Chapter 109: I Love Slacking Off Part 29
“I…” Lin froze, her rosy cheeks turning pale.
Yu Qian quickly supported her, patting her back comfortingly.
She whispered in Lin’s ear, “Don’t worry, at worst, I’ll go home and ask my mother for help, I won’t let her take you away.”
Tao Ning watched with amusement, while 520 was surprised: [Unexpectedly, there’s a transmigrator here too, and they seem to have a good relationship.]
Callista, seemingly ignoring this comment, simply said, “Lin was injured, I saved her from a shark’s mouth. She was barely alive.”
“We all thought Lin wouldn’t make it, but she woke up the next morning.”
Callista had been too busy at the time to pay much attention to Lin, so she missed it.
Later, hearing that Lin had disappeared, Callista remembered the injured tribe member, but the others said she had gone ashore.
Initially, Callista was worried about Lin’s safety, unable to understand why she would leave the tribe. After a series of events, however, she had a different idea.
Finally, this idea was confirmed upon seeing Lin in person.
Lin continued in a low voice, “I don’t know what happened, actually I…”
She trailed off, unable to finish the sentence.
Yu Qian patted her, comforting her softly, “It’s okay, just say it, maybe it will make you feel better.”
With her girlfriend’s encouragement, Lin took a deep breath and slowly exhaled, organizing her thoughts.
Lin said, “I accidentally fell into a sewer during a rainstorm, I should have drowned, but when I woke up, I was in the ocean, and you all called me Lin…”
“I was terrified and tried to run, but I realized I didn’t have legs anymore, they had turned into a fishtail.”
She was a human from Earth, named Lin Yun, an accountant by profession.
Having received nine years of compulsory education, she had heard of Andersen’s fairy tales and seen related movies.
When a real mermaid appeared before her, her first reaction wasn’t excitement or admiration, but sheer terror, fainting on the spot.
Those claws! That huge tail! Those elf-like ear fins!
Help! Fairy tales becoming reality was too much for an Earthling to handle.
Beautiful, yes, but also terrifying. She truly understood the meaning of “admiring dragons from afar.” She didn’t even dare touch her own tail.
The other Mermaids rubbed their tails together, picked barnacles off each other, and tossed pufferfish around like balls.
Lin Yun sat stiffly to the side, like a dried salted fish.
The Mermaids didn’t force her to join them, playing and frolicking together. Suddenly, one of them said, “The leader is coming.”
The others turned their heads, asking, “Where? Where? I don’t see her?”
The Mermaid replied, “She looked over here, then left. She doesn’t like others cleaning the seaweed off her.”
The Mermaids looked disappointed, but Lin Yun clearly saw the leader swimming past gracefully, her magnificent tail shimmering, a beauty beyond words.
After seeing Leader Callista, whose beauty could illuminate the ocean floor, her aura and claws were equally formidable.
They said the leader had saved her and even found medicine for her injuries.
A powerful leader, who was also her savior, might know something about the original Lin.
What if she was discovered?
Those claws looked like they could shred her into sashimi, and that tail could launch her like a badminton birdie.
So Lin Yun, overcome by fear, wanted to go ashore. After pretending to be mute for a while, she seized an opportunity and escaped to the surface.
She could speak human language, so she blended into human society perfectly. Unfamiliar with a Mermaid’s physiology, she almost revealed her tail in public, and the human who helped her was Yu Qian.
After spending some time together, they became a couple, adopting a large orange cat, and Lin Yun planted many flowers she loved.
On Earth, she had chosen to be an accountant to survive, but she had always wanted to work in a flower shop. Now, she had fulfilled her dream.
And she was much happier than before, no longer alone in the bustling city, finally having someone to care for and a place to call home.
Callista nodded: “I understand, you don’t want to go back.”
Seeing that she didn’t threaten her, Lin Yun became a bit bolder, asking cautiously, “Can I not go back?”
Yu Qian also looked at Callista pleadingly, not paying much attention to Tao Ning, probably assuming she was one of the leader’s subordinates.
Callista looked surprised: “Of course you can stay. I came here to ensure your safety, it’s my responsibility.”
“If you ever want to return, the tribe will always welcome you.”
