The Retired [Armed Merchant]’s Laid-back Journey Across the Continent 49

Chapter 49: The Rip-off Artist is Surprised by the Room.

“Welcome, Vottark-sama.”

I felt a little awkward as the male concierge bowed deeply, and I voiced a small question.

“Do you know who we are?”

“Of course.”

The concierge smiled.

Should I be impressed by the first-class service, or should I be scared that they know who I am? It’s hard to decide.

“Your room is ready. If you are going out immediately, shall we just carry your luggage?”

“I want to see the room!”

“Very well.”

The concierge nodded at Al’s words and gave a small glance, and a female staff member immediately stepped forward.

She was probably around twenty. Not as old as me, but not as young as Al.

And yet, she was a person with rather refined movements.

“This is Canone, who will be in charge of Vottark-sama. She is your dedicated staff, so please let her know if you need anything.”

“My name is Canone. I will show you to your room immediately.”

What she pointed to was a large pillar a little away from the reception.

I understood immediately, but Al tilted her head slightly and looked up at me with a little anxiety.

She has such a cute reaction. I want to hug her right now.

“It’s an elevator.”

“Um, I’ve heard of it.”

“Well, they’re usually only in dungeons. It’s my first time seeing one in a human living area.”

The hotel staff smiled at our exchange.

“As expected of Vottark-sama, you have a discerning eye. This elevator is one of only three in the Republic of Ravanant.”

“Is it an excavated item from a dungeon?”

“This one was reproduced by a technician. It’s powered by a water wheel that uses the abundant water of Morcomisky.”

Al and I both let out a small gasp of admiration at Canone’s words.

Usually, elevators are found in dungeons and are powered by mana or some unknown force.

To solve that with technology… as expected of the advanced country of the Republic of Ravanant, I’m impressed.

“Then, this way please.”

Canone touched a button on the wall while guiding us to the arrived elevator.

“Oh… I’m a little nervous.”

“It’s your first time, Al.”

“Have you been on one, Rody-san?”

“Yeah. They’re quite common in dungeons. Though not this luxurious.”

The interior of the elevator was luxurious, from the wallpaper to the decorations.

It had the feel of a dedicated carriage for royalty.

“This elevator is exclusively for the top floor of this hotel, the royal suite.”

“That’s amazing.”

Although I answered calmly, I was quite panicked inside.

The royal suite of the best hotel in one of the world’s top resort areas… it’s too much for me.

Al and I are not royalty or anything, just ordinary commoner travelers.

“Whoa, it’s a little tingly.”

“It’s surprising if you’re not used to it. It took me a while to get used to it too.”

“You too, Canone-san?”

“Yes. And please rest assured, many people have the same reaction as your wife.”

Canone smiled at the slightly embarrassed Al.

I see, she’s a professional.

Not too stiff, not too casual. She maintains a sense of distance while also having the flexibility to be close to the customer.

“We have arrived.”

At the same time as Canone’s words, the elevator doors opened.

At that moment, I heard a small gasp escape from Al’s mouth.

Actually, my mouth was half-open too.

“This is… amazing…”

“…Yes.”

From this room, which was lavishly decorated with expensive and precious transparent glass, you could see the cityscape of Morcomisky and the lake, and the furnishings were all elegant and did not obstruct the view.

This is the work of someone who completely understands what is important in this place.

“I’m glad you like it.”

“I’m truly amazed. As a former armed merchant, I’ve seen many sights in dungeons, but this is the first time I’ve seen a view like this.”

Canone smiled slightly at my words and bowed her head.

“My grandfather would be happy to hear you say that.”

“Your grandfather?”

“The designer of this room is my grandfather. He said that the view of Morcomisky is better than any treasure.”

“I have no doubt.”

I think I understand.

This view is valuable.

Al is just staring out the window with her mouth half-open.

“Wow… this is amazing.”

“Yeah. I have to thank His Excellency the President.”

“Are you starting to fall for it?”

“When they do this much, it feels more like a debt than a loan.”

