Chapter 003: Not Allowed on the Bed
Hearing the enchantress’s cold reprimand, filled with disappointment, Ji Zhu felt incredibly wronged.
How am I useless? I’m not a real cat. Right now, the distance between this table and the floor is no different from jumping off a building in my eyes!
What if I jump and end up crippled?
Ji Zhu lay on the table, utterly despondent. Before she could curse the injustice of fate in her heart again, the scruff of her neck was suddenly grabbed once more. Her four paws dangled in the air, and soon she was back on solid ground.
Ji Zhu stared at the wooden floor in front of her, clearly seeing the grain.
?
Why did she put me on the floor?
“You’ll sleep on the floor from now on,” the enchantress’s faint voice drifted over.
“???”
Ji Zhu looked up in disbelief, her eyes wide. Seeing the enchantress’s expression, which didn’t seem to be a joke, grief and indignation shot through her heart to the heavens.
I’ve become a cat, and I don’t even deserve to sleep on a bed?!
“Meow, meow, meow!!” You bastard, you have no humanity! Do you even know how to raise a cat? I’m so tiny right now, and you’re making me sleep directly on the floor. What if I freeze to death!
“Wuu!” Ji Zhu was on the verge of tears. What was so good about sleeping on a hard floor? She couldn’t bear this injustice!
She wanted to go back. She missed the house she had worked so hard to buy. She missed the soft, big bed she had spent a fortune on!
Jiang Bai, at the side: “…”
Can this cat actually understand what I’m saying? If it can…
Jiang Bai’s face darkened. Listening to its previous meows, although she couldn’t understand what it was saying, her instincts told her this little thing was cursing her.
Jiang Bai squatted down and looked at the little thing, which had curled up and buried its entire head. From time to time, she could hear a few whimpers filled with grief and grievance. It looked as pitiful as could be.
Jiang Bai raised an eyebrow slightly. It seemed this little thing wasn’t entirely stupid; it felt like it had a sliver of spiritual intelligence.
She tapped its head with her fingertip. The little thing, seemingly caught off guard by her sudden movement, looked as if all its fur was about to stand on end. After raising its head and seeing her clearly, it looked at her with its deep blue eyes, on the verge of tears.
Jiang Bai felt that there might really be something wrong with her psychologically. Seeing the little thing looking so pitiful, she actually felt a sense of pleasure.
“Alright, I just didn’t let you sleep on the bed. What are you crying for?” Jiang Bai withdrew her hand, gracefully rose, and went to recline on the chaise lounge. She let out a soft yawn and said, “If you want to sleep on the bed, you can. It just depends on whether you can climb up yourself.”
For the past few days, Ji Zhu had been sleeping on the bed while Jiang Bai slept on the chaise lounge. They had never once shared the same bed.
Hearing her words, Ji Zhu not only felt no happiness but also a sense of frustration and humiliation from being subtly insulted!
She trotted over to Jiang Bai, opened her mouth, and bared her teeth at her. Her small, not-so-sharp baby teeth glinted with a gentle, pearly white luster.
She looked fierce in a cute way, but she had no offensive power whatsoever.
Jiang Bai looked down at the little thing on the floor. When one’s own strength is too weak, even anger appears cute in the eyes of others.
She spoke faintly, “What? You don’t want your teeth anymore?”
Ji Zhu immediately shut her mouth, shot the enchantress a glare with her round eyes, snorted lightly, and turned to trot away.
If you won’t let me sleep on the bed here, there are other places that will!
Jiang Bai watched it go without any intention of stopping it. Instead, the corners of her lips curled up slightly, a hint of pleasure in her eyes and brows.
If Ji Zhu were here, she would have discovered that when the enchantress shed all her infuriating, teasing airs, her smile was so bright and moving. Her already enchanting and rich features gained an extra touch of lively charm.
**
Ji Zhu ran out of Jiang Bai’s room. After much effort, she managed to climb over the not-so-high door threshold to get outside, only to be met with the sight of three downward steps…
Ji Zhu stared intently at the three steps, gritted her teeth, and refused to believe it. She tentatively stretched out a front paw, trying to reach the step below, only to discover that her legs were too short.
So frustrating! Just you wait, when I grow up, I’ll stomp on you three to five hundred times a day!
Ji Zhu cursed inwardly, retracted her front paw, and turned around, attempting to slowly climb down by letting her hind paws touch the ground first.
But she had overlooked the strength of her forelimbs. Before her hind paws could touch down, her front paws gave out, and her entire body tumbled down a step.
Ji Zhu: “…”
A shadow suddenly fell over her. Ji Zhu looked up as if sensing something and met the enchantress’s pair of peach-blossom eyes, which seemed to hold affection but were now filled with a thoughtful expression.
Never before had Ji Zhu been so grateful that her entire body was covered in fur, preventing the enchantress from seeing her true appearance. Otherwise, the blush that was now spreading all over her body from embarrassment would have been seen by her!
There was nothing more embarrassing and mortifying than being seen in such a pathetic state by the very person who had been teasing her all along!
“Go on,” the enchantress’s voice, laced with a smile, rang out. Her clear and cool voice was exceptionally pleasant to the ear.
