Chapter 54 p1: Monster
At some point, snowflakes began to fall from the sky, landing on the rooftop and covering it with a thin layer of snow.
“This damn place is still so cold even though it’s spring!”
On the tallest building in the center of the town, a man casually picked up a military canteen and took a swig of liquor.
“Old Eight, what’s the situation?”
Old Three’s familiar voice came from the walkie-talkie.
“Pah, just because you’ve been with the boss for a few more days, you dare to boss me around.”
Old Eight spat, but remembering the boss’s orders, he still picked up the binoculars and observed carefully.
“It’s so cold that even the zombies aren’t coming out… damn, this is like taking off your pants to fart, completely unnecessary.”
He had originally been assigned to patrol here and observe the zombies’ migration patterns, but he unexpectedly saw a few moving black dots in the binoculars. He was a little surprised and zoomed in.
“What… is that?”
Jiang Zao shot an arrow into the back of a zombie’s head in front of her, silently clearing a path for them with her bow and arrow.
When she encountered an angle that couldn’t be solved with a bow and arrow, it was Mountain Stream Snow’s turn.
Wen Zhao cleanly sheathed her knife. “Let’s go.”
Li Mi and Kele behind her also quietly followed.
The three of them and a dog thus passed through the zombie-infested alley.
The man on the rooftop witnessed the whole process. “My goodness…”
It wasn’t until they were about to disappear from his sight that he hurriedly picked up the walkie-talkie.
“Report… report… boss, there are people… alive!”
The voice from the walkie-talkie was slightly impatient.
“Where would there be living people now?”
The man thought of the fat and strong wolfdog and swallowed hard. “They’re really alive! A group of three and a dog, very skilled. They’re heading towards the grain and oil factory!”
There was a brief silence on the walkie-talkie.
In the dim room, Old Three made a gesture.
“Boss, should I take some men and get them—”
The bald man, who was called “Boss,” had a deep scar on his face that ran from his brow to his chin, making him look even more sinister and terrifying in the already dark room.
“No. People who can still search for supplies outside at this time are not ordinary. Let the brothers on the perimeter withdraw. Let them in. Let’s find out their background first.”
“Yes, boss.”
Old Three acknowledged and was about to go out when the scar-faced man called him back. “Bring those women over. I have something to say to them.”
Just as the man picked up the walkie-talkie, Wen Zhao suddenly turned her head and looked up, her gaze sweeping back and forth over a few rooftops, as if looking for something.
“What’s wrong?”
Wen Zhao shook her head. She couldn’t describe the feeling of being pricked in the back at that moment, but she had very rich combat experience both before and after the apocalypse.
This experience of numerous life-and-death situations told her that she should trust her intuition.
So, she pulled Jiang Zao behind her.
“I’ll take the lead.”
To avoid the hordes of zombies on the street, the group dodged left and right in the alleys, climbing walls and rooftops. They finally arrived at the entrance of the grain and oil factory.
“This time, I feel like there are more zombies on the street than before the New Year…”
Jiang Zao said, panting slightly.
The gate of the grain and oil factory was open. Unlike the modern grain processing factories in big cities, the conditions and facilities here were a bit outdated. The surrounding wall was written with “No Smoking.”
A few delivery vans were parked in the open space in the middle of the courtyard. Their doors were also wide open, and the drivers were long gone.
The yellowed walls outside the factory were covered with ivy. Behind them were a few towering, neglected boilers, which had long been corroded by rain and snow and stood there quietly.
There were also a few zombies in blue work clothes scattered in the courtyard.
Wen Zhao peeked out from behind the wall to observe, then turned back. “There are five or six zombies in the courtyard at a glance. We have to deal with all of them before we can go in.”
Jiang Zao went past her and also peeked out a few times.
“Did you see where the warehouse is?”
Since there were also some in the courtyard, there might be even more zombies in other parts of the factory. To be safe, Jiang Zao still wanted to find a way to bypass them and go straight to the warehouse.
“No.” She remembered that Jiang Zao was a local and asked.
“Haven’t you been here before?”
“I was still in school when it was time to harvest rice and wheat every year.”
Jiang Zao shook her head. She saw a low, single-story building behind the main gate. The glass window was written with “Entry and Exit Registration.”
“Let’s go to the guardhouse and see if there’s a floor plan or keys or something. They’re usually kept there.”
Li Mi: “Big Sister Jiang, how do you know?”
Jiang Zao: “That’s how it’s usually played out in games or movies.”
A helpless smile appeared on Wen Zhao’s lips. Seeing that she was about to get up, she still held her wrist.
“I’ll go first. You follow me.”
In the guardhouse, Jiang Zao had searched almost all the drawers and cabinets but had not found any maps or keys. She couldn’t help but feel a little discouraged. “How can this be?”
Wen Zhao patted her shoulder and comforted her.
“It’s okay. It’s still early. Let’s go in and look.”
