Chapter 99: I Love Slacking Off
The ship activated, flying away from Caesar Star. The White Ravens were anxious but didn’t dare act rashly with their leader on board.
Before the black ship could break through the defenses and escape, the leader’s confidant roared, “What are you waiting for? Chase after them!”
As if awakened from a dream, everyone scrambled into the nearest ships.
A ship, painted black with a faint raven totem in the corner, took the lead, its speed astonishing.
Soon, several other ships followed, swaying slightly from the abrupt takeoff before stabilizing, pursuing the ship ahead like deep-sea sharks, refusing to let go.
But the leading ship was always just out of reach, seemingly close one moment and far away the next, maintaining a certain distance.
Their attempts to shoot it down were thwarted by its speed and the hostage on board.
The pursuing confidant gritted his teeth. He had randomly chosen someone, not even seeing their face clearly.
Judging by their timid appearance, he had assumed their hands wouldn’t even be steady on the controls, but unexpectedly, they were a skilled pilot, almost outmaneuvering them.
But now wasn’t the time to question whose subordinate this person was and why they hadn’t been promoted. The White Raven leader was their backbone, the key to their survival.
If anything happened to him, they would be vulnerable to attacks from other organizations, and the Federation’s extermination efforts… the consequences were unimaginable.
In reality, the situation inside the ship wasn’t what the confidant imagined. The timid person wasn’t being forced to pilot at gunpoint, and the person piloting wasn’t even them.
What surprised the confidant even more was that the pilot who was outmaneuvering them was actually flying a ship for the first time.
With technological advancements, not only had technology rapidly developed, but humans were also different from before. Increased lifespans were just a minor detail; the key was the evolution of psychic power.
Almost everyone had psychic power, using it to connect with electronic devices, issuing commands directly from their brains, saving a lot of time on manual operation.
From small, everyday smart devices and learning chips, to large spaceships and mechas, everything was connected to psychic power, deeply integrated into people’s lives.
It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that losing psychic power meant being completely disconnected from society.
This was why An He and the others, assuming Zang Yuzhu had lost her psychic power, looked at her with pity and regret, always hesitating to mention it directly.
Regarding psychic power, the societal view was that those without it were like apes, no longer considered human.
The Ninth Star System was practically a hub for those without psychic power, which was one of the reasons they looked down on it and didn’t bother to liberate it.
Tao Ning observed all this but didn’t bother explaining.
She told her adoptive parents that she had asked someone to log into her account. Gu Yuan, with his own secrets, wouldn’t ask around about who helped her, maintaining his image.
However, Tao Ning suspected Gu Yuan didn’t believe she had truly lost her psychic power, but simply thought it didn’t matter since she was going to die anyway.
Once a person died, everything would vanish without a trace.
People without psychic power still existed. Being disconnected from society didn’t equate to death. In the Federation’s eyes, it was a disease, medically known as “mind-blindness.”
Those with mind-blindness were considered useless to society, mostly found in the mixed zones of less developed star systems, where the lack of advanced technology made their condition less of a hindrance.
There was only one route out of Caesar Star, a route known only to the White Ravens. Non-members wouldn’t be able to navigate it.
Entering the cockpit, Tao Ning looked around, unfamiliar with all the buttons and controls, feeling dizzy. Under the White Raven leader’s puzzled gaze, she placed her hand on the light blue control panel and closed her eyes.
“This will do.”
The next moment, the ship roared to life, the leader’s puzzled expression turning to shock.
She had directly connected her psychic power to the ship’s central control, piloting the massive vessel along the designated route.
The ship responded to her thoughts with surprising agility, appearing to the pursuers like a slippery eel, impossible to catch.
Very few people, even within the White Ravens, let alone the entire Federation, could achieve this.
The leader felt a surge of hatred, cursing Tu Xin for bringing back this person who had caused him so much trouble.
With this unpredictable person, he wasn’t sure if he would survive.
Someone walked over, not looking at Tao Ning, who had her back to them, but giving the leader a curious look.
