Chapter 11: Licking
The large snake paced back and forth, its eyes filled with anxious worry. From time to time, it would lean in close to sniff her and emit a sound similar to a “whimper.”
This was the first time Yu Chujin had heard the large snake make any sound other than “hiss” and “hoo.”
“Hiss” was its language, “hoo” was it imitating her panting, so what did “whimper” mean?
Was it so worried it was crying?
Perhaps it wasn’t crying, but it was definitely concerned for her. The pureness of its concern moved her a little.
“It’s a good thing I have you,” she patted its head.
It was a good thing she had it. Although her life was currently a mess, at the very least, she still had the luxury of being picky about not being able to stomach raw meat.
Without the large snake, she would be trapped on this deserted island, all alone, and would have to muster the energy to find food. With her abilities, she most likely wouldn’t be able to catch any meat.
She didn’t dare to imagine what a terrible situation that would be.
The large snake was convinced that the piece of fish had poisoned Yu Chujin. At this moment, it was flicking its forked tongue, very close to her.
It sniffed left and right, checking her physical condition.
From time to time, it would whimper from its throat, its gaze gradually transitioning from worry and concern to sadness.
It looked so sad that Yu Chujin almost thought she was seriously poisoned and about to die…
This silly snake.
Yu Chujin pushed its large head away, stood up, and jumped up and down, indicating that she was strong, healthy, not poisoned, and certainly not going to die.
But after just one jump, her legs gave out, and she stumbled.
She had no strength, her whole body was weak, and even one jump was a strain.
The large snake looked at the two-legged creature on the ground, the sadness in its eyes deepening. It looked up at the sky and whimpered twice.
Yu Chujin was both touched and amused, “Why are you whimpering at the sky? What snake whimpers at the sky? Anyone who didn’t know would think a wolf was coming.”
Suddenly, the large snake stopped all its movements and, without a word, shot into the forest.
“Hey? Where are you going? You don’t need to hunt, I haven’t even finished the fish,” Yu Chujin tried to call it back, but it was too fast, disappearing in the blink of an eye.
Yu Chujin sighed helplessly, leaned against a tree, and sat on the ground to recover her strength.
After resting for a while, she got up to retrieve the fish that the large snake had thrown far away.
If she couldn’t get used to eating raw fish, she would just have to eat it a few more times. In this situation, she had no choice. Who told her she couldn’t start a fire?
When she had the energy, she hadn’t been diligent about starting a fire, doing it half-heartedly. Now that she had no energy, it was even more impossible to complete a high-energy activity like drilling wood for fire. It was a vicious cycle.
She had to replenish her food first, regain her strength, and only then could she continue to try to start a fire.
She picked up the fish. It was covered in sand. Yu Chujin went to the seaside to wash it. After washing it clean, she returned to the shelter, sat cross-legged on the ground, and continued to eat.
Don’t chew, just swallow. Just swallow.
Before eating, Yu Chujin gave herself a pep talk.
She opened her mouth, ready to bite. Before she could, her hand was suddenly empty.
The fish was gone, and with it came a faint grassy scent. She looked up and saw that the large snake had returned.
The large snake had just returned and saw Yu Chujin still eating the “poisonous” fish. It immediately snatched the fish away.
Snatching it away wasn’t enough. It threw the fish on the ground and slapped it twice with its tail.
Two slaps, and the fish was buried under the sand. From this action, it was not difficult to see the large snake’s hatred for this fish.
Yu Chujin: “…”
Yu Chujin didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
This time, the large snake had brought back nectarines again, greenish-green nectarines that looked sour at a glance.
Perhaps in the large snake’s eyes, nectarines were a food that Yu Chujin liked, because besides coconuts, she only ate nectarines.
Yu Chujin sighed and resignedly prepared to eat nectarines again.
The next second, her eyes lit up.
Among the nectarines the large snake had picked, there was actually a red one.
Red! Ripe!
She quickly took the red nectarine, not even waiting to wash it, and took a bite. The juice burst in her mouth.
Sweet!
Ah, this is what food is!
She had actually eaten a sweet nectarine. It was such a blessing. She had endured sour nectarines and tasteless coconut meat for so many days.
She ate the one nectarine with the gusto of someone eating a delicacy. Soon, only the pit was left.
She wanted more.
Hmm? Wait, aren’t there ripe nectarines? Then why did the large snake always pick sour ones?
Could it be that there was only one ripe fruit on the entire nectarine tree?
Yu Chujin pointed at the nectarine and asked, “Is this the only ripe one? Where is the nectarine tree? Can you take me to see it?”
The large snake fed her every day, so Yu Chujin didn’t feel a sense of urgency about food and had never thought about finding out where the nectarine tree was.
Anyway, the large snake would pick nectarines every day, so there was no need to know where the tree was. Of course, there was another reason.
That was, she didn’t think she needed to store food. She felt that she would definitely be rescued and would be able to leave the deserted island.
This “definitely,” Yu Chujin was very firm about. If she wasn’t firm, she might break down.
She needed hope. Hope could not be shattered. Otherwise, otherwise… she didn’t know what would happen otherwise. Could she really live as a savage here for the rest of her life?
Yu Chujin gestured with her hands and feet for a long time. The large snake looked at her with a dazed expression.
