Chapter 2
That fresh, sweet fragrance wasn’t a jumble of mixed pheromones.
Which meant she hadn’t experienced a sudden medical miracle; she was smelling the protagonist Omega’s pheromones.
Stunned, Su Guan swallowed hard and glanced at the equally dumbfounded hostile Alpha.
Wen Shijin, seeing the people at the opposite table frozen in place, asked in surprise, “What’s wrong?”
The hostile Alpha shakily set down her wine glass and jerked her head toward the table diagonally across from them. “I just saw…”
Wen Shijin was impatient. Without waiting for her to finish, she turned around, muttering, “What did you see?”
But Su Guan didn’t dare to turn. That fresh, sweet scent was still rushing straight to her head.
Did they only see her? Did they not smell that intoxicatingly sweet fragrance?
It was the protagonist Omega, the one whose contact she had just deleted—though she had been blocked by her long before that.
“Oh my god, that’s CEO Gu!” Wen Shijin quickly turned back, her face a mask of disbelief. “So she really came! I thought someone as busy as her wouldn’t show up.”
Su Guan pressed her lips together, silent. Of course the scum Omega would come. If she didn’t, how would the pitiful original host get a drink thrown on her?
The hostile Alpha across the table was still stammering. “CEO Gu?”
“Yeah,” Wen Shijin confirmed. “CEO Gu of Changheng, Gu Yixi. My sister showed me a photo of them together. Said CEO Gu looks like a movie star, absolutely gorgeous. It’s a shame you can’t find a single picture of her online.”
Wen Shijin had a younger sister in the entertainment industry.
“Even though my sister swore up and down that the photo wasn’t edited, I didn’t believe her. But seeing her in person today is something else. Look at her profile, that figure, and especially that aura!” Wen Shijin chattered on, her eyes quickly turning starry. “Even though there are no photos of her online, CEO Gu is incredible!”
A cold sweat continued to bead on Su Guan’s forehead as she dug her nails into the leather of the sofa.
Wen Shijin continued, “Even though CEO Gu is Grandma Gu’s youngest granddaughter, her methods are extraordinary. In her early twenties, she restored Changheng to its former glory, single-handedly building a business empire. And they say she’s an Omega who has yet to be marked. I wonder which Alpha will be so lucky.”
She was so full of praise that Su Guan suspected she had already fallen for Gu Yixi and was tempted to go for her herself.
“Too bad I’m not interested in an O-O relationship right now,” Wen Shijin added with a sigh.
…So she really had considered it. Su Guan broke out in a nervous sweat.
“But why does it look like CEO Gu is completely unaffected?” Wen Shijin turned to look again. “Don’t all these pheromones have any effect on her? All I can smell is the mix of all of yours. The lot of you, rein it in!”
Su Guan’s grip on the sofa tightened.
So the banquet hall really was filled with all sorts of pheromones. But she could only smell the scum Omega’s.
The people on the opposite sofa could only manage awkward smiles, and Wen Shijin didn’t expect a reply from them anyway. But why wasn’t Su Guan saying anything?
Wen Shijin frowned. “Miss Su, it’s rare for me to be this enthusiastic. Why are you just sitting there in a daze?”
Though she was often lively, seeing Gu Yixi in person tonight had made her even more animated than usual.
“Have you ever seen CEO Gu?” Wen Shijin whispered. “She’s turned away now, but you can still admire her god-tier back view!”
Su Guan forced a couple of awkward laughs. Finally steeling herself, she turned her head.
“Where?” she asked.
God-tier back view?
As far as her eyes could see, the crystal chandelier cast a warm, yellow halo, bathing everyone in a hazy glow.
There were many beautiful people, but only one could be described as having a “god-tier back view”:
The bright lights cast shifting patterns of light and shadow upon her, making her look as austere and untouchable as a statue carved from white marble.
“Where?” Wen Shijin pouted. “Over there! The one who’s so pale it looks like she’s been photoshopped, so blurred and prominent she’s not even on the same layer as everyone else!”
Following her pointed finger, Su Guan found that their thoughts aligned. It was the beauty in the cheongsam.
…It was also the woman she had just run into in the restroom. She remembered the faint blush on the gland of her neck.
But wasn’t her heat starting back then? Su Guan hadn’t smelled a thing.
Her heart skipped a beat. She secretly hoped that maybe someone else had just walked by. That it was just a shared surname.
That Wen Shijin and the hostile Alpha had only seen Gu Yixi.
However, the hostile Alpha chimed in, “Just now, when CEO Gu passed by our table, I felt the air pressure drop.”
The Omega beside her shot her a look. “Oh, the air pressure dropped? Then how come I feel like you started secreting more pheromones?”
The hostile Alpha gave an embarrassed laugh.
Su Guan turned back around and looked down at her phone. The pinned contact in her green messaging app was now empty.
The original host had been so in love. Even after being deleted and blocked, the Gu scum-woman was her one and only pinned contact!
Su Guan suddenly remembered what the System had told her—that the affection level could be displayed as a holographic screen. She tried to summon it.
[Affection Level: -200 (This is the lowest possible affection level)]
Su Guan: …
When she turned her phone screen back on, her hand was trembling like she had Parkinson’s.
So, she had just run into the scum Omega in the restroom and pretended not to know her?
She was doomed!
No wonder Gu Yixi had looked at her like that.
No wonder her affection level had plummeted to the absolute bottom in one go.
Su Guan took a deep breath, swiping through her phone screen, contemplating the possibility of adding “G” back.
