Chapter 37: Peril
Besides gasoline, alcohol, and glass bottles, Jiang Zao also wanted to collect as many weapons as possible.
Wen Zhao pulled the hose out of the car’s fuel tank and turned around to see Jiang Zao staring blankly at the blue sign of the police station in front of her.
“What are you thinking about?”
Jiang Zao came to her senses. “Should we go in and take a look?”
“If you’re thinking of getting a real gun, then forget it. Town police stations are generally not equipped with guns.”
Jiang Zao pouted. “We can get something else. Aren’t there still a few cars parked in there?”
Looking in the direction she was pointing, there were indeed a few police cars parked in the parking lot of the police station courtyard. It seemed that no one had driven them.
Wen Zhao nodded and put away the hose. “Let’s go.”
The iron gate of the police station was wide open, and it was empty inside. The zombie outbreak in the town had been sudden, and everyone must have been out on duty at the time.
Wen Zhao hid behind the surrounding wall and observed for a while. Just as she was about to step in, Jiang Zao patted her shoulder and motioned for her to look at the guardhouse on the left. Through the glass of the guardhouse, a figure could be vaguely seen sitting in a chair, its head constantly hitting the table.
“A living person? Or a zombie?”
“I don’t know. Let’s go and see.”
Jiang Zao crouched down and drew her ice axe from her back.
The group tiptoed to the glass of the guardhouse. Only when they got closer did they hear the “he he” sound coming from the zombie’s mouth.
Wen Zhao: “I’ll take care of it.”
Jiang Zao nodded. “Be careful.”
She slipped into the police station courtyard along the wall, circled to the front door, and then took out a black hairpin from her pocket.
While the zombie was still unaware, a black figure had quietly stood up beside it.
After a crisp sound of bones breaking, its head was permanently limp on the table.
After coming out of the guardhouse, Jiang Zao saw her put the black hairpin back into her chest pocket and raised an eyebrow.
“I think that’s mine.”
Wen Zhao cleared her throat a couple of times. “Borrowing, just borrowing.”
Jiang Zao rolled her eyes and got up to follow her.
Wen Zhao slipped to the side of the first police car. After looking around and seeing no one, she opened the fuel tank cap, inserted the hose into the oil drum, and squeezed the self-made pump made from a plastic bottle. A moment later, gasoline slowly flowed into the oil drum.
While waiting for it to finish, Jiang Zao and Li Mi were not idle. They held their bows and arrows, looking around nervously to keep watch for her.
After siphoning from the two police cars in the same way, the oil drum was already half full. Wen Zhao picked it up and shook it. She saw another private car parked in the open space in the courtyard. The logo indicated that it was not cheap, and it was probably driven by a leader. She walked over with the oil drum.
“This big guy should have a lot of oil.”
She tried to open the fuel tank cap with her hand but found that it wouldn’t budge. She looked at Jiang Zao helplessly.
“Let me borrow your ice axe.”
Jiang Zao drew her ice axe from her back and handed it over.
“Hurry up.”
Wen Zhao stuck the tip of the axe into the gap between the fuel tank cap and the car body and pried it up with force. “Almost… there!”
As soon as she finished speaking, a sharp car alarm suddenly sounded, echoing throughout the courtyard.
The zombies wandering on the street outside all turned their heads as if they had found their direction.
Jiang Zao’s face changed. “Oh no! The fuel tank is connected to the alarm!”
Li Mi, with her sharp eyes, had already seen the zombies roaring and pouncing on them from the main entrance of the police station. She quickly drew her bow.
“Big sister, the zombies are coming!”
Jiang Zao didn’t have time to think and also drew her bow with her. She looked back and saw that Wen Zhao was still tightening the cap of the oil drum and couldn’t help but shout, “What are you doing?! Why aren’t you running!”
“We’ve worked so hard to collect this half a barrel of oil. We can’t just leave it here. Let’s go!”
Wen Zhao fumbled to tighten the cap of the oil drum, then casually picked it up and smashed a zombie that was pouncing on her, fighting as she retreated.
Seeing more and more zombies rushing in from the courtyard entrance, Jiang Zao gritted her teeth and put away her bow and arrow.
“Run into the police station, quick!”
The three of them and a dog had just rushed into the police station’s service hall when the zombies that had rushed in from the courtyard pounced on the glass door.
