Chapter 158: I’ll Support You By Handing Out Flyers Part 3
Following the simple map on the flyer, Tao Ning successfully led them to the escape room, solidifying her role as an employee.
The three of them stood at the entrance, Tao Ning and Fu Guanyue both pausing, their expressions turning serious.
A green light, a strong green light, and a dense, ghostly aura emanated from the building.
It was a weekend, the amusement park crowded, but this particular escape room was deserted.
Despite its large size and new renovations, only two or three employees were inside, their chins resting on their hands, looking outside, occasionally yawning.
Tao Ning finally understood why Song Yanshu was worried about attracting customers, even with the escape room located in her family’s amusement park.
It wasn’t her management skills, but the building itself, its ominous aura repelling potential customers.
She glanced at the two people beside her, only thrill-seekers would stay.
Someone passing by sneezed.
The girl rubbed her arms, muttering to her companion, “It’s chilly, don’t you think it’s cold here?”
Her companion instinctively pulled her away: “Yeah, the AC in that escape room must be on full blast.”
Fu Zhaozhao, wearing a shirt and jacket, also felt a chill: “Are you cold, Little Aunt? I want to try this.”
Although Fu Guanyue also wanted to go in, not as a customer, but to investigate, she planned to send Fu Zhaozhao home first and return alone, this place wasn’t safe.
She was about to say, “I just remembered something, how about…”
When someone approached from the side.
“Why are you standing here? Not going in?” Song Yanshu, having finished distributing flyers, her phone filled with new customer contacts, saw Tao Ning standing at the entrance and asked, “What are you looking at?”
Tao Ning’s gaze was subtle, looking at the oblivious Song Yanshu, pointing at the air: “Your sign.”
What kind of business is this, screaming chicken wholesaler?
“My junior and I designed the sign together, I think it’s quite good, she’ll be coming over after her trip,” Song Yanshu said, pulling Tao Ning towards the entrance.
Tao Ning took a few steps, entering the invisible barrier, then stopped: “Wait.”
She turned to look at the two figures in the shadows, unwilling to miss this opportunity to approach Fu Guanyue.
Song Yanshu, rarely seeing her so interested in someone, also looked over.
Fu Zhaozhao was asking her aunt, who had suddenly fallen silent, “Huh? Are you busy again, Little Aunt?”
She grabbed Fu Guanyue’s arm, shaking it and whining, “It’s the weekend! You promised to spend the whole day with me last month, you can’t go back on your word!”
Fu Guanyue, not having experienced adolescence herself, didn’t realize how clingy teenagers could be, and she quickly replied, “Alright, alright, I won’t go back on my word.”
Fu Zhaozhao, satisfied, dragged Fu Guanyue inside, no one noticing the soft jingle of the silver bell on her waist.
Fu Guanyue felt the ghostly aura intensify, a normal person wouldn’t be affected after just a few days.
But this flyer girl was different, already marked by another spirit, her soul unstable, and now entering another ghost’s territory.
This was a provocation to the entity residing here.
To put it simply, Tao Ning was like a freshly unwrapped pastry, vulnerable to attack.
Fu Guanyue, since entering, kept glancing at Tao Ning.
As the Fu family’s future head, she was well-versed in various texts, but having spent most of her life in seclusion, with her exceptional talent rarely challenged, she had developed a straightforward and somewhat blunt personality.
Her gaze was so direct and obvious that even the chatty Song Yanshu noticed it, turning to look.
She paused, looking at Tao Ning, then at the serious-looking Fu Guanyue, a thought suddenly crossing her mind.
She leaned closer and whispered, “I get it, I get it, I was wondering why you were so quiet, so that’s it.”
Tao Ning looked at her sideways, thinking Song Yanshu didn’t get it at all: “So that’s what?”
Song Yanshu giggled, nudging Tao Ning’s shoulder with hers, her expression saying I know you: “That internet celebrity you’ve been chasing, you finally asked her out? You like this type.”
Tao Ning: “…”
I’ve chosen my friends poorly.
Their auras were completely different.
Song Yanshu often fell in love at first sight, but she had a specific “type”: aloof and elegant older women. And because she was generous, her relationships always ended amicably.
So, with her tendency for love at first sight and mild face blindness, she had mistaken Fu Guanyue for some internet celebrity.
Tao Ning said, “You’ve got it wrong, it’s not her.”
