I’m writing this the day before the scheduled conclusion.

A lot happened during the serialization… the updates stopped for over a year, and there was a time when this work seemed quite dead. Thinking that it will now be successfully concluded fills me with relief, and also a sense of sadness.

This work began with a ‘title stock.’

As the name suggests, it’s just a memo where I jot down title-like phrases. Sometimes, one of those phrases inspires me to write a scene, and I turn it into text.

It’s similar to rough sketches or idea sketches in illustration.

First, there was the title…

The second thing I wrote was the confession scene (end of Volume 3).

The third thing I wrote was the horseback riding scene (the one where she’s pushed into the mud puddle in Volume 2).

I clearly like to write the exciting scenes first.

――I wanted to see how these two would get to that point.

These two, who didn’t even have names yet… I, more than anyone, wanted to read the story of how they met, how they were tossed about by fate, how they accumulated small, private events, and how their feelings for each other grew.

But there were large gaps.

Perhaps a national historian, tasked with compiling a history from before written records, would feel this way.

I want to tell the client, “I’ll kill you right now and etch your name into history,” such dangerous thoughts.

Even so, the reason I was able to finish it is because of readers like you, who are reading this now.