Jiang Zao held the door with one hand and quickly undid the chain on the door with the other, wanting to lock it again.
Li Mi also pounced on it to help.
It all happened in a flash.
A few zombies in police uniforms rushed out from behind the counter of the service hall and were about to pounce on Jiang Zao.
“Be careful!”
Wen Zhao, holding the gasoline can, used brute force to knock the zombies away.
“It’s done!”
Jiang Zao let go of the chain, and the zombies crashed against the door with a bang. Looking at the constantly shaking glass door, she took a few steps back.
Seeing a few more zombies rushing out of the first-floor corridor, Kele barked twice and ran up to the second floor.
Wen Zhao shouted for them to follow. “Quick! Follow Kele!”
Li Mi’s dagger deftly finished off a zombie that was still on the ground and not quite dead, and she also quickly followed them.
Kele was leading the way in front. The car alarm downstairs was getting louder and louder, and the sound of footsteps behind them was also getting closer.
Jiang Zao was worried that the glass door would not last long. She took a quick look and saw that the doors of all the rooms upstairs were closed.
“We can’t go on like this. We have to find a place to hide!”
“I know! But I don’t have time to pick the lock now!”
Wen Zhao was also anxious. She glanced out of the corner of her eye and saw Kele turn a corner and squeeze through a door crack.
The office door plate read: Chief’s Office.
A hint of joy appeared in her heart. “We can go in through the door in front!”
Li Mi rushed to the door and pushed it hard, but she found that something was blocking it from behind, and it wouldn’t open at all.
A hint of a sob was in her voice.
“Big sister, something is blocking the door from behind!”
“Get out of the way! I’ll do it!”
Wen Zhao and Jiang Zao pressed against the door from the left and right, continuously pushing in with their shoulders. But they only managed to open a crack wide enough for a child to squeeze through.
Jiang Zao was panting. She looked through the half-open door and saw that an overturned iron cabinet was blocking the door from behind, forming a sturdy triangle with the door, the door frame, and the ceiling.
The sound of the zombies’ footsteps was already close at hand.
Jiang Zao tried to push the window again but found that it wouldn’t budge.
“The window is locked from the inside!”
Kele was also pacing back and forth anxiously inside, even letting out a soft whimper and biting Li Mi’s clothes.
Wen Zhao made a decisive decision and pushed Li Mi in.
“You go in first! Lock the door and don’t mind us!”
“Big sister!”
Li Mi fell to the ground and crawled to the crack in the door to take a look. Wen Zhao had already dragged Jiang Zao and was running towards the end of the corridor.
Just as she was about to stand up, Kele bit her clothes and pulled her back. With a flick of its tail, its furry tail just happened to hit the door and gently closed it. The roars went from far to near, and the next moment, the sound of approaching footsteps arrived. A series of distorted and deformed human faces were reflected on the window.
Li Mi held Kele and leaned against the base of the wall, swallowed, and didn’t even dare to breathe.
“There are stairs in front. Go down!”
The office building of the town police station was only two stories high, with stairs on the east and west sides. Wen Zhao was running down with her hand on the railing when she suddenly stopped.
“What’s wrong?!”
The glass door could not bear the weight and shattered with a crash. A tide of zombies poured in and were running up the stairs on this side.
Wen Zhao’s face changed. She pushed Jiang Zao up the stairs.
“Go, go, go quickly!”
The two of them fled, having to run up again. The zombies that had been lingering at the office door heard the noise and roared as they charged over. Seeing that there was a wall in front and no way out.
In a desperate situation, Jiang Zao saw the sign of a restroom on the door to the right. Without thinking, she rushed over.
“Quick, into the restroom!”
Just as she reached the restroom door, before she could rush in, a zombie pounced on her from the front.
Jiang Zao’s pupils shrank. In an instant, she had no time to react. At this critical moment, Wen Zhao took a step forward and put her arm around her shoulder.
She was also pulled into a darkness. A muffled grunt came from behind her, and the well door closed in front of her.
A zombie crashed against the iron door with a bang, and a pool of blood slowly flowed down the iron door.
In the small, crowded, and dark space, the two of them could only press tightly together. Jiang Zao’s breathing suddenly became rapid, and she subconsciously wanted to struggle.