Al and I laughed lightly and stood next to each other.

The cityscape spreading out below, the beautifully shining lake, and the mountains in the distance.

The perfectly composed scenery, like a painting, seemed like a treasure, just as Canone’s grandfather had said.

“Then I will take my leave. If you need anything, please ring this bell.”

Canone pointed to a small silver bell on a stand next to the elevator and got into the elevator.

“Ah, Canone-san.”

“Yes, what is it?”

“I’m thinking of doing some light sightseeing, do you have any recommendations?”

After a short pause at my words, Canone opened her mouth.

“There are many things… but I suppose swimming in the lake is the best. It’s an activity that most of our guests who visit Morcomisky enjoy.”

“I see, not bad.”

“If you are tired from your journey, there are also shopping and hair salons on the main street, and I also recommend relaxing in your room. If you need any food or drinks, please let me know.”

Al, who had been nodding at Canone’s words, tilted her head slightly.

“What’s ‘lake swimming’?”

“It means exactly what it says. You swim in Lake Morcomisky. I’m sure it will feel good.”

“Swim…?”

I couldn’t help but let out a small “Ah” at Al’s reaction.

That’s right. Al has never been outside the Adventurer City of Alanis.

In other words, she has experience with bathing, but not with swimming.

“Alright, let’s go to the lake.”

“Yes! I’m so excited!”

Canone smiled slightly at our excitement and bowed her head.

“Understood. I will call the person in charge, so please wait a moment.”

"The 'Rip-off' business retires today! We're setting off on a journey aboard the Transcontinental Railway!" "You got it, boss!"

Armed Merchant—a term that refers, quite literally, to a peddler who is armed.

As both merchants and adventurers, they appear in various locations, weighing needs and business opportunities against the risks involved.

Sometimes in unexplored territories, other times deep within a labyrinth, and ultimately, even on the desolate Demon Continent.

One such Armed Merchant... a man known in the Adventure City Alanis as the "Rip-off Shop," has disappeared.

Rumored to be "avaricious, wicked, and devoid of human warmth," he was the city’s biggest pariah. His name is Rodi.

For the last ten years, he was a famous Armed Merchant in the Adventure City, but one day, he simply stopped showing up.

While whispers of his imprisonment or death circulated, Rodi himself had boarded the "Transcontinental Railway," heading for the frontier pioneer city of Sardin on the western edge of the continent.

The reason being, after a certain incident, he was handed a business suspension order by the Alanis Merchant Guild... and he decided to use that opportunity to retire from the dangerous life of an Armed Merchant.

The stepsister he needed to provide for had become independent. The Adventure City, where his own bad reputation ran rampant, was an uncomfortable place to live, and if he stayed, he might only get in his stepsister's way—thinking this, Rodi decided to commit to the grand journey he had always longed for as a way of settling into retirement.

However, his disappearance was slowly causing ripples throughout Alanis.

Rodi, of the so-called "Rip-off Firm," had actually been functioning as a safety net, solving the labyrinth's various dangers in exchange for coin.

There was no other Armed Merchant like Rodi who would appear in the labyrinth's depths... the most dangerous territories. His absence was gradually turning into a source of major anxiety within the Adventure City Alanis.

Having lost both their supply lines and their safe zones in the deep levels, the adventurers gradually became passive, and the production of labyrinth resources—the lifeline of the Alanis economy—began to drop significantly.

Viewing the situation gravely, the Alanis administration arrived at a single answer: to announce the reinstatement of Rodi's business rights.

Even though the man himself remained nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile, Rodi, the former proprietor of the "Rip-off Firm," was using his natural skills and experience to solve little troubles and problems at every stop on his railway journey.

The Alanis administration and Merchant Guild are moving to bring him back.

Just what will happen to Rodi’s retired slow-life journey?

Part Merchant, part Adventurer. A Warrior and a Mage, an Alchemist and a Thief.

The story of an all-powerful, peerless, retired Armed Merchant aiming for his ideal retired slow life... begins now!
