Shen Ke was woken up by the heat.
Her whole body felt like it was on fire, scorching her to the point of alarm.
She opened her eyes and got out of bed in a daze, wanting to find some water to drink.
Why was it so hot?
She went to the living room, poured herself a glass of water, and gulped down a big mouthful. Shen Ke caught her breath and touched her cheek. “Why is it so hot?”
It did not feel like a fever; it was just pure heat that turned her brain to mush. It had to be a problem with the pill from the System! Damn System!
Shen Ke inwardly grumbled nonstop. She poured and drank two more glasses of water with a clatter. In her hazy state, she heard a knock at the door.
Shen Ke froze for a moment and glanced at the clock on the wall. It was already approaching twelve o’clock. Who could it be so late?
She clenched her fists and slowly shuffled toward the door. Shen Ke took a deep breath and peered through the peephole.
Through the peephole, Shen Yi’s beautiful face, stained with blood, appeared before her eyes.
Shen Ke’s eyes widened, and she instinctively wanted to hide.
But Shen Yi seemed to know she was there. She lifted her eyelids, her thin lips curving slightly. “Little Ke, open the door.”
Shen Ke could not hear her, of course, but she could make out the simple lip movements.
Shen Ke frowned tightly, her muddled brain working hard. If she did not open the door, would Shen Yi get angry? Would she go find a key?
Answering her own question, Shen Ke decided Shen Yi would not get angry, but she would definitely get a key.
She puffed out her cheeks and unwillingly opened the door.
Shen Yi swept into the room, bringing a chill with her.
Shen Ke had no strength left. She was still so hot, and the heat showed no signs of fading.
“Sister, what are, what are you doing here?”
Shen Yi did not answer. Instead, she reached out toward Shen Ke.
Seeing this, Shen Ke shrank back instinctively. “No, don’t.” Her resistance and fear were plain as day.
Shen Yi’s movements paused imperceptibly for a second. Her gaze darkened slightly as she placed her hand on Shen Ke’s forehead. “You have a fever?”
“Go to the hospital.”
The scorching forehead suddenly met Shen Yi’s ice-cold palm. Shen Ke squinted in comfort. So cool, it felt so good.
“I don’t have a fever.” Shen Ke’s words came out slurred, sounding overly sweet and soft.
Shen Yi’s eyelids drooped halfway, her tone growing heavier. “Go to the hospital.”
Shen Ke’s expression changed instantly, turning fierce and vicious. Her cheeks were flushed red, her eyes misty, but she looked utterly menacing. “I’m not going to the hospital! If you don’t listen to me, I’ll slap you!”
After shouting, Shen Ke realized the person in front of her was not Shi Xu, but Shen Yi.
She did not know if it was because her whole body was burning up, but it had fried her brain too. She had actually yelled at Shen Yi.
Shen Ke’s eyelashes trembled violently. She dodged Shen Yi’s touch and sat down on the sofa. “Anyway, this isn’t a fever! I’m not going to the hospital!”
Shen Yi stood there for a moment before coming over to sit beside Shen Ke. An icy aura instantly enveloped her.
Shen Ke pursed her lips. The cold touch of Shen Yi’s hand seemed to linger on her forehead.
Normally, she would find it terrifying—Shen Yi was human, yet her body temperature was abnormally low. But right now, she desperately wanted Shen Yi to touch her again.
Shen Yi softly called her name. “Shen Ke.”
This was the first time Shen Yi had called her full name. Shen Ke bit her lower lip, a sense of wariness rising in her heart. If Shen Yi tried to do anything to her now, she had no strength to resist.
Shen Yi reached out and grasped Shen Ke’s wrist. With a gentle tug, Shen Ke fell into her arms.
She had noticed it the moment she first saw Shen Ke—her movements were sluggish, her steps unsteady, swaying as she walked. She was clearly in a weakened state.
Shen Ke truly had no strength to even struggle. She fell into Shen Yi’s cold embrace and slowly closed her eyes. Her dizzy mind could not think; she only instinctively absorbed the chill.