The leader frantically winked at them, signaling them to attack the person in front, but they remained unmoved, still observing him with curiosity.
After a while, they reached out and poked the leader’s shoulder, asking in wonder, “How did you do that? He’s completely still.”
The leader’s eye twitched. The person with the plain, timid face had a surprisingly pleasant voice, completely incongruous with their appearance.
Hearing this voice, he understood. This unfamiliar subordinate wasn’t a subordinate at all, but a woman.
Tao Ning turned around to look at the motionless figure, who maintained the same posture, winking repeatedly, looking quite comical.
Tao Ning didn’t laugh, but instead said, “This? It’s related to ancient Earth. Have you heard of pressure point techniques?”
520 knew the cunning fox was spinning tales again, thinking: [Even in ancient Earth, no one could immobilize another person with pressure points.]
Glancing at Callista, 520 thought again: [But there were no real mermaids in ancient Earth either, so maybe this isn’t so strange?]
But it was indeed curious how Tao Ning did it, actually succeeding with pressure point techniques in this world without internal energy or spiritual power.
Callista, wearing a disguise, shook her head, saying honestly, “Never heard of it.”
Ancient Earth was a distant past, most of its history lost to time, with very few records remaining.
The White Raven leader also rolled his eyes. He stood there stiffly, unable to move no matter how hard he tried.
Immobilized without any threats or restraints, it showed how powerful this pressure point technique was.
Another thing he couldn’t understand was how the soft string wrapped around her hands could become a deadly weapon.
Tao Ning, of course, had no intention of sharing her secrets. She beckoned Callista over: “Come here, let me tell you.”
Callista walked over, tilting her ear towards Tao Ning’s mouth, who whispered the method.
After a while, Callista, surprisingly on the same wavelength as 520, thought: You’ve truly mastered our unique Mermaid abilities.
Mermaids were naturally gifted with enchanting voices, which was actually achieved by infusing their voices with psychic power. Callista, initially distrustful of Tao Ning, had used this technique on her several times to try and extract information.
Unexpectedly, not only was Tao Ning unaffected, but she also figured out how it worked, and wasn’t satisfied with just that.
She occasionally practiced it, and now she had even come up with the idea of imbuing zither strings with psychic power, and just now, she had even used it for… pressure point techniques.
Callista looked at her with a complicated expression, as if saying: How could you use psychic power so recklessly? Aren’t you afraid of developing mind-blindness?
The two whispered to each other, and the White Raven leader, even with his ears perked up like a rabbit’s, couldn’t hear a word, only seeing Callista giving Tao Ning a complicated look.
However, neither of them paid him any attention. Tao Ning asked, “I was planning to have them hand you over, but you came here yourself.”
The crowd had been chaotic, but she had spotted this ordinary-looking middle-aged man immediately, simply because he winked at her.
With such a face, making such a lively and playful expression, the scene… although a bit strange, Tao Ning recognized it as Callista.
“The water quality on Caesar Star is poor, I felt uncomfortable and didn’t want to wait any longer, so I came over.” Callista shrugged. “He’s too weak, he answered all my questions.”
Tao Ning didn’t need further explanation. She could guess who it was. These people treated Callista like a fish on a chopping block, unaware that she considered them a joke.
According to the world line records, Callista had escaped from the heavily guarded Federation Research Institute, so the White Ravens were nothing in comparison, just a paper cage.
Tao Ning said, “And then you…”
Callista nodded: “Yes, I asked him if he had any suitable clothes for going outside, and he mentioned disguise tools.”
Following his words, Callista found a bunch of tools, including this disguise mask.
Dr. Yi was also on the Federation’s most wanted list, a criminal who could be killed on sight. The Federation had abolished the death penalty, so this punishment was quite severe.
Caesar Star, though small, was his playground, but it was still no match for the vast galaxy. Therefore, Dr. Yi needed disguises to move around freely, otherwise he would have been captured by the Federation long ago.
