Chapter 77: Escaping Death (Part 1)
“What did you eat?”
Sang Jing frowned and reached out to hold Xie Yu’s chin, pulling her head out. Her other hand subconsciously pinched her cheek, wanting to see what was in her mouth.
Xie Yu opened her eyes in a daze and said something that made Sang Jing unable to sit still. “I ate, that Qin Ge.”
Sang Jing: “Who!?”
Xie Yu licked her lips, savoring the taste. “Qin Ge. She’s delicious.”
In an instant, she thought of the cold chill when they had shaken hands. It turned out that Qin Ge hadn’t withdrawn it; it had been eaten by Xie Yu.
“Do you know what that is that you’re eating it so recklessly?” Sang Jing said, pinching her cheek and shaking her head with force.
Xie Yu’s eyes gradually cleared. Her expression immediately darkened, and she broke free from Sang Jing’s hand, jumping off her. “So what if I ate it? The incense you make is so unappetizing. She’s so fragrant. Why can’t I eat her?”
After roaring this sentence, Xie Yu herself was stunned. Why was she angry at Sang Jing? But she was just suddenly very angry, for no reason.
Bei Shan and Wenren Jin in the room looked at each other. The two of them carefully took their things and went to another room.
Sang Jing’s raised hand had not yet fallen. She sat on the sofa, her eyes calm as she looked at Xie Yu.
The expression on Xie Yu’s face was still fierce, and she looked like she was glaring at Sang Jing. She regretted what she had just said, but the anger in her heart could not be suppressed. She could only press her lips tightly to prevent herself from saying any more foolish words without thinking.
After looking at each other for no more than three seconds, a puppet thread came around and tied Xie Yu up tightly.
The suppressed anger was instantly ignited. A dark red flashed in Xie Yu’s eyes, and then she glared at Sang Jing fiercely. The ghostly energy overflowed, as black and heavy as ink, and rushed towards her as if it were a physical substance.
Although Xie Yu had carried malevolence before, she had not transformed into a vicious ghost. Her base was clean and pure, without the ferocity and violence of a vicious ghost. But now, her ghostly energy was mixed, and all kinds of hatred, resentment, and violent auras that did not belong to her were entangled together, catalyzing the growth of the malevolence in her soul.
Sang Jing scattered talismans to lock the overflowing ghostly energy. She looked at Xie Yu, who was showing her a fierce side, with a complicated expression. Dense regret and annoyance drilled into her heart.
It wasn’t that she didn’t like to eat incense anymore; it was that she had been affected by these bad things.
Xie Yu was still struggling. The nine layers of soul cloth on her neck began to shatter, and the golden butterfly at the wound flashed with a faint golden light.
Her fingers slightly hooked, and the puppet thread brought Xie Yu in front of her. Sang Jing took a deep breath, bit her fingertip, and raised her hand to press against her forehead.
“Be good,” Sang Jing said, then recited a string of incantations.
In an instant, the surging and violent ghostly energy found an opening and drilled into her body through Sang Jing’s fingertips.
All the bad hatred, resentment, obsession, and madness were all concentrated together. Her mind felt like it was about to explode in an instant, and her three souls and seven spirits were all restless. Sang Jing couldn’t bear the pain and cried out.
Bei Shan and Wenren Jin, who were originally in the room, heard the noise and hurried out. Seeing Sang Jing forcefully drawing the ghostly energy from Xie Yu into her own body, they were immediately shocked.
Bei Shan reprimanded, “Are you crazy!? You’re a living person, not a ghost. Aren’t you afraid…”
Her words paused. She saw the evil spirit in Sang Jing’s other hand.
Sang Jing was transferring Xie Yu’s ghostly energy to the evil spirit through herself. But the evil spirit itself was raised by Sang Jing with her blood. The evil spirit’s pain would eventually be reflected back on Sang Jing. If the evil spirit could not bear this ghostly energy, Sang Jing would also be seriously injured.
“I know what I’m doing,” Sang Jing said through gritted teeth.
Bei Shan was so angry she pointed at her, but she didn’t dare to interrupt.
“What’s wrong? Did something happen on your side?”
The phone in her hand had not been hung up, and Tan Wei’s voice came through. Bei Shan told them that Sang Jing had gone crazy.
“Quick! Light the incense and set up a formation. Use the Seven Stars Thunder Summoning Technique,” Wei Qingyun said in a deep voice on the other side.
“Alright, alright,” Bei Shan quickly agreed and began to prepare without hesitation.
“You can’t,” Sang Jing looked up, her expression serious and cold. “Xie Yu still has malevolence on her. She can’t withstand the Seven Stars Thunder Summoning Technique.”
Bei Shan didn’t know what to do for a moment.
“Then can you withstand it?” Wei Qingyun was so angry on the other side she was about to curse. “A person is about to die, and you’re still considering a ghost.”
Sang Jing’s face was pale, her lips were bruised, and her whole body was drenched. Seeing that the ghostly energy around Xie Yu was not so restless anymore, she finally withdrew her already stiff hand.
Cold, wet sweat dripped from her fingers. Her lowered hand no longer looked like a living person’s. Black and bruised marks crawled up her meridians and blood vessels from her fingertips, extending all the way to the corners of her eyes.
“Bei Shan, please help me prepare ten candles, talisman paper, and cinnabar,” Sang Jing said, her voice weak.
Bei Shan was both angry and heartbroken, but she still listened to her and prepared what she wanted.
Taking the things into the room, Sang Jing looked back at Xie Yu, who was lying on the sofa with her eyes closed. She hesitated for a moment, then still put a talisman on the door.
The evil spirit followed behind her, the chaotic ghostly energy running rampant.
