Witch’s Night: Chapter 58 “Requiem”
The tall shadow almost blocked out the sun, and the passing clergy cast curious glances, their eyes shifting back and forth between the exposed Luo Yan and the tall figure.
But they quickly realized something, immediately turned their heads, and hurried away.
“Nice to meet you, my name is Guinevere.”
A suit of thick knight’s armor clanged in front of Luo Yan. She looked up and saw a gray-haired girl with a high ponytail peeking out from the helmet.
Calling her a girl… but she was probably around 1.8 meters tall. With the armor, she was probably about the same height as Qin Wen.
However, her delicate face still retained a youthful air, her beautiful emerald green eyes carrying a sharp glint, and the greatsword hanging at her waist gleamed in the sunlight.
This was a righteous knight. Anyone who saw Guinevere for the first time would have this thought.
But Luo Yan stared at Guinevere for a moment, touched her chin, and said,
“Saint Illusion?”
Knowing her, being able to break through the “Envy” distortion field, and this subtle feeling…
It reminded her of that Saint who liked to use different personas.
“I am not a Saint, I am Guinevere.”
Guinevere replied seriously.
“Oh, it must be her then.” Anna slapped her forehead, a helpless expression on her face. “These are definitely the kind of things Elise… oh no, Saint Illusion would say.”
“I am one of the Knight-Captains of the Holy Knights, holding the same position as Crete, the Knight-Captain who brought you from Yan City.”
Guinevere turned to look at Anna, her firm gaze making it hard to doubt her words. “As for the Elise you mentioned, as far as I know, she also belongs to the Holy Knights, holding the same rank as Knight-Captain within the Battle Sisters division.
“Let me reiterate, we are not Saints.”
“Saint Illusion… ahem, forget it, Guinevere, are we going in now?”
Luo Yan originally wanted to say, since we’ve all recognized you, why bother continuing to argue, Saint Illusion, you even slipped up and mentioned your previous persona.
But after a moment of thought, given this Fourth Saint’s stubbornness, she would probably argue for a whole day and night without admitting that she was “Saint Illusion,” so Luo Yan ultimately gave up on this idea.
Guinevere nodded slightly. “I am here under Saint Shadow’s orders, to escort you to Holy Communion.”
They were silent for a moment. Anna looked at the church gate a few steps away, then at Guinevere, who was still serious, and suppressed the urge to retort.
Saint Illusion, could the excuse you came up with be any worse? Calling this short distance “escorting”? If it were truly escorting, it should at least start from the residence…
That way, they wouldn’t have experienced that inexplicable car accident…
“Mm, let’s go.”
Luo Yan nodded and was about to walk towards the church gate.
But at this moment, she saw that Guinevere remained motionless, her emerald green eyes fixed on her.
“What’s wrong?”
Luo Yan was stunned and asked.
“Don’t you need to disguise yourself again?”
Guinevere drew her greatsword and held it horizontally in front of Luo Yan. Luo Yan’s current appearance was reflected on the polished blade. “Apologies, I used my ability to find you just now.”
Reflected on the blade was Luo Yan’s true, stunningly beautiful face. The black, men’s top hat couldn’t conceal her floor-length hair, and a few silver strands fell from her forehead.
The black-haired young man was gone; the current Luo Yan could be seen at a glance to be a woman disguised as a man.
But what Luo Yan didn’t expect was that Guinevere’s ability not only broke through her “Envy” distortion field, but also dispelled her disguise.
Luo Yan stared at the blade for a moment, then looked up at Guinevere.
Seemingly a bit embarrassed, Guinevere slightly averted her gaze and said,
“I used my unwavering sense of justice and iron-clad, unyielding will to break through your mental field, so I lost control a bit, apologies.”
Forcibly breaking through using spiritual power…
“…No need to explain, I understand.” Luo Yan nodded. “That works too, it’s fine.”
She had originally used the disguise because she was worried about being too conspicuous, an extra layer of insurance.
But now it seemed that the clergy around them seemed to have recognized Guinevere’s true identity. Upon seeing her, they immediately detoured and left.
