Qin Zheng lingered there at the headboard for a long moment before leaning down for a secret kiss. Then, like a thief in the night, she slipped away.
The sky was just beginning to lighten when Lu Zhixia woke with a full bladder. After a trip to the bathroom, she spotted the figure on the sofa.
Shen Wanqing’s breathing was steady and even; she looked fast asleep. In slumber, she was like Sleeping Beauty straight out of a fairy tale—so docile and soft, stirring a deep well of tenderness. Even asleep, Shen Wanqing was breathtakingly beautiful.
Lu Zhixia crouched beside her like a faithful big dog, gazing at her face.
That porcelain-pale skin took on a layer of midnight glow, hazy and gentle, stripped of its usual sharp pallor.
Her slightly flushed lips were especially captivating—plump, glossy, and shining with allure. Lu Zhixia couldn’t help licking her own lips; her mouth felt dry.
Beautiful prey like that had a way of making you greedy after staring too long, wondering just how sweet a single taste might be.
Lu Zhixia leaned in closer and caught the faintest whiff of udumbara—so subtle that even a slight pull back made it vanish.
To her, udumbara was just as addictive as ever. Once she’d breathed it in, she craved more.
Lu Zhixia closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. Her headache seemed to ease a little.
The wonderful pheromones were like the best medicine. After taking a few deep breaths, the throbbing misery of her hangover began to fade.
Lu Zhixia couldn’t help but get greedy. If only she could keep smelling that udumbara scent forever. If only it could be even stronger.
She glanced at the time. Dawn was still hours away, so she simply leaned against the edge of the sofa, shifting this way and that until she found a comfortable position. In the end, she lay on her side, resting her head in the spot left vacant at Shen Wanqing’s waist.
With every breath came the udumbara, and the position was cozy. Eyes closed, she decided she’d just lie there for a bit.
Lu Zhixia had overestimated her willpower. Before long, she drifted off to sleep.
In the dim night, the other woman slowly opened her eyes. Shen Wanqing gazed at the girl sleeping soundly with her head tilted, then reached out to gently stroke her hair.
She already knew it was progress that Lu Zhixia had chased her all the way from the bedroom to here.
All things required patience, especially when shaping someone into the person you envisioned.
It was a two-way process of adjustment and change, and Shen Wanqing found it rather enjoyable. Her fingertip traced the high bridge of that straight nose.
Lu Zhixia twitched at the tickle, batted at the air with her hand, and went right back to snoring softly.
As dawn gradually broke, Shen Wanqing faintly heard movement from Yan Fanghua’s room.
Reluctant as she was, she lifted her leg and gave a not-too-light, not-too-heavy kick—thud—right into Lu Zhixia’s shoulder.
Lu Zhixia woke in a daze, feeling like she’d been booted. She stared at the “culprit” with wide, aggrieved, and utterly innocent eyes.
After staring for what felt like forever with no reaction, she sat up indignantly. Her gaze landed on her mother’s lipstick sitting on the table, and a mischievous idea sparked.
She picked it up and carefully smeared it across Shen Wanqing’s lips, turning that pretty little cherry mouth into a comically oversized clown grin.
Giggling uncontrollably as she drew, Lu Zhixia muttered, “That’ll teach you for kicking me. Yeah, that’ll teach you.” She clutched the lipstick tube, aiming for the center of those brows to dot it right on the forehead, twisting the tube for more product—when Shen Wanqing’s eyes suddenly flew open.
Startled, she bolted to make a run for it. But Shen Wanqing was quicker; she grabbed her wrist, yanked her back, and pinned her down beneath her.
“I’ll show you what happens when you draw on me. Now it’s your turn.” Shen Wanqing pinched her chin and leaned in close.
The next second, Lu Zhixia instinctively squeezed her eyes shut. But instead of a kiss, Shen Wanqing suddenly rolled over, dragging her along until Lu Zhixia ended up straddling her.
A sharp cry rang out from behind: “You stop that right now!”
Lu Zhixia snapped back to reality. Her mom was storming over with a fierce glare. She glanced down at the woman beneath her, who wore a smug, triumphant smile.
In the end, Lu Zhixia endured a stern lecture from her own mother.
They’d only just become family through marriage, and here she was, bold as brass, roughhousing on top of her big sister first thing in the morning—not to mention defacing her with lipstick. Utterly outrageous.
To make matters worse, Shen Wanqing kept coming to her defense from the sidelines, graciously insisting over and over: It was fine. She must’ve just been half-asleep.
Yan Fanghua unleashed a torrent of traditional virtues education before heading to the kitchen to make breakfast.
Lu Zhixia was so furious her eyes turned red. She hung her head and shuffled off to the bathroom.
Shen Wanqing knocked on the door, but there was no response.
She went back to her room to freshen up. By the time she emerged, Lu Zhixia was gone.
Yan Fanghua noticed something was off too. She sighed helplessly. “See? What did I tell you? That girl’s got a temper like nobody’s business.”
