Chapter 204: There’s a Fox Here (Entertainment Circle) Part 17
“Why are you looking at me like that without saying anything?”
Yu Shuangjiang looked at her anxiously.
Tao Ning didn’t speak, silently conjuring a mirror of water, the bright moonlight illuminating the room, no need for a lamp.
The water mirror was as clear as a regular mirror, although it required emptying several bottles of mineral water, a demonstration of the law of conservation of mass.
Yu Shuangjiang, not dwelling on Tao Ning’s magical abilities, looked at her reflection.
Every detail of her face was clearly visible.
And on top of her head, she saw something that shouldn’t be there, her eyes widening slowly.
—A pair of cat ears.
Covered in soft fur, a mix of black and yellow, a familiar color combination, and Yu Shuangjiang grabbed the mirror, looking closer: “What is this?”
After a moment, she realized, Isn’t that Zhi Ma Juan the cat’s coloring?
“It looks like Sesame Roll’s ears, but the markings are slightly different.” She instinctively shook her head, the ears twitching along.
She shook her head too hard, the ears bumping against each other, a slight pain, then flattening against her head.
Like airplane ears, and they even hurt.
Yu Shuangjiang: “…” It’s over.
They were growing from her head, connected to her, a part of her.
She examined the mirror, trying to find the line separating the ears from her scalp, but there was none, they were attached.
Yu Shuangjiang was shocked, stunned, her eyes filling with tears as she looked at Tao Ning.
“How… how did I grow ears?”
Tao Ning had a theory, a seemingly impossible one, but the only explanation: “Although the car accident didn’t cause any physical damage, your soul was shaken, prone to leaving your body.”
“And when your soul leaves, it seeks a suitable vessel, and these past few days, I’ve been using a method to nourish your soul and guide it back…”
“Perhaps the vessel was too suitable, and with your anxiety tonight, you’ve manifested some feline traits.”
Yu Shuangjiang: “…”
Her mind seemed to buffer, unable to process this.
In short, Yu Shuangjiang was too suited to be a cat, having enjoyed her time as one, and tonight, her anxiety and shock had caused her to manifest cat ears upon returning to her body.
Tao Ning, seeing her silence, was trying to find a more comforting explanation when Yu Shuangjiang spoke.
Sniffling slightly, her eyes red-rimmed, she said, “This sounds like you’re praising my acting skills, that I was even convincing as a cat.”
Tao Ning, without hesitation: “You can interpret it that way.”
As long as it made Yu Shuangjiang feel better, she would agree to anything.
Yu Shuangjiang’s mind was a mess, and she said worriedly, “I have a flight later, and they check for hats at security, if they see my ears, will they take me to a lab for experiments?”
Seeing her fluffy tail swishing against the bed, clearly agitated, Tao Ning thought, She hasn’t even noticed the tail yet, which is even more obvious?
She couldn’t bear it, but she had to tell her: “Actually, it’s not just your ears you should be worried about, why don’t you look down?”
“…?” Yu Shuangjiang looked down, her vision blurry, seeing something fluffy and warm, long and swaying uncontrollably.
There was nothing safer than being under the covers, and now there was a strange, unknown thing beside her, her fear understandable.
“What is this?!” Her heart almost stopped, and she jumped, clinging to Tao Ning, her legs wrapped around her waist.
A person’s strength was amplified by fear, and Tao Ning almost fell off the bed.
She quickly caught Yu Shuangjiang, steadying herself to prevent them both from falling, which would be even more embarrassing.
“That’s your tail,” Tao Ning said, patting her back and gesturing for her to look. “Turn around and you’ll see it.”
Yu Shuangjiang’s tail, extending from her tailbone, continued to swish nervously, its fur bristling like a giant feather duster.
She buried her face in Tao Ning’s shoulder, her voice muffled: “Spare me, I don’t want to see it.”
She already knew what it was, a fluffy tail, the same colors as the ears.
She didn’t know when they had appeared, or when they would disappear, but she had to reschedule her flight and find a reasonable excuse.
If they didn’t disappear, she would have to hide them…
The slender figure clinging to Tao Ning, her face hidden, looked utterly dejected, her world seemingly crumbling.
Tao Ning, her hand on Yu Shuangjiang’s back, said carefully, “There’s a solution, but it’s only temporary…”
She opened her lips slightly, a faint white mist, a breath of fox spirit energy, escaping, taking the shape of a small fox and entering Yu Shuangjiang’s body.
Yu Shuangjiang: “What solution?”
A warmth spread through her body, and after a while, she felt lighter, the weight on her back gone.
Humans, accustomed to walking upright, didn’t need a tail for balance, and a tail of that size was hard to miss, now it was gone.
She touched her tailbone, the skin smooth, then her head, nothing there, the earlier sensation just an illusion.
