Chapter 26:
“Summer, it’s a pleasure to have met you.”
Yan Qinghe had originally thought Mu Sixue would answer with a “yes” or “no.” She had opened half her heart, but didn’t get the expected answer. At first, she was relieved.
Then, a strange thought, like a vine, slowly crept into her heart, leaving it empty.
Her five fingers, which had been resting in the dark hair, paused their gentle stroking, enclosing the loneliness in her palm. Yan Qinghe turned to the side, bent her long legs, and was about to get off the bed.
A pair of slender, stubborn hands wrapped around her waist from behind, the fresh scent of a snowy mountain drilling into her nostrils.
Mu Sixue spoke in a dream-like, sincere voice, “Summer, the secret is—thank goodness for you.”
“I’m so glad you appeared.” As she spoke, she held her tighter, like a child who had eagerly gotten the toy they wanted, the novelty not wearing off for days.
Yan Qinghe let out a faint sigh. If she just lowered her head a little, she would see the tip of Mu Sixue’s pretty nose.
Mu Sixue’s eyes were half-closed. The heat of her fever had brewed into a drunken stupor, filling her eyes. When she opened them, in their depths, Yan Qinghe saw her own dazed and confused face.
Was Mu Sixue’s words a confession to her? It didn’t seem like it.
Mu Sixue’s words gave her the illusion that she was very rare, but in this world, no one is indispensable. Perhaps in a specific scenario, one person is crucial to another, such as the importance of Mu Sixue to her during her four years at UE.
But what emotional value and needs could she provide for Mu Sixue?
She didn’t think she was qualified to receive Mu Sixue’s special treatment. Over the years, she had tried to maintain a moderate distance from everyone, not just Mu Sixue.
Except for that time at the bar when Mu Sixue had helped her put on an act. They had kissed, but Yan Qinghe knew her place. A single kiss, for someone like Mu Sixue who had been through a field of flowers, probably meant nothing.
So, this wasn’t a confession.
Fortunately, it wasn’t a confession.
But the emptiness that fermented in her heart, and the leaping, undying flame, spread out into a lingering warmth. Every time Mu Sixue got a little closer, it made her think a little more. Perhaps—she was indeed a little different to Mu Sixue?
She took a breath, trying to relax her tense mind for a moment. Her gaze shifted. If she lowered her chin a little more, she would touch Mu Sixue’s lips.
She began to want to leave this bed, to escape these random thoughts.
Mu Sixue was holding her too tightly. She wanted to distract herself, not to think too much.
It was a little immersive, but more unbearable.
But her gaze was drawn to Mu Sixue’s lips. They were beautifully shaped, slightly upturned at the corners when she slept. Their color was like the red clouds of a sunset, with a hint of rosy luster.
The memory of the bar came rushing back. Her senior’s lips were very suitable for kissing. The thought made her feel ashamed for a few seconds. She wanted to pat her hot cheeks, only to find that her hands were pressed against her sides, held by Mu Sixue.
She was holding her so tight. Her senior was a bit clingy tonight. Probably anyone who was here would be held by her like this. After all, when people are sick, they are very fragile and need company.
She, Yan Qinghe, was no exception. She laughed at herself inwardly.
Mu Sixue’s eyelashes fluttered slightly. She opened her eyes, which were shimmering with watery waves, and looked at her. Yan Qinghe’s throat tightened. Was she awake?
Her red lips parted slightly. What was she saying? It was as if she were calling her English name. Summer, her voice was clear, cool, and beautiful.
Her cherry-blossom-like lips, “s,” parted, and as they moved to the “m” sound, her upper and lower lips touched lightly like closing petals. The beautiful sound drilled into her ear.
She dizzily thought again, what would it feel like to kiss her senior’s lips again?
What was she thinking? She was really muddled. Had the fever been transmitted to her?
The next second, she foolishly blurted out the words, “Senior, your lips are very suitable for kissing.”
Her mouth had spoken without her brain’s permission. She was a little stunned, staring at Mu Sixue.
“This is weird,” Mu Sixue said with a reproachful look, responding in a foreign language.
That’s a bit of a strange thing to say, she translated in her head. Ugh, her senior would probably think she was a pervert.
The next second, her chin grew warm. Mu Sixue tilted her head up and kissed her chin, the tip of her nose, her forehead… like an elegant and clingy Persian cat, touching and dotting.
She was breathing a little heavily, intoxicated by the rippling waves in her eyes. She wanted to turn her face to the side, as if that would lessen the thunderous beating of her heart.
But Mu Sixue cupped her face, her eyelids slightly closed, her features picturesque. Her crimson lips delivered a kiss, and their lips touched. The familiar fragrance brought back the memory of the bar.