Luo Yan even saw two clergy passing by, chatting and laughing, but after glancing at Guinevere, they immediately lowered their heads and hurried into the church, not daring to linger even for a moment.
“Saint Illusion’s reputation within the Noah Church is actually this bad… why didn’t I notice before?” Luo Yan thought to herself.
Of course, Luo Yan didn’t say anything on the surface and turned to walk towards the church gate.
Cecilia immediately followed behind her, timidly glancing at Guinevere once, then not daring to look again.
Anna, on the other hand, couldn’t help but observe Guinevere more, after all, she had been good friends with Saint Illusion’s previous persona.
Although Anna had been in a daze for several days after learning Illusion’s true identity.
But Guinevere still acted like she didn’t know Anna. After sheathing her greatsword, she gestured for Anna to go first; she would follow behind.
At this point, Anna could only suppress her doubts, turned around, and followed Luo Yan.
At the same time, a faint darkness slowly emerged behind Guinevere.
“Did they discover me?” Shadow, peering through Guinevere’s shadow, asked nervously. “That’s not right, even Illusion has difficulty seeing through this…”
Guinevere didn’t speak, as if she hadn’t heard Shadow’s muttering.
“But this is troublesome, Illusion refuses to let me contact Miss Luo Yan, I always feel there’s something strange about this… Guinevere? Why aren’t you saying anything?”
“I’m wondering why they mistook me and Elise for Saint Illusion?” Guinevere frowned. “Could it be that Saint Illusion used us as prototypes for her phantoms?”
“Ahem… Illusion wouldn’t be that creepy, the people she creates are all her original designs.”
Shadow coughed awkwardly. Actually, she had only used their names. “Anyway, let’s follow them… Sigh, Miss Luo Yan’s ability is really convenient, even I have to use some tricks to break through it.”
This Guinevere, who was mistaken for “Saint Illusion,” wasn’t actually Illusion. She really was a Knight-Captain, so she didn’t have the strength to break through Luo Yan’s power.
The one who did it was Shadow, attached to her.
In the end, Shadow still found a way to borrow a shell and, avoiding Illusion’s notice, came to attend this unusual Holy Communion.
Guinevere nodded slightly, put on her helmet, and followed Luo Yan and the others with large strides.
……
After entering the church, Luo Yan couldn’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu.
Similar.
Too similar…
The Noah Church Cathedral, a perfect replica of an Old Era religious church, was almost identical to the church Luo Yan saw in Ghost Town, except for its size.
Luo Yan could identify all the rooms and their locations even with her eyes closed.
Walking into the central courtyard, there were rows of seats on both sides, and a little further away was a conspicuous pulpit. The sunlight streaming in from the skylight fell directly on the pulpit, as if bathed in holy light.
“Priest…”
Luo Yan thought of the gentle old man from before, although his true form was a bisected corpse, “living” only because of the forcibly combined will and soul through “Envy.”
Just as Luo Yan was lost in thought, she suddenly heard a faint gasp beside her ear, seemingly filled with panic.
The sound wasn’t loud, but in the quiet and solemn church, it still attracted the attention of quite a few people.
A black-haired girl with an Eastern face was trembling, leaning against a blue-haired, twin-tailed girl who looked a few years younger than her. The latter had a helpless expression, but she gently stroked the black-haired girl to comfort her.
“Ling Qi, what a coincidence.”
Luo Yan walked over to greet them, but unexpectedly, upon seeing her, Ling Qi was even more startled, the terror on her face intensifying.
Not every “Calamity” level ability user had the same strong heart as Luo Yan. Being trapped in a “Peril” level contaminated area and encountering its most terrifying aspect, it was already fortunate that Ling Qi hadn’t had a mental breakdown.
Just having some insignificant psychological trauma was already quite good.
“Why is it you again?”
Although Luo Yan was wearing a men’s tailcoat, Alyxsia still recognized her at a glance, her tone unfriendly.
“Same as you, it seems… it’s quite a coincidence.” Luo Yan shrugged.
Seemingly anticipating this kind of situation, as the atmosphere became slightly awkward when the two met, a nun immediately walked over, bowed slightly to them, and said,
“Guests, this is a sacred place of the Church, please refrain from making noise.”