But she knew it wasn’t, she could still remember the pain.
Yu Shuangjiang slowly sat back on the bed, looking up at Tao Ning: “…It’s gone?”
Tao Ning didn’t hide it from her: “Yes, but only temporarily.”
Hearing the word “temporarily” was Yu Shuangjiang’s greatest fear: “Is there a permanent solution? It might reappear.”
“There is, but it’s too dangerous, after repeatedly leaving your body, your soul has weakened, its connection to your body unstable,” Tao Ning said, bending down to tuck Yu Shuangjiang’s hair behind her ear.
“Forcibly removing these extra parts could be life-threatening, I don’t want to risk it.”
Yu Shuangjiang, about to say she was willing to endure the pain, froze, staring into Tao Ning’s eyes.
They weren’t cold or aloof, but filled with concern and tenderness.
Tao Ning: “So there’s only one option, I’ll use my demonic power to suppress it every time it happens, until your soul recovers, then we can completely remove these side effects.”
After a night of strange and terrifying experiences, repeatedly rescued, not killed or silenced as she had feared,
Yu Shuangjiang instinctively grabbed Tao Ning’s hand, which was resting on her cheek: “Wouldn’t that be too much trouble for you?”
Asking this, she felt a bit nervous, remembering Qi Xiaojia’s words—”Playing the victim card.”
She wasn’t sure if she was ready, her mind still telling her that this was a demon, a nine-tailed fox, not human.
Whether it even had human emotions was unknown, but it seemed to.
Whether out of gratitude or fear, she followed her heart, asking the question.
No regrets.
Tao Ning, however, looked at her, puzzled: “You don’t have to worry about troubling me.”
Noticing the beads of sweat on Yu Shuangjiang’s forehead, she looked for a tissue.
“You’re sweating, I’ll get you a tissue.”
Having adapted to human society, Tao Ning rarely relied on magic, preferring to do things herself.
Yu Shuangjiang, afraid she would disappear like smoke, grabbed her hand: “Wait! Don’t go, I’m not nervous!”
Tao Ning stopped, her hand held by Yu Shuangjiang, tilting her head: “Okay, you’re not nervous, I’m not leaving.”
But Yu Shuangjiang, having stopped her, didn’t know what to say.
She bit her lip, her voice tense: “I… I have something to tell you, it’s what I truly feel, I’m not lying.”
Tao Ning sat down on the edge of the bed, her gaze gentle and understanding: “Okay, I’m listening.”
“Although I think you’ve already noticed, I still want to tell you myself, I like you.” After saying this, Yu Shuangjiang didn’t dare look at Tao Ning.
Her eyes lowered, fixed on her hands, afraid Tao Ning would leave.
The actress, usually eloquent and confident before millions of people, now nervous from a simple confession.
She regretted choosing this moment, the timing was wrong.
Having acted so scared earlier, what if Tao Ning thought she was only interested in her demonic power?
Her overactive imagination, a screenwriter’s curse, conjured up all sorts of dramatic scenarios, even Tao Ning, heartbroken by her “deception,” leaving with her nine tails.
How tragic.
Yu Shuangjiang blurted out, “But I’m not just interested in your looks or your power, I realized my feelings during this time we spent together, although I wouldn’t be safe without your demonic energy, wait, what am I saying…”
The more she explained, the more suspicious it sounded.
Seeing her anxiety, Tao Ning pulled her into an embrace, her arms wrapping around her gently yet firmly, a comforting warmth.
Yu Shuangjiang’s voice trailed off, her face buried in Tao Ning’s shoulder, her hands covering her flushed cheeks.
Her racing heart gradually calmed down.
Yu Shuangjiang, you’ve faced so many cameras, what are you so nervous about?
“Don’t worry, I know, I understand,” Tao Ning said, “what you’re worried about won’t happen.”
Yu Shuangjiang, hearing this, paused, then wrapped her arms around Tao Ning’s neck, holding her close.
Tao Ning nuzzled against her cheek, kissing her softly.
The sky was starting to brighten, almost dawn, time for Qi Xiaojia to wake Yu Shuangjiang up for her flight.
If Tao Ning stayed any longer, she would have to find a plausible excuse.
So she said, “I’ll go back and wait for you, be careful on your way.”
Yu Shuangjiang, her emotions calmed, felt a pang of reluctance: “How are you getting back?”
Tao Ning glanced at the balcony, the moon setting, the sun about to rise: “The same way I came.”
This reminded Yu Shuangjiang of a question she had been wondering about all night: “Wouldn’t you be seen coming here like that?”
Tao Ning shook her head: “No, in my true form, I’m invisible unless I want to be seen.”
Clearly, Yu Shuangjiang was within the “allowed” range, having been in her room undetected for so long.
