Chapter 101: I Love Slacking Off
There were no direct flights from the Ninth Star System to the First Star System, and flights out of the Ninth Star System only departed every three days. Tao Ning and Callista were in luck; the day they got their tickets was also the departure date.
Three days later, the flight from the Ninth Star System landed in the Fifth Star System. By the time they exited customs, the artificial sun had set, and according to the local time, it was already night.
They chose this as a transit point because it had flights to the nearest jump point to the First Star System, a journey of about four hours.
However, it was more expensive and had certain psychic power requirements for passengers.
Those with low psychic power couldn’t withstand the pressure of the jump. Tao Ning and Callista, however, had no such concerns and passed through without any issues.
The Ninth Star System’s black market was indeed top-notch at forging documents. So far, no one had questioned Callista’s ID, as if the Federation truly had a citizen named Lita.
Callista, upon hearing the phrase “more expensive,” fell into deep thought.
Back at the hotel, Tao Ning, fresh out of the shower, saw Callista lost in thought by the window.
The room’s lighting was adjusted to a comfortable level, casting a warm glow on everything, making the figure by the window seem to radiate a soft light.
To blend in, Callista dyed her sunlight-like platinum blonde hair black every day.
While there were people with blonde hair in the Federation, black hair was more common and less conspicuous.
As for her appearance, she could only use makeup to partially conceal it. Otherwise, her face alone would attract too much attention.
Sensing the movement, the figure hugging her knees turned around, her long hair draped over one shoulder, and beckoned Tao Ning over.
Tao Ning’s heart stirred. She walked over and, following her heart’s desire, kissed Callista.
Callista was initially surprised, her unspoken words swallowed by the soft lips as she raised her arms and wrapped them around Tao Ning’s shoulders.
Tao Ning, fresh from the shower, carried a slightly damp scent, the scent of water that Callista loved. The person was also someone she loved, and the combination was intoxicating.
Her hand rested on Tao Ning’s back, aware of the delicate butterfly bones beneath the thin fabric, the perfect balance of flesh and bone, not as fragile as she appeared.
Callista hadn’t seen them directly, but when she pushed Tao Ning ashore after rescuing her from the water, she had caught a glimpse of her wet clothes clinging to her back, outlining her curves, her slender waist visible beneath her waistband.
The unconscious figure, delicate and pale, with half her hair submerged in the water, had given Callista a strange feeling, as if she wouldn’t resist anything she did.
Mermaids were easily swayed by appearances. Her own parents’ union was 90% based on mutual attraction, and this trait had been passed down to Callista.
The still somewhat conscious Callista forced herself to look away from the butterfly bones, her gaze moving upwards to Tao Ning’s face, and she thought: Oh no.
Why “oh no”?
Thinking back, perhaps even then, she had foreseen her future.
Lost in thought, Callista felt a slight pain on her lips, a gentle bite.
Tao Ning said, slightly dissatisfied, “You’re distracted.”
Callista licked her slightly swollen lips. The bite wasn’t hard, but the tingling sensation lingered.
Outside the window, the city lights shone brightly. This was the central district of Eastern Star in the Second Star System, its prosperity evident.
Even late at night, many people were still out and about, heading towards their next destination.
High above, in a skyscraper unknown to anyone, two figures nestled by the window, watching the bustling city below.
This was a stark contrast to the confined, cold ship and the chaotic, underdeveloped Ninth Star System.
Seeing this, Tao Ning suddenly understood why other star systems felt superior to the Ninth Star System. The difference was simply too great.
Even the central district of the Ninth Star System wasn’t as developed as the cities of ancient Earth. The buildings were crowded and layered, both decaying and advanced.
The contrast was stark, even jarring to those who witnessed it firsthand.
Tao Ning said, “The water is ready, you can soak in it later.”
While Mermaids could walk on land, their ingrained instincts couldn’t be changed. They still craved water, and throughout the journey, although Callista didn’t say anything, her subtle restlessness was evident.
Therefore, Tao Ning specifically chose a hotel with a large bathtub, so she could soak in the water overnight and calm down.
Callista suddenly asked, “Cold water or hot water?”
Tao Ning: “Cold water, of course.”
Mermaids lived in the deep ocean, where the water was icy cold. She disliked hot water. The first time she encountered it, Callista had told Tao Ning that soaking in it felt like being in a pot of fish soup, leaving Tao Ning speechless, then bursting into laughter.
Hearing this, Callista sighed deeply, amusing Tao Ning, who tilted her head and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Callista said, “I remember you saying you couldn’t soak in cold water, that you would get sick.”
Tao Ning didn’t know that the Mermaid leader, thinking ahead, was already worried about her future wife not being able to soak in seawater.
While willing to come ashore every day, or even stay on land most of the time, she still felt a pang of regret for not being able to share the underwater world she grew up in, a world completely different from the human world, with her beloved.
But even without thinking of that, Tao Ning’s mind still wandered, drifting toward thoughts of a lovers’ bath.
She even seriously considered whether the bathtub could fit two people, but it couldn’t accommodate a Mermaid with a two-meter-long tail and a human without overflowing.
Tao Ning: “Well, I can only make up for this regret in other ways.”