Lin Yun’s eyes lit up, surprised by this turn of events. She hadn’t expected the leader, after experiencing such hardship, to allow her to stay on land.
Leaving the familiar ocean to search for a missing tribe member, this kind of dedication was beyond Lin Yun’s comprehension.
Yu Qian said anxiously, “Don’t worry, I won’t let her have the chance to return. I’ll protect her and make sure no one discovers her true identity.”
Callista glanced at her.
Yu Qian, trying to appear calm, met her gaze.
Understanding the underlying meaning, Callista wasn’t angry. If they didn’t want to return, she wouldn’t force them.
Everyone had their own aspirations. Even if she brought Lin back, her heart wouldn’t be in it, and there was no point. She didn’t like forcing others.
Callista took a step back and said to Tao Ning, “I’m done, let’s go.”
Tao Ning, who had been playing the invisible woman, finally stepped forward, taking Callista’s hand and leading her out.
Yu Qian and Lin were stunned, and Lin Yun felt a strange familiarity with Tao Ning, but she couldn’t quite place it.
As the two were about to leave, Lin Yun’s eyes welled up, her heart stirring. Despite their brief encounter, she felt a sense of closeness to the leader.
Running a few steps forward, Lin Yun called out, “If you’re ever free, please come visit us!”
Callista, her back to her, raised her hand and waved: “I will, if I have the chance. And if you ever return to the deep sea, I’ll welcome you too.”
She paused, adding, “It’s our home too.”
Most of Deep Sea Star was covered in ocean, appearing like a giant blue water droplet from the spaceship’s porthole.
This was where the Mermaids lived, a place known as the Atlantis of the stars.
The rare visitors landed on one of Deep Sea Star’s few landmasses, two figures walking hand-in-hand towards the residential area, bathed in the unobstructed sunlight.
There were humans living here as well, not just Mermaids, although not as many as on Kelei Star, but all the necessary facilities were available.
Looking towards the east from the residential area, one could see the horizon where the sky met the sea, the endless ebb and flow of the tides, the constant sound of waves in their ears.
The sun hung high in the sky, illuminating most of the ocean surface.
The residents of Deep Sea Star lived on higher ground, able to look out at the sea from the cliffs, seeing the tall white lighthouse in the distance, guiding ships towards home.
There were stairs leading down to the beach, but the locals didn’t recommend visiting this particular stretch of coastline.
Firstly, because of the strong winds and rough waves, and secondly, because Mermaids occasionally appeared there, and ships were prone to running aground. The western coast was recommended instead, being more lively.
This place resembled a seaside town, the sea breeze gentle and humid, everyone relaxed and carefree, unlike the bustling Kelei Star.
There were no cold, towering skyscrapers, no swarms of aircraft in the sky, and no giant virtual screens displaying advertisements.
Only the gentle sounds of waves, wind, and rustling leaves.
The house assigned to Tao Ning was further inland. They waited for a while, but no one came to greet them.
Callista shielded her eyes with her hands. The sun in her homeland was strong, but she was more tolerant of it.
Tao Ning closed her smart device and picked up the small suitcase beside her: “Let’s go inside, they haven’t replied yet.”
Callista naturally had no objections, excitedly thinking about how to introduce Tao Ning to her underwater world.
Humans couldn’t breathe underwater and were easily drowned.
It was time for her blood to come in handy. She had been too busy lately and almost forgot that a drop of Mermaid blood could allow humans to breathe freely in the ocean.
Callista followed Tao Ning, holding a flower she had picked up from somewhere, its delicate yellow petals surrounding a white center.
Callista asked, “Do you know the address?”
Tao Ning: “Yes, they gave it to me before we arrived. We just need to find the house number.”
Callista casually tucked the flower behind Tao Ning’s ear, adding a touch of seaside leisure to the weary traveler.
Tao Ning, turning to check the house numbers, was caught off guard. Callista looked at her seriously and praised, “Beautiful, it suits you.”
They walked inside, the shade of the trees shielding them from the sun.
While sunlight was good, too much was also uncomfortable. She should have brought a hat.
Even after finding the address, they didn’t see anyone. A two-story building was hidden behind the trees.
The front yard was clean, a small bird perched on the mailbox, tilting its head and observing the two unfamiliar visitors. There had been three, but the other two, more timid, had flown away.
