Admitting that she liked Ye Can wasn’t a difficult thing for Lin Zixi at all. She was a mentally healthy person, and it was perfectly normal to be drawn to an interesting soul.
Not to mention, setting aside how intriguing Ye Can was, she also possessed beauty that few could rival. As a top-tier member of the looks-obsessed club, Lin Zixi found it impossible not to be moved after staring at that face day and night.
Once she accepted that she had indeed fallen for Ye Can, all those recent bouts of panic, irritation, and helpless confusion vanished without a trace. All that remained was her innate nonchalance toward relationships—letting things flow naturally and leaving it to fate.
Liking someone was a big deal, sure, but at the same time, it was utterly trivial. Lin Zixi had never dreamed of romance, so she had no desire to force some earth-shattering passion or demand a love that lasted until the grave.
Thus, her stance toward Ye Can was simple: no pursuing, no rejecting—just let the feelings evolve on their own.
Likes came in layers, after all. With the passage of time, they’d either fade away or become an irreplaceable necessity. There were no other possibilities.
Lin Zixi figured that Ye Can wasn’t an essential part of her life right now. She had no immediate plans for dating either, and on top of that, Ye Can was in the throes of a pure one-sided crush. There was no need to voice her feelings aloud.
With that mindset, as she held Ye Can’s hand on the way back, Lin Zixi looked at her messy hair and sighed. “With how sloppy you look, how could I possibly like you?”
Ye Can’s eyes lit up. “You’re serious? You really won’t like me, right?”
Lin Zixi felt an inexplicable sting in her heart.
She’d never imagined she’d have to deploy her professional deflection tactics on someone she actually liked. She pushed Ye Can away, her tone icy. “Stop being so full of yourself. Didn’t I already say I wouldn’t like someone twelve years younger than me?”
Ye Can, pushed aside, only clung closer, wrapping her arms around Lin Zixi. “That’s great. I knew you’d see reason. Compared to anyone else, liking me just isn’t worth it.”
The girl’s embrace was so warm. Lin Zixi felt her breath brushing her ear and, traitorously, her ears turned red.
Pretending to be annoyed, she muttered, “Yeah, not worth it.”
Ye Can hugged her from behind, grinning. “So, who do you think would be a smarter bet? If you’re gonna like someone, go for Meng Zhiqiu. She’s gorgeous, has a great temper, and adores you. You wouldn’t lose out.”
Lin Zixi paused, then sighed softly. “Cut it out. Why bring up Miss Meng again? And liking someone isn’t a business deal—why overthink it like that?”
Ye Can chuckled. “Because out of everyone I know, only Miss Meng likes you that much.”
“Besides, liking someone is a transaction. Some people like you more, some less. Of course you pick someone who likes you even more than you like them.”
Ye Can’s world seemed so childlike—pure arithmetic, nothing but simple addition and subtraction.
She hadn’t yet grasped that emotions couldn’t be quantified or measured. Nor that a person’s affection was often one-sided, a simple “I want to.”
And yet she’s so good to me, Lin Zixi thought. It’s just her ‘I want to,’ just her one-sided devotion.
Lin Zixi sighed softly, her voice lowering. “Ye Can, you don’t need to worry so much about my affairs.”
She decided to cast aside that flicker of heartache from her feelings, took a deep breath, turned to look at Ye Can behind her, and curved her lips into a smile. “You worked so late—want some late-night snacks?”
Ye Can whooped, still hugging her. “Yes! I want some!” She hadn’t seen Lin Zixi in days and hadn’t eaten her fill either. Tonight, she was going to feast.
She looped her arms around Lin Zixi’s neck, draped over her back, pushing her forward while chattering excitedly. “I want big chicken wings, eggplant, lamb skewers, fatty beef…”
Lin Zixi felt the weight on her back and smiled, her eyes crinkling. “Okay…”
After those absurd few days, Lin Zixi resolved to make peace with herself. She acknowledged her liking for Ye Can and understood its current level, so she kept things normal between them.
But that night, neither brought up moving back in. Lin Zixi, who had come to crave that warmth, returned to the cold solitude—and in those chilly nights, she gradually sorted out her thoughts.
Another half month passed, bringing the deadline for Ye Can’s Extra Role Thousand Times Task. That night, after midnight, as she walked back to the hotel with Lin Zixi, a cold, mechanical voice echoed in her mind.