Their lips were pressed together, lightly sniffing each other’s breath. It wasn’t a deep kiss, just a light touch of their lips, but it stirred Yan Qinghe’s heart.
This time, it wasn’t an act. It was Mu Sixue who took the initiative.
So, she must like her. Yan Qinghe lifted her cheek, closed her eyes, and, in a daze, subconsciously wanted to deepen the peck, but didn’t catch the bait.
“Is this the feeling?” The fragrance moved away. Mu Sixue kissed her forehead again, like a goodnight kiss. “Goodnight, Summer~”
She gracefully turned her back and fell into a quiet sleep. The earlier initiative seemed like a dream.
Yan Qinghe’s emotions were complicated. The touch on her forehead and the warmth in her memory were in sync. The physical entanglement was gone, but her heart felt as if it had been tickled by a willow catkin. She wanted to catch this catkin and play with it, but it had gracefully floated away.
She quietly got up, took a light breath, and gently touched Mu Sixue’s forehead to check her temperature. She tucked the covers around Mu Sixue, then found another blanket and a thin mattress from the wardrobe, making a bed for herself on the floor next to Mu Sixue’s bed.
It was so she could take care of Mu Sixue at any time. Later, every two hours, she would get up to check if her temperature had gone down.
She didn’t sleep well that night. Even if she wasn’t taking care of Mu Sixue, she probably wouldn’t have been able to sleep much.
Mu Sixue probably likes her a little. She turned over again, a little troubled, but also a little comforted. With these contradictory feelings, she fell into a deep sleep at dawn.
The next day.
When Mu Sixue woke up, she saw this scene: Yan Qinghe was sleeping soundly by her bed, a thin cotton blanket covering her. Her long brows were slightly furrowed, her handsome face seeming to find no peace even in her dreams.
She knew she didn’t have a cold, but she couldn’t tell Yan Qinghe the real reason.
The moment she sat up, Yan Qinghe woke up.
“Senior, are you feeling better?”
She watched as Yan Qinghe tilted her neck up, her palms on the floor, her eyes clear, bright, and full of focused concern.
Her eyes flickered, and she nodded lightly. “Thank you for taking care of me.”
Yan Qinghe’s lips twitched. Mu Sixue didn’t call her by name, nor did she say anything more. Last night seemed like a dream.
She didn’t show anything, just a smile. “How does your foot feel, Senior?”
As she spoke, she looked at Mu Sixue’s ankle. The swelling had gone down a little, but the bruising was still there.
She hesitated and gently tested its recovery, hearing Mu Sixue’s soft hiss.
“It’s not fully healed yet.” Yan Qinghe wanted to massage it for Mu Sixue again. As she raised her hand, the woman’s face seemed to be tinged with a sunset glow.
“No… need.”
Mu Sixue lowered her eyes and turned her face away. Yan Qinghe couldn’t see her expression clearly.
“Then I’ll help you put on your shoes, Senior.”
Last night, she had put away Mu Sixue’s shoes. Now, she held Mu Sixue’s jade-like foot and, like a boat entering a harbor, slipped the shoe on completely.
Her movements were extremely skilled. A new day, and all the unclear emotions were hidden along with the darkness.
She kept telling herself that this was an act of repaying a kindness.
Although she was an alpha and the chairwoman of the Yan Corporation, she felt at ease doing this for Mu Sixue. Vaguely, she had a desire to repay all of Mu Sixue’s kindness to her.
Whether Mu Sixue liked her or not had nothing to do with her repaying Mu Sixue’s kindness.
She suddenly remembered her past life, when she had knelt on one knee in public to wipe the mud from Ji Qianqian’s leather shoes.
A rainbow hung in the sky after the rain. Qianqian was not moved. Her classmates all said she had gone mad, fawning over Ji Qianqian.
That rainbow didn’t color her heart, nor did it land in Ji Qianqian’s heart. It was as if no matter what she did for Ji Qianqian at that time, she couldn’t move her.
Now, she began to not understand her past self. How much of it was to atone for the first accidental marking of Ji Qianqian, and how much was because she loved Qianqian too much and was willing to humble herself?
A long time later, she finally felt the pain of her dignity being crushed. She had forgiven Ji Qianqian again and again, and gradually, she had lost a part of herself.
At the beginning, she was like a dog that Ji Qianqian could summon and dismiss at will.
When she stood up straight, willing to dig out her own gland to regain her dignity and self, Ji Qianqian said she loved her.
How ridiculous.
She remembered that when she knelt to wipe Ji Qianqian’s shoes, she had looked up and seen the mocking curve of Ji Qianqian’s lips, her face expressionless at her act of loyalty.