“Like, like.”
Shen Ke no longer knew what she was saying. She just kept repeating it.
Hearing the coquettish “like” whispered in her ear, Shen Yi lowered her gaze. She reached out to press the back of Shen Ke’s head, pulling their bodies tightly together. In a soft voice, she said, “You don’t like me. You’re resisting me.”
What exactly constituted loving someone?
She had never loved anyone. She could not come up with an answer.
Time passed slowly. Shen Yi heard even breathing by her ear. She noticed that the heat from Shen Ke’s body had gone down.
She gently released Shen Ke, letting her lie on the sofa with her head pillowed on her thigh. Shen Yi lowered her eyes, gazing at Shen Ke’s cheek. Her fingers brushed over Shen Ke’s rosy lips. “Perhaps I was wrong from the very beginning.”
She should not have gone to Shen Ke’s school that afternoon, should not have shared the same space with her.
She had always thought Shen Ke’s tears were the trigger, but in truth, Shen Ke herself was the trigger.
From the moment Shen Ke had thrown herself into her arms that day, her heart had quietly gone out of control.
That night, Shen Yi sat on the sofa for a very, very long time. No one knew what she was thinking.
The night passed, and daylight arrived.
Shen Ke jolted awake. She trembled as she looked down and saw her pajamas still properly on. “Phew—” She let out a huge sigh of relief. Only then did she notice she was lying on the bed.
A thin blanket covered her. She looked around—no sign of Shen Yi anywhere. But on the table were fever reducers and some cold medicine.
Shen Ke’s brows relaxed. She had not expected this lunatic Shen Yi to do nothing to her.
Every time they met, Shen Yi looked like she wanted to devour her whole.
Shen Ke stretched lazily and felt a cool sensation at her neck. She looked down to see a beautiful Blue Sapphire Butterfly Pendant.
Shen Ke’s lips parted slightly. She took off the necklace and examined it closely in her hand. “So pretty.” She liked shiny, gorgeous accessories like this.
But it was obvious Shen Yi had put it on her.
Recalling last night, Shen Ke remembered the moment she opened the door and saw Shen Yi. The first thing she felt was an indescribable loneliness—not overwhelming, but undeniably there.
Shen Yi had been sad at that moment.
Shen Ke gripped the necklace tightly and put it in the drawer. She shook her head. Why was she thinking about Shen Yi for no reason?
But the side effects of the System’s medicine were too strong. Last night, she had been so hot and exhausted, her head all fuzzy, yet she remembered everything that happened.
She had yelled at Shen Yi and even fallen asleep in her arms.
Shen Ke scrunched up her little face and complained out loud, “Ugh! It’s all the damn System’s fault for that medicine!” If it did not work, she would be super mad!
Shen Ke got out of bed and went to the bathroom to look in the mirror.
The mirror reflected a tender, beautiful face.
Her eyes were large, the corners upturned, with thick lashes that looked like they had eyeliner—pure yet alluring. Her nose was small, perky, and three-dimensional. Her lips were plump but not thick, looking soft and extremely kissable.
Shen Ke gave a small smile. She noticed her skin was as smooth and delicate as a peeled egg, flawless without a single pore.
Her skin had always been good before, but never this translucent. Shen Ke could not help but praise herself. “Shen Ke is a total beauty! I’m falling in love with myself.”
Rest days always passed quickly. In the blink of an eye, it was Monday again.
Shen Ke got out of the car and walked toward the school gate. Shi Xu parked the car and hurried to catch up.
“Baby, let me carry your backpack for you!”
Shen Ke stopped and turned back, huffing. “If you’re going to carry it, hurry up.”
Shi Xu’s mouth had just begun to curve into a grin when a figure flashed by. Someone beat her to it and took Shen Ke’s backpack.
Yue Lingqing took Shen Ke’s backpack steadily and said in a tone of enthusiasm that did not match her cool appearance at all, “She doesn’t live in the same building as you. I’ll carry it for you, Shen Ke.”
Shen Ke did not care who carried it; it was just a backpack.
