“Bullshit!” Chang Fengying snarled. “You didn’t break up with that bitch because of me! You were the one who chose profit over love! You married me so you could—”
“Have you forgotten how you hired people to terrorize A-Ran? How you had her suspended in the air?” Shen Guoxing exhaled a cloud of smoke. “A-Ran is dead. But I haven’t forgotten. Chang Fengying, drop the ‘Young Miss’ act. If you don’t want to die early, shut your mouth.”
Chang Fengying felt a chill run down her spine. She had assumed Shen Guoxing never knew about those things.
In her youth, she had been arrogant and impulsive. She had wanted Shen Guoxing’s handsome face and used her family’s power to force A-Ran to leave him.
She hadn’t expected A-Ran to reunite with him later in secret and bear his child.
Chang Fengying had been kept in the dark for years. It wasn’t until A-Ran passed away and the illegitimate daughter showed up at their door that she finally found out.
Back then, her parents were still alive. Shen Guoxing didn’t dare cross her father, so he didn’t bring Shen Lideng into the house. He left the girl kneeling at the villa gates in the middle of a blizzard, clutching A-Ran’s ashes.
The snow had fallen for two days, piling up to a man’s knees.
Ironically, her father had died from the stress shortly after, and her mother had fallen gravely ill. After the funeral, her mother had moved into a temple to live as a recluse.
Chang Fengying remembered her mother holding her hand on the day she left. “Zhuzhu, you’ve been spoiled since you were a child. You’ve always gotten what you wanted. You chose Shen Guoxing yourself, so you must walk this path yourself. I can no longer guide you. Walk slowly.”
As the memories resurfaced, Chang Fengying trembled. “So you knew all along?”
“A-Ran and I saw each other later,” Shen Guoxing said with a low chuckle. “We had a long, happy time together in Lucheng.”
“So when you said you were on business trips to Lucheng, you were actually trysting with that bitch?”
“She wasn’t a bitch. You are, Chang Fengying!”
“…”
Chang Fengying raised her hand to slap him, but he caught her wrist in mid-air.
She gritted her teeth. “So you and your daughter are trying to get revenge on me? This whole stunt at Chu’er’s wedding… it was all for revenge, wasn’t it?”
“You think too highly of yourself.” Shen Guoxing flung her hand away and meticulously stubbed out his cigarette. “I am simply helping Lideng take back what belongs to her.”
At the same time, he was reminding Shen Lideng of her place.
Today was Shen Chu and Zhongli Shu’s wedding. The dark, unseemly thoughts Lideng harbored should be kept in check.
Shen Guoxing would never allow such a thing to happen.
There was no need to explain these nuances to Chang Fengying; if he did, she would likely go and try to kill Shen Lideng.
Shen Guoxing’s tone was indifferent, but Chang Fengying let out a hysterical laugh. “Take back what belongs to her? What is it? Gu Qingshuang? Or the Gu Group behind her?! Hahaha! Shen Guoxing, you are truly wicked! You turned my Wu family into your Shen family, and now you want to swallow the Gu Group too! You’ve planned this all out! Do you really think Gu Xueqiang is as easy to handle as I am?”
Shen Guoxing glanced at her and snorted.
Gu Xueqiang was certainly not as foolish as Chang Fengying.
Years ago, Gu Xueqiang had made it clear that if Shen Lideng married Gu Qingshuang, she would be expected to be a full-time housewife. There would be a prenuptial agreement, and Lideng would never be allowed to touch the Gu family business. It didn’t feel like they were marrying a spouse; it felt like they were caging a bird.
Shen Guoxing had figured that by leaving the Gu family and joining the Paris Opera House, Lideng could build a reputation and find someone else.
However, he had eventually discovered Shen Lideng’s deep-seated secret—the rebellious girl was actually in love with Shen Chu.
Shen Guoxing realized the gravity of the situation. Looking across Jingan, the Gu family currently held the most power in the business world. Everyone relied on them, including him.
Recently, he had learned that Gu Xueqiang had handed the Xingwan acquisition to Ming Li. This was a signal—Gu Xueqiang intended for Ming Li to enter the Gu Group as a groomed successor.
But that position should have belonged to Shen Lideng.
What belonged to Shen Lideng belonged to him.
When Shen Chang caused trouble at school, Shen Guoxing used it as an opportunity to test Gu Qingshuang’s attitude.
With the debt from “that incident” hanging over her, Gu Qingshuang wouldn’t be able to refuse.
Yet, even when he threatened the new project Gu Xueqiang valued most, the old woman hadn’t forced Ming Li to kneel and apologize to his son.
Instead, Gu Qingshuang had acted out of character, pressuring Shen Chu to the point where they almost turned against each other.
Shen Guoxing decided the bait wasn’t strong enough. Gu Qingshuang was a fish still struggling on the cutting board.
Thus, tonight’s performance.
It was a play directed by Shen Guoxing to pressure Shen Lideng, and he was satisfied with the results.
His only annoyance was Chang Fengying. She talked too much, she tried to interfere, and she dared to call his A-Ran a bitch.
Shen Guoxing looked at his wife.
Chang Fengying shivered. For some reason, she saw murderous intent in his eyes.
She didn’t doubt for a second that if she said one more word, this madman would actually kill her.
“If you’re tired, go upstairs and sleep,” Shen Guoxing said, standing up. “I’m going to the hospital to check on Lideng.”
Shen Chu led Zhongli Shu from the villa’s courtyard to their own home. Their house was decorated with festive wedding ornaments, but Zhongli Shu remained silent the whole way.
Once inside, Zhongli Shu collapsed onto the sofa. A loud crack echoed as she sat on something. She reached under herself and pulled out two walnuts.
She cracked them open and ate the kernels, her tone lazy. “That was quite a show today, Miss Shen. Was it your doing?”
“No.” Shen Chu sank down beside her and stole a piece of walnut. “I didn’t know any of it was happening.”
“And you’re not going to see your sister?” Zhongli Shu looked at her playfully.
Shen Chu shook her head. Seeing the teasing look in the other woman’s eyes, she reached out and hooked her finger under Zhongli Shu’s chin. “Tonight is our wedding night.”
“But she’s injured,” Zhongli Shu pointed out. “If it were my sister, you wouldn’t be seeing me tonight.”
“So heartless?” Shen Chu looked hurt.
“Well? You know how much Little Shi likes to act spoiled.” Zhongli Shu tsked. “Your sister is a tough nut to crack.”
Shen Chu frowned slightly, unhappy with the assessment, but found it accurate nonetheless. “True.”
“Who arranged it?” Zhongli Shu leaned her head on Shen Chu’s shoulder. “Shen Chu, tell me the truth.”
“My father,” Shen Chu paused. “And Lideng probably had a hand in it too.”
“To set a trap for Gu Qingshuang?” Zhongli Shu didn’t intend to take over her family’s business—she wasn’t interested, and her parents were still young anyway. They could groom Zhongli Shi in a few years. But she still understood the social dynamics of their circle perfectly.
She and Shen Chu had been in the same class since middle school. Although they hadn’t liked each other back then, they knew everything about each other’s families.
