Chapter 11
Zheng Xuening met the gaze of Lu Dieqing, whose eyes were wide open and glistening with moisture.
This little hostage’s dreams were somewhat miraculous, to be able to sense that she wanted to run away.
Was it a coincidence, or was there something more to it?
At this moment, Zheng Xuening, from her soul to her body, was completely integrated into the wooden doll. She just stared blankly at Lu Dieqing.
Then, in the midst of the girl’s stroking and patting, her feelings of shock and uncertainty successfully transformed into bristling indignation.
“Xinxin, little dolls need to sleep obediently too, okay?” Lu Dieqing advised softly.
This was hardly how one spoke to a wooden doll.
Never in her life had Zheng Xuening been soothed and placated with such soft, gentle whispers.
No one dared.
But Lu Dieqing, completely unaware that her wooden doll held the soul of a proud Crown Princess, was an exception. In front of her little doll, she revealed her gentle and endearing side to her heart’s content.
Zheng Xuening: Who says dolls need to sleep?
A rare rebellious streak rose in the Crown Princess, but she was unwilling to expose her identity, nor did she want Lu Dieqing to know that she could control the doll’s body and move freely. Thus, she could only retort to Lu Dieqing in her mind.
“Hmm? Xinxin, why do I get the feeling you can understand what I’m saying?”
Lu Dieqing’s hazy sleepiness slowly dissipated as she gazed at her little doll.
Her long, smooth hair cascaded down her shoulders. A few strands fell onto the wooden doll, brushing lightly against it, bringing a faint, ticklish sensation to the latter.
Zheng Xuening froze as if her pressure points had been struck, suddenly not daring to move.
She had been the heir apparent since birth, the Crown Princess for so many years. It had always been her, sitting on high, scrutinizing others. This was the first time Zheng Xuening had been observed so closely. For a moment, she even felt as if the soul within the wooden doll was about to be seen through by this girl.
Fortunately, after staring at her for a while, Lu Dieqing lay back down, hugging the wooden doll tightly.
“So sleepy. For a moment there, I thought you were talking to me, Xinxin.”
Zheng Xuening: I was not.
The Crown Princess, though proud, didn’t dare make a sound, but the silent refutations in her mind never stopped.
However, as if she had heard something, Lu Dieqing’s eyes, which were about to close, opened again, sparkling brightly.
“I heard it!” The little girl grew excited, her drowsiness vanishing without a trace.
As if to prove she wasn’t dreaming or hallucinating, Lu Dieqing, without even putting on her shoes or socks, padded across the floor on her small, snow-white feet to reach for the oil lamp.
Seeing her so excited, Zheng Xuening’s heart lurched with panic.
For the Crown Princess, such a mental journey was exceedingly rare. She was annoyed with herself for bickering with this girl in her mind. All she had to do was endure until dawn, and she could return to her own body peacefully. Yet she had gone and created complications.
“Xinxin~”
After lighting the oil lamp, Lu Dieqing came pattering back.
Seeing her enthusiastic state, her dimples radiant and her eyes as bright as if they held a multitude of stars, Zheng Xuening, for some unknown reason, felt a sudden urge to shy away.
She subconsciously took half a step back.
And then, disaster!
The wooden doll, which had been lying properly on the bed, had moved back an inch on its own, as if it had gained a spirit, a life of its own, and could move freely.
This was a confession without being prompted.
The oil lamp had just been lit, illuminating the bed. Lu Dieqing would swear on heaven and earth that she absolutely had not seen wrong!
Her little doll had come to life! And it could move!
Realizing this was real and not a figment of her imagination, Lu Dieqing’s little face flushed red with excitement. Her watery almond eyes blinked twice.
“I…”
She suddenly became reserved and nervous.
The girl’s clear eyes stared at the wooden doll, then shifted away to her own toes, no longer daring to approach. She reined in her earlier enthusiasm, shrinking by the side of the bed, looking timid and completely different from before.
She suddenly didn’t know what to say.
Before, when the wooden doll hadn’t been successfully awakened, Lu Dieqing could hold it and chatter away, give it a name, and cry to it about her day without a hint of embarrassment. But now that she knew the little doll had its own consciousness, Lu Dieqing was the one who became shy.
Her bare, tender feet rested on the floor. She could feel its coldness but didn’t dare to move, only staring at the ground as if trying to burn a hole in it.
This snapped Zheng Xuening out of her annoyance at having exposed herself, allowing her to regain the upper hand.
“Why aren’t you coming over?”
Lu Dieqing’s lowered long lashes trembled slightly.
She looked up pitifully at the wooden doll, as if trying to determine if the voice she heard in her mind was real.
Zheng Xuening found her quite interesting. Before, she had been professing her love, saying she would like her and would persist until she came to life. But now that she had truly come to life and spoken, the girl was cowering in a corner like a poor thing who had been bullied, as if she had been captured and taken home by a villain.
A wicked spark ignited in Zheng Xuening. She felt an inexplicable sense of displeasure.
“Didn’t you say you liked me?”
She spoke out of pique, unable to accept the reversal in Lu Dieqing’s attitude.
Anyone who had been held and slept with by this girl for two or three nights, listening to her sweet, soft voice calling you “little doll” and giving you a name, then kissing your head and cheeks, treating you like a precious treasure—anyone would be angry seeing her shrink into a ball now, as if she didn’t know you at all.
Lu Dieqing wanted to find a crack in the floor to hide in.
She… she…
She had been hoping day and night for the little doll to truly come to life, but when this day finally arrived, it was so sudden that it caught her completely off guard.
She didn’t know how to interact with the little doll anymore.
The words she could once say from the heart now felt impossible to utter.
Hearing her own past words repeated back to her by the little doll, she was so embarrassed she just wanted to hide.
Did… did I really talk that mushily?
How embarrassing.
Lu Dieqing’s introverted side had completely replaced her earlier enthusiasm.
No matter how she thought about it, Zheng Xuening was not pleased.
She stopped speaking, simply maintaining her standing posture and watching Lu Dieqing.
After a long moment, Zheng Xuening repeated in her mind, word for word.
—”My mother said that one of our ancestors was a puppeteer, and one of the lessons they passed down was that you must treat your doll as if you are nurturing it with your own heart’s blood. Little doll… I will love you every day and be good to you. That way, you’ll come to life, right?”
Aaaaaah!
Lu Dieqing’s body trembled violently. A crimson blush flooded her face, and her beautiful little face quickly turned into a small apple.
Those were the words she had once said to her little doll, Xinxin.
Realizing this, Lu Dieqing was practically dying of shame.
When she had said those words, every single one had come from the heart, and she hadn’t thought anything of it. But when the little doll repeated them back to her verbatim, she… sob, sob, sob, she felt like her whole body was on fire.
So embarrassing.
Lu Dieqing nearly bit her lip raw. After a long internal battle, as if she had made up her mind, she slowly shuffled over, inching closer to the bed.
“I…”
Lu Dieqing felt as if her throat had suddenly seized up, unable to form a single word properly. She didn’t know where to put her hands or feet.
Zheng Xuening was no longer speaking in her mind, just quietly watching the girl approach at a snail’s pace.
Lu Dieqing thought the little doll was angry. Forgetting her shyness, she hurried over as if to make amends.
“I… I will definitely like you every day, be good to you, and love you.”
At first, the words came out with difficulty, but as she continued, as if breaking through some internal barrier, Lu Dieqing, though still shy, spoke with a firm tone.
“Xinxin, you are my little doll. I will be responsible for you. Don’t be sad.”
She reached out her hand, placing it gently in front of Zheng Xuening, and asked tenderly.
“Okay? My precious Xinxin.”
