Chapter 12: The Young Miss in the Wheelchair 12
The closer it got to the height of summer, the more unpredictable the weather in Cloud City became. The morning was sunny and bright, but by the afternoon, a heavy rain had started to fall.
Zheng Momo left her computer, stood by the window to look outside, and stretched her arms in a long yawn.
“Why did it suddenly start raining? I wonder if Miss Xi’s legs will hurt.”
Recently, Zheng Momo had noticed that Xi Congshuang was patient and could stick to her training plan. She was preparing to change to a new plan for her. Leg training couldn’t be rushed, but there weren’t as many concerns with her healthy arms.
Moreover, Xi Congshuang had already promised her that she would go to the hospital for a check-up in a while and would no longer avoid medical treatment.
Zheng Momo was almost moved to tears. She didn’t know why Xi Congshuang had pulled herself together, but it was a good thing that she had.
In the room downstairs, Xi Congshuang, who had moved Zheng Momo to tears, finally woke up.
She had been woken up by the sound of the rain. Her arms were lazy, and her whole body was relaxed.
Lying in bed and staring at the ceiling, she felt a sense of familiarity. Her brain, still groggy from sleep, couldn’t quite remember what she had forgotten.
After a while, Xi Congshuang finally remembered. It was raining outside. Had Cheng Zhishu brought an umbrella when she left today?
The servants had helped clean her room before and had thrown away Cheng Zhishu’s old, broken umbrella. She didn’t know if she had taken a new one from the house before leaving.
In the dim room, the bedside lamp lit up.
A slender, pale arm reached out from under the covers, found the phone, and lit it up to check the time. Xi Congshuang squinted, taking a while to adjust to the brightness of the screen.
It was indeed time for Cheng Zhishu to be out of school. She casually swiped away from the screen and made a voice call.
Keeping students after class was a common habit of teachers; staying after class was the fate of students.
An City No. 1 High School was strict with its studies but didn’t restrict students from bringing their phones. They only needed to ensure their phones were turned off during class. If a student was caught playing on their phone in class, it would be a triple whammy of calling their parents, getting a demerit, and writing a self-criticism essay.
After the teacher finally finished the “buy one, get one free” five-minute “let’s talk about one more thing,” which took a total of ten minutes, the students let out a long sigh of relief, and the classroom became lively again.
Cheng Zhishu had been sitting for almost the entire afternoon. She stood up to pack her things and took out her phone from her schoolbag to turn it on.
After pressing the power button, she placed the phone to the side.
“Is it raining?”
“Did you bring an umbrella?”
Faced with the sudden rain, the students sighed and asked around to see who had an umbrella and could give them a ride.
Hearing her classmates’ discussion, Cheng Zhishu subconsciously fumbled in her schoolbag, only to remember that her umbrella was broken and she had been in a hurry this morning and hadn’t taken a new one.
Her deskmate noticed her action. “Didn’t bring an umbrella? I did. I can walk you to the subway station later.”
Cheng Zhishu said, “I remember there’s a convenience store at the school gate. I can buy an umbrella when I pass by, so you don’t have to walk so far.”
“That works too, but there are probably a lot of people who didn’t bring umbrellas. I wonder if the umbrellas will be sold out,” Shangguan Yin said, resting her chin on her hand.
That was a possibility. Cheng Zhishu had no choice but to hope that there would be some left for her to snag when she got there.
Shangguan Yin lived nearby, in the residential complex just behind the school, so she wasn’t in a hurry to pack up and go home.
She played with a pen, holding it between her nose and upper lip, her voice muffled. “Rain is so annoying. I hope the school gate isn’t flooded again. I just bought new shoes.”
“The school gate is at a lower elevation, so it does tend to flood. How about putting plastic bags over your shoes like last time?” Cheng Zhishu said as she packed her schoolbag. “I almost forgot to lend you my notes and took them home with me.”
Shangguan Yin’s face immediately lit up. She took the plain-covered notebook with both hands. “Thank you, top student Cheng.”
When Cheng Zhishu first transferred, no one was willing to hang out with her, and she sat alone at the back of the class.
Later, the class rearranged their seats, and two “great guardians” were added on either side of the podium, pushing her deskmate down and taking her place as a “great guardian.”
