Chapter 208: There’s a Fox Here (Entertainment Circle) Part 21
Under the same sky, countless events unfolded, each person experiencing their own joys and sorrows.
A car accident occurred in the suburbs, the vehicle overturning into a pond. Half an hour later, a passing car reported it.
But strangely, the car, when retrieved, was empty, and this particular model didn’t have self-driving capabilities.
Even more unsettling, the drained pond revealed no body.
The driver had vanished without a trace.
Meanwhile, Yu Shuangjiang, hiding in a restroom stall, sent an urgent message to Tao Ning.
NoFish: [SOS!]
NoFish: [I think someone recognized me, and she called her friend.]
She quickly received a reply: [Wait for me, I’m coming.]
Tao Ning, pushing a shopping cart, looked up and changed direction, heading towards the restrooms.
Inside, Yu Shuangjiang held her phone, her ears straining to hear any sounds from outside.
She regretted not wearing her sunglasses, she had thought a mask, a t-shirt, and pants, a completely ordinary outfit, would be enough.
It was a weekday, and after studying the script for a week, she had agreed to watch a movie with Tao Ning, so they had come out to buy some snacks.
As a couple, grocery shopping was a normal activity, although Yu Shuangjiang’s profession made it slightly more complicated.
They would be watching the movie at home, going to a theater was too risky.
The mall wasn’t crowded, and after a while, Yu Shuangjiang went to the restroom to adjust her shoulder strap, asking Tao Ning to wait outside.
She hadn’t realized she had been recognized, entering a stall and fixing her strap, preparing to leave,
When her unusually sharp hearing caught a whispered “Yu Shuangjiang.”
She paused, listening intently.
She remembered two young women by the sinks when she entered, one applying makeup, the other about to leave, they had briefly made eye contact.
Could she have been recognized with just a glance?
Outside the stall, the two women were talking, comparing a photo on their phone to Yu Shuangjiang.
“Don’t her eyes look similar?” one said. “I’m good at recognizing people, I’ve never been wrong.”
The other said, “I’m telling you, Xiao Yue and I just saw Yu Shuangjiang, on the third floor, in the women’s restroom.”
A notification sound, the message sent.
Yu Shuangjiang, hearing this clearly, closed her eyes: “…It’s over, she really did recognize me.”
And she had even sent a message to her friend.
The restroom wasn’t large, running would only make her look suspicious, but if they caught her, it wouldn’t be easy to escape.
She didn’t know how many people they were with.
Just then, she heard the sound of a shopping cart approaching.
The two women looked up, startled.
A tall, slender figure entered, her skin fair, her features beautiful, gold-rimmed glasses adding a touch of sophistication.
Without a word, she walked straight towards the stall Yu Shuangjiang was in.
The two women almost called out to Tao Ning.
She’s been in there for a while.
Just then, the tall woman casually tucked her hair behind her ear and entered the stall.
As if no one was inside.
The two women by the sinks were stunned, She just walked in, wasn’t the door locked?
They looked around, wondering if they had the wrong stall.
Inside, Yu Shuangjiang, anxiously waiting, was suddenly met with a familiar scent, and before she could speak, her lips were captured.
Her eyes widened slightly as Tao Ning kissed her, a shared breath between them.
A few seconds later, they parted, and Tao Ning held up a mirror: “Now you don’t have to worry about being recognized.”
Yu Shuangjiang looked at her reflection, a subtle change in her features.
Her face was still hers, but somehow different, no longer recognizable as Yu Shuangjiang, just someone who looked similar.
Yu Shuangjiang was amazed, she hadn’t fully grasped Tao Ning’s fox spirit identity, as she seemed so human.
Her habits, her social interactions, everything normal.
But now, with just a kiss, she had changed her appearance, solving the problem.
Tao Ning opened the stall door and stepped out.
Yu Shuangjiang followed, her expression slightly unnatural without her mask.
But the two women, who had been so certain it was Yu Shuangjiang, were now stunned.
Recalling the eyes they had seen earlier, they thought, Wait, who is this?
She looked similar at first glance, but not really.
They walked out casually.
A few people, arriving later, glanced at them as they passed by, then continued towards the restroom.
After walking a short distance, they heard a voice: “Are you sure it was her? She doesn’t look like Yu Shuangjiang.”