Cupping Callista’s chin and turning her away from the window, Tao Ning leaned in for another kiss.
After the kiss, Callista remembered what she wanted to say: “That’s not why I called you over.”
Refusing beforehand was impossible; she also enjoyed being close to Tao Ning.
Tao Ning, slightly dazed, hummed softly, holding Callista: “I know.”
But the moment had been too tempting, and she would have regretted not following her heart’s desire. Now, she felt completely satisfied.
Before Tao Ning could ask, Callista pulled out something from seemingly nowhere, initially held in her fist, then placed in Tao Ning’s hand.
The teardrop-shaped object, warmed by Callista’s hand, felt hard.
Tao Ning opened her hand to reveal a turquoise gemstone, seemingly plucked from somewhere.
520, finally freed from the thick, silent mosaic: [Wow—such a large gemstone.] It couldn’t help but calculate its value and how many points it was worth.
Looking at the large gemstone in her hand, Tao Ning: “…” So green, blindingly green.
Staring at the shimmering gemstone, Tao Ning felt her eyes turning green from its brilliance. She asked humbly, “Where… where did you get this?”
Callista said casually, “This? I brought many. I heard from the elders in my tribe that humans need valuable things to exchange for what they want, so I hid some on me.”
Tao Ning: “…This is no small sum, I don’t have enough change.”
Callista shrugged nonchalantly: “I have plenty of these, it doesn’t matter if you can’t make change.” She had a whole chest full of them in her nest.
Tao Ning: “…” Sometimes, I just want to lie down and call her “rich lady,” begging for food.
Seeing her staring at the gemstone, even more captivated than when she received the blue sapphire, Callista asked, “Do you like this color?”
Tao Ning immediately waved her hands: “No, no, I don’t like this color… It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just alright, alright.”
520: [Love is a light, so wonderful…] It didn’t finish the sentence before being silenced.
Having thought the blue sapphire was Callista’s most prized possession, 520 hadn’t expected her to casually pull out another valuable gemstone.
520 imagined a scene where, if you picked up the Mermaid and shook her, countless pearls, gems, shells, and fruits would fall out…
Thinking of this, it looked at Callista with admiration. Such a wealthy Mermaid.
Then it looked at Tao Ning. Such a skilled romantic.
The widow, remarrying, was indeed different with experience.
Fortunately, Tao Ning didn’t know what dramas 520 had been watching recently, or what kind of script it had generated in its core, otherwise it would definitely be facing solitary confinement.
Callista asked, “Is this enough for the fare back to the First Star System?”
Tao Ning thought for a moment, then said cautiously, “Honey, we’re just going back to the First Star System to find someone, not to conquer it.”
This gemstone, if auctioned, could buy a spaceship. This extravagant approach wasn’t Tao Ning’s style.
Callista understood that it was enough, more than enough. She frowned: “So, like you said, you can’t make change?”
Glancing at the gemstone, she didn’t bother taking it back, instead saying, “Then you keep it for now. I want to soak in the water, carry me over there.”
As she said that, she raised her arms.
Tao Ning pocketed the gemstone and, like a hired hand carrying a young mistress in a sedan chair, dutifully carried Callista into the bathroom.
Her duties didn’t end there. The spoiled young mistress also wanted to clean her tail, but it was too long, a section still hanging out even when she was in the bathtub.
So, the diligent hired hand had to obey the young mistress’s command and meticulously wash the Mermaid’s tail.
Those who knew Zang Yuzhu would be shocked to hear she was washing a Mermaid’s tail.
This young lady, despite her hardships in her early years, had never done any manual labor.
Not to mention washing a Mermaid’s tail, she probably didn’t even know what scales looked like. She had even asked why eggs had shells, saying she had only ever eaten eggs without shells, earning her ridicule from many, who said she was useless, a kitten born to tiger parents.
Tao Ning, however, was different. She loved learning new things and was always interested in anything she didn’t understand or hadn’t mastered.
She had not only worked in the kitchen but was also familiar with it, so naturally, she knew how to clean a fish.
Starting from the tail, she poured shampoo and scrubbed with a bath sponge, removing the algae and other organisms from between the scales.
Even for the Mermaid herself, thoroughly cleaning her tail would take a lot of time, and with her recent adventures on land, she hadn’t had the time.
The tail was very long, strong and muscular, yet a translucent blue, like fine porcelain, seemingly allowing one to see the bones beneath the scales and skin.
Looking at this tail, it was hard to imagine it could send someone flying with a single swipe. Mermaids were truly deceptive creatures.
The shimmering tail, like the surface of the ocean, twitched, the scales contracting slightly from the external force, like ripples on water. Callista tried to suppress the sensation, but she couldn’t hold back any longer.
Tao Ning, noticing the twitching tail, asked, “Is it uncomfortable?”
As she spoke, she looked into the bathtub and paused.
The Mermaid, her upper body mostly submerged, was blushing, her eyes lowered, the shimmer in them unclear whether it was a reflection of the water or tears.
Callista: “It feels… strange…”
Tao Ning: “…”
The bath sponge in her hand slipped and fell into the water with a plop.
The tail, of course, remained unwashed, because a pair of legs appeared in its place.
