Chapter 15: Courting
The ground was littered with glass bottles of all shapes and sizes. A rough estimate would be at least a hundred, all neatly arranged on the sand.
Seeing Yu Chujin approach, the large snake immediately presented its treasure, happily shaking its head, its tail wagging back and forth.
“Did you pick up every single glass bottle on the entire island?”
“Hiss hiss.”
Yu Chujin looked at the glass all over the ground, then at the large snake wagging its tail, asking for praise, and was speechless for a moment.
The large snake’s head, face, and claws were all covered in mud. From its current appearance, it was not difficult to tell that it had spent a long time collecting these glass bottles.
It probably hadn’t slept all night, had roamed the entire island, and had picked up every glass bottle it could find.
Perhaps Yu Chujin had been too overjoyed when she found the glass bottle yesterday, causing this single-minded creature to misunderstand that she loved glass bottles very, very much.
Because she liked them, it had not hesitated to roam the entire island overnight, just to collect all the glass bottles and give them to her.
It was now a dirty snake. Yesterday, it was covered in blood; today, it was covered in mud.
Yesterday was to protect her; today was to give her glass bottles.
“What a silly snake,” Yu Chujin’s feelings were complicated as she patted its head.
The large snake liked to be patted, its head following her hand, but it still didn’t forget to eagerly ask for its reward.
And the reward it wanted was nothing more than to be praised.
“You’re great, you’re amazing,” Yu Chujin said with a smile, praising it.
The large snake tilted its head.
Yu Chujin paused, understood, and quickly added the fixed gesture of a thumbs-up.
As soon as she made the gesture, the large snake immediately stopped tilting its head, and its tail began to wag, looking happy in a silly way.
“You spent all night looking for glass bottles just to get a useless compliment. Aren’t you silly?”
The silly snake continued to be happy, looking silly and dazed.
Yu Chujin shook her head and squatted down to look at the glass bottles at her feet. There were beer bottles, canning jars, and condiment bottles.
All kinds, everything one could wish for.
Some were broken, but most were intact and usable.
Seeing one of the jars, Yu Chujin’s eyes lit up, and she quickly picked it up.
It was an iron can, the size of a normal soda can. The can had been weathered by wind and rain, drifting across the sea to get here. It was already rusty and dilapidated.
It was so dilapidated that it was impossible to tell what the can was originally used for, but fortunately, although it was dilapidated, it was not damaged.
This thing was very useful. An iron can could be used to boil water and soup.
Could it also be used for stir-frying?
A can this small would probably be difficult to stir-fry in, but regardless, having it was better than not having it.
Yu Chujin nodded. Not bad, not bad. It was a big harvest. As long as she could start a fire, she could drink soup immediately.
Hey, isn’t life getting better? It’s becoming more and more like a proper life. The quality of life has gone up.
Yu Chujin was happily imagining.
The large snake seemed to sense her happiness and grinned along with her, revealing a row of neat white teeth.
Looking closely, there was mud on its teeth…
“Why is there so much mud on your teeth?” As soon as she said it, she quickly realized why.
Yu Chujin looked at the glass bottles on the ground. Many of them were covered in mud.
It was probably because there were too many glass bottles, and its tail and claws were not enough, so it had chosen to carry them back in its mouth.
It wasn’t just the large snake’s teeth that were covered in mud. Its claws, tail, and even its face were covered in mud.
“So dirty. I just gave you a bath yesterday, and you’re like this again today,” Yu Chujin said with disgust, but her eyes were full of smiles.
Although the glass bottles were worthless, the large snake’s sentiment was very valuable.
Yu Chujin was not a heartless person. How could she not be moved by a gift full of sentiment?
She was a little helpless and a little touched by the large snake’s clumsy gift.
“Come here, I’ll wash you clean.”
The large snake thought the two-legged creature was going to pat it again and eagerly came over, only to be dragged to take a bath.
The large snake felt greatly deceived and hissed in protest.
It didn’t like to take a bath, so it naturally didn’t cooperate, moving around.
“Have I told you that a dirty snake is not a good snake? Don’t move!”
With one fierce word, the large snake became obedient and stopped moving, although its expression was very reluctant.
Yu Chujin helped it wipe the mud from its face. The large snake looked at her with a dazed expression.
Yu Chujin helped it wipe the mud from its claws. The large snake continued to look at her with a dazed expression.
Yu Chujin smiled, and the large snake grinned along with her, looking silly.
“What are you smiling at, you silly snake?”
“Hiss hiss.”
“That’s enough glass bottles. Don’t go picking any more. I don’t need that many.”
“Hiss hiss.”
“When I start a fire later, I’m going to roast wild boar meat. I’ll give you some then. Let me tell you, cooked meat is much more delicious than raw meat. you’ll know then.”
“Hiss hiss,” the large snake responded to her in a proper manner.