Taking off the Celestial Master coins that the Xuanmen had given her, Sang Jing used them to set up a formation, then drew a few more talismans. The candles were pressed on the talismans, surrounding her in a circle.
She sat cross-legged in the circle, and the evil spirit copied her and sat outside the circle.
Sang Jing looked at the face that was the same as Xie Yu’s and suddenly smiled.
Fortunately, it wasn’t the real Xie Yu who had to bear this.
If she hadn’t drawn out that ghostly energy just now, Xie Yu might have really become a vicious ghost and lost her original nature. She had died under unclear circumstances, and after becoming a ghost, she was still being plotted against…
So pitiful.
The room was dark, and only the candlelight was flickering. But gradually, the candle flames went out one by one, and in the end, only three faint flames were still holding on.
Sang Jing’s head was bowed, and the hand on her knee was still wet. The cold sweat that dripped from it had gone from clear to turbid, and there was a faint hint of blood in the turbidity.
She was extremely sleepy, but she still forced her eyelids open. In her blurry vision, the flames of the only three remaining candles also seemed to be slowly weakening.
This was the second time she had been so close to death. It was not scary, but she felt a little like a failure. She would disappoint her teacher and teacher’s wife. She had not yet graduated, and she had not yet done what she had promised her teacher’s wife. And there was also Xie Yu. She had said she would send her off…
“Drip—”
“Drip—”
The sound of dripping water echoed in the silent room.
*
When Xie Yu opened her eyes, the sky was just beginning to lighten. Bei Shan and Wenren Jin were sitting silently on the single sofas by the table, their faces very pale. Their eyes would occasionally look at the room behind her.
Xie Yu turned her head and looked, but she didn’t see Sang Jing. She asked them, “Where’s Sang Jing?”
Bei Shan glanced at her and turned her body away.
Wenren Jin also didn’t speak.
The atmosphere was a little strange for a moment.
Xie Yu felt that something was not right and immediately began to recall what had happened last night.
She seemed to… have lost her temper at Sang Jing.
And then…?
The memories in her mind flashed by quickly, so fragmented they couldn’t be pieced together. She vaguely seemed to have heard Bei Shan say that Sang Jing had gone crazy…
Looking at the silent two on the sofa, their eyes were even more bruised. They probably hadn’t slept all night.
Xie Yu was eager to see Sang Jing. She stood up abruptly, and her gaze swept over the room that had a talisman on it. She strode over.
“You don’t…” Bei Shan was about to lose control.
Compared to Sang Jing and Xie Yu, she of course favored Sang Jing. But Sang Jing had gotten into this state for Xie Yu’s sake, so she couldn’t say much.
Xie Yu raised her hand and was about to knock on the door, but the room door opened on its own.
Sang Jing seemed to have just finished her shower. Her hair was still wet, and there were water droplets on her face and neck.
Hearing the door open, Bei Shan and Wenren Jin also stood up at once and walked over nervously to look at Sang Jing.
Bei Shan’s voice was soft. “Are you alright?”
After being in contact with metaphysical arts for so many years, she had never seen a Xuan Master dare to do this. Sang Jing’s courage scared her.
“What could be wrong? I told you, I know what I’m doing,” Sang Jing said and smiled at them, then her gaze shifted to Xie Yu’s face.
“Are you hungry?”
Xie Yu was stunned for a moment, not expecting Sang Jing to ask this question. This made her a little unsure of how to answer.
She still remembered what she had said to Sang Jing in her anger last night, that the incense she made was so unappetizing.
“…I’m hungry.”
“Wait a moment.”
After Sang Jing finished speaking, she took a step back and closed the door, then her whole body slid down weakly.
The last candle had burned until dawn, until the first ray of sunlight shone on Sang Jing’s face through the balcony.
Escaping death.
But her body was still cold. It was clearly still summer, but she felt as if she were in a snowfield.
Sang Jing’s “wait a moment” was only half an hour. She came out in a bathrobe, the skin on her neck was red, and her face was also flushed from the heat.
A moment later, the heat dissipated, and her face was an abnormal pale. The thin parts of her skin were bruised, and even her hands were purple and red.
Sang Jing took out the prepared incense. Xie Yu watched her from the side and reached out to hold her hand.
In an instant, Xie Yu had the illusion that Sang Jing’s hand was even colder than hers.
“Are you sick?” Xie Yu stared at Sang Jing’s face, afraid of missing any subtle expression or look.
If something was really wrong, the reserved person would probably not say it.
Sang Jing lowered her eyes, broke free from her hand, and lit the incense. Her tone was the same as usual, just a little hoarse, with a nasal tone. “I was in the wind last night. My cold got worse.”
She had had a little cold before she came.
Lying.
Xie Yu saw her purse her lips before she spoke. The reserved person was definitely not telling the truth.
In addition, with Bei Shan and Wenren Jin’s attitude, Xie Yu had already guessed that Sang Jing’s state was related to her.
Last night, was she…
Just like in the snake tomb, she had lost control and had hurt Sang Jing.
Sang Jing pushed the incense burner in front of Xie Yu. “Eat.”
Xie Yu looked down, as if she had done something wrong, her voice muffled. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been so fierce to you last night.”
She couldn’t figure out what she had been so angry about last night. It was so strange.
Sang Jing hummed in agreement. “I know.”
After lighting the incense for Xie Yu, Bei Shan wanted her to eat something. Sang Jing waved her hand and went back to her room. She packed up the candles and talismans on the floor and threw them into the trash can. After cleaning the floor, she lay down on the bed, no longer lying flat and proper, but huddled under the blanket, her body curled up.
So cold.