“Mmm… mmm…”
Wen Zhao covered her mouth tightly. “Don’t talk… the zombies are right outside… they… can’t see us…”
“The alarm of the car in the courtyard is still ringing. If we don’t make any noise here, they… will leave by themselves in a while.”
Wen Zhao noticed that she was trembling and thought she was scared, so she subconsciously held her even tighter.
“Don’t be afraid… just hold on a little longer.”
The distance between the two of them was really too close. When Wen Zhao lowered her head slightly, she was speaking right next to her ear, and the warm breath she exhaled was all on her neck.
Jiang Zao’s eyes instantly widened, and her body suddenly tensed up.
She kept swallowing, praying that this long, seemingly century-long time would pass quickly.
After an unknown amount of time.
The footsteps outside gradually faded away.
The hand that was covering her mouth also slowly loosened its grip.
Wen Zhao let out a huge sigh of relief. The back of her clothes was also soaked in a cold sweat. After surviving a disaster, she had not had time to be happy for long.
Jiang Zao’s voice was as cold as a ten-thousand-year-old glacier.
“How long… are you going to… hold me… like this?”
Wen Zhao came to her senses and only then realized that her right hand was pressing on something soft. She was instantly flustered.
“Ah, I didn’t…”
Before the word “mean to” could be said, Jiang Zao sat up from her arms, turned around, and gave her a crisp slap. Then she picked up her fallen equipment and pushed open the well door.
Wen Zhao covered her face and hissed lightly, muttering, “I really didn’t mean to!” and also quickly followed.
“Jiang Zao, Jiang Zao, listen to my explanation!”
As soon as Wen Zhao finished speaking, an ice axe was pressed against the tip of her nose. A few zombies that had not yet dispersed were still lingering in the corridor.
“If you don’t want to die, shut up!”
Wen Zhao pursed her lips and nodded like a pecking chicken.
Only then did Jiang Zao take the ice axe away from her face.
Wen Zhao mouthed to her.
“I’ll take care of it.”
Jiang Zao also took out her bow from her back and drew it.
A zombie was standing at the top of the stairs not far from them. Wen Zhao crouched down and tiptoed over. While the zombie was not paying attention, she suddenly attacked and twisted its neck.
When the zombie that was wandering on the stairs looked over sharply, Wen Zhao had already dragged the fallen zombie’s foot into the shadows.
She tiptoed back to Jiang Zao’s side.
“There are also zombies on the stairs. We have to be quiet.”
Jiang Zao nodded. Just as she was about to take a step, Wen Zhao pulled her back again. “I’ll take the lead.”
Her movements were as light as a cat’s. She leaped over the empty space at the top of the stairs.
The zombie on the steps was still twitching on the spot, making a “he he” sound.
Wen Zhao turned her head and mouthed to Jiang Zao, “Come over.”
Jiang Zao did the same and also flashed over.
“Let’s go.”
Along the way, Jiang Zao also silently dealt with a few of the zombies that were wandering in the corridor with her bow and arrow.
The two of them made it to the office door where they had been separated from Li Mi without any incident. Jiang Zao gently knocked on the door.
“Little Mi?”
The heads of a person and a dog instantly popped up from the window.
Li Mi was on the verge of tears of joy. “Big sister!”
Wen Zhao mouthed for her to open the window.
Li Mi opened the window lock. Wen Zhao gently pushed open the window, and the two of them entered in single file.
As soon as she landed, Li Mi threw her arms around Jiang Zao’s waist.
“Big sister, I thought something had happened to you!”
Jiang Zao patted her head.
“I’m fine. What about you?”
Li Mi shook her head with teary eyes.
“Kele and I are also fine.”
As they were talking, Wen Zhao had pulled all the curtains on the side of the window that was next to the corridor tightly.
She walked to the other side of the window and took a look. The office was on the second floor, and below was an empty alley.
The car alarm in the front courtyard was still ringing. The zombies from the entire town had probably been attracted there.
This gave them a way out.
Wen Zhao turned her head and said.
“Let’s hurry up. Let’s get some things and go.”
Li Mi opened the drawer under the desk and rummaged through it a few times. It was either documents or seals.
Her gaze fell on an iron can on the desk. She opened it and sniffed it. “Big sister, it’s tea.”
“Take it. Jiang Wuni likes to drink that.”
Jiang Zao was also rummaging through things and said without looking back.