Seeing that Shangguan Yin had been much more well-behaved these days, the teacher felt a little relieved. With a wave of her hand, she had the last-place student sit with the transfer student. Seeing that Cheng Zhishu wasn’t very talkative, she had a chatterbox sit with her to liven up the atmosphere.
The homeroom teacher had also heard about the recent events. She just thought that Cheng Zhishu was still a child, and what could she have done in those old matters? She was just one of the victims.
Although Shangguan Yin was a poor student, she was a chatterbox. Cheng Zhishu was just quiet but wouldn’t refuse kindness. After a while, the two became familiar with each other.
As for the previous rumors, Shangguan Yin had naturally heard a lot. She didn’t understand what “cuckoo in the nest” or “real and fake young miss” meant. She only knew that her deskmate was not only a top student but would also explain problems to her.
Her mom had also told her not to judge a person based on rumors. Whether someone was good or not, she should see for herself.
As they were talking, the phone finished booting up, and many messages popped up.
Shangguan Yin added, “Actually, you don’t have to be so honest and turn off your phone like the teacher said. You can just put it on airplane mode. It’s much more convenient.”
She had only had the phone for a few days and wasn’t very familiar with all its functions, but Cheng Zhishu had known since she was young that not everything could be relayed truthfully.
Cheng Zhishu said, “I forgot for a moment. Next time, I’ll…”
She spoke as she looked at her phone, her tone suddenly faltering.
Her phone was clean, and she hadn’t used it for long. The most frequent sender of messages was her mobile carrier. She was about to swipe away the spam messages as usual, but then she saw several missed calls.
They were all labeled: Sister.
The last call had been half an hour ago, and there had been no more since.
There were also several messages on GreenChat. Cheng Zhishu tapped to open them.
[Snowflake]: It’s raining. Did you bring an umbrella?
[Snowflake]: I called you, but you didn’t answer.
[Snowflake]: The rain is heavier now.
The last message was five minutes after the first two. Cheng Zhishu didn’t know how to respond. She pulled down the message bar and stared at the familiar phone number.
This number had been in her phone since the first day she got it. It must have been arranged by Xi Congshuang. She had also been added on GreenChat and had been quietly pinned to the top by Cheng Zhishu.
Later, she added a few more people, but none of them could squeeze out that single pinned chat.
After a long time with no response, Shangguan Yin looked up strangely. “Next time, what?”
Cheng Zhishu came back to her senses. Her hovering finger subconsciously tapped on the missed call, dialing it back.
The call screen popped up. Just as Cheng Zhishu was about to hang up, the call was connected on the other end, almost instantly.
Cheng Zhishu didn’t realize that the hand holding the phone was trembling slightly. Her heart pounded nervously. The moment the voice came through the phone, her breathing slowed, and her throat tightened. “Hello?”
Xi Congshuang looked at the rain outside the window. She said to the person on the other end of the line, “I called you before, but you didn’t answer. Were you still in class?”
Cheng Zhishu replied, “Yes, the teacher was a bit slow in explaining the problem, so I didn’t answer the phone.”
Xi Congshuang’s tone relaxed a little. “That’s good. Little Liu told me you didn’t take an umbrella when you left today. I’ll have someone pick you up.”
“…”
Cheng Zhishu’s expression was blank. The last time someone had asked her with concern if she had an umbrella was in elementary school. After so many years, it had never happened again.
Xi Congshuang added, “The person is already waiting at the school gate. I’ll send you the license plate number in a moment.”
Cheng Zhishu said, “Okay, then Sister Shuang, are you…” coming too?
Xi Congshuang asked, “What about me?”
The rain was pouring outside, and the hallways were almost empty. It seemed impossible.
It was already very kind of her to think of sending someone to pick her up. She couldn’t ask for more. It was just that Cheng Zhishu suddenly wanted to see Xi Congshuang as soon as possible.
Cheng Zhishu, holding the phone, shook her head. “It’s nothing. I’ll be down soon.”
Xi Congshuang said, “Okay, be careful on your way.”
“Okay.” As this reply fell, the call was disconnected. A moment later, a message notification sounded on the phone.
‘A new message from Snowflake’
She tapped on the message. Inside was the license plate number of the car that was coming to pick her up.