In the dormitory building behind the factory, half an eye was revealed behind a window, monitoring their every move.
“Boss, they’re in. Two pretty girls, they look great. And a little one. That dog is so fat. It’ll be enough for all of us to eat for a few days…”
The person on the walkie-talkie snorted coldly.
“Look at you, so spineless! Follow the plan!”
“Yes!”
The man waved his hand, and the few people behind him also picked up their weapons and quietly went out.
“A total of six zombies. I’m responsible for the three at the factory entrance. Little Zao and Little Mi are responsible for the three closest…”
Wen Zhao squatted in the guardhouse and calmly and thoroughly arranged the tactics. Both of them nodded heavily.
“Try not to make any noise. Let’s go.”
Jiang Zao gently pushed open a crack in the guardhouse door. A zombie was standing not far away with its back to her.
She tiptoed along the base of the wall, and with a sudden burst of energy, she drew an arrow from her quiver with her backhand, wrapped it around his neck, and stabbed it deep into his throat. A line of blood spurted out.
Jiang Zao gently placed the person on the ground.
Li Mi also did the same on her side, cleanly dealing with one with a dagger.
Just as the third zombie turned its head, Jiang Zao flashed behind a van, and at the same time, took out her bow from her back, quickly drew it, and before it could make a sound, a white feathered arrow was embedded in its temple.
Little Mi also rushed over at this moment, supported the falling zombie, and slowly placed it on the ground.
While they were clearing out the nearby zombies, Wen Zhao had also quietly crept to the factory entrance. Two zombies were standing face to face. A cold light from Mountain Stream Snow flashed, and one zombie’s head drooped loosely. Before the second zombie could roar, the snow-white blade had already passed through its throat.
Wen Zhao held one in each hand.
There was still one in front of the van.
A body in a blue work uniform was lying on the ground.
Just as she took a step forward, the body on the ground suddenly opened its eyes and sprang up, its neck biting at her leg.
Wen Zhao’s pupils shrank.
Before Mountain Stream Snow could swing down, a feathered arrow was embedded in the zombie’s head. Jiang Zao breathed a sigh of relief.
The zombie at the very front was also dealt with by Little Mi with a bow and arrow.
Wen Zhao couldn’t help but give her a thumbs-up.
Jiang Zao walked over, pulled out the arrow, wiped the blood from the arrowhead on the zombie’s clothes, spun it around, and inserted it back into her quiver.
“Let’s go.”
Li Mi bumped Wen Zhao, who was still standing there in a daze.
“What, were you impressed by Big Sister Jiang?”
Wen Zhao couldn’t help but clear her throat and also followed.
“It’s just that I haven’t seen your Big Sister Jiang in action for a long time.”
The side of her she had been seeing recently was a different one.
Jiang Zao belatedly came to her senses and also felt that her words were very ambiguous. Her ears turned slightly red, and she glared at her.
“We’re in the factory now. Concentrate.”
Li Mi raised her head and looked at the steel forest in this ruin. The falling snow particles fell from the skylight above, and a desolate and murderous feeling rushed towards her.
Fine dust floated in the air, and her nasal cavity was also filled with a foul musty smell mixed with the smell of rotting things.
A soft rustling sound.
Jiang Zao suddenly turned her head.
A rat fled into the darkness in a panic.
The already dim light of the rainy and snowy weather could not penetrate this cramped space. A beam of a flashlight cut through the darkness like dawn.
Wen Zhao held her hand and squeezed it gently.
“Don’t be afraid.”
Jiang Zao came to her senses. “I have a headlamp.”
She gave one to each of them, and also a mask.
Although the Pandora virus would not be transmitted through aerosols, the smell here was really too bad. It was not certain if there were any other viruses. With the current medical conditions, even a respiratory infection would be very troublesome.
The light from the three of them was enough to dispel the darkness in front of them. Wen Zhao walked in front, and Jiang Zao and Li Mi were half a step behind her. Kele was responsible for dealing with threats from the rear and the flanks. They maintained this tactical formation and moved forward back to back.
The factory looked small from the outside, but when they entered, they found that it was a different world. The factory was fully equipped with lathes and oil presses, and there were also some tables, chairs, and toilet paper scattered on the floor.
Wen Zhao was walking forward when she suddenly stopped and made a “stop” gesture to the back.
The three of them and a dog all squatted down.
Wen Zhao put her index finger on her lips, then changed her hand gesture and made a “three.” Jiang Zao nodded in understanding, took out her ice axe from her back, and slipped to the side.
Li Mi also took out her dagger.
Kele, on the other hand, crouched low.
The three of them, like ghosts, quietly crept up behind the zombies. Before they knew it, their throats were slit. After the three of them had dealt with the zombies, they gathered together again.
They had been fumbling in the dim workshop for more than half an hour and had already reached the end, but they still hadn’t found the warehouse.
