Chapter 173: I’ll Support You By Handing Out Flyers Part 18
Fu Guanyue, startled awake by the sound of Tao Ning opening the door, quickly released the paper crane and transformed the Shanhe Brush back into a hairpin.
Seeing Tao Ning in casual clothes, she felt a moment of panic, instinctively reaching for the hairpin to fix her hair, then realizing there was no need for such nervousness, if they were to be together, there was nothing she couldn’t share with Tao Ning.
Tao Ning: “Breakfast is ready, come eat after you wash up.”
Fu Guanyue didn’t move, just stood there, looking at Tao Ning.
She had seen couples kissing in the morning in the dramas she watched with Fu Zhaozhao, and she liked it.
“Why aren’t you…” Before she could finish, Tao Ning, understanding the unspoken expectation in her eyes, walked over, embraced her, and kissed her cheek.
Holding her close, Tao Ning said, “Let’s go, girlfriend, wash up and have breakfast.”
Fu Guanyue, her face slightly red, buried her face in Tao Ning’s embrace, her voice muffled: “How did you know what I was thinking?”
Love wasn’t enough to describe it, and for some reason, these words touched Tao Ning.
Tao Ning, feigning seriousness, held her close and thought for a moment: “That’s a long story.”
Fu Guanyue, who had just asked casually, was now curious: “How long?”
Tao Ning kissed her forehead: “Very long, a story that began thousands of years ago.”
Fu Guanyue chuckled, surprised by Tao Ning’s ability to make things up, but she didn’t expose her, just asking playfully, “Thousands of years ago? Why not since the beginning of time?”
Tao Ning shook her head: “Not that long ago, but still a long time ago, there was a person, born with a ‘deficient constitution,’ destined to lose all five senses, her lifespan shorter than an ant’s, not even reaching twenty.”
“Her parents, pitying her, tried everything to cure her.”
“But it wasn’t easy, and after many failed attempts, her mother finally found a secret method, a dangerous one, if it failed, she would be destroyed…”
Fu Guanyue was captivated, asking, “Then what happened? Did it work?”
Tao Ning, looking at the person in her arms: “It did work, but she…”
Just then, the sky outside suddenly darkened.
A loud clap of thunder echoed, startling Fu Guanyue.
She looked outside, dark clouds gathering: “Is it going to rain?”
Tao Ning patted her back: “Don’t worry, it’s not a happy ending, let’s not talk about it, I’ll tell you about another drama…”
Fu Guanyue, touched, then chuckled: “Are you trying to say we knew each other in a past life, that’s why we’re so connected?”
If Fu Zhaozhao heard this, she would complain about the cliché lines.
Tao Ning looked innocent: “Is that not allowed?”
Fu Guanyue, suppressing her laughter, nodded: “It’s allowed, of course.”
Tao Ning: “That’s how they do it in dramas, Song Yanshu loves these stories, alright, go wash up, breakfast is getting cold.”
Fu Guanyue, remembering the purpose of her visit, went to the bathroom.
As the sound of running water came from inside, Tao Ning walked over and closed the window, muttering at the dispersing clouds, “No need for such a dramatic reaction, just because I can’t tell the story.”
Sky: “…”
Seeing the clouds gathering again, she quickly closed the window.
While petty, the world consciousness couldn’t directly interfere.
After breakfast, Fu Guanyue finally remembered to charge her phone and check the messages from Fu Xi.
Having disappeared for a night, Fu Xi had sent many messages, but after careful consideration, hadn’t used a communication talisman.
Remembering last night’s events, Fu Guanyue was relieved, a paper bird tapping on her window in the middle of the night would have been terrifying.
After replying to Fu Xi, she stared at her phone for a moment, then opened Fu Zhaozhao’s chat.
Tao Ning approached from behind, wrapping her arms around Fu Guanyue, her head resting on her shoulder.
It was the first time she had seen someone hold a phone like they were reading a book.
After a moment of comfortable silence, Fu Guanyue still sitting stiffly, Tao Ning asked, “What are you looking at? So engrossed.”
Fu Guanyue, snapping back to attention: “Nothing, just something I remembered.”
Tao Ning sat up: “What is it?”
Fu Guanyue turned to her, asking seriously, “Does your father know about this apartment?”