“Aiyo, it’s so tiring to communicate with you. I’m already hungry and have no strength, and you’re so stupid you can’t understand. The nectarine tree, this nectarine, see? Nectarine. Where is the nectarine tree? Don’t just hiss.”
“Hiss hiss.”
“…”
Yu Chujin facepalmed and leaned against the tree, panting tiredly. She needed to take a break.
Don’t rush. The last time I communicated with it about catching fish, it was also very difficult, but in the end, it understood and caught a big fish for me.
Be patient, don’t lose your temper. Her short-tempered self kept advising herself not to be short-tempered.
As Yu Chujin was taking deep breaths to calm herself, the snake’s tail suddenly appeared in front of her. The tip of its tail seemed to be coiled around something.
“What?”
Looking closely, it was a blade of grass.
The large snake brought the grass to Yu Chujin. Seeing that she didn’t take it, it offered it again.
Yu Chujin took it with a puzzled expression and glanced at the grass, not paying much attention.
The large snake circled around Yu Chujin.
“Stop circling, you’re making me dizzy,” Yu Chujin casually put the grass aside.
She didn’t understand why the large snake had given her a blade of grass, but it didn’t matter. Right now, she just wanted to know where the nectarine tree was.
A ripe, sweet nectarine held an extremely strong temptation for the current Yu Chujin.
Yu Chujin picked up a sour nectarine and began to gesture again.
“Nectarine tree,” she pointed at the nectarine, then at the tree behind her. “Nectarine tree, where is the nectarine tree?” She made a walking motion. “Take me there.”
She spoke and gestured. It was unclear whether the large snake understood. Instead, it coiled its tail around the blade of grass again and offered it to Yu Chujin.
Its forked tongue flicked out, making a “hissing” sound, its eyes showing eagerness.
“Why are you giving me this grass again? I don’t want grass, I want the nectarine tree.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the large snake’s tail suddenly pressed against her, trying to stuff the grass into Yu Chujin’s mouth.
“Mmph…”
Yu Chujin flailed her hands and feet, knocking its tail away. “Ptooey, ptooey, ptooey.”
“Why are you stuffing grass in my mouth!”
The large snake was persistent. It picked up the grass that had been knocked to the ground and continued to stuff it into her mouth.
Yu Chujin backed away again and again. The large snake pursued her relentlessly, extremely anxious, constantly trying to stuff the grass into her mouth.
Yu Chujin gave in and quickly raised her hand, “Alright, alright, I’ll eat it, I’ll eat it. Stop stuffing it. We can talk things over. I’ll eat it.”
She took the grass, first glanced at the snake, then began her clumsy performance. She put the grass to her mouth, pretending to take a bite and chew, but in reality, she was just chewing air.
After chewing for a while, she made a swallowing motion.
Her acting was clumsy, but it was enough to fool a snake.
“Ah,” she opened her mouth. “See, I ate it. I’ve already swallowed it.”
The large snake tilted its head.
Yu Chujin gritted her teeth, “You don’t understand when I ask you to take me to the nectarine tree, but you insist on forcing me to eat grass. You’re even crazier than I am.”
The large snake still tilted its head, looking at the remaining grass in Yu Chujin’s hand.
“No,” Yu Chujin was about to laugh from anger. “One bite isn’t enough? I have to eat the whole thing?”
The large snake: “Hiss hiss.”
Yu Chujin’s head was spinning. She compromised again, “Alright, alright, I’ll eat it, I’ll eat it. I’ll eat the whole thing. Are you satisfied now?”
She turned her back, made chewing sounds, pretending to eat, but in reality, she hadn’t eaten a single bite.
Just as she was about to hide the grass, her gaze inadvertently fell on the leaves of the grass, and her expression froze slightly.
She had been so focused on the nectarine tree before that she hadn’t paid much attention to what kind of grass it was, just assuming it was ordinary grass.
Now, looking closely, she noticed that this was not ordinary wild grass, but plantain.
Yu Chujin didn’t know much about plants, but she recognized plantain. She had heard a fellow hiker mention it on a previous mountain climbing trip.
Plantain is a traditional Chinese medicine with many effects, such as cooling the blood, stopping bleeding, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial. Most importantly, it also has the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying.
Clearing heat and detoxifying…
Looking at the plantain in her hand, Yu Chujin’s mood was a bit complicated.
It seemed that the large snake had only picked the nectarines as an afterthought. Finding herbs to detoxify her was the main task.
The large snake had always thought that Yu Chujin was poisoned by the fish. Its simple brain couldn’t understand why the two-legged creature would be poisoned by a fish that was clearly edible, but it was very worried about her and immediately went to find herbs.
It had found the herbs, but the two-legged creature refused to eat them. The anxious snake had directly stuffed them into her mouth.
Stupid snake, how can it be so stupid? It stubbornly believed that she was poisoned. Yu Chujin looked at the plantain in her hand, and her nose inexplicably tingled.
Yu Chujin hid the herb in her pocket, turned around, and looked at the large snake’s worried and concerned expression. As her nose tingled, her heart warmed.
Yu Chujin spread her hands, “See, it’s empty. I ate it. The poison is gone. You don’t have to worry anymore.”
The large snake leaned in to look.
Yu Chujin was amused, “Are you nearsighted or something? You have to get so close to see.”
As she spoke, unexpectedly, the nearby forked tongue licked her cheek.