Callista walked forward, also tilting her head, staring at the bold little bird.
It was unclear what kind of communication transpired between them, but the bird chirped: “Chirp, chirp.”
Callista said seriously, “Yes, this is my home.”
Tao Ning: “…”
Looking at the time, Tao Ning realized they had arrived at an awkward time. It was lunch break, and everyone was off work.
Including the receptionists from the Deep Sea Research Institute.
No wonder it had been so quiet along the way, with almost no pedestrians. Everyone was at home.
Perhaps finding the conversation uninteresting, the little bird flew away, disappearing over the cliff.
Callista looked towards the ocean, a thought suddenly occurring to her, and walked towards the edge of the cliff.
Below, waves crashed against the black rocks at the base of the cliff.
Callista watched for a moment, then said, “It’s high tide today, that’s why.”
Tao Ning also walked over: “Lita, do you want to go back and take a look?”
Callista nodded: “They know I’m back and want me to visit them.”
As soon as she spoke, several small black dots appeared on the distant ocean surface, gradually growing larger. When they were still some distance from the cliff, Tao Ning realized they were Mermaids, welcoming their leader’s return.
They emerged from the water, waving towards the figures on the cliff.
The Deep Sea Research Institute was still some distance away, so there was no need to worry about being seen. The Federation had regulations against capturing Mermaids.
“I’ll go back for a bit and come find you later.” With that, Callista untied her hair, her platinum blonde hair billowing in the wind.
She ran a few steps, then jumped off the cliff, her body falling like a kite.
“Ah, wait, there are…” rocks below.
Tao Ning, caught off guard, couldn’t grab her in time, anxiously peering over the edge.
Fortunately, Callista entered the water safely, her upper body emerging, waving at her with a smile.
Tao Ning finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Her tribe members swam towards her, calling her back with their songs. Callista casually replied in Mermaid language, then looked back at the figure on the cliff.
From this distance, anything she said would be drowned out by the waves.
After a moment of thought, Callista lifted her icy blue tail, bending it into a heart shape, her right hand also raised, touching her fin.
A Mermaid tail heart.
The two sides of the heart weren’t symmetrical, but it was a giant heart nonetheless.
Tao Ning: “…”
She leaned against the edge of the cliff, both amused and exasperated.
Finally, Callista submerged, returning to the ocean depths with her tribe.
She must have missed a lot during her absence. The ocean wasn’t just home to one species, and a tribe without its powerful leader would attract unwanted attention.
Callista raised her arm and declared, “Let’s go, let’s reclaim our territory!”
The Mermaids cheered, their leader their anchor.
Surrounding the platinum-haired, blue-tailed Mermaid, they chattered excitedly about who had come knocking during her absence, other black Mermaids from different territories coming to cause trouble…
Seeing Callista disappear into the ocean, Tao Ning turned around as if sensing something, meeting two pairs of shocked, confused, yet respectful eyes.
Two receptionists stood behind her, also looking in the direction Callista had jumped.
In these few minutes, they had frantically searched through the files provided by their superiors, but there was no mention of her having a habit of jumping into the sea.
But for someone raised by a family of bloodsuckers, being a bit unusual was normal, it had to be.
Right?
A silence fell, no one speaking.
Tao Ning stood up casually: “Are you…?”
One of the receptionists snapped back to attention: “Oh, right, we’re here to welcome Miss Zang Yuzhu.”
Tao Ning said, “That’s me.”
They shook hands, their wristbands touching, exchanging contact information.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Likewise.”
The other receptionist pointed at the cliff, hesitantly saying, “Did someone just jump into the sea?”
Tao Ning feigned surprise: “Jump into the sea? No, you must have seen wrong. My hat was blown off, though.”
The receptionist was puzzled: “Hat?”
She thought she had seen a person, in a white dress, with long hair.
Tao Ning said with certainty, “Yes, my hat is white, with a silver ribbon.”
The receptionist, recalling the scene and seeing Tao Ning’s confident expression, couldn’t help but believe her, realizing, “Oh, it was a hat.”
The receptionist said, “The wind on Deep Sea Star can be quite strong in the afternoon, you’ll get used to it. Life here is very relaxing.”
Tao Ning gathered her windblown hair, smiling and nodding: “I will.”