Old Madam Tao had bought this apartment years ago as a middle school graduation gift, but the original host had been too young to use it, and it remained empty after renovation.
Then, after her grandparents passed away, and Tao Rencheng divorced his wife, he finally had a chance to get rid of Tao Ning, excitedly remembering this apartment, reluctantly handing over the ownership documents, claiming he had bought it, having visited it once during construction.
So, of course, he knew about it, even the property management had his information.
Tao Ning leaned against the sofa, smiling: “He does, he brought me here, why do you ask?”
Fu Guanyue: “I was thinking, if he knows about this place, he might come and harass you, disturbing your peace, if you don’t have another place to live…”
Tao Ning understood, her smile widening: “So you’re inviting me to move in with you?”
Fu Guanyue, her hand itching to pinch Tao Ning’s cheek: “Yes, are you willing? This would sever your ties with your family.”
Fu Guanyue still didn’t fully understand Tao Ning’s relationship with her family, but judging by yesterday, there wasn’t much to be missed.
But everyone was different, and she couldn’t make decisions for Tao Ning.
However, if Tao Ning was foolish enough to return to the Tao family, Fu Guanyue would knock her unconscious and drag her away.
No normal person would agree to that marriage alliance, if she did, she must be possessed, needing immediate exorcism!
Tao Ning, unaware of Fu Guanyue’s thoughts, recalled the Tao Corporation: “The Tao family is quite wealthy, it’ll take a few years for them to go bankrupt, and if they do, I’ll have to rely on you for support.”
Something in her words made Fu Guanyue’s eyes light up, seriously considering the possibility.
Tao Ning, feigning distress, rested her chin on her hand: “But I’m not good at being a kept woman, if I become poor, I’ll have to hand out flyers on the streets to survive.”
Suddenly remembering something, she sighed dramatically: “What if your family finds out about my past, thinks I’m unworthy of you, and tries to force you to leave me, but you refuse, abandoning everything to be with me, and I have to support you by handing out flyers?”
This was getting ridiculous.
“Nonsense, I won’t let you hand out flyers,” Fu Guanyue said seriously. “Grandmother is very understanding, she won’t expel me from the Fu clan.”
And she had a contract with the Shanhe Brush, the Fu clan’s most prized possession, if she left, they would be the ones who suffered.
At worst, she would give up her position as the future head, her cultivation was enough, being free from family matters would be a relief.
But there were exceptions, and Tao Ning’s words seemed to make sense.
Fu Guanyue added, “Even if Grandmother disowns me, I’ve saved enough money, and if that’s not enough, I can ask my mother.”
Far away in Qizhou, Fu Niyun, feeding birds in the courtyard, sneezed: “Did I catch a cold?”
Fu Guanyue had already decided to take Tao Ning away, not on a whim, but after careful consideration, as long as Tao Ning agreed, they could leave immediately.
Tao Ning, struggling to suppress her laughter, finally burst out: “Alright, alright, I’m just kidding, I’ll go pack now, we can leave soon.”
“Eh? You agree?” Fu Guanyue had thought she would need more persuasion, her gaze following Tao Ning.
Tao Ning stood up, stretching: “Of course, there’s nothing for me here, you can rest for a bit, I’ll go pack.”
There wasn’t much to pack, just a few essentials, clothes could be bought anytime.
After Tao Ning changed and came out with her suitcase, Fu Guanyue was urged to go and change as well.
Fu Guanyue left, still slightly confused. She had read online that such things required careful planning and persuasion, but Tao Ning had agreed so readily.
She had learned to search online thanks to Fu Zhaozhao’s weekend tutoring.
After years of living like an antique, she had finally entered the digital age, much to Fu Zhaozhao’s delight.
Her little aunt, finally able to use a smartphone, it was all thanks to her, how touching.
She wondered what her aunt would search for online, she must be curious about everything.
Then Fu Zhaozhao was asked by her classmate, “Is that problem so difficult? It made you cry?”
Fu Zhaozhao, wiping away her tears, shook her head and muttered, “You don’t understand.”
Her classmate was alarmed: “I might not understand math, but I understand love! Fu Zhaozhao, are you heartbroken?”
Fu Zhaozhao: “…”
In her room, Fu Guanyue closed the webpage titled “How to convince your girlfriend to leave her abusive family,” grabbed her phone, and went out.
