Lin Zixi thought Ye Can was truly a remarkable person. Whenever you thought she was naive and worldly-inexperienced, she would show incredibly sharp insight.
Lin Zixi let out a soft sigh and looked at Ye Can. “Even if you’re unhappy, what can you do about it?”
Though this bit of emotion was trivial, Lin Zixi inexplicably wanted to ask anyway.
Ye Can pondered for a moment, gazing at her seriously. “Then what do you want? What would make you happy like before?” Ye Can thought for a bit, then opened her arms to Lin Zixi again. “How about another hug? Would that make you feel better?”
Lin Zixi burst out laughing and lightly patted Ye Can’s hand. “Do you think I’m some kid like you, with moods that swing all over the place? Alright, I was just teasing. I’m not unhappy at all. Come on, let’s go get some food.”
With that, Lin Zixi took Ye Can’s hand and went to pick up the crew’s boxed lunches. The uncle handing out meals recognized Ye Can and scooped her a huge portion. Lin Zixi glanced at Ye Can with an amused, half-smiling look.
Ye Can’s body had been altered by the Immoral God like this, leaving her utterly helpless. She used to have no strong cravings for food, but now she was tormented into eating endlessly every day.
Since her body was like this anyway, and facing Lin Zixi’s knowing gaze, Ye Can decided to throw caution to the wind. She scarfed down one portion, then went back for another bowl, not stopping until her little belly was stuffed full and she finally set down her bowl with satisfaction.
After lunch, it was time for Ye Can’s scene opposite Feng Jianming. Lin Zixi finished her meal and got a call from the coordinator of the neighboring crew. She hurriedly left to work on a script. Seeing Tong Lin there to accompany her, Ye Can let her go and headed to the set alone.
Ye Can changed into a new outfit and had her makeup done in a youthful, tender style. She stood beside Hou Ming, listening as he explained the scene.
The main content of this scene was Prince Cheng instructing his young brother at home before setting off to conquer South Liang. Whether to include it in the final edit would be decided later.
Even so, Hou Ming had high demands for Ye Can. “Right now, you’re the little brother being taught by your elder sibling. To you, he’s like a father.”
“You feel reverence for him, but also the challenging spirit of a young lion. Got it?”
Ye Can nodded. “I understand.” Most princes, before they fully matured, felt this way toward their crown prince brother. The same went for their fathers, of course.
Hou Ming turned to eye Ye Can’s slight frame and frowned. “Your build fits perfectly now, but this outfit won’t do. You’ve read the script, right? You have to fight your big brother.”
Ye Can nodded. “I know.”
Hou Ming stroked his chin and said to her, “Later, practice with the action director and Feng Jianming. The moves aren’t complicated or flashy. Once you’ve got it down, we’ll shoot tonight.”
Ye Can acknowledged with an “oh,” and Hou Ming called over the action director to discuss the choreography. Once settled, the action director began coaching Ye Can on the moves.
In the spacious training room, Feng Jianming held a long staff and teased the slight figure across from him. “Director, what if I hurt my little brother with that build of his?”
“Seriously, Director Hou, you’re not using a stunt double for her in this scene?”
Hou Ming, balding with frustration, replied, “Hey, just be careful. A stunt double? Look at her figure—which double could pull that off!”
“I want that beautiful, fierce little boy vibe!”
Fine, if Hou Ming insisted, Feng Jianming had no choice but to play the sparring partner obediently. He walked up with his staff. “Ye Can, I’ll practice with you first.”
Ye Can said “oh” and followed the action director’s instructions. She stepped on one end of a staff to stand it up, then grabbed it neatly.
The motion was crisp and impressive. Feng Jianming couldn’t help calling out, “Nice!”
Feng Jianming gave her a heads-up first. “The staff won’t hit you—don’t worry, I’ve got control.”
He gripped his staff with both hands in a spear stance. “Come on, attack me. Big brother will teach you.”
Ye Can expressionlessly hefted her staff, leaped forward, and smashed fiercely toward Feng Jianming’s left shoulder. The staff whistled past his face. Luckily, he was trained; he swung his staff to block over his shoulder.
Ye Can’s staff clashed against Feng Jianming’s with tremendous force. Crack! The wood in Feng Jianming’s hands splintered.
The impact numbed his palms, forcing him back a step as he dropped the broken staff.
Clang! The two halves hit the ground and rolled away. Everyone off-set blinked, hardly believing their eyes.
Feng Jianming was stunned. He stared at his reddened palms, then looked up at the innocent-faced Ye Can. She asked, “The staff broke. Still practice?”
Feng Jianming sucked in a breath. “Ye Can, you train? From Shaolin?”
Ye Can planted her staff. “Nah, I cultivate Daoist arts. Wanna keep going?”
Feng Jianming shook his head with a wry smile. “Can’t for now—hands are numb.”
Once they heard the exchange, the crew snapped back to reality—some cleaned up the mess, others offered comfort.
Even Hou Ming came over, grinning at Feng Jianming’s red hands. “Hah, even you kung fu masters meet your match someday. Debuted over a decade ago, and you trip up against a little girl.”