He had even considered mind-blindness. Compared to chips that altered one’s appearance, he preferred primitive disguises like masks.
Because mind-blindness wasn’t affected by chips, disguise chips were like the emperor’s new clothes to them.
Dr. Yi, controlled by Callista, stared with wide, frightened eyes, completely unlike his usual composed demeanor, his mouth involuntarily answering every question.
Naturally, he also answered Callista’s questions about how to use these tools.
Tao Ning asked, “Besides this, did you take anything else?”
Callista looked puzzled: “You mean those knives? They don’t seem as sharp as my claws, why would I need them?”
Although Callista was intelligent, she still didn’t fully understand human rules. Thinking of disguising her appearance was already quite thoughtful for a creature raised in the ocean.
It was normal for her to overlook something like identity credentials.
Tao Ning suddenly thought of a suitable landing location. She said, “Indeed, those weapons would be a burden for you.”
Callista said, “I didn’t come ashore on a whim, I thought it through.”
Just because she didn’t know how to express herself didn’t mean she didn’t understand.
Being able to become the leader of her tribe as an orphan meant she wasn’t just a brute who only knew how to fight.
Back then, with the Federation intentionally concealing the information, the White Ravens would never have imagined that the Mermaid could transform her tail into legs and escape.
Thinking of this, Callista considered herself a genius for not revealing her ability to walk on land.
Tao Ning gave her two thumbs up: “You’re amazing.”
“Of course.” Callista’s pride was evident, but in the White Raven leader’s eyes, it was incredibly irritating.
With such a timid face, easily lost in a crowd, yet making such an expression, not a bit cute, but rather disgusting.
Tao Ning seemed to sense something and turned around, as if just remembering him: “I almost forgot about you.”
As she spoke, the ship suddenly veered sharply, dodging an attack.
The pursuing confidant was furious that the attack missed.
But the leader he was desperately trying to rescue wasn’t so lucky. He had been standing stiffly like a statue, and the force of the ship’s sudden maneuver sent him tumbling to the ground, crashing hard against the bulkhead.
His vision went black, unaware of the blood flowing from his head, already unconscious.
Tao Ning, who seemed to be chatting and laughing casually, was actually multitasking, piloting the ship, talking to Callista, and keeping an eye on the White Raven leader.
Seeing him pass out, she felt relieved, finding a capsule on board, throwing him inside, and preparing to launch him as a distraction.
Keeping him would only attract his subordinates’ pursuit. Since they were about to leave Caesar Star’s territory, it was better to use him as a roadblock.
Callista, feeling stuffy, removed her disguise, her black curly hair cascading down, dyed with a temporary color spray.
Seeing Tao Ning put the leader into the capsule, she vaguely understood what she was planning and asked, “Are you going to return him?”
Callista didn’t fully understand human nature, but she knew Tao Ning wouldn’t easily let go of something she had obtained, exploiting it to the fullest.
For example, now, the ship controlled by Tao Ning seemed to be surrounded, but she might have a plan to escape with the leader and disappear completely.
Tao Ning closed the capsule door: “He’s useless now.”
“Ninth Brother, the ship ahead is slowing down!”
“Hurry up, have everyone increase speed and surround them! We must intercept them!”
“But the leader is still inside…”
Ninth Brother interrupted him sharply, “If we don’t intercept them, the leader will really die!”
Bandits themselves didn’t believe in keeping promises, so they assumed the worst of others, certain Tao Ning wouldn’t honor her word.
Moreover, judging by the ship’s speed, it didn’t seem like she intended to.
If Tao Ning hadn’t released the leader after leaving Caesar Star’s territory, the confidant wouldn’t be so anxious to attack.
However, everyone closely watching the black ship noticed that not only was it slowing down, but it had also adjusted its cannons, seemingly preparing to attack its pursuers.
A subordinate exclaimed in shock, “No one loaded the ammunition, what is she going to use to fight back?”
Despite their words, they became wary.
Ninth Brother also said, “Everyone, be on alert!”