Ji Zhu was a sucker for nice voices, pretty faces, and elegant hands—a sucker for all sorts of things. But at this moment, her embarrassment was so overwhelming that she couldn’t bring herself to appreciate any of it.
This is so humiliating!
Jiang Bai casually squatted on the steps, the hem of her crimson skirt dragging on the ground due to her movement. She paid it no mind. Instead, she propped her cheek with one hand, lowered her eyes, and watched the little thing before her with a smile, curious to see what it would do.
Ji Zhu gritted her teeth. A scholar can be killed but not humiliated! This enchantress must be waiting for me to beg her!
I, Ji Zhu, would rather be beaten to death or starve to death! I will not beg her!
She repeated her previous action, leading with her hind legs, and then her forelimbs gave out again, causing her to fall. Fortunately, the steps weren’t very high, so it didn’t hurt much even when she fell.
Just like that, Ji Zhu tumbled down three consecutive steps and finally made it to the bottom.
Once down, she turned back and lifted her head at the enchantress.
Hmph, you think a few measly steps can stop me?
Jiang Bai wasn’t annoyed. She just continued to watch, her cheek still propped in her hand.
Her small courtyard had a typical square layout. Now that the kitten had left the main house, it still had to cross the central courtyard to reach the front gate.
The challenge was never getting down these stairs, but getting over the threshold of the front gate!
As a cultivator with excellent eyesight, Jiang Bai didn’t need to move at all to see the little thing’s every move clearly.
Ji Zhu trotted across the courtyard paved with bluestone slabs to the front gate, and then the entire cat froze. She stared at the steps before her, and above them, the threshold that was taller than her own standing height.
She suddenly had an epiphany. No wonder the enchantress was so unconcerned when she saw her trying to run away. It was because she was absolutely certain that she couldn’t get out of this small courtyard!
Ji Zhu bared her teeth in anger, but what could she do? Even if she wanted to find Qiong Yin, she couldn’t get out the gate!
In the end, Ji Zhu returned to the enchantress’s side with her head hung low and let out a few soft meows.
“Done running?” Jiang Bai asked leisurely.
Ji Zhu’s head drooped even lower. If she could climb the steps right now, she would have gone to rub against the enchantress’s leg to show her weakness.
Seeing it like this, Jiang Bai reached out and lifted it up. Then, pinching one of its small ears, she said faintly, “Who were you trying to find? Did you forget who your master is?”
Hearing this, Ji Zhu, who had been fuming, felt a jolt in her heart. She quickly nuzzled against the enchantress’s hand, meowing while looking at her with wide, pleading eyes.
Jiang Bai met her deep blue eyes. The hand pinching its ear, which hadn’t been using much force to begin with, loosened. Her fingertips, however, tapped its head intermittently.
“Can you understand what I’m saying?”
Ji Zhu froze, looking at her blankly. Her heart skipped a beat. Have I been acting too human-like?
Does the enchantress like me this way? If she doesn’t, and if she finds out I can really understand her, will she send me to the Western Paradise right now?
Seeing the little thing tilt its head and look at her as if in confusion, Jiang Bai’s brows furrowed slightly, a flash of irritation crossing her eyes.
What on earth was I thinking? Why would I ask such a question? What difference does it make if it understands or not? In the end, it’s just a short-lived little beast, isn’t it?
Jiang Bai didn’t dwell on the question, but Ji Zhu was sharp enough to notice that the enchantress’s mood seemed to have soured a little.
The enchantress carried her back into the room, cast a cleansing spell on her, and then casually tossed her onto the bed. She herself went out, off to do who knows what.
Tossed onto the bed, Ji Zhu comfortably rolled around on the soft quilt, then looked up towards the doorway.
This enchantress is really strange. Most of the time, I can’t figure out what she’s thinking.
For example, one moment she says I can’t get on the bed, and the next, she throws me onto it herself.
Just as Ji Zhu watched the sky outside grow darker and darker, the enchantress finally returned, cloaked in a veil of moisture.
Her crimson dress had been changed for a loose set of white undergarments. Her long, damp hair was draped over her back, soaking the fabric behind her.
Looking at the enchantress before her, Ji Zhu’s eyes grew wider and wider, her mouth falling slightly agape.
Wow, wow, wow!
As expected of the number one beauty of the Nine Provinces Continent as described in the book! She’s usually beautiful enough, but I never expected her to look like this. It’s impossible to look away!
Wet look seduction! Who could possibly resist this!
As soon as Jiang Bai entered the room, she felt a gaze fixed upon her. Looking up, she saw the little thing on the bed staring at her with wide eyes, its mouth slightly open…
Jiang Bai’s brows furrowed, then tightened. As if thinking of something, her gaze towards Ji Zhu became considerably more dangerous.
“Did I forget to check if you’re male or female?”
A single sentence instantly turned Ji Zhu from infatuated to stunned. Before she could even react, Jiang Bai teleported to the bedside and seized Ji Zhu by the neck.
Ji Zhu had absolutely no ability to fight back.
Ji Zhu’s eyes widened in terror. She struggled desperately, but she didn’t know what the enchantress had done. She couldn’t move at all!
Ah!
Damn it all!
My innocence is about to be lost!