But Tao Ning wasn’t in the living room, she was standing outside, seemingly contemplating the doorbell.
Fu Guanyue approached: “I’m ready, we can go now. What are you looking at?”
Tao Ning shook her head: “Nothing, I have the keys, let’s go, I’ll have the cleaning service come later.”
They picked up their suitcases and went to the elevator.
The disrupted birthday banquet had infuriated Tao Rencheng, who couldn’t sleep.
And with him awake, Mrs. Tao also didn’t dare sleep, staying up with him all night.
“Why didn’t you stop her? I told you to stop her! The Feng family needs someone now, where am I supposed to find another girl for them?” The angrier he became, the more things he smashed, until there was nothing left on the table.
Mrs. Tao, always gentle and submissive before him, tried to comfort him.
But she thought, You couldn’t even stop her yourself, how could I, her stepmother?
But she wouldn’t say this to him, not yet.
As dawn approached, she said, “Honey, you haven’t slept all night, you’re exhausted, why not rest for a bit and think of a solution later? The company and our family need you.”
I’ve been up all night, you don’t want to sleep, but I do.
Normally, he would appreciate these words, but today, he exploded, pushing Mrs. Tao away and shouting, “You know the company and our family need me, yet you let her go! If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have been humiliated yesterday! You’re useless!”
Mrs. Tao was indignant: “What could I have done? Tao Ning has always been rebellious, do you think she would hesitate to push me away and embarrass you in public?”
Having tried everything, she finally lost her temper: “And she has always hated me, why would she listen to me? You’re her father!”
With that, she stormed out, tears streaming down her face, entering a random room.
“You…!” His usually docile wife had actually lost her temper, and Tao Rencheng, speechless, watched as she slammed the door shut.
“Rebellious! They’re all rebelling! Seeing my downfall, they’re all turning against me!” He couldn’t sit still any longer and went downstairs. “Butler, prepare the car, I’m going out.”
Butler: “Where to, Master?”
Tao Rencheng, frowning impatiently: “Emerald City.”
Butler: “Emerald City? Isn’t that where Miss…” lives?
He couldn’t finish his sentence, Tao Rencheng’s bloodshot eyes glaring at him.
“I’ll go get the driver.” The butler quickly left, and the other servants quietly continued cleaning, afraid of disturbing their enraged employer.
Master’s temper has been getting worse lately, better to stay quiet.
After Tao Rencheng left, his daughter opened the door to the room Mrs. Tao had entered, expecting to find her crying, but she was standing by the window, watching the car leave.
She wasn’t crying, her eyes not even red, and hearing the door open, she turned to her daughter, saying comfortingly, “It’s fine, your father is always like this, he’ll calm down soon.”
The drive from the Tao residence to Emerald City took about thirty minutes, but under Tao Rencheng’s constant urging, the driver arrived in just over twenty.
As Tao Ning had said, with his information registered, Tao Rencheng easily reached her apartment.
He brought a few bodyguards, determined to bring her back.
Tao Rencheng tilted his chin: “Knock.”
The unlucky driver chosen knocked on the door, but there was no response.
Tao Rencheng pushed him aside: “What’s the point of knocking? Use the doorbell!”
He pressed the doorbell repeatedly, the sound echoing: “Ding-dong! Ding-dong! Ding-dong!”
Tao Rencheng shouted, “Open the door! I know you’re here, open the door!”
The more he pressed, the heavier his hand felt, as if something was clinging to it, a heavy, icy weight on his arm.
A hand tapped his shoulder, and the driver’s trembling voice said, “Master, Master… look…”
Tao Rencheng, impatient: “What?! Don’t bother…”
He saw it, it wasn’t his imagination, there was something clinging to his arm!
A small, green-skinned, almost naked, hairy ghost baby grinned at him: “Hee hee!”
“…”
Tao Rencheng, his eyes meeting the ghost baby’s, felt a chill run down his spine, then he screamed, “Ahhh! A ghost!!!”
His eyes rolled back, and he fainted.
“Ahhh! A ghost! A ghost!!!”
The bodyguards and driver, also seeing the hairy ghost baby, ran away, leaving Tao Rencheng lying on the ground, his head hitting the floor with a thud.