Shen Wanqing stayed to have breakfast with Yan Fanghua and Qin Zheng. Then she reassured her: “Go ahead with your day. I’ll go find her.”
Shen Wanqing picked up breakfast on her way to the office. Sure enough, Lu Zhixia had already left the schedule on her desk.
She twisted the doorknob—locked. Clearly still fuming.
Using her key, Shen Wanqing let herself in. Lu Zhixia’s eyes were puffy and red. She shot her a glance, then dropped her gaze.
Shen Wanqing set down the breakfast. In a calm tone, she said, “You can be mad all you want, but you still have to eat. I suggest you take a moment to reflect on who started all this.”
Shen Wanqing didn’t coax her. Lu Zhixia skipped breakfast. She skipped lunch too.
Young people always loved picking fights with their own bodies—and themselves.
Lu Zhixia stayed mad because later, she realized Shen Wanqing was right. She’d been the one in the wrong from the very start.
She was the one who’d peeked at Shen Wanqing first. Slept next to her first. Smeared lipstick on her first…
That awkward, frustrated mood lingered all the way to the end of the workday. She’d stayed late sorting the key points from the executive meeting for Shen Wanqing, not clocking out until seven.
Yan Fanghua had called at noon; she’d ignored it. Now it rang again. She hung up and texted back: Working late. I’m fine.
Yan Fanghua reminded her to eat properly. She replied: Got it.
A textbook tool-person response. Lu Zhixia finished compiling the notes and sent them over LT.
Then, as usual, she messaged Shen Wanqing: President Shen, I’m off now.
Sirius: Hold on.
Lu Zhixia packed her things and waited patiently.
A few minutes later, Shen Wanqing pushed open the door. Lu Zhixia stood, her tone unusually formal. “President Shen, was there something else?”
Shen Wanqing stepped inside, closed the door—click—locked it.
Lu Zhixia blinked in surprise as Shen Wanqing strode to the main entrance and locked that one too.
“President Shen, what are you doing?” Lu Zhixia asked warily.
Shen Wanqing stood in the doorway. She rolled up her sleeves and undid the button at her collar.
Lu Zhixia watched in bewilderment as Shen tilted her head from side to side, loosening her joints. Then, with a sudden flick of her hand, she switched off the lights.
Darkness swallowed the room in an instant. The curtains blocked out any hint of light, leaving Lu Zhixia blind. She backed up until she hit the wall.
Shen Wanqing’s footsteps drew closer. Then, in a fluid leap, she vaulted onto Lu Zhixia’s desk, landing with the grace of a cat.
A rush of air from an incoming punch whistled past Lu Zhixia’s face. She dodged and snapped, “Shen Wanqing! What the hell are you doing?”
“Let’s fight it out,” Shen Wanqing said, dropping from the desk and closing the distance between them. She grinned. “One round if that’ll cool things off. Two if it won’t. We keep going until you’re satisfied.”
Lu Zhixia bristled, all the pent-up frustration of the day boiling over. She shot back coldly, “Fine. Loser’s a dog!”
They clashed in a flurry of motion, trading blows back and forth. Shen Wanqing moved with effortless precision, while Lu Zhixia pressed the attack relentlessly.
In the pitch-black room, the sounds of crashing furniture echoed sporadically—chairs scraping, desks thudding.
The tussle dragged on endlessly until Lu Zhixia’s strength finally gave out. She slumped against the edge of the desk, chest heaving as she gasped for breath.
Shen Wanqing charged straight at her. But just as she closed in, she twisted her ankle somehow and tumbled forward right into Lu Zhixia’s arms.
“You okay?” Lu Zhixia instinctively caught her, pulling her close. Her waist bumped against the desk edge as she leaned back, nearly sprawling across the surface.
Both women were breathing hard. Shen Wanqing lay draped over Lu Zhixia’s chest, her hands braced on the desk to either side.
Their position grew increasingly awkward. Shen Wanqing had Lu Zhixia pinned against the desk in an intimate wall-slam. Lu Zhixia’s gaze was drawn irresistibly to the expanse of pale skin exposed at her collar.
She jerked her head away. Shen Wanqing leaned in closer, her breasts pressing against Lu Zhixia’s. Her warm breath tickled Lu Zhixia’s ear as she murmured, “Feeling better now?” The last word faded against her earlobe.
The air was thick with the scent of Udumbara. Lu Zhixia lost it completely—her gland surged to life.
In a flash, she flipped them over, pinning Shen Wanqing down and gripping her shoulders tight. “Marking you is what’ll calm me down.”
“Have you lost your mind?” Shen Wanqing’s heart pounded wildly. “This is the office.”
“Yeah, and I’m a crazy dog,” Lu Zhixia whispered, leaning down to ghost her lips along Shen Wanqing’s ear just as she had. “Doesn’t that make it even more exciting?”
