The crew around them stared in stunned silence at the two women embracing on the ground. It took a good while before someone snapped out of it and yelled, “Quick, check if they’re hurt!”
That shout jolted Lin Zixi into action. She pushed herself up to sit, peering down at Ye Can lying on the ground with worry. “Are you okay?”
Ye Can lifted her eyelids to glance at her. Every breath sent a stab of pain hammering from her back into her chest cavity. She paused for a moment, then met Lin Zixi’s eyes with utmost seriousness. “I’m not.”
In the end, an ambulance carted Ye Can off to the hospital.
After a full checkup confirmed that aside from scrapes on her palms and bruises on her back, Ye Can had no serious injuries, Lin Zixi finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Once they’d simply bandaged the wounds, Lin Zixi told Ye Can to wait for her in the pharmacy pickup area. She went off to grab the medications for the next few days.
Returning with the bag, she came to Ye Can’s side and sighed. “Come on, I’ll take you home.”
Ye Can looked up at her. “We’re heading back already?”
Lin Zixi explained gently, “You’ve got injuries on your hands. What, you wanna wander around outside instead of going home?” She sighed again, leaning down to meet Ye Can’s gaze seriously. “I don’t know how you found this place, but that’s enough for today.”
“I’ll get you home, and you stay there. Don’t come looking for me anymore. I’ve got work this afternoon.”
She rushed here on an empty stomach to save Lin Zixi and didn’t even get a thank you. Now she’s covered in injuries.
Ye Can felt deeply that the voice in her head had played her for a fool. All that effort for nothing but self-inflicted misery.
In her mind, she cursed that shameless Immoral God a thousand times over. Seeing her head bowed, Lin Zixi assumed she was fretting over the drama on set. Feeling a pang of sympathy, she softened her voice. “You… don’t worry about the damages from barging onto the set. I can handle all that for you.”
“Ye Can, just go home.”
Faced with such a rich young lady, Lin Zixi wasn’t sure what else to say.
Ye Can looked up and shot her a glance. Right then, a loud rumble echoed from her stomach.
Having eaten nothing since morning, Ye Can glanced down at her hunger-flattened belly, then looked up at Lin Zixi with sincere suggestion. “Right now, I think you should take me to eat first.”
Lin Zixi gazed at this kid who clearly had no idea what politeness meant, and finally sighed. “Fine, let’s go.”
She led Ye Can out of the hospital and walked over a hundred meters to a modest, affordable diner.
It was Ye Can’s first time eating at a place like this. Once seated, she couldn’t help her curiosity, glancing around like an excited child.
The server handed the menu to Lin Zixi. She skimmed it and passed it to Ye Can. “Order whatever you want.”
Ye Can arched a brow, thinking Lin Zixi was pretty decent to her. She grabbed the menu, scanned it, and without hesitation jabbed her finger at items. “I’ll have this… this…”
She ordered ten dishes in one go. Even the server couldn’t help reminding her, “Miss, it’s just two of you. You won’t finish that much—three or four dishes are plenty.”
The server glanced at Lin Zixi. “Maybe this lady can reorder?”
Ye Can bristled. “You said I could order. Why change it now and make her start over?”
The server forced a smile, thinking, It’s to stop brats like you from wasting food. But professional courtesy won out. “Our shop discourages waste, so we suggest ordering only what you can eat.”
Can’t finish it? Don’t order. Save the nation’s grain, right?
Ye Can nodded with an “oh,” tilting her head at Lin Zixi. “So how much can I order?”
Lin Zixi smiled good-naturedly. “As much as you can eat.”
Ye Can took her advice, pointing and swiping across the menu. “Then add these too.”
She handed the menu back to the server with grave seriousness. “Hurry, please. I’m starving.”
The server’s mouth twitched. As long as they pay, if they can’t finish, just tell ’em they can take it to go.
She agreed and scurried off, thinking to herself that raising a brat like this meant the family must be loaded.
The food arrived quickly. Ye Can eyed the spread of dishes she’d ordered, her appetite surging. Lin Zixi hadn’t eaten lunch yet either, so she joined in with a few bites.
Seeing her set down her chopsticks after just two, Ye Can asked puzzled, “Eat up—why’d you stop?”
Lin Zixi didn’t have a big appetite. “I’m good. You take your time, no rush.”
She had a slow temperament, her personality gentle to a fault, as if nothing in the world could truly stir her.
For no reason at all, Ye Can recalled how she used to be.
Always so aloof, her face devoid of expression. Even her smiles melted like fresh snow in one’s palm—fleeting at best. And now, those eyes crinkling at Ye Can in a smile? That had never happened.
Ye Can instinctively buried her face in her bowl. Lin Zixi really hated me back then. Such beautiful eyes, sparkling like spring water when she smiles. But in the Royal Palace, they were still as a pool of dead water.
