assistant Qi.
Assistant Qi was one of Gu Xueqiang’s assistants. After Assistant Lin had followed Gu Xueqiang to handle the acquisition project for “Xingwan,” Assistant Qi had taken over his duties. Gu Xueqiang usually communicated work-related matters through Assistant Qi.
Assistant Qi: [Miss Ming, President Gu is already aware of the events at Young Miss Shen’s wedding. She wishes for you to remain at the scene and return home with Miss Gu. President Gu will speak to Miss Gu on her end.]*
Ming Li almost laughed after reading it. She thought self-mockingly: Does this mean I’ve finally graduated?
From initially failing to understand Gu Xueqiang’s hidden meanings to now being able to predict her actions—wasn’t this a form of growth?
Fortunately, she had come back.
Ming Li was never one to act out of spite. While Zhu Hanxing might have impulsive moments, Ming Li’s impulsiveness was mostly reserved for her friends. When it came to her own affairs, she had always been exceptionally patient.
Ming Li sent a standard “Received” reply to Assistant Qi and continued to watch Shen Chu and Zhongli Shu on stage.
It was time for the brides to exchange rings and kiss, but Ming Li felt a gaze fixed upon her.
Even if the people in this hall were curious about Gu Qingshuang and her, they would at most steal glances or gossip behind her back. Those with truly loose lips would head to the restroom to dish out the drama.
But they wouldn’t stare so impolitely.
That was one of the reasons Ming Li dared to return.
No one would bring this up in the open. As long as she could act and put on a facade, everyone would forget about it before long.
By leaving with Gu Qingshuang at the end, people would even sugarcoat Gu Qingshuang’s earlier behavior.
It wouldn’t be “unable to forget an ex-girlfriend” or “rekindling old flames.” It would just be “being a good person.”
Of course, such excuses only fooled idiots.
But she would fool whoever she could.
Ming Li often felt that if a lie was told often enough, it started to feel real. Just like her—after telling Auntie Wen once, she was already beginning to internalize the logic.
Gu Qingshuang isn’t that kind of person. She’s just sentimental about the past.
Ming Li forced herself not to look back at the person staring, thinking they would eventually find her boring and stop.
She was just an ordinary person—two eyes, one mouth. It wasn’t like she looked like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.
However, the gaze became increasingly intense. Ming Li frowned slightly and turned her head to look back.
She saw Luo Chaoxue.
Luo Chaoxue. It was a very beautiful name.
The girl had introduced herself twice.
Actually, Ming Li had remembered her name from the dessert shop, but her memory of the face wasn’t as sharp.
It wasn’t that she wasn’t beautiful; it was just that her aura was so gentle—like a spring breeze—that it didn’t leave a deep impression.
In contrast, the girl beside her, who was like a powder keg ready to explode, was much more memorable.
Back in the sky garden, after Luo Chaoxue had introduced herself, Ming Li had only asked about the origin of her name. “Does it mean ‘black hair in the morning, snow by evening’?”
Luo Chaoxue had nodded. “Yes.”
Ming Li took a breath to steady her emotions. “I like that poem very much.”
“Is that the line you like?” Luo Chaoxue had asked.
Ming Li shook her head.
Luo Chaoxue then said, “Actually, I prefer the line: ‘Rich food and music are not worth prizing; I only wish to be forever drunk and never sober up.'”
It was Li Bai’s Invitation to Wine. Every line was a masterpiece.
“A fine horse and a thousand-gold fur coat—call the boy to take them and trade them for wine, and with you, I will dissolve the sorrow of ten thousand ages,” Ming Li had recited softly. “I like that line.”
What Ming Li didn’t say was that when she first read the poem in high school, her favorite line was “When success comes, one must enjoy it to the full; let not the golden goblet face the moon in vain.”
For some reason, now only that last line came to mind. Even reading the words “sorrow of ten thousand ages” gave her the urge to cry.
The two had stood on the roof in the cold wind discussing Li Bai for two minutes. Then, when Ming Li felt her emotions were about to collapse, she made an excuse to leave.
Now that she had composed herself, she met Luo Chaoxue’s gaze and gave a calm nod and a distant smile as a greeting.
The wedding was being completed perfectly—if one ignored the dance before the brides’ entrance.
Specifically, the second half of that dance and the ensuing farce.
Ming Li guessed Shen Lideng’s injury wasn’t too severe; otherwise, Shen Chu wouldn’t have appeared so quickly to proceed with the wedding on time.
After the incident with Ming Xi and Shen Chang, Ming Li had looked into the Shen family’s affairs.
Although Shen Chu and Shen Chang were full siblings, Shen Chu was closer to Shen Lideng. Shen Lideng had expressed her gratitude toward her older sister, Shen Chu, in multiple interviews.
But tonight’s performance…
Ming Li didn’t understand.
At first, she thought Shen Lideng simply wanted to congratulate Shen Chu. But when she saw that glass stage, she had a nagging feeling something would happen. Was Shen Lideng too arrogant to think she’d get hurt, or was it intentional?
But… would a dancer really use something like that to sabotage someone else’s wedding?
Besides, it didn’t really sabotage anything. At most, it delayed the wedding a bit or made Shen Chu feel a fragment of guilt.