Hou Ming turned to Ye Can, beaming. “Ye Can, why didn’t you say you trained? Would’ve saved us trouble.”
Ye Can looked innocent. “You didn’t ask.” If you’d asked, I’d have told you.
Hou Ming realized this kid had a real one-track mind and sighed helplessly at Feng Jianming. “Alright, now we know your ‘little brother’ knows martial arts too. Figure out the moves yourselves later.”
Hou Ming then beckoned Ye Can over.
He broke down the scene for her youthful face. “Ye Can, you’re the one being taught—you can’t outdo your brother. He’s instructing you, not the other way around.”
Ye Can nodded, recalling her early training days. “Got it. So when we shoot, I’ll resist a little but still take the hits, right?”
“Take hits?” Hou Ming choked, then said, “If you put it that way, sure. But get the emotion out—you know martial arts, so spar a few more rounds with your ‘second brother.’ Don’t end it too quick.”
Ye Can countered, “Martial arts for self-defense are usually one-hit kills. Didn’t you say no flashy stuff?”
Hou Ming grumbled, “You think movie characters are all like Gu Long’s novels? One flash of the blade, and everyone’s down? We need visual impact—make it exciting, beautiful, let the audience savor the artistry of the shot.”
“We’re conveying visual thrills, the beauty of art.”
Ye Can was a total novice, but to earn her keep, she figured she should learn. She humbly asked for advice. Seeing her youth, Hou Ming took the chance to teach, pulling her aside for some film basics.
Finally, Hou Ming said earnestly, “You’ve got that spark—Heaven’s gifted you a meal ticket. After this scene, consider film school.”
He added, “By the way, did you graduate high school? How old are you? Interested in film academy?”
Ye Can thought it over. “I think I graduated college.”
Hou Ming was floored. “No way. What’d you study?”
“Architecture.”
Hou Ming laughed. “A top student, huh.” After the teasing, Feng Jianming was ready. This time, Ye Can dominated.
Though Feng Jianming trained, he wasn’t at Ye Can’s level—and he held back because she was a girl. After a few exchanges, Hou Ming sensed something off.
From off-set, he barked in frustration, “Jianming, be fiercer, stricter! Ye Can’s blocking everything—you’re letting her lead the rhythm. No good!”
Ye Can felt it too and kept prompting during the fight, “You’ve got more in you—attack! I’ll be fine.”
Prodded from all sides, Feng Jianming finally swung a hard staff strike at Ye Can’s leg without holding back. Ye Can timed it perfectly, deliberately missing the block to feign a panicked defense. Finally, a mistake appeared.
Feng Jianming’s staff swept heavily toward her calf. Ye Can felt the pain, her knee buckling as she crumpled to the ground.
Thud! Ye Can gripped her staff, kneeling. Feng Jianming yanked back his force and rushed over. “Ye Can, sorry! Did I hurt you?”
Half-kneeling, Ye Can slowly looked up at the approaching Feng Jianming, her eyes icy. “I’m fine. Did you get that feeling?”
Feng Jianming froze, baffled.
Ye Can blew at her bangs and said seriously, “I want you to keep that intensity. Don’t hold back just because I’m young. You’re my brother—like a father.”
“Royal discipline is always ruthless.”
Feng Jianming realized he’d reined himself in too much as a pro actor, overly cautious with the young one.
He felt like a general disrespecting his foe on the battlefield, a twinge of shame. Facing the dedicated Ye Can, he apologized sincerely. “Sorry, my mistake on the job. Won’t happen again.”
From then on, Feng Jianming shed his chivalry toward girls and went full force against Ye Can.
They shot from dusk till deep night. For visual effect, Hou Ming had the makeup team dress Ye Can and Feng Jianming in snow-white underrobes. With Ye Can’s slim build, they even fitted her with fake male pecs.
The fight was brutal, drawing the whole crew to watch.
On the final take, Ye Can let Feng Jianming’s staff clip her back. She staggered and half-kneeled.
Prince Cheng—Feng Jianming—retracted his training staff sternly. “Not quite there. Practice more.”
Xiao Can half-knelt, head bowed, fists clenched, teeth gritted, and humbly murmured, “Brother is right.”
Next was the old emperor summoning Prince Cheng to the palace. Hou Ming nailed this take and finally yelled, “Cut!”
The scene left even Feng Jianming winded—he slumped off-camera, unwilling to move. But Ye Can, after taking hit after hit, bounced back lively as ever, like nothing happened.
Feng Jianming gave her a thumbs-up. “The younger generation is formidable.”
I took worse beatings as a kid, Ye Can thought, flashing a grin without much fuss.
Hou Ming sat by the monitor, replaying the shot with lingering satisfaction. Watching Ye Can’s retreating figure sparked an idea.
But he hesitated, mulling it over before calling her back. “It’s deep winter—dare to do a cold water plunge?”
Money’s money, Ye Can thought. “If you need it, I can shoot it.”
Hou Ming slapped his thigh. “Great! Prep it—we’re adding a scene!”