Song Yanshu’s eyes lit up, and she patted Tao Ning’s shoulder: “Seriously, you should have done this sooner, that woman was just using you, she doesn’t even like women, she just likes your money. It’s good that you’ve finally moved on and found a new target.”
She gave Tao Ning a thumbs-up.
It was okay for a friend to date eight people at once, but not to date the same person eight times.
This was one of Song Yanshu’s life principles.
After all, a friend’s life was also a life.
Looking at the thumbs-up, Tao Ning swallowed her words.
Could she say she wanted to pursue Fu Guanyue, to end her widowhood?
No.
It would sound strange, confirming her image as a promiscuous playboy.
Fu Zhaozhao, excited, went to buy tickets, asking when they could start.
She had been looking forward to trying this medical-themed escape room, finally having a free weekend to play with Fu Guanyue.
She had heard that her aunt was brave, even watching horror movies without flinching, so having her around would be reassuring. Her own friends were too scared to try it.
Timid yet adventurous, that was Fu Zhaozhao.
A couple who had been playing on their phones also looked up, hoping for an answer.
The staff member said, “I’m sorry, the minimum number of players is five, you can wait over there, and I’ll let you know when we have enough people.”
The girl in the couple said with disappointment, “Aw, not enough people yet? We’ve been waiting for a while.”
Song Yanshu, seeing an opportunity, asked, “How long have you been waiting?”
The staff member quickly replied, “About half an hour.”
The girl said, “More than that, almost an hour, we’ve been waiting since after lunch.”
Song Yanshu: “It’s not good to make people wait so long, since we’re only one person short, how about one of our new employees join you?”
Tao Ning hadn’t expected this, and sensing the increasingly restless aura inside, she wanted to leave for her own safety.
But she couldn’t miss this opportunity to approach Fu Guanyue.
Song Yanshu winked at her, lowering her voice: “Don’t worry, it’s just a small favor, consider it your payment for today.”
Although unintentional, it worked perfectly, and Tao Ning said, “Thank you.”
This time, she was truly grateful.
The couple, hearing they could finally start, stood up excitedly.
Handing over their phones and receiving walkie-talkies, Tao Ning, the unpaid volunteer, followed them inside.
Well, it has to be done.
The aura wasn’t that strong, it probably wouldn’t attack directly.
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!”
“Don’t come any closer!!”
“The clue! That’s the clue, we have to get it!!!”
Ten minutes later, Tao Ning, crouched behind the nurse’s station, scratched her ear, and continued working on the puzzle.
She hadn’t known these easily frightened players had chosen the hardest difficulty, and they were now being chased by the nurse NPC, screaming.
“Waaah! Why is the wheelchair moving by itself?! Scatter, or we’ll be run over!”
“Ahhh, I’m scared, honey, protect me!”
Listening to the screams, Tao Ning finally understood Song Yanshu’s nickname, with so many customers, it would be deafening.
She was calculating the code for the next door when she heard a noise beside her and turned around.
A patient NPC, his head wrapped in bandages, slowly crawled out from a corner, letting out a creepy moan, his eyes meeting Tao Ning’s.
The patient NPC’s voice was eerie: “Do you know where my eyes are?”
He wore a hospital gown, his head wrapped in bloodstained bandages, his eye sockets hollow, blood oozing from them, staining his face red.
His neck was also wrapped in thick bandages, like a scarf.
Tao Ning handed him her notebook, asking in return, “Do you know the last digit?”
“…” The patient NPC’s hollow eye sockets seemed to glow redder. “I have no eyes, I can’t see.”
Tao Ning: “I can read it to you, you just have to calculate it.”
The patient NPC fell silent.
Tao Ning looked at him expectantly, and after a moment of silence, he slowly retreated.
She was probably the least interesting player he had ever encountered, not scared at all.
The chilling aura faded, and Tao Ning, relieved, calculated the last digit amidst the screams and prepared to stand up.
These low-level spirits, unable to remember how they died, their resentment weak, weren’t very intelligent, but they also wouldn’t leave so easily, probably wary of Fu Guanyue’s aura nearby.
Fu Guanyue, sensing a different aura, walked towards the nurse’s station, her hand reaching for the jade brush in her hair.
Having left in a hurry, she hadn’t brought any other talismans, and using this would attract attention, but she had no other choice.
