Chapter 44: The Fool Who Abandoned His Wife and Child in the Apocalypse (Part 14)

“Captain Zhao, there’s a zombie eating up ahead.”

Zhao Qinghe heard her teammate say this, and she fixed her gaze outside the window. Sure enough, in the distance, a zombie sat on the ground, clutching an arm and gnawing on it.

Zhao Qinghe chuckled. “Perfect chance to test how this gun feels.” Ever since leaving Silver Mang Base, she had been using other guns along the way. This zombie was far enough away that she could try out the new one. “Looks like it’s enjoying its meal.” With that, Zhao Qinghe shouldered the rifle, peered through the scope, and centered her sight on the white dot—which was aimed right at the zombie’s head.

The zombie’s head swayed dramatically as it ate, making it hard to line up the shot. Zhao Qinghe counted the beats in her mind, then her eyes flashed. She yanked the trigger.

“Bang!”

Not even two seconds later, the head of the feeding zombie in the distance exploded.

Its grayish-white body slumped to the ground.

Zhao Qinghe raised an eyebrow. “Not bad.”

The teammates laughed and praised her. “As expected of Captain Zhao. Your marksmanship is spot on—you can even headshot from inside the vehicle.”

Zhao Qinghe stowed the gun and pulled her gaze back from the distance. “It has to be. Otherwise, I’d be a lousy captain for you all.”

“Step on it. We need to reach Dawn Base early.”

The driver teased, “Got it, Captain Zhao. Don’t worry, I’ll get you reunited with your little sister in no time. Hahaha.”

Zhao Qinghe shook her head with an amused smile. “I’m not here for my sister.” She turned to look out the window. The military-green armored vehicle drove past the spot where the zombie had just been killed. From the corner of her eye, Zhao Qinghe got a clear look at the person the zombie had been gnawing on.

It looked like a young person fresh out of school, but now their stomach had a massive gash, their body was soaked in blood, and one arm had been gnawed down to the bone.

There was no life left in them at all.

She couldn’t sense any vital signs from the young person. Zhao Qinghe’s expression darkened. No matter how many times she saw scenes like this, she could never get used to them.

The sun gradually set. After the sweltering day came a frigid night, with temperatures so low they seemed to freeze the very air.

The room where Shen Ke was confined was built underground. When Wen Su emerged from the lab, the sky was dark and misty, oppressively heavy.

In conditions like these, even those who didn’t die would be driven mad.

A soft voice came from nearby. “Leader Wen, we’ve arranged for the people from Silver Mang Base.”

“When do you have time to meet them?”

Wen Su adjusted her glasses. The black frames gave her an almost honest, scholarly look. She turned to the speaker and said slowly, “In a couple of days.”

“Bring them to the conference room on the fifth floor then.”

The speaker let out a relieved breath, as if granted amnesty, and hurried away.

Wen Su didn’t stop them. She slipped her hands into her coat pockets and exhaled softly. Her breath formed a puff of white mist in the air.

She had come here at first just to have a lab of her own. But the base’s original leader hadn’t been too keen on that, so she had no choice but to kill him and take over as leader herself.

Unexpectedly, being leader came with far more power than she’d imagined. To keep these people working for her, she handled things appropriately when needed.

By the time she returned to where Shen Ke was staying, it was already the early hours of the morning.

Wen Su took off her coat, which carried the chill, walked to the bedside, and gazed at the sleeping Shen Ke. She hooked her lips into a silent smile.

She liked skin-to-skin contact with Shen Ke even more than she’d thought. Of course, she didn’t think it was skin hunger. She just liked Shen Ke too much.

She wanted to touch her every moment of every day.

The air in the small room was warm. Wen Su lifted the covers off Shen Ke and saw her lying there in a white, semi-sheer gauze dress. Without the covers, it didn’t seem to bother her at all.

Her beautiful face was flushed pink, fair skin glowing red—a sight that was utterly captivating.

Wen Su lifted the hem of the dress and rolled it up to Shen Ke’s collarbone. She leaned down to Shen Ke’s ear and whispered softly, “Shen Ke, wake up.”

But Shen Ke just pouted, showing no sign of waking. She slept deeply.

Wen Su tilted her head and kissed Shen Ke’s lips. Her voice carried a smiling, magnetic lilt. “I admit I have a bit of a wicked streak.” She wanted to see if she could wake Shen Ke this way.

Maybe she could blindfold her too. With that thought, Wen Su took out a strip of cloth and draped it over Shen Ke’s eyes. Her fingers slid between Shen Ke’s head and the pillow, gently lifting her head to tie it slowly.

Finally, she bound Shen Ke’s hands in front of her, squeezing her breasts into a deep cleavage.

But Shen Ke remained oblivious to it all.