She should have understood back then that Ji Qianqian had never cared about her dignity, that she had always put herself first.
Perhaps she was even enjoying the vanity of being fawned over by her in public.
Yan Qinghe’s thoughts fluctuated. She blinked. Her tears had run dry in her past life. Strangely, she didn’t feel her dignity was being crushed when she put on Mu Sixue’s shoes.
Perhaps it was because Mu Sixue had helped her so much.
She looked up blankly, before she had put the other shoe on Mu Sixue’s foot.
She met Mu Sixue’s complicated gaze, like a ripple stirred by the wind, which, when it looked at her, swayed into soft waves.
“Summer~” she called her name again. In an instant, her head was gently stroked, her hand moving to her cheek. The coldness of her cheek was warmed by the softness of her palm.
“You really don’t have to do this.”
Yan Qinghe lowered her eyes. Was her behavior too much, making her senior feel troubled?
“Thank you. I feel very warm,” Mu Sixue explained seriously, expressing her happiness.
Mu Sixue withdrew her hand. Yan Qinghe’s cheek felt empty. Her lips twitched. In the end, could she not provide what she needed, just as Mu Sixue had helped her?
Mu Sixue placed her hand on her shoulder, her tone gentle. “Summer, can you carry me to the washroom?”
Yan Qinghe’s heart relaxed. She still needed her, and she could still help her.
One arm around her waist, one under her legs, she skillfully lifted Mu Sixue. In the few steps to the washroom, Yan Qinghe had a sudden realization. She was willing to lower herself in front of Mu Sixue, to repay her kindness, because—she knew her dignity would not be trampled on, and her sincerity would be remembered by her.
A warmth spread through her heart, and even her palms began to sweat a little. She was afraid of letting Mu Sixue feel it.
Yan Qinghe was completely unaware that the scent of her Calamansi Lime pheromones, with the rise and fall of her emotions, the surging heat, had leaked a little into the air.
Mu Sixue’s head began to rest on the side of her neck. Silently, she turned her face slightly, a blush creeping up to her ears.
In the kitchen, Yan Qinghe put on an apron and prepared to make porridge for Mu Sixue, who was washing up in the washroom.
She called out from a distance, listing seven types of porridge: white fungus and lotus seed, pumpkin and millet, preserved egg and lean pork, boat porridge… she could make specialty porridges from all over.
Mu Sixue replied softly that any would do.
Yan Qinghe’s heart relaxed. She chose the boat porridge, opened the refrigerator, and found it empty.
Uh… she didn’t know how her senior usually lived. She had no choice but to call a nearby fresh food delivery service to have it delivered within 15 minutes.
Wandering in the living room, the portrait of the girl hung in the center of the wall. She walked closer.
It was a very beautiful oil painting. Blonde hair, cold white skin, a bright smile, and well-defined lips that exuded a hint of cleverness and spirit. On the right side, she saw Mu Sixue’s English name.
Cherish, and another name, Agnes. The two names stood side by side, the flowing English script like two embracing figures.
Is this a painting her senior and her girlfriend made together?
Yan Qinghe suddenly felt that the painting had lost some of its luster, not as stunning as when she first saw it.
She hadn’t walked far when she heard her senior on the phone next door.
“Agnes, I’ve finally been waiting for you to come back. I’ve been waiting for you at home for a long time. Are you okay over there?”
“Mm, you know I’m very concerned about you.”
“Who am I with? Oh, it’s my junior. When you come back, I’ll introduce you, okay?”
Mu Sixue’s tone was very doting. Even through the door, Yan Qinghe could feel her gentle expression.
Yan Qinghe felt a little out of place. She had relaxed for a while, then realized again—Mu Sixue had a girlfriend. She didn’t need to worry about whether she liked her or not.
After a while, when the ingredients arrived, she found that she couldn’t make the boat porridge as well as she had in her past life.
In her past life, it was also because Ji Qianqian had a cold that she had asked the family’s Housekeeper Zhou to teach her how to make porridge. Later, because Ji Qianqian was pregnant, she had learned to make all kinds of nutritious meals, no less than a star-rated restaurant chef.
She served Mu Sixue a bowl and then tasted the porridge in her own bowl. It was thin and watery, the flavor of the ingredients not infused into it, very bland.
The meal was not enjoyable, but Mu Sixue ate every last bite.
She received Mu Sixue’s praise and tucked the corners of her lips. Suddenly, she didn’t feel like talking.
Perhaps sensing her low spirits, after finishing her meal, Mu Sixue winked at her. “Summer, hug~ hug.”
She opened her arms, looking a little weak and helpless, with a hint of coquettishness.
It was rare to see Mu Sixue like this. The novelty of it cheered her up a little.
