Chapter 3: Deception
The harpy girls, looking at their unconscious leader, then at the human girl, hesitated for two seconds, then carried their leader and fled.
“You! You just wait! We’ll be back with reinforcements! Don’t you dare run!”
They shouted threats but didn’t look back, running towards the Holy City. Luo Yuxi sighed, wondering why she always made enemies so easily.
“Forget it. Judging by their attitude, they probably haven’t met anyone from the Church. There’s no point in going further. Maybe I should check out the dragon territory…”
Luo Yuxi turned back towards the forest, but a hand tugged at her clothes. She turned and saw the human girl she had just rescued, her face flushed, looking at her shyly.
“What’s up? Do you need something…?”
“I’m sorry for my attitude earlier. I even suspected you were a bad person. I almost got myself into trouble…”
“It’s fine, I don’t mind. I just happened to save you…”
Luo Yuxi waved her hand dismissively, but the girl didn’t let go. Luo Yuxi looked at her, then a thought came to her. Is this like in those stories where a damsel in distress offers herself to her hero? Luo Yuxi imagined the girl saying,
“I have no other way to repay you but with my body. Please enjoy my humble self. If you don’t mind, my sister also…”
Luo Yuxi’s eyes lit up with anticipation. She had been tormented by witches for so long, now it was her turn to use her “dexterous fingers.”
“Thank you for protecting me. So, if you could…”
“Yes, yes, of course~”
“That’s great! Please come to my house, I’ll treat you to the best food~”
“Yes, yes, yes—! Wait… food?”
“Yes, that’s all we have at home. We’re just commoners…”
Luo Yuxi scratched her head, disappointed. But looking at the forest behind her, recalling the past few days of eating nothing but fruit, she agreed.
“I’m tired of fruit anyway. And if those harpies come back, I can handle them…”
The human girl led Luo Yuxi to the village. Luo Yuxi noticed the strange atmosphere. Although the village was surrounded by lush rice paddies, it was sparsely populated.
“Where is everyone? It feels so empty…”
“Uh… most people are out, so it’s a bit quiet at this time…”
Luo Yuxi felt like the girl was hiding something, but she didn’t press the issue. They arrived at a wooden house. The girl knocked, and the sound of footsteps came from inside.
“Mom, I’m back…”
A beautiful woman with a long braid opened the door and hugged the girl.
“I was so worried! The village guards all flew out, I thought you were in trouble…”
“I’m fine, Mom. This lady from outside saved me~”
Luo Yuxi raised her hand in greeting. The woman looked at her with hesitation, then, after her daughter tugged at her sleeve, she forced a smile.
“Thank you for your help. Please come in, we don’t have much to offer~”
As the woman turned, Luo Yuxi saw a collar-like object on her neck and realized this village wasn’t as simple as it seemed.
“Thank you for saving my daughter. We only have some tea…”
Luo Yuxi sat down, looking at the simple tea set. For an ordinary village, there were too many strange things. She took a sip of the tea, which wasn’t as bad as she had expected.
“Where is this place…?”
“Eh?”
The woman was taken aback by her question. After a moment of hesitation, she sighed.
“So you don’t know where you are. This is just a farm for the angel race…”
“A farm?”
“The harpy guards probably flew out because of you…”
“…”
Luo Yuxi didn’t respond, simply sipping her tea. The woman, seeing this, glanced at her daughter, who was outside, and then pulled open her collar, revealing the collar.
“But seeing you’re unharmed, you must have defeated those harpy guards. This is a farm for the Divine Messengers to raise human pets…”
Luo Yuxi looked at the numbered collar on the woman’s neck. She had never expected this. Then she noticed bruises and bite marks on the woman’s exposed skin.
“Those on your body…”
“Please don’t tell my daughter. Although we’re not related by blood, I’ve raised her for so long, I already consider her my child…”
The woman quickly buttoned her clothes. Luo Yuxi hadn’t expected such a thing to happen in a place the Church couldn’t reach.
“The collar on my neck is proof that I’ve been to the Holy City. After the high-ranking officials got tired of me, I was thrown into this village…”
“The angels in the city have such hobbies? Liking humans…?”
“The Divine Messengers in the city like beautiful things, but they also value bloodlines. When I was a girl, I often had to… So to them, we’re just toys…”
Luo Yuxi couldn’t reconcile the woman’s words with the gentle angels she had met. As she was about to ask another question, she felt a wave of dizziness.
“Wh-What’s going on…? Why do I feel so sleepy…?”
“I-I’m sorry, I have no choice. My daughter is the next one to be offered as a pet…”
“You!”
Luo Yuxi looked at the apologetic woman, her vision blurring, her consciousness fading. The last thing she felt was someone undressing her.
“Damn it, so careless. Am I going to die here…?”
Luo Yuxi’s consciousness faded to black. The woman, her voice filled with apology, carried Luo Yuxi to the bed and took out a revealing outfit.
“This is the only way to save my daughter…“