“That’s not my goddess, Xiao Yue, you were mistaken.”
Pushing their shopping cart, they returned to the main area.
Yu Shuangjiang, relieved, enjoyed this rare opportunity to be in public without a mask.
A thought occurred to her, and she turned to Tao Ning: “I’ve been thinking, whether it was finding me under the tree, or the almost nonexistent injury at Chunqiu Building, you weren’t really trying to hide it from me, were you?”
Jiang Li Entertainment had reluctantly paid for the watch, Tao Ning accepting the compensation but refusing the apology dinner.
And it seemed Jiang Li had connected Tao Ning’s studio’s announcement with the incident, making Ji Ruoyi a target of ridicule.
Hoping to smooth things over, they had contacted Tao Ning’s studio,
But Zhang Ke had replied, “You’re overthinking it, why would we target your company? It was just a minor incident.”
This, however, only made Jiang Li more confused, unable to understand what they had done to offend her.
Tao Ning, pushing the shopping cart alongside her: “Mm-hmm, that’s right.”
Yu Shuangjiang thought, I knew it, I wasn’t mistaken, she did it intentionally.
And she had claimed to be bad at acting, effortlessly deceiving her, a real actress.
Wasn’t that talent?
Yu Shuangjiang casually placed a sugar-free drink in the cart: “Aren’t you afraid I’ll expose you? After all, we used to be rivals.”
Tao Ning chuckled softly, someone who asked such a question wouldn’t do that, they would be more worried about her true nature, afraid of being devoured by a demon.
Tao Ning teased, “That would be a good opportunity, you could find a powerful monk to subdue me, force me back into my true form, and banish me to the mountains… I would have truly misjudged you then.”
Her tone was incredibly sweet and innocent.
Yu Shuangjiang, without hesitation, shook her head, dismissing the possibility: “No way, if you’re banished, where would I find another you?”
They reached the snack aisle, and Tao Ning casually grabbed a bag of chips.
Using it as a cover, she leaned in and kissed Yu Shuangjiang.
A secret, stolen kiss, witnessed only by them.
Finally able to go out without a mask, a luxury usually only possible abroad, Yu Shuangjiang didn’t want to go home.
With her slightly altered appearance, still resembling the famous actress, she enjoyed herself.
Only returning when she was tired, but not to her own apartment.
Too many paparazzi lurking nearby, their noses like bloodhounds, Tao Ning’s place was safer.
Stepping out of the elevator, Yu Shuangjiang said, shaking her head, “First time being here as a human, it feels strangely nostalgic.”
Tao Ning: “…”
Fortunately, they lived on a private floor, otherwise, the neighbors would be terrified.
Carrying two bags of groceries, as she opened the door, a familiar, high-pitched meow came from inside: “Meow!!!”
“That’s Zhi Ma Juan, I recognize her voice,” Yu Shuangjiang said, her eyes lighting up.
She quickly opened the door, turning on the lights, and a familiar figure with a fluffy tail walked towards them.
Seeing the large, bushy tail, like a feather duster, Yu Shuangjiang remembered her own occasional tail, Tao Ning saying it would take time to completely remove it, that rushing it would be dangerous.
She had even said that forcing it could lead to assimilation by her demon core.
Yu Shuangjiang didn’t understand Tao Ning’s method, but since she said there was no rush, she could only wait.
“Zhi Ma Juan seems to have grown, it’s been a while, do you still remember me?” Yu Shuangjiang crouched down, extending her hand towards the cat.
Zhi Ma Juan, enthusiastic, lowered her tail, sniffed Yu Shuangjiang’s hand, rubbed against it, then raised her tail again.
Yu Shuangjiang’s heart melted, and she wanted to pick up the cat and hug it.
Noticing the two bags on the floor, Zhi Ma Juan the cat, curious,
Approached them, sniffing at the bags, her paws batting at them playfully.
Yu Shuangjiang, amused, took out the items one by one: “Here, smell this, is it up to your standards?”
When Tao Ning returned, having changed her shoes, she saw the two “quality inspectors,” one holding items from the bag, the other sniffing them, a perfect team.
Tao Ning took the other bag, filled with fresh produce, and went to the kitchen, the remaining bag containing snacks, not urgent.