“Whatever.”
Shi Xu’s expression turned ugly. “Baby, how can you let an outsider carry your things? Even if it’s just a backpack, no.”
Yue Lingqing turned to face Shi Xu and sneered coldly. “You’re the outsider here, aren’t you? The discarded old thing.”
The atmosphere between them grew tense. Shen Ke could not be bothered and walked ahead with a pout.
Seeing this, Shi Xu and Yue Lingqing hurried after her, bickering the whole way behind Shen Ke.
Shen Ke could not stand listening to it. She stopped, turned around, glared at them, and kicked each of them in the shin. “Are you kids or what?! Blah blah blah, so annoying!”
Shi Xu immediately turned pitiful. “Baby, can you just kick me and not her?”
Yue Lingqing mocked, “If you like being abused, go boxing instead of saying creepy things to harass people.”
Just as they were about to start arguing again, Shen Ke’s little brows furrowed. She was unhappy. “So annoying! If you keep this up, don’t walk with me anymore!”
At those words, they both fell silent instantly.
Shen Ke nodded in satisfaction. Then, a slightly hoarse call came from beside her. “Shen, Ke.”
Shen Ke whipped her head around, her expression turning fierce. “Feng Jian! Who said you could call me?!”
Feng Jian lowered her head and offered the candy in her hand. “I-I just, just wanted to, to give this to you.”
Shen Ke glanced at it. She loved this candy, but it was not available domestically; she had to go to Country F to buy it. She had not had it in ages.
Shen Ke slapped Feng Jian’s hand away. “Are you showing off?! I hate you!”
With that, Shen Ke turned and walked away, clearly not wanting to spend another second with Feng Jian.
Shi Xu scoffed lightly. “Baby is so easy to coax, yet she hates you this much. If you had any brains, you wouldn’t approach her anymore.” She then hurried to catch up with Shen Ke.
Yue Lingqing just shook her head lightly and said nothing more.
Feng Jian, left behind, slowly raised her head. She stared at Shen Ke’s back, her narrow eyes filled with overwhelming obsession—unhidden, paranoid, and sickly.
Shen Ke—
Someone who accidentally glanced at her quickly looked away in horror.
Meanwhile, at the System Headquarters.
All sorts of systems crowded around a screen, chattering noisily.
“No way, Blackening Value at 50%? I remember the female lead in this Novice World is a true kind and beautiful soul. Even with her disability and inferiority complex, she faces her flaws in the later stages and becomes strong and resilient.”
“Wow, which system’s newbie tasker did this to the world? How did they mess up the female lead like this?”
“I think it’s 000’s new recruit. 000 should’ve checked more closely. But Blackening Value at 50% should be fine, right? It’s only 50.”
“You idiot, in this world’s lore, the female lead isn’t supposed to have any Blackening Value at all. But now she does, so when the time comes—”
“Everyone, disperse! The team leader said as long as there’s no world collapse, the female lead’s Blackening Value won’t rise anymore!”
Shen Ke was unaware of these matters for now.
Her days settled into the ordinary. After that night, Shen Yi seemed to vanish, never appearing before her again.
She also stopped coming to her rental to disturb her.
Sometimes after school, though, she would see Shen Yu standing across the street from the school gate. She would glance at Shen Ke and then leave.
On the way to school, Shi Xu and Yue Lingqing always bickered behind her. If she turned her head, she could see Feng Jian watching them intently.
Once caught, a blush appeared on Feng Jian’s pale, pretty face. She averted her gaze and bowed her head.
It was just like the first time Shen Ke had threatened her under the tree.
So timid she dared not look at her, tensing up at the slightest touch—such an honest, cowardly girl.
But now, Feng Jian gave her a strong sense of dissonance.
An inexplicable strangeness.
Still, Shen Ke did not pay it much mind. Feng Jian was not shoving herself in her face, after all.
Days passed in a mix of ordinary and extraordinary. Time seemed to fast-forward, and before she knew it, winter break had arrived.
The Engagement Banquet with Yue Lingqing was now just three days away.
