Chapter 170: I’ll Support You By Handing Out Flyers Part 15(1)
As the banquet was about to begin, many guests had already arrived.
Tao Ning walked upstairs, under everyone’s gaze, the butler hurrying after her, afraid she would cause trouble before even meeting Master Tao.
“Miss, Miss, slow down, I can’t keep up!” The butler, his age catching up to him, was out of breath.
“Who’s that? Going upstairs?”
The person who was asked looked up at the figure on the stairs, a familiar sight.
Holding a wine glass, he replied casually, “Probably CEO Tao’s eldest daughter, she’s always been like this, carefree and unrestrained.”
Hearing this, someone said in surprise, “Tao Ning? It’s her? Dressed so casually, how disrespectful.”
“Disrespectful or not, there are benefits to being wild.”
All the gossip was left behind.
Upstairs was much quieter, the thick carpet muffling all footsteps.
Father Tao, having received news of her arrival, was waiting in the lounge, his new wife and children advising him not to get angry at the rebellious girl.
Young Master Tao said reassuringly, “Don’t worry, Father, she still needs your money, she wouldn’t dare disobey you.”
Just as he spoke, Tao Ning entered, followed by the panting butler.
He was old and couldn’t keep up, not even having time to knock.
Tao Ning heard his words clearly, and the room fell silent.
Young Master Tao, still young, had only said that to please his father, not expecting to be overheard, and he felt embarrassed.
Mrs. Tao, also present, seeing the awkward silence, said with a smile, “A-Ning, you’re back! Your father has been asking about you, come sit.”
In the past, Tao Ning would have been furious, why could they act like a happy family while she was treated like an outsider?
But surprisingly, she wasn’t angry, just observing them with amusement.
They were also looking at her, she seemed to have changed, her appearance neater and cleaner.
Under their scrutinizing gazes, Tao Ning walked in.
As she took a step, Father Tao’s voice, feigning authority, boomed: “You finally decided to show up! Making me ask you repeatedly to attend my birthday party! Where have you been? And dressed like that, so inappropriately, are you trying to embarrass me? You’re becoming more and more unruly!”
Tao Ning: “I don’t know, then I’ll leave.”
With that, she turned to walk away.
Her decisive action stunned them.
Mrs. Tao quickly stood up and tried to stop her, reaching for her arm, but Tao Ning discreetly avoided her touch: “A-Ning, you know your father, he’s always like this, he hasn’t been feeling well lately, don’t mind him.”
Tao Ning: “I know, which is why I’m not staying to be scolded, I’ll say it again, tell me what you want, or I’m leaving.”
These familiar words made Father Tao instinctively reach for his medicine, but he had forgotten to bring it today, so he forced himself to calm down.
But years of being in power and his family’s constant flattery had made him arrogant and condescending, always finding an opportunity to lecture others, and seeing Tao Ning pause, he assumed she had given in.
Father Tao: “If you dare leave this hotel today, I’ll cut you off!”
Tao Ning: “Are you joking? I’m spending the dividends from my shares, if it’s not enough, you should be the one crying, the Tao Corporation isn’t far from bankruptcy.”
Everyone: “…”
While her words were crude, they weren’t wrong, a bluntness that was strangely effective.
Young Master Tao quickly said, “Father, have some tea and calm down.”
Father Tao, his hand trembling with anger, swatted his son’s hand away: “Can’t you speak properly?!”
Tao Ning’s attitude was firm: “If you can, so can I. And have your bodyguards leave, I’ll be contacting Second Miss Song every ten minutes, if she doesn’t hear from me, she’ll call the police, whether this birthday party continues is up to you.”
Father Tao: “…”
After a brief standoff, Father Tao finally gave in, realizing Tao Ning was serious, he couldn’t afford to let her leave, so he gave the butler a look.
The butler dismissed the bodyguards, and Tao Ning sat down across from Father Tao.
“You and your brother go play outside, your father and I need to talk to your sister,” Mrs. Tao said, pulling her frowning daughter aside and having the two children escorted out.
Father Tao looked Tao Ning up and down, his expression disapproving: “Couldn’t you have dressed better? You make it seem like I’m mistreating you.”
No need for pleasantries, Tao Ning got straight to the point: “What’s this about a jade pendant left by Grandmother?”
Father Tao’s expression flickered, and he said, “I only remembered recently that your grandmother left you a jade pendant, she instructed me to give it to you before your twenty-fourth birthday, but I was busy and forgot. Your birthday is coming up soon, I’ll give it to you after the banquet, as long as you behave today.”
He was indeed adaptable, no longer provoking Tao Ning, his words almost reasonable.
Tao Ning, ignoring the coffee on the table, asked, “Before my twenty-fourth birthday?”
She had just turned twenty-four, her birthday a month ago.
Father Tao nodded. Mrs. Tao, despite her dislike for Tao Ning, maintained a polite facade in front of Father Tao, preferring subtle jabs.
She said with a smile, “Your father didn’t do it intentionally, he was ill and hospitalized for a while, he just recovered recently… Since we’re all here today, why don’t you change your clothes and join your father downstairs to greet the guests?”
Father Tao: “I knew you wouldn’t dress properly, I had your Aunt Yan arrange a stylist for you, go change, the banquet is about to start. You’re a grown woman now, and I still have to worry about you.”
Tao Ning, staring at his forehead, frowned almost imperceptibly: “You should worry about yourself instead.”
“You!” Father Tao’s suppressed anger flared up, his face turning red again.
The butler quickly offered him his medicine: “Master, here’s your medicine, calm down.”
While Father Tao was taking his medicine, Tao Ning turned to leave.
She was actually interested in the jade pendant, seeing what they were up to wouldn’t hurt.
The butler, afraid she would leave, followed her, no one would be surprised if she did.
Seeing her hesitation, the couple relaxed slightly, and just as Tao Ning reached for the doorknob, she suddenly turned around: “When Grandmother gave you the jade pendant, did she also mention that I would face a tribulation?”
This question startled Father Tao, he almost asked, “How did you know?”
But he remembered that he was alone in his mother’s hospital room when she died, but even if she knew, so what?
He was just late in giving it to her, not refusing, what more did she want?
“Your grandmother only told me to give it to you, she didn’t say anything else,” he replied, suppressing his unease.
Tao Ning, having already seen the answer in his expression, opened the door and left.
The melodious sound of music drifted from outside, a hired orchestra playing on stage, the pianist’s fingers dancing across the keys, a captivating performance.
Tao Ning looked down at the bustling ballroom, the crystal chandeliers casting a dreamy glow, the champagne glasses shimmering in the guests’ hands.
Even the air seemed to be filled with the scent of money.
The Tao Corporation was one of the city’s oldest and most influential families, having once been at its peak, then declining after Old Madam Tao’s death, the position of chairman passed to her only son.
Tao Ning thought, Who would have guessed that this giant was now teetering on the brink of collapse?
The butler, impatient, urged her, “Miss, the banquet is about to start, please go and change.”
Tao Ning looked away: “Let’s go then.”
In the dressing room, the styling team, who had been waiting, were ready with their concealers, but they were stunned upon seeing Tao Ning.
The Tao family had described their eldest daughter as a rebellious young woman covered in tattoos, even on her fingertips, but this was clearly a misrepresentation.
Who was this elegant and refined young lady?
The difference was striking.
The stylist, after a moment of silence, said decisively, “Change the high-necked black dress, bring out the other one.”
She had a new plan for Tao Ning’s look.