Before she could reach the nurse’s station, a figure suddenly stood up, Tao Ning, who had been hiding behind it.
Tao Ning stood up too quickly, her vision blurring, and she almost stumbled backward.
Fu Guanyue quickly reached out, catching her: “Are you alright?”
She looked very pale.
Tao Ning, having only had a cup of coffee for breakfast after two days of barely eating, was experiencing low blood sugar. She smiled faintly at Fu Guanyue: “I’m fine.”
But she didn’t look fine.
In the dim light, Tao Ning’s eyes were gentle as she replied softly, “I think my blood sugar is a bit low.”
“Low blood sugar?” Fu Guanyue patted her pockets, not having brought any candy, only a few energizing talismans.
These were for Fu Zhaozhao, who was always scared yet eager to try everything, and she had discreetly placed one on her earlier.
But even Fu Guanyue, despite her lack of social skills, knew that taking out a talisman now would make her look like a charlatan.
Fu Guanyue asked, “You didn’t have lunch?”
Logically, her blood sugar shouldn’t be low so quickly.
Tao Ning shook her head: “I didn’t have time.”
Fu Guanyue couldn’t think of any reason for not having time to eat, she had never slept in, so she asked, “Not enough time during lunch break?”
Having been chased out of her apartment by a ghost first thing in the morning, then dragged here by Song Yanshu to hand out flyers, she indeed hadn’t had time.
Tao Ning didn’t deny it: “Something like that.”
She remembered seeing Tao Ning handing out flyers under a tree earlier, a sheen of sweat on her forehead, she must have been working for a long time, so she hadn’t had time to eat.
Needing to hand out flyers to make a living, and unable to afford a meal, she must be struggling financially.
With just a few words, Fu Guanyue had already painted a picture of a poor, hardworking girl who had to work part-time even on weekends, unable to afford a meal.
Looking at Tao Ning, she seemed like a wilting flower in need of care.
Fu Guanyue slowly retracted her hand, the warmth from Tao Ning’s skin seemingly lingering on her fingertips: “If you’re not feeling well, you should go outside and rest.”
This little pastry shouldn’t stay here any longer.
Fu Guanyue didn’t know that the “little pastry” in her eyes had almost taken a bite out of her, a simple math problem scaring her away.
Tao Ning shook her head: “I’m fine, I’ve rested, and I don’t want to ruin the fun.”
Fu Guanyue, hearing this, felt even more certain that she wasn’t the type to call the police, and since Tao Ning didn’t have her phone, she wanted to warn her about the ghost.
She wanted to tell her that the ghost had already marked her and would follow her to the ends of the earth to devour her soul.
Preparing herself mentally, Fu Guanyue felt like Fa Hai, the monk trying to convince Xu Xian that there was a snake demon in his house.
Except, she was actually a good person.
“I got it!” Fu Zhaozhao shouted excitedly, holding up a red staff ID card. “Access to Area A, let’s go, let’s go to the next area, Little Aunt, where are you?”
Fu Guanyue instinctively replied, “I’m here, I’ll be right there.”
Having missed the opportunity, Fu Guanyue gave up. She turned to Tao Ning: “We’re going through, do you want to come?”
Tao Ning nodded: “Sure, let’s go together.”
They walked away, and if they had looked back, they would have seen a shadow gradually forming where Tao Ning had been standing.
The shadow solidified into a human-like figure, floating, holding its head in its arms, its bloodshot, empty eye sockets staring at them.
Perhaps they already knew, but they didn’t look back.
After another chase scene, they finally reached the next door.
Fu Zhaozhao, sweating, swiped the staff card, and the door beeped: “Verification successful, please enter the password.”
They relaxed, then tensed up again: “!!!”
Fu Zhaozhao’s smile froze.
The boyfriend in the couple said, “Seriously, there’s a password too? How annoying!”
His girlfriend, hiding in his arms, said nervously, “The nurse is chasing us, we have to go back and find the password.”
Tao Ning reached out, her voice calm: “I know the password.”
Her slender fingers tapped a few buttons, the machine beeped green, and the lock clicked open: “Verification successful, please proceed to Area B.”
The metal door slowly opened, revealing a mist-filled corridor, a figure faintly visible at the end.
Fu Zhaozhao said, “Little Aunt, is there someone there?”
Fu Guanyue casually covered her eyes: “There’s something there.”