Once finished, Wen Su leaned down and rubbed her nose against Shen Ke’s. “You sleep so soundly.” She wasn’t sure if it was trust or just a big heart.

“You’re clearly asleep, but your ass is wiggling to meet me.”

“So lewd, Shen Ke.”

“Uh…”

Shen Ke felt so strange. Hadn’t she been asleep?

Why were her sensations so intense?

Shen Ke let out a sharp cry, her body trembling violently.

Wen Su stuck out her tongue and licked her slick fingertips. It seemed Shen Ke had finally woken up.

Shen Ke opened her eyes to pitch blackness. It wasn’t a lack of light—her eyes were covered.

Her fingers clenched instinctively, and her heart tightened. Not only were her eyes bound, but her hands were too. In a trembling voice, she called out, “Wen… Wen Su, is that you?”

Wen Su narrowed her eyes and lowered her voice to a raspy, unpleasant rasp right by Shen Ke’s ear. “No.”

Shen Ke’s throat felt parched. This wasn’t Wen Su’s voice at all!!!

It didn’t match anyone she’d ever heard.

Had some stranger snuck in while she was sleeping and done this to her?

Without sight, her other senses sharpened intensely.

She was being invaded again.

The string in Shen Ke’s mind snapped. She burst into tears. “No!”

She didn’t mind doing it, but she did mind doing it with someone whose face she didn’t know.

What if it was some ugly monster? She didn’t want to do it with an ugly monster!!!

As she thought this, Shen Ke felt utterly wronged. She’d assumed only Wen Su could come here, but now a stranger had been let in.

Wen Su stayed silent, feeling Shen Ke clench around her. She couldn’t tell if it was fear or tension.

With no response, Shen Ke sobbed. “Do you even know who my wife is?”

“She’s the leader of Dawn Base.”

“I advise you—ah—to get out now, or—uh—you’ll regret it!”

Shen Ke tried desperately to hold back her voice, but this person knew exactly where to touch her for pleasure. Her words came out high and low, completely off-pitch.

Wen Su leaned close to Shen Ke’s ear, still rasping. “No problem. I’ve already gotten what I wanted anyway.”

Shen Ke wanted to curse, but in that instant of closeness, she caught a familiar scent—the distinctive chemical potion smell unique to Wen Su.

It wasn’t pleasant or unpleasant, but highly recognizable.

Shen Ke bit her lower lip, her willow brows furrowing. If the cloth over her eyes were removed right then, one would surely see her cat-like eyes glaring round with fury.

Fine! Damn Wen Su! Pretending to be a stranger!

Heh!

Shen Ke clenched her fists hard. “If that’s how it is, then I won’t resist. Not like I could anyway.”

Shen Ke began actively twisting her waist and hips, parting her red lips as lewd gasps spilled out.

“Mm, you’re a bit—ah—better than my wife.”

Wen Su froze, her smile fading. “Oh?”

Shen Ke arched her chest. “You make my little hole feel so good.”

Such wanton movements, such wanton words.

Wen Su’s eyes darkened profoundly. She flipped Shen Ke over and bit down hard on the back of her neck.

It wasn’t deep, but Shen Ke sensed the frustrated fury.

Wen Su always seemed so effortlessly in control around her. She couldn’t escape Wen Su, but occasionally making her squirm felt good.

Shen Ke sneered inwardly. Heh, serves you right!

“Ah, darling, faster.” Shen Ke’s voice grew softer, sweeter, like she was making love to her most intimate partner.

Shen Ke meant to rile Wen Su up, but she overlooked one thing: Wen Su wasn’t normal.

“Wen Su—ah—mm… please, haah—let me go.”

“So Little Cat figured it out ages ago. Naughty girl, I was this close to dying of jealousy.”

That night, Shen Ke didn’t close her eyes again.

“Ah Qi, is Shen Ke really still alive?” Zhao Qinghe asked nervously.

Zhao Qi handed her a cup of water, then plopped down on the bed. “Sis, she’s really alive. Stop worrying about her.” Thinking of the sight of Shen Ke covered in neck hickeys and being held by someone, Zhao Qi felt her face heat up, though her expression was one of impatience. “She hooked up with Qu Xi, the A-rank ability user here. She’s living the good life.”

Zhao Qinghe stared at the rippling water in the glass and pursed her lips. “What about her wife and child?”

Zhao Qi dug in her ear. “Dead. Probably in the zombie tide at Crimson Base.”

Zhao Qi was a bit speechless. How long had it been since she last saw her sister? And the first thing they talked about was Shen Ke.

“Sis, why do you care so much about Shen Ke?”

Zhao Qinghe’s gaze dimmed. She sighed softly and said slowly, “She pursued me back then.”

Zhao Qi shot up from the bed in shock. “Pursued you???”

Zhao Qinghe took a sip of water. “Yeah. That’s why I left the base.”

