Chapter 51: Ten

Lin Zixi heard Ye Can’s self-muttered words and let out a soft sigh. If Ye Shen were here right now and heard that, she’d probably be so pissed she’d spit blood again, she thought.

Lin Zixi didn’t want to dwell on the matter with Ye Can. Once the night snacks arrived, she grabbed a huge skewer of grilled meat and placed it in front of Ye Can. “Eat up quick. Finish and we’ll head back—no more talking.”

Words like that were better left unsaid in the future. Ye Can picked up the skewer, let out an “oh,” and started munching away contentedly.

She ate fast and furiously, as if afraid Tong Lin might snatch it from her, polishing off one serving after another in record time. By the time the shop brought out the final round of barbecue, Ye Can had cleared the table in just a few minutes.

After finishing, Ye Can sipped a steaming cup of barley tea, patted her little belly, and shot Tong Lin a smug, satisfied look.

Seeing Ye Can’s gloating little expression, Lin Zixi was utterly amused yet exasperated. Back when Tong Lin was still officially Ye Can’s bodyguard, Lin Zixi had never seen Ye Can treat her so stingily.

But that was Ye Can—someone who drew sharp lines between friend and foe. Once someone was branded an outsider, she turned picky and calculating.

Lin Zixi watched as Ye Can set down her tea cup with a satisfied sigh, then said helplessly, “Full yet? If you’re stuffed, let’s go.”

Ye Can nodded, beaming. “Stuffed. Let’s head out.”

As she spoke, she took Lin Zixi’s hand and stood, heading for the exit. When they reached the gates of Night Snack City, Ye Can rubbed her belly and frowned. Lin Zixi found it funny. “Did you overeat?”

Ye Can was stubborn. “Who overate? I didn’t.”

Lin Zixi could see right through her bravado and sighed. “And you say you didn’t. If you couldn’t finish it all, you shouldn’t have. Sharing some with Tong Lin wouldn’t kill you.”

Ye Can bristled. “That was bought with your money—for me. No way I’m sharing with anyone. Nobody gets food from my mouth, not even if you say it’s okay.”

Lin Zixi was speechless at her food-guarding antics. Are you a dog or something? So domineering you won’t even let anyone near your mouth. What a personality.

Though her mind was full of snark, facing this kid, Lin Zixi coaxed gently, “But you can’t eat that much. Why bother? No more of this next time.”

Ye Can opened her mouth to argue, but Lin Zixi pointed at her warningly. “I said no, and that’s final. No objections. Do you listen to me or not?”

As the saying went, the one who eats your food grows soft in the mouth, the one who takes your hand grows short of arm. Right now, living off Lin Zixi like a pampered freeloader, Ye Can had no comeback. She huffed coldly, shot an arrogant glance at the innocent Tong Lin, and grumbled, “Fine, I listen. Anyway, now that you have another dog, you don’t dote on me anymore.”

Tong Lin, walking beside them, was amused. She adjusted her sunglasses, her face expressionless as she thought, Number Two, you’re the little dog here. I’m not.

Tong Lin had zero interest in vying for affection with this tsundere, temperamental pup of a wife.

Faced with Ye Can’s occasional childish whims, Lin Zixi felt utterly helpless. She reached out, grabbed Ye Can’s hand, and pulled her toward the brightly lit streets. “Enough of that nonsense. There’s a pharmacy up ahead. We’ll get you some digestive tablets first.” Ye Can had a shoot tomorrow morning—if she let her stomachache ruin her night, she’d stay up late and tank her performance.

Ye Can went “oh” and followed Lin Zixi to the pharmacy.

It was nearly 2 a.m. now, and the area around Film City had grown desolate. In the winter chill, cold winds swirled bits of white trash through the air. Shops had mostly shuttered, leaving only a lone 24-hour pharmacy glowing with its big green open sign.

Ye Can trailed behind Lin Zixi, swaying lazily. A few meters from the pharmacy, her sharp ears caught a faint sobbing cry.

The voice sounded familiar. Ye Can followed the sound and spotted a small figure huddled at the bus stop diagonally across from the pharmacy. With her keen eyesight, even in the dim light, Ye Can made out it was a girl—and one whose silhouette rang a bell.

A face flashed in Ye Can’s mind. She halted, tugged Lin Zixi, and headed straight for the crouching girl.

Lin Zixi was baffled. “Ye Can, what are you doing? The pharmacy’s right there.”

Ye Can pulled her along. “Aw, someone’s crying. Think I know her. Let’s check it out.”

She dragged Lin Zixi to the bus stop. Up close, Lin Zixi finally saw the person squatting there, head in hands, sobbing away.