She knew what Mu Sixue meant: carry her back to the room.
Mm, her senior was her benefactor. She really had no way of dealing with her. The moment the fragrant scent entered her embrace, the slight, indescribable wrinkle in her heart seemed to be smoothed out.
The lingering warmth, the moment Mu Sixue’s head rested on her neck, was blown to the corner of her lips. For a moment, she wanted to ask Mu Sixue why she had kissed her last night.
But Mu Sixue was like she had been drunk, or as if her memory had been washed away by water, completely oblivious to last night’s events.
From morning until now, they had spoken less than she had on the phone with her girlfriend.
She couldn’t bring herself to ask, and she felt that actively questioning her would make her seem concerned and ridiculous.
This sense of absurdity reached its peak the moment the blonde girl opened the door.
The girl was in a bohemian-style, ice-blue long dress, her whole body exuding an elfin translucence. Even her cold, pale face had a hint of a fallen mortal’s worldliness.
“Sixue, is this the junior you were talking about?” she asked, tilting her head with a smile.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Mu Sixue was still in her arms, clinging to her neck, and Mu Sixue’s girlfriend was actually holding out her hand to her, wanting to shake it.
Her hands were on Mu Sixue’s waist and legs. Didn’t the blonde girl mind at all?
And Mu Sixue didn’t move either, just whispered in her ear, “Put me down.”
The blonde girl took her hand. “Yan Qinghe, thank you for taking care of Sixue for me.”
Her brown eyes looked extremely sincere.
The three words, spoken so deliberately, were like a declaration of war, but also like a sincere thanks.
Yan Qinghe couldn’t tell. After a few pleasantries, she let out a long sigh of relief in her heart, having completed the handover ceremony of Mu Sixue.
Her steps were a bit like she was fleeing. She said there was something urgent at the corporation and rushed away.
After she left, the blonde girl let out a “pfft” of laughter. “Did I scare her?”
“She’s just as you said, a little cute.”
Mu Sixue’s fingertips paused. The window was a few steps away. According to etiquette, she should have seen Summer off. She said softly, “Take me to the window.”
Agnes covered her mouth and laughed. “I’m not an alpha. I can’t carry you. What, can’t bear to part with her?”
“But, she held you really tight. She wouldn’t even spare a hand to shake mine.”
Then, she walked over, found two crutches, and gave them to Mu Sixue. “Here, I used them before. You can make do.”
Mu Sixue gave her a helpless look.
Summer must be long gone by now.
The blonde girl looked around the dining table and the bed on the floor. “Why do I get the feeling she likes you?”
Mu Sixue raised an eyebrow. “What makes you say that?”
Agnes tapped her forehead. “A genius painter’s intuition. We artists are very sensitive.”
Her face was a little pale. After a few words, she was a little tired, but she was still fixated on Yan Qinghe, unwilling to let go of the topic.
Mu Sixue’s heart stirred. “She is indeed a rather special alpha.”
Agnes chuckled. “It’s useless no matter how special she is. My dear sister, you won’t really fall in love with her.”
Mu Sixue’s ring finger ached slightly. She bent her fingertip, turned around, and nodded slightly, letting out a faint, inaudible “mm.”
“But, you’re very grateful for her appearance, aren’t you?”
Agnes said to herself, looking at Mu Sixue seriously. “Sister, it’s been hard on you all these years.”
When she didn’t call Mu Sixue by name, but as “sister,” her face was like a child’s again, with an endless attachment to her older sister.
Agnes, her younger sister, Mu Sichen. Mu Sixue raised her hand and stroked her head, her eyes filled with worry.
Mu Sichen sniffed. “The scent of an alpha’s pheromones is no less than yours.”
She was a little gossipy. “Sister, after your fever last night, did you do anything?”
Mu Sixue didn’t shy away. “I kissed her.” But not because of the fever.
Mu Sichen had expected it and raised an eyebrow with a light laugh. “She really didn’t let herself lose out at all.”
The meaning of this was unclear. Mu Sixue understood, her eyes flickering, but she didn’t respond.
Mu Sichen didn’t think her sister had lost out either. “But she is indeed very good-looking, handsome from every angle. Sister, you didn’t lose out either.”
Her fingertips paused. Mu Sixue seemed to have thought of something. Her willow-like brows furrowed slightly, and she corrected her in a low voice, “Not everywhere is good-looking.”
Now Mu Sichen really didn’t understand. “Is there anywhere on her that isn’t good-looking?”
Her nose was a nose, her eyes were eyes, and her figure was good.
The moment she said this, she saw a blush creep up to the base of her sister’s jade-white ears.
Mu Sichen’s eyes widened. Was her sister blushing? That was truly a first!