“Wifey, wifey, don’t we look like a family of three? This is my daughter, Zhi Ma Juan.”
A warm body pressed against Tao Ning’s back, something soft and fluffy landing on her shoulder.
Before she could ask, the warm presence on her shoulder meowed.
Tao Ning turned around, amused by the sight.
Yu Shuangjiang had sprouted cat ears and a tail again, her arms holding Zhi Ma Juan, the red mole on her wrist matching the cat’s calico fur, they really did look like mother and daughter.
Yu Shuangjiang held the cat close to her face, tilting her head: “Don’t we look alike?”
Zhi Ma Juan the cat blinked, meowing in agreement.
“…” Tao Ning, after a moment of silence, took out her phone, snapped a photo, set it as her lock screen wallpaper, and said, “You do.”
Her movements were smooth and fluid, and before Yu Shuangjiang could react, her phone’s usual system wallpaper was replaced with a photo of her holding Zhi Ma Juan the cat.
Yu Shuangjiang looked at the photo, it was a good candid shot: “Send me a copy later.”
Tao Ning chuckled: “Okay.”
She had always known Yu Shuangjiang was optimistic, but she had underestimated her, her tail still present, and now she was even playing “family” with a cat.
Yu Shuangjiang put the cat down: “What are you doing? Let me help.”
She reached for the vegetables, then remembered she hadn’t washed her hands, a few cat hairs still clinging to them, and went to wash up.
The kitchen wasn’t small, and Zhi Ma Juan the cat, left behind, didn’t understand why humans liked to crowd together while working.
She paced around them, her tail swishing, meowing loudly, trying to get their attention.
But it was useless, and when she jumped onto the counter, she was shooed away.
Annoyed, she turned and attacked Tao Ning’s tail, which, however, was too agile, dodging her playful swipes, tiring her out.
Giving up, she went to the living room to play with her toys.
After dinner, Yu Shuangjiang found a movie: “I’ve been wanting to watch this, but I never had the time, let’s watch it together.”
But Yu Shuangjiang had overestimated herself, she wouldn’t even finish the movie.
The lights were dimmed, the room filled with a soft glow, the person she loved beside her, watching the movie together.
They weren’t even paying attention to the plot anymore.
Suddenly, their eyes met.
Even without the lights, they could see each other’s reflections in their eyes, a warm, intimate gaze, and instinctively, they leaned closer, their lips meeting.
The sounds of the movie couldn’t drown out their soft moans and their racing hearts, beating in unison.
The flickering light from the screen illuminated their intertwined figures, like shadows on a mountainside.
Their passion ignited, uncontrollable, Yu Shuangjiang pressed against the soft cushions of the recliner, her eyes like water, her arms around Tao Ning’s neck, her head tilted back.
Zhi Ma Juan the cat, waking up, stretched and yawned, looking around, the living room lights off, the figures who had been eating at the table gone.
She followed the sound of voices to a slightly ajar door, a muffled conversation, unlike her master’s voice.
But this was an unfamiliar room, she hadn’t been here before, and she hesitated.
Just as she was about to meow, calling out to them,
Her ears twitched, a familiar voice.
“Wait, not so hard, my tail feels strange.”
Tao Ning sat up, her eyes, without her glasses, glowing with demonic energy, her lips curving into a seductive smile as she whispered in Yu Shuangjiang’s ear, “But you like touching my tails, I also want to touch yours…”
A soft, whimpering protest: “That’s not the same, you have nine, I only have one, I can’t wrap them around you… I’m so hot…”
Tao Ning’s voice, apologetic: “I must be influencing you, making you go into heat.”
Yu Shuangjiang, her body burning, initially assuming it was because of the tail, her eyes widening, her chest heaving, her breath ragged, her ears flattening against her head, exclaimed, “What?!”
Outside, Zhi Ma Juan the cat, certain there were people inside, pawed at the gap under the door, widening it slightly.
She pushed her head through, about to squeeze inside, when a white shadow appeared.
“Meow!” Her fur bristling, she instinctively hissed at the white figure.
But the fox, ignoring her, closed the door with its paw.
A click, and Zhi Ma Juan’s view was blocked.
Zhi Ma Juan the cat, about to meow: “…?”