…
Gu Yixi put down her phone, her fingers tracing the beaded bracelet on her wrist. A smile played on her lips as she looked at her venerable grandmother and replied in a warm voice, “I know, Grandma. I’m working on it.”
Dinner was over, and now only the immediate family remained, chatting around the table.
The eldest person at the table was her grandmother.
Hearing Gu Yixi’s words, Grandma Gu felt she was just being placated. “You’re working on it? How come I don’t see you working on it?” she said, displeased.
“Look how old you are, and you still haven’t found an Alpha to marry? Let me tell you, this old lady is very traditional. Don’t you go learning those messy habits from your mother. You can have your pick of any Alpha in the entire city, the entire country,” Grandma Gu said, still sharp as a tack, her words flying. She then added with emphasis, “The city and the country. Foreigners are not an option.”
The other relatives of her generation and the younger ones all held their breath. They had seen this scene many times. Nowadays, their grandmother cared about nothing but the marriages of her children and grandchildren.
Not even the legendary CEO Gu, who made waves in the business world, was an exception. The thought brought them a sense of balance.
Gu Yixi could only agree. “I really am looking. I definitely won’t disappoint you.”
Grandma Gu: “You always say yes, but when I ask you to find someone, you can’t produce a single one! It’s not that this old woman is nagging you to get married, it’s just your health…”
Gu Yixi lowered her lashes, her expression unreadable.
Faced with the storm, her usual tactic was to remain silent.
“Eh, is Auntie’s health not good?” A slightly childish female voice broke the heavy silence at the table.
All eyes turned to the speaker. It was Gu Qing. Despite her young-sounding voice, she carried herself with an air of maturity.
She was the daughter of Gu Yixi’s older cousin. With such a large family, it was common for people of different generations to be around the same age.
Like Gu Yixi and Gu Qing.
Gu Qing looked at the woman at the head of the table with great interest.
This “auntie” of hers had only returned to the family as a teenager. She was only a few years older, yet Gu Qing had to call her aunt! And her achievements were astounding. Gu Yixi had now replaced their branch as the family’s decision-maker!
“What’s wrong with it?” Gu Qing asked, her face a picture of innocence.
She actually knew. Her aunt had apparently been harmed by a low-quality suppressor in her youth and might have developed some kind of pheromone disorder. But these were just rumors passed around within their own family branch.
Gu Qing’s A-mom, also at the table, coughed twice. “Qing-qing, what are you asking?”
Grandma Gu smiled kindly, not pursuing the matter. “Speaking of which, Qing-qing, when are you planning to get married? Is there an Alpha you like?”
Gu Qing was her first great-grandchild, so of course, she doted on her.
“No, no,” Gu Qing said, her tone turning whiny. “I’m still young, I don’t want to get married yet. I want to visit you every day. Great-grandma, you should focus more on my aunt.”
She had no desire to get married. How boring would it be to be tied to one person? And most importantly, the person in question was that one from the Su family!
They had dated, but that was back in high school.
Starting in middle school, she had been two-timing with two Alphas and one Beta. The whole thing blew up in high school. One day, not thinking clearly, she insisted that the Beta’s pheromones smelled wonderful, and then mentioned the other Alpha’s pheromone scent to one of her Alpha boyfriends.
After that, all three of them broke up with her. Unable to stand being single, Gu Qing had set her sights on the shy heiress of the Su family, Su Guan. It was just for fun, anyway.
But things took an unexpected turn—who would have thought their pheromone compatibility test would come back as 95%?! And to top it all off, Su Guan could only smell her pheromones.
Gu Qing had never seen an Alpha like Su Guan’s A-mom, who immediately declared that she would “educate” Su Guan properly.
And just like that, Gu Qing gained a top-tier simp Alpha. No matter how she hit, cursed, or blocked her, Su Guan remained devoted.
She had long since considered their relationship over. Hitting, cursing, and blocking Su Guan was as routine as eating a meal.
In fact, she had just blocked Su Guan two days ago.
By all rights, Su Guan should have sent her a message begging for forgiveness today. But she had been busy lately and hadn’t had time to deal with her.
Grandma Gu smiled benevolently. “Alright, alright. You’re still young, you don’t have to get married now. But didn’t you do a pheromone compatibility test with an Alpha before? I remember your compatibility was very high.”
“Oh, that test was from high school. It’s been so many years, our pheromones have probably changed,” Gu Qing said, laughing it off. “The past is the past.”
When Gu Qing saw the test results back then, she had been horrified and begged her mothers not to tell her great-grandmother who the person was. Although her great-grandmother cared for her, she was getting old and forgetful.
A little coaxing was all it took.
With that thought, Gu Qing continued to poke at the bubbles in her wine glass with her straw.
Although the two families had a verbal engagement at the time, not many people knew the specifics.
“Is that so? Even if it weakened, it wouldn’t have weakened by that much, would it?” Grandma Gu pondered for a moment. “Should we do another test?”
Gu Qing took a sip of her wine before answering, “No need for another test. I really don’t feel anything at all when I smell her pheromones now.”
It was a lie she pulled out of thin air. She hadn’t been in close contact with Su Guan for a long time.
“Sigh, if that’s the case, life together won’t be easy,” Grandma Gu sighed, her stance clearly softening.
Gu Qing’s eyes lit up, and she struck while the iron was hot. “Exactly, exactly! I feel like that Alpha and I are completely incompatible now.”
Anyone with eyes could see what Gu Qing meant: she didn’t want to marry the Alpha with the high compatibility rating.
As everyone waited for the matriarch to speak, the woman at the head of the table suddenly spoke up. “You don’t have to marry her. But don’t you plan on giving her an explanation?”
What scummy lead…