The crying was heartbroken, so absorbed that she didn’t notice the approach.

As Ye Can drew near with Lin Zixi, she cautiously extended her foot and gave the girl’s back a light nudge. “Hey, what’re you doing!”

It happened so fast Lin Zixi couldn’t stop her—Ye Can had already kicked and retracted. Lin Zixi pinched Ye Can’s arm, shocked. “Why’d you kick her?”

Ye Can glanced innocently. “What, should I push instead?”

The nudge snapped the crier’s attention. She lifted her head in a daze, tears streaming, and locked eyes on Ye Can, who held Lin Zixi’s hand.

Under the streetlamp, through blurry vision, she recognized Ye Can’s face and lunged like she’d found family, hugging Ye Can’s leg and bawling, “Ye Can! Waaah… I got robbed!”

Ye Can looked down at Liang Yu clinging to her leg, eyes wide. “You… talk properly! Don’t just grab me!”

After some wrestling, Ye Can finally pried off the koala bear latched to her leg.

Hugging Lin Zixi tight, Ye Can watched coldly as Liang Yu leaned into Tong Lin’s tall embrace, sniffling out her tale. “Today… after my extra role, I went out for night snacks… alone… walking alone… then these guys on a scooter robbed me.”

Ye Can frowned at her frail look. “Robbed? Then call the cops.”

Liang Yu sobbed on. “M-my phone’s gone…”

Ye Can was disgusted. “No phone? Borrow one!”

Liang Yu hiccuped. “I… got robbed.” She kept repeating it, grating on Ye Can’s nerves. “Then call the cops! Quit crying! You look ugly as hell—like a big toad!”

Ye Can’s sudden shout startled Liang Yu into a momentary pause.

Tears brimmed in Liang Yu’s eyes as she stared pleadingly at Ye Can. Facing that fierce glare, she hiccuped again, mouth wobbling—then wailed louder.

“Waaah, how can you be like this? I got robbed, and you don’t comfort me—you yell at me!”

Liang Yu clutched Tong Lin’s arm, snot and tears flowing freely. Ye Can gaped, speechless. Before she could retort, Lin Zixi shot her a look and said wearily, “Ye Can, zip it. I’ll handle this.”

Lin Zixi sighed, gently wiping Liang Yu’s tears. “Little miss, how about we call the police for you? Your stuff’s probably gone for good, but at least we can try recovering important items from your bag?”

The big sister’s soft words cleared some fog from Liang Yu’s panicked mind. She looked up at Lin Zixi’s kind face and sniffled, “C-can’t… can’t call the police…”

Lin Zixi stayed patient. “Why not?”

Leaning into Tong Lin, Liang Yu nose-sniffled haltingly, “B-because… I snuck out. If police get involved, my parents will find me.”

After Lin Zixi’s gentle questioning, the full story emerged.

Liang Yu was still a student—a pure-as-gold high schooler.

Years ago, she’d dreamed of acting and planned to enter film school via arts exams. But dreams clashed with reality; her parents, dead set on her inheriting the family business, ignored her wishes and secured a foreign business degree offer for after graduation next year.

Unable to fight their plans, Liang Yu schemed for half a year—saved cash, got new cards, prepped everything—and ran away from home.

Hearing this, Lin Zixi gasped inwardly at the girl before her.

Kids these days are getting bolder and bolder.

Liang Yu had only been in Film City a few days. She’d hoped to break in via extras work, but now, bagless—no ID, no phone, no money—her hopes were dashed.

Stubbornly refusing police, Liang Yu clung to Lin Zixi, crying pitifully, “My phone and ID were in there, my bank card with all my money… What do I do? Sis… what should I do?”

Ye Can yanked Lin Zixi back the moment Liang Yu grabbed her, shielding her possessively.

Ye Can eyed Liang Yu without pity. “What else? Call the cops. Don’t want to? Go home. Can’t go home? Grit your teeth and survive broke.”

Ye Can had it all figured. “You’re doing extras, right? Hundred bucks a day, group meals, cheap lodging—doable.”

“Once you’re steady, call your parents, replace your ID. Done.”

Her words seemed to rally the devastated Liang Yu. Wiping tears, she perked up like she’d mainlined adrenaline. “Right! I’ve started earning from extras! Can’t let a little robbery stop me! I’ll push through!”

Lin Zixi marveled at the girl’s mood-swing speed, typical teen drama. She sighed, swatted Ye Can lightly. “Ye Can, quit messing around.”

Turning to Liang Yu, Lin Zixi pulled out her phone. “Kid, whatever you think, after this mess, I’m calling the police for you.”

“Trust me—it’s the best move right now.”