Just as Yu Chujin was imagining the scene of eating roasted wild boar meat later, the originally clear sky was suddenly covered with a layer of dark clouds.
Yu Chujin looked up.
The dark sky looked as if it were not morning, but about to be night.
“No way. It hasn’t rained for days, but it has to rain today?”
She was waiting for the sun to come out so she could start a fire. Did it have to be so uncooperative?
Don’t rain, please don’t rain, Yu Chujin prayed in her heart.
Boom.
A clap of thunder accompanied by lightning announced the failure of Yu Chujin’s prayer.
The large snake next to her was startled by the thunder and jumped up.
Yu Chujin was silent. A giant python suddenly jumping off the ground. How could she not be silent at such a bizarre scene?
Not long after the thunder, large raindrops began to fall.
Yu Chujin raised her hands to block the rain and hurriedly ran towards the shelter.
After running two steps, she stopped. She had almost forgotten. Since it was already raining, she should take the opportunity to collect more water.
Although she had coconut water to drink now and the need for water was not urgent, she should collect as much as she could when she had the chance. No one could estimate how much longer she would have to stay here.
Although the rain had put her fire-starting plan on hold, being able to collect some water was not entirely without benefits.
Yu Chujin placed all the glass bottles the large snake had picked up upright, trying to let them collect as much water as possible.
She also opened the caps of the plastic water bottles she had picked up before and placed them under the rain.
Just as she had arranged the plastic water bottles, the large snake’s tail swept over.
With a clatter, a large number of water bottles fell over.
“You stupid snake, are you trying to die?” Yu Chujin’s small fist tapped on its head. “If you make trouble again, I’ll hit you.”
After being hit twice, the large snake ducked its head and hid behind a tree, aggrieved.
Yu Chujin gritted her teeth. She didn’t have time to argue with this stupid snake and rearranged the bottles.
The rain came down heavily. In the short time it took to arrange the bottles, her windbreaker was half soaked.
Yu Chujin returned to the shelter, took off her windbreaker, wiped the water from her face and head, and then poked her head out to check that the bottles were arranged correctly before letting out a long sigh of relief.
The rain was quite heavy, and there were many bottles. She could probably collect a lot of water.
Yu Chujin looked up at the simple shelter. She didn’t know if the triangular tent could hold up. She hoped it wouldn’t be a case of heavy rain outside and light rain inside.
She checked the shelter for leaks. It seemed fine for now, with no signs of leaking.
Yu Chujin both hoped the rain would be heavier so she could collect more water, and at the same time, she felt it shouldn’t be too heavy, lest this simple tent couldn’t hold up.
Listening to the pitter-patter of the rain outside, she scratched her head. Did she forget something?
What did she forget?
Oh right, the snake. Where was that stupid snake?
Yu Chujin poked her head out slightly and looked outside, only to see the large snake getting drenched in the rain.
It was hiding far away, not daring to approach. Perhaps it knew it had caused trouble by knocking over the bottles. It was guilty and didn’t dare to come over.
Seeing it getting drenched in the rain, not daring to approach but secretly looking at her, wanting to approach, Yu Chujin felt a little like laughing and a little heartbroken.
Perhaps she really should change her bad temper. When it had knocked over the bottles with its tail, it might have been deliberately mischievous, or it might have been an accident. In any case, it didn’t seem to warrant hitting it.
But this snake was really something. The force with which she had hit it was probably no different from scratching an itch for it. Look at how aggrieved it was. Anyone who didn’t know would think she had really hurt it.
Yu Chujin beckoned to it.
Seeing her beckon, the large snake’s eyes lit up, and it subconsciously wanted to approach, but it hesitated and stopped.
Yu Chujin smiled, “Alright, come over. I won’t hold what happened just now against you. Of course, I was also at fault. I shouldn’t have hit you on the head. You should be magnanimous too and not hold it against me.”
The large snake: “Hiss hiss.”
The large snake tilted its head and observed the two-legged creature. After confirming that the other party was not angry and would not hit its head, it slowly and leisurely slithered over.
Yu Chujin sat at the entrance of the shelter. The large snake coiled its tail and lay down next to the shelter.
The large snake had nowhere to shelter from the rain. The shelter was too small for it to get in, so it could only get drenched in the rain.
The large snake didn’t seem to mind getting wet, as if it were used to it, but Yu Chujin felt a little sorry for it.
There was no other good way. There was no place for the large snake to shelter from the rain. Left with no choice, Yu Chujin took out her windbreaker and covered its large head with it.
It was barely something that could provide shelter from the rain, so that its eyes wouldn’t be drenched open.
The large snake looked up, its large eyes full of confusion. Why did the two-legged creature put her skin on my head?
It suddenly remembered that its mother had told it before she died that it would only shed its skin once in its lifetime, and after shedding its skin, it was to be given to its mate.
The skin was for courting…