Walking towards the balcony, opening the sliding door, she had come here on a whim last night, and now it was time to leave.
As she stepped onto the balcony, in Yu Shuangjiang’s eyes, she was enveloped in a familiar white light, transforming into a nine-tailed fox.
Its fur white as snow, its eyes narrow and mesmerizing, it glanced back at Yu Shuangjiang before jumping onto the railing.
Seeing its graceful movements, Yu Shuangjiang’s heart skipped a beat, worried it would fall, either the railing collapsing under its weight, or the fox losing its balance.
But neither happened, Tao Ning wasn’t actually standing on the railing, her weight not on the thin metal.
As a nine-tailed fox, manipulating qi and walking on air was a simple matter.
“I’ll be going now, wait for me at home,” a voice, ethereal and otherworldly, echoed, then the fox jumped.
Yu Shuangjiang rushed to the edge, looking down: “Just like that?”
The white figure landed gracefully on the roof of another building, glanced back, then, after a few more leaps, disappeared into the morning mist.
Yu Shuangjiang, her hands on the railing, sighed enviously: “Instant travel, how convenient.”
It would take hours to fly back to City C, but Tao Ning would be home in minutes, a tempting thought for an actress who constantly traveled for work.
Returning to her room, Yu Shuangjiang patted her chest: “Dating a fox spirit, I’m truly amazing.”
It was still early, and she went back to bed, catching up on sleep.
Soon, her phone’s alarm rang, followed by a knock on the door and a voice: “Xiao Shuang Jie, are you awake? Time to get up and pack.”
At 8:00 AM, after they checked out, a housekeeper arrived to clean the suite.
Opening the door and entering, she started cleaning, changing the bedsheets first.
“What’s this?” She picked up a black and yellow hair, puzzled. “Cat hair? Such long cat hair?”
Hours later, the plane landed.
As soon as she was in the car, Yu Shuangjiang felt an itching sensation on her head and tailbone.
Not as painful as the first time, but the discomfort made her uneasy, afraid of sprouting cat ears and a tail in front of everyone.
Adjusting her hat, she couldn’t help but say, “I’m not going to the office today, I’m going home, Tu Jie, please inform the company, help me reschedule my appointments.”
She remembered Tao Ning saying the solution was only temporary, but she hadn’t expected it to wear off so quickly, barely half a day, the symptoms returning.
Tu Xue turned around: “Why so suddenly? Are you feeling unwell?”
Qi Xiaojia’s greatest fear now was hearing Yu Shuangjiang complain about feeling unwell, then suddenly collapsing, and she asked with concern, “Xiao Shuang Jie, do you want to go to the hospital?”
Yu Shuangjiang just wanted to be in a safe and enclosed space, and she shook her head, enduring the discomfort: “No, I’m just tired, I need to rest, I’ll be fine after a meal and some sleep.”
Tu Xue could only instruct the driver to take them to Yu Shuangjiang’s house.
They dropped her off, reminding her, “Your parents have already left, and there’s no one to take care of you, don’t hesitate to call us if you’re not feeling well.”
Yu Shuangjiang agreed to everything, her hands gripping the brim of her hat, a strange bulge visible beneath it.
But Tu Xue and Qi Xiaojia didn’t notice, ordering takeout for her before leaving.
“We’ll be going then, take care.”
“Okay, you guys also rest.” Yu Shuangjiang tried to keep her ears still, fortunately, her human ears didn’t disappear when the cat ears appeared, otherwise she would have given Tu Xue a heart attack.
As soon as the door closed, a calico tail emerged from beneath her long, beige coat, twitching slightly.
Yu Shuangjiang’s shoulders slumped, and she breathed a sigh of relief: “Finally, they’re gone.”
She tossed her hat onto the cabinet by the door, her cat ears twitching involuntarily.
Looking at her tail, which she hadn’t examined closely last night due to her panic, her only thought now was—I wonder how it feels.
Having seen Tao Ning’s nine tails, her single cat tail wasn’t so bad.
But it was still quite heavy, she didn’t know where to put it, it was affecting her balance.
She reached out to grab it, but she missed, her eyes widening in surprise.
“!”
The tail swished back and forth, as if mocking her inability to catch it, its owner unable to control it.
A cat’s tail had a mind of its own.
When Tao Ning arrived, following Yu Shuangjiang’s directions, she saw Yu Shuangjiang trying to catch her tail, the agile appendage dodging her grasp.
The more she tried, the more it swished, and Yu Shuangjiang chased it from the entrance to the balcony, where a small gap in the curtains offered a view from outside.
All her actions were witnessed by Tao Ning, standing outside.
Tao Ning: “…”
She’s truly suited to be a cat.
Because a normal person would grab their tail from the base, not just the tip.
