Chapter 17: Part 3

Ye Can walked up to Lin Zixi, grabbed her arm, and asked with a sullen face, “What are you doing?”

Lin Zixi looked at her in complete bafflement. “Watching the scene you just shot. What’s wrong?” Upon hearing this, Ye Can’s expression softened a bit. She pulled Lin Zixi to her side and said, “My arm hurts, and I need to change out of these clothes.”

Lin Zixi glanced at the costume on her body. “Then go change and head to the hospital. Do you know how to get to that dressing room from earlier? If not, have Tong Lin take you.”

Ye Can stared at her in utter disbelief. “You’re not going to take care of me? What are you going to do? What are you going to do if you’re not staying with me?”

The pretty kid’s face was full of If you don’t look after me, I’m going to throw a fit. Lin Zixi sighed inwardly—This can’t go on. She let go of Ye Can’s hand and said gently but firmly, “Ye Can, you can change your clothes yourself. I have things to take care of and won’t be able to play with you later.”

Seeing her like this, Ye Can was fuming, ready to explode. She stared intently at Lin Zixi, as if trying to see through her calm facade to the emotions underneath. Lin Zixi’s expression remained steady. “Ye Can, it’s getting dark. You should head home soon.”

Ye Can sneered. “Whether I go home or not is none of your business. I’m not going.” Hmph, this heartless woman. I went through hell and back and didn’t even get a single word of praise.

Since there was no praise, no comfort, why should she listen to Lin Zixi? Besides, she wasn’t the type of ruler who listened to anyone anyway.

Ye Can let go of Lin Zixi and turned toward Tong Lin. As she passed by Tong Lin’s tall frame, she shook her head playfully and called out, “Keep an eye on her. Don’t let anything happen to her. If something happens to her, I’ll die right in front of you.”

Tong Lin’s wooden, cold face finally showed a flicker of conflict. “But…”

Ye Can clicked her tongue lightly. “You can talk, huh? Then listen carefully. I want you guarding her—don’t follow me.” Ye Can looked up, giving Tong Lin a cold stare laced with warning.

Tong Lin was obedient, loyal, and smart. Ye Shen had assigned her to Ye Can precisely because she could handle sudden situations. Now, in Ye Can’s eyes, Lin Zixi was undoubtedly important. From her actions earlier, Tong Lin figured it was best to follow Ye Can’s orders.

She nodded and, unusually, added, “If anything happens, contact me.”

Ye Can waved her hand dismissively. “Don’t call me Miss. Call me Your Majesty.” This was the dignity befitting a ruler of a nation—she couldn’t lose face.

Ye Can quickly left the filming location and ran back to the earlier dressing room to change into her own clothes. That costume was expensive; when the two had left earlier, Lin Zixi had even reminded Lin Lin to pack it away properly for Ye Can.

When Ye Can entered the dressing room, Lin Lin recognized her and eagerly handed over the clothes like a bootlicker. Lin Lin had a soft, cute look that made her very likable. Ye Can took a liking to her and, while stripping off the costume, asked, “I asked you before what gift you wanted. Have you decided? If you have, I’ll have someone send it over.”

Lin Lin shook her head vigorously. “No need, no need—you’re too generous.” Seeing that Ye Can had been struggling with the belt for a while, she tentatively offered, “Is this costume hard to take off? Want some help?”

Ye Can shook her head. “No need, no need.”

Lin Lin was enthusiastic and wanted to help. “Let me do it anyway.” But as soon as she got close, Ye Can jumped back in fright, retreating hastily. One hand clutched the belt, the other stopping Lin Lin’s approach. “No, don’t come over.”

Her face clearly screamed rejection, boldly proclaiming Don’t come near me. Lin Lin looked at her handsome little face and remembered how she’d asked Teacher Lin for help earlier. Her gossip itch burned fiercely. “Looks like you only want Teacher Lin’s help, huh? What’s your relationship with Teacher Lin?”

Ye Can kept her head down, fumbling with the belt. “Nothing special. She’s my favorite consort.”

Lin Lin burst out laughing. “You like Teacher Lin? Are you chasing her or something?”

Ye Can finally wrestled the belt open clumsily. She shed the outer robe and inner lining, grabbing her own clothes to change into. “I don’t like her.” Then she paused, frowning. “Wait, no—that’s not right. I do like her. But this whole ‘chasing’ thing? No need for that.”

She shot Lin Lin a dissatisfied look. “Why do you talk so much and ask about everything?”

Lin Lin had gotten the gossip she wanted and shook her head frantically. “Okay, okay, I won’t ask. I won’t ask.”

Ye Can glanced at her. “Still want the gift? If not, I’m leaving.”

Lin Lin replied in a rush. “No, no—go ahead, go ahead.”

She rarely encountered someone who refused her gifts so straightforwardly. Usually, people accepted them trembling in fear, some even quaking in their boots, tears streaming down their faces.

Thinking of this, Ye Can raised an eyebrow, her impression of Lin Lin improving. She waved goodbye to Lin Lin.

Out of the dressing room, Ye Can wandered aimlessly around the crew. She was strikingly beautiful with an outstanding aura, and with the morning’s events having spread quietly through the set, those who didn’t know her background assumed she was some rich investor’s daughter.

With that assumed status, no one dared approach her or get too familiar.

Ye Can strolled around, spending quite some time and finally getting a feel for the layout.

Know the enemy and yourself, and you’ll win every battle. Now, under the Immoral God’s threat, she had to protect Lin Zixi here for a month. She needed to familiarize herself with the surroundings so she could rush over if Lin Zixi was in trouble.

As Ye Can passed a wall corridor in Film City, she spotted a long line. She glanced over and saw a sign recruiting extras, then turned to leave.

But at that moment, the cold, icy voice in her mind rang out again: “Run extra roles one thousand times: Task execution begins. Complete within two months.”

Ye Can ignored it and kept walking.

The cold electronic voice emphasized, “Conditions for task completion nearby. Join extras immediately to complete task.”

Ye Can clutched her head, bargaining with the electronic voice. “I already did what you asked earlier. Can’t you chill for a bit? Lin Zixi’s not even here—why should I…”

But the voice droned on relentlessly: “Join extras immediately to complete task. Join extras immediately to complete task.”

Ye Can thought, Gods don’t listen to mortals’ pleas—they’re stubborn, treating everyone like toys. But this god seems to favor me as her toy a little too much. If she doesn’t mess with me one day, she’ll die.

Ye Can sighed, blowing her bangs out of her face, and joined the long line.

She didn’t know how long she waited until the sun hung low in the west, and it was finally her turn.

The staffer behind the long table, head down and emotionless, said, “ID card.”

Ye Can’s face darkened. She replied coldly, “Don’t have one!” She’d only brought her phone—who carries ID when just heading out, not leaving the city?

The staffer said flatly, “Next!”

Ye Can panicked and slammed her palm on the table, snarling fiercely, “No ID, so what? Can’t do it without one?”

Bang! The long table under her palm shattered into pieces and collapsed with a crash. Splinters flew, papers scattered wildly. The staffer looked up in horror at Ye Can’s radiant face, utterly shocked.

What kind of monster just showed up?