She clearly hated me—enough to want me dead. So why did she die with me?
And not just die, but end up thrown into Avici Hell after forsaking her life.
It baffled Ye Can completely.
Human emotions were so tangled—hate on the surface, but maybe love underneath. Or hate laced with love.
How do you even pull that off?
These knotty questions spun endlessly in Ye Can’s head, giving her a headache.
Her thoughts drifted to the voice in her mind, that Immoral God, and the mess she’d just been through. Suicidal urges flickered again.
Just die already.
That Immoral God claimed she was here to save Lin Zixi in this world, but really, she was just a toy being toyed with. With that level of mischief, more trouble was guaranteed.
I’m already dead. Why torment a corpse?
Ye Can glanced up at Lin Zixi, glad to see her. But after eating, she resolved to die.
The thought flashed, and a shrill alarm blared in her mind: “Warning! Warning! Your survival instinct has hit critical low—world derailing imminent!”
“Punishment: Heart-piercing pain once, relive hardship once!”
The instant the voice faded, agony stabbed her chest. In a flash, Ye Can was hurled back into that frigid night, watching helplessly as Lin Zixi died, tasting utter powerlessness alone.
She gripped her chopsticks fiercely, gritting her teeth through the pain, cursing that damn thief Immoral God ten thousand times in her heart.
This damn thief grips my weakness tight—can’t live, can’t die, just endless torment.
Ye Can looked up at Lin Zixi, thinking bitterly, This is the debt she owes me. Fine, I’ll pay it.
The intense pain beaded cold sweat on her forehead. Her odd behavior finally caught Lin Zixi’s eye. Seeing her clutching her stomach, no longer eating, Lin Zixi asked cautiously, “Are you… having stomach pains?”
This kid’s always starving herself, wolfs down food so fast—probably has a weak stomach.
Ye Can glanced up without a word. Lin Zixi, worried, flagged the server for a cup of warm water. “If you’re not feeling well, sip some hot water to settle it. I’ll take you to the hospital after, okay?”
Ye Can shook her head. Moments later, amid her silent curses, the punishment ebbed. The ordeal left her even hungrier.
She straightened up, reached out, clamped a piece of meat, popped it in her mouth, and said, “I’m fine. Just hungry.”
Lin Zixi watched her eat normally and probed carefully, “You sure you’re okay?”
Ye Can affirmed, “Totally fine.”
Lin Zixi sighed. “Eat slowly then. Tell me if anything feels off.” Good deed to the end—she’d see this kid home safe.
Maybe this world was illusory, or Ye Can just a ghost with a body, but her stomach felt like a bottomless pit, devouring endless food.
Lin Zixi, across from her, watched in awe as she polished off eighty percent of the table. “You have some appetite.”
What big-eater reincarnated into this kid to down all that?
Curiosity piqued again, Lin Zixi asked, “Have you always eaten like this?” So much, without bursting.
Ye Can sneered. “Only after turning into a hungry ghost.” She was pretty sure the Immoral God was behind her bottomless hunger.
Self-deprecating as ever. Lin Zixi pursed her lips, amused, but concern as the elder prompted her. “If you get the chance, maybe get a full checkup at the hospital.”
That appetite—hope there’s no health issue.
Ye Can waved it off. “No need. Big appetite’s a blessing.”
She clamped another mouthful. Can’t die from eating, so why not?
Lin Zixi sighed, watching her battle on, thinking she’d met quite the character.
Just then, Jiang Yue’s call came in. Lin Zixi answered to hear, “Teacher Lin, can you make it back for tonight’s night shoot? Need to tweak a few spots.”
Lin Zixi murmured back, “Yeah, soon as I drop this person off.”
Jiang Yue’s curiosity flared, recalling the earlier chaos. “Person? That kid who crashed the set today? Teacher Lin, who’s she to you? What’s the deal?”
Ye Can’s ears were sharp; even faint, she caught every word.
She perked up, eavesdropping fully.
Lin Zixi replied softly, “Just a kid I know. Any damages from her barging in today—put it on me. Give me a number later; I’ll cover it.”
She and Jiang Yue had met back on that palace intrigue drama Jade Coquette, bonding from humble beginnings—their friendship was tight.
Before Jiang Yue could say no need to pay, Ye Can cut in anxiously, “Don’t pay for me!”
Lin Zixi looked up. Ye Can was fumbling in her pocket for her phone, dialing while insisting, “I’ve got money—lots of it. No need for you to cover.”
She hit 1, speed-dialing Ye Shen. After a few rings, a tentative female voice came through. “Can? Need help with something?”
Ye Can said, “Yeah, sorta. I gotta pay someone off.”