“Extra Role Thousand Times Task completion: 1002/1000. Favorability detection: 100/121734.”
“Extra Role Task completed. Unlocking Supporting Role Task: Within one year, play ten supporting roles, while completing the Favorability detection task.”
Ye Can halted, thinking, As expected, the Immoral God wants me to debut! Damn it, extras weren’t enough? Now supporting roles? Will all my future contracts be for side characters?
The more she thought, the angrier she got. She mentally demanded, “Why do you keep assigning me these tasks? Can’t you just tell me your goal outright?”
The Immoral God, uncharacteristically indulgent, answered her question. “It’s not that I have a goal. It’s that you do.”
“Ye Can, have you forgotten why you exist in this world?”
Ye Can fell silent. Of course she knew. She existed for Lin Zixi. She’d traded eternal sleep and endless toil in Avici Hell for Lin Zixi’s peace.
So it wasn’t the Immoral God scheming against her—it was her own past prayer to it.
Everything in the world demanded a price for a response. Perhaps Ye Can’s sacrifices were exactly what the Immoral God desired.
The relentless extras, supporting roles, acting, Favorability quests—something in there must be what the Immoral God craved.
Maybe… it’s trying to cultivate faith through me?
As Ye Can spiraled into wild speculation, the cold voice cut her off. “New task issued: Starting today, share a bed with Lin Zixi for two months. Failure: Lin Zixi dies.”
Ye Can froze for a beat, then mentally exploded. “Are you messing with me on purpose?! You didn’t issue this when we slept together every night before! Now you do?!”
“Do you have any idea what happens if we get too close and she falls for me? If she loves me and I die again, what if she follows me in death? Then you’ll punish her again, and I’ll ache for her all over! What then?!”
In that moment, Ye Can wasn’t even thinking about her own death—the Immoral God’s antics were just too infuriating! The voice went silent amid her outburst, vanishing entirely.
Ye Can knew her every action was trivial to the Immoral God. She took a deep breath and accepted reality.
Fine. What else can I do? Just sleeping together—it’s not like we haven’t. At worst, I’ll shamelessly crash for the night.
With that, she followed Lin Zixi into the elevator and to her room door.
Usually, Ye Can would head back after seeing her here, but this time she lingered. Lin Zixi opened the door and glanced back. “It’s late—go on back.”
Ye Can rubbed the back of her neck, eyed the ceiling, then her feet, and forced a smile. Softly, she said, “Can I sleep with you tonight?”
Her voice was so faint, like a fly’s buzz. Lin Zixi didn’t catch it. “Hm?”
Ye Can inhaled deeply, met Lin Zixi’s gaze squarely, and declared righteously, “I want to sleep with you tonight. In the same bed.”
Her expression was deadly serious, as if proposing they go to bed right then. Lin Zixi blinked, her heartbeat quickening. “Don’t you have your own room? And you’ve been sleeping alone for ages…”
Ye Can braced one hand on the doorframe, lowered her eyes, batted them pleadingly. “I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately. I miss your bed.”
Lin Zixi tamped down her stirring heart and refused flatly, “Hotel beds are all the same. No such thing as missing mine.”
Talk about impervious.
Ye Can gazed at her earnestly, feigning grievance. “But my bed doesn’t have your scent, or your soft body.”
She looked up with sparkling eyes. “Lin Zixi, I miss your body!”
What wolfish words! Lin Zixi’s ears burned. She slammed the door with a bang, ignoring her completely.
Ye Can stared at the shut door in shock, then pounded on it frantically. “Lin Zixi! Lin Zixi! Let me in and sleep with you! I really miss your body!”
Behind the door, Lin Zixi covered her face. This half-grown kid is terrifying! Spouting shameful things without any intention of following through. Has she even considered how us mature big sisters feel?
And wasn’t it you who slunk away before? Now you want back in!
But at the persistent thumps, Lin Zixi sighed deeply and yanked the door open.
She looked up at Ye Can, still mid-knock, her expression cool. “Go change into pajamas first, then come back.”
Ye Can lit up with joy. “Okay! Wait for me—I’ll be right back.”
Lin Zixi watched her dash joyfully toward the stairs, her lithe figure disappearing. Leaning against the doorframe, Lin Zixi’s gaze softened into a pool of spring water.
How did I fall for such a bratty kid? Do I secretly have overflowing maternal instincts or something?