“Eh!” Li Mi replied crisply, put the tea can in her backpack, and turned to continue looking for the remaining drawers.
She opened the bottom cabinet of the desk and found an iron lump. She was a little surprised.
“Big sister, what’s this?”
Wen Zhao came over and took a look. “It’s a safe.”
“Can you open it?” Jiang Zao asked.
Wen Zhao fiddled with it a couple of times. “It’s a mechanical lock. I’ll try.”
She took out the black hairpin from her pocket again, inserted it into the keyhole, and lay on the ground, her ear against the safe.
Li Mi whispered, “What is Big Sister Wen doing?”
“Shh—” Jiang Zao stopped her.
“She’s listening to the sound to decode it.”
Click—
Click—
Sweat dripped from Wen Zhao’s temples. After a few turns of the lock, a crisp “click” sounded.
Wen Zhao’s eyes lit up, and she got up from the ground.
“It’s open.”
Inside were only a few gold bars and a box of handgun bullets.
She took them out and handed them to Jiang Zao as if presenting a treasure.
Jiang Zao snorted coldly, only took the bullets from her hand, stuffed them into her own bag, and didn’t even look at her.
Wen Zhao touched her nose, feeling snubbed.
Li Mi was still a child, after all, and was soon curious about other things. She looked at a long black knife in the display cabinet and stood on her tiptoes to touch it.
“Big sister, is this real or a toy?”
Wen Zhao walked over, picked up the scabbard, and a cold light flashed. She ran her finger over the snow-white blade.
The sharp cold light was like silver light on snow.
Wen Zhao couldn’t help but sigh, “What a good Tang-style horizontal knife. It’s already so sharp without being sharpened.”
Jiang Zao was already tying a bowline knot by the window.
“Are we going or not?”
Wen Zhao twirled the knife, neatly sheathed it, and held it in her hand. “Coming.”
Jiang Zao tied the rope around Li Mi’s waist first. Kele was held in Li Mi’s arms and let out a frightened whimper.
Li Mi gently covered its eyes with her hand.
“Kele, don’t be afraid. We’ll be there soon.”
Jiang Zao stood at the top and let out the rope, watching them reach the ground safely. She pulled the rope back up and tied it to the oil drum.
Li Mi untied the rope from the oil drum and threw it up again.
The last one was Wen Zhao.
After they came down, the group walked along the alley towards the parking spot. Jiang Zao and Li Mi were walking in front.
“Big sister, did you and Big Sister Wen have a fight?”
“No, why do you ask?”
“Then why is Big Sister Wen’s face so red?”
“She was probably bitten by a mosquito.”
Li Mi looked at Jiang Zao’s back, who had already walked ahead, and rubbed her hands, which were red from the north wind.
“Ah, isn’t it winter now…”
Jiang Zao opened the car door and got in, sitting in the passenger seat. She casually threw the keys on the dashboard.
Wen Zhao got into the driver’s seat, resignedly inserted the key into the ignition, stepped on the gas, and started the car.
The journey back was exceptionally quiet.
The usually most boisterous person and dog were also tired and were sleeping soundly in the back.
Wen Zhao glanced in the rearview mirror, turned on the car’s air conditioning, and when she turned to look at Jiang Zao, the latter was also leaning against the seat, her eyes closed, her arms crossed over her chest, and her breathing was even. It seemed she was also asleep.
When she was asleep, the sharpness in her face faded. Her eyelashes fluttered up and down, her nose was high, and her thin lips were slightly parted.
Wen Zhao turned back to drive, but for some reason, her body seemed to have a magical power, and her gaze was drawn back to her face again.
Her gaze gradually moved down.
Along her straight nose, over her lips, her sharp chin…
Until she belatedly remembered the softness in her palm.
Wen Zhao’s throat moved, and she couldn’t help but remember her reaction at that time. Besides being nervous and at a loss, there was also a hint of fear.
The two of them were very close at that time. She could feel Jiang Zao trembling. She didn’t think Jiang Zao was the type to be afraid of zombies.
Then, what was she afraid of?
“Drive properly. If you look again, I’ll gouge your eyes out.”
The person who had been resting with her eyes closed suddenly spoke, startling Wen Zhao. She almost slammed on the brakes and quickly turned her face away.
Jiang Zao turned over and silently zipped up her windbreaker to the highest point.