“Apologies.”
Luo Yan readily took a few steps back, not pressing the matter.
Alyxsia, who wasn’t on her home turf, although very annoyed, just curled her lip and let it go.
Encountering this mysterious girl again, she had a feeling that nothing good would come of it, Alyxsia thought to herself.
This minor conflict didn’t affect the Holy Communion. Soon, Guinevere walked in, her clanging armor making almost no sound on the church floor.
Upon seeing Guinevere, the nun who had just tactfully resolved the conflict showed a terrified expression and immediately retreated several steps, and the other clergy did the same.
This made Luo Yan wonder inwardly. Why did it feel like Saint Illusion’s authority seemed to have changed quite a bit recently, becoming more intimidating?
Little did she know that, in private, when the nuns and priests were discussing things, they were actually discussing Guinevere, wondering why this notorious… no, renowned Knight-Captain was sent to the Holy Communion to maintain order.
As one of the most sacred occasions, Holy Communion naturally had personnel maintaining order, usually an entire Holy Knight squad.
Those qualified to attend Holy Communion were all important figures with high status.
If someone were assassinated at Holy Communion, it would be a huge loss of face for Noah if word got out.
“Miss Luo Yan, I’ll take you upstairs.”
Seeing Luo Yan standing in the central hall, Guinevere thought she didn’t know the way, walked directly over, took her hand, and then strode towards the stairs leading to the second floor.
Although Luo Yan was caught off guard, she quickly regained her composure and said,
“It’s alright, I know the way… eh?”
Seemingly finding holding hands inconvenient, Guinevere turned around and picked Luo Yan up.
The cold, sturdy armor pressed against Luo Yan’s petite body, and the top hat she used to secure her silver hair fell off, but it was caught by the metal scales on Guinevere’s armor.
Her dazzling silver hair cascaded down, reaching only to around Guinevere’s knees.
Luo Yan’s eyes widened, her mouth slightly open, her face full of surprise.
She hadn’t expected Guinevere—or rather, Saint Illusion—to be so proactive, and Luo Yan had never experienced this before, momentarily at a loss for how to react.
Perhaps because she was smaller, Cecilia, who was clutching Luo Yan’s clothes, was also scooped up into Guinevere’s arms, leaving only Anna, who was a step behind, staring at their retreating backs in astonishment.
“Wait for me, I haven’t gone up yet!”
The swift Guinevere seemed to only pass through the central hall once before disappearing from everyone’s sight.
“Very strong.” Alyxsia looked at Guinevere’s retreating back with lingering fear. “I’m afraid she’s… even stronger than the Holy Knight-Captain we encountered last time.”
This aggressive pressure was almost the same as her three Big Brothers, belonging to the peak of power below “Destruction” level, just a hair’s breadth away from the ceiling.
Moreover, Guinevere was also a member of the Holy Knights, meaning she also had her own squad and could reach even greater heights.
Perhaps she was a member of the legendary squads rumored to be able to confront “Destruction” level ability users.
The banquet attendees arrived one after another, but they naturally didn’t receive the same treatment as Luo Yan. They were mostly guided by the clergy present, and Alyxsia and Ling Qi were no exception.
……
“Holy Communion… how long has it been since the last one?”
Hamid looked towards the Noah Church Cathedral in the distance. The followers of the Church of the End Gods coming and going seemed to be carrying something.
Marytis, as elegant as ever, sat quietly to the side, silent, her eyes covered with black cloth as if looking into the distance.
Wen Hua was nowhere to be seen. He never informed the other two Bishops of his actions, and no one cared about his plans.
Hamid’s question didn’t receive any response, but he didn’t mind, it was just a casual remark.
“Bishops, the ‘Requiem’ is ready.” A follower ran over and said nervously, “But will it… really work?”
They had been preparing this special ritual called “Requiem” for a hundred years. The barrier Hamid set up in the Lannister residential building was just a small-scale experiment; the true “Requiem” had never been used so far.
“I don’t know.” Hamid said indifferently. “But… She should like it.”