“Shen Ke had a wife and kid. No matter what, I couldn’t be the third wheel breaking up a family.”

Zhao Qi tugged at her hair in frustration. Her sister’s meaning was crystal clear. To say something like that meant she had feelings for that awful Shen Ke.

Her sister was perfect in every way, just too rigid. In the apocalypse, no one knew if they’d survive to see tomorrow, yet she still clung to morals and ethics.

No, wait—this wasn’t the time to think about that!!! The bigger issue was that her sister liked Shen Ke!

Zhao Qi didn’t know what to say. After stewing for a while, she blurted out a curse. “Fuck!” She flopped back onto the bed. “Sis, let’s sleep for now. Aren’t you meeting Dawn Base’s leader tomorrow?”

“Get some rest.” She was afraid she’d burst a blood vessel if they kept talking about this.

Zhao Qinghe sighed inwardly. She never should have left Crimson Base.

If she’d accepted Shen Ke’s pursuit back then, Shen Ke wouldn’t be under someone else’s roof now.

Though Zhao Qi had only mentioned it briefly.

She knew that for Shen Ke to latch onto a powerful ability user, it meant selling her body.

That sort of thing happened in every base.

Plenty of people got played to death by ability users.

Shen Ke was beautiful, but her temper was the polar opposite—terribly bad.

But there was no use thinking about it now. She could only go find Shen Ke after finishing tomorrow’s talks.

The sky darkened, then brightened again, but Shen Ke, confined in the room, had no sense of time.

She was so exhausted she couldn’t even lift a finger.

It felt like everything down there had swollen into two steamed buns.

Shen Ke’s head swam hazily. Through her blurry vision, she looked at Wen Su.

Then her gaze drifted lower. Why hadn’t Wen Su swollen up?

Maybe because they’d only rubbed against each other.

“Wen Su, you’re getting back at me, aren’t you?” Shen Ke murmured lowly.

Wen Su hummed in agreement and kissed her forehead. “Yeah. And later, you’re coming out with me.”

“Don’t try to run, or the next punishment will be even worse.”

Run? The word held no appeal for Shen Ke now.

She just wanted to sleep.

So tired, so tired.

“I don’t wanna go out. I’m exhausted.” Shen Ke mumbled softly, unconsciously coquettish.

Wen Su chuckled lightly. When Shen Ke spoke like that, it gave her the illusion that they loved each other.

She wondered if Shen Ke was starting to like her a little.

After all, love could be faked too.

In every world, there was such a type of character. They bullied the protagonist, framed the protagonist, and kept courting death right in front of the protagonist. Shen Ke had to play these roles. [World One: The Fake Young Lady in a Wealthy Family] Shen Ke was the fake young lady who had taken someone else's identity. Later, the real young lady was found back, and everyone pitied the real young lady. Shen Ke grew jealous of her and frantically framed her until one day the truth came out. Everyone's gazes turned to her. Shen Ke was chased out of the Shen Family. However, what no one expected was that those heavenly daughters, who should have despised her to the extreme, lowered their proud heads and begged her to return. [World Two: The Little Follower in an Aristocratic School] Tesiya Aristocratic School had four top figures, and Shen Ke was the Little Follower of one of them. Every day, she bullied others using that person's power. Seeing those people seemingly intimidated by her and not daring to look at her, Shen Ke grew even more smug. Little did she know, those people were simply charmed by her cuteness and harbored dark fantasies in secret. But because of those four people's statuses, they didn't dare to act too much. Shen Ke had no idea about this. Every day, she strutted around like a proud little rooster until one day, a Special Admission Student slammed her hard onto the ground. Shen Ke burst into tears. The Special Admission Student panicked and held her in her arms, coaxing, "Don't cry. I didn't mean to. How about you hit me back?" [World Three: The Social Butterfly in the Slums] Shen Ke came from a poor family. Her father was in prison, and her mother had died early. She was forced to grow up quickly and smiled at everyone, becoming the social butterfly everyone despised. Shen Ke had been jealous of her childhood sweetheart since childhood. They both lived in the slums, but her childhood sweetheart had loving parents and later found a rich partner. Shen Ke came up with a scheme. She seduced her childhood sweetheart's partner and used her to enter the upper circles. Everyone in the upper circles knew Shen Ke, the little social butterfly from the slums. They verbally expressed disdain for her, but in private, they fought each other to the death over this little social butterfly. Her childhood sweetheart, whose partner she had seduced, pinned her in a corner and kissed her ear. "Keke, I've been waiting so long for you to come. Why didn't you come seduce me?" [World Four: The Stupid Bastard in the Apocalypse Who Killed Her Wife and Abandoned Her Child] The apocalypse arrived. To survive, Shen Ke pushed her wife into a zombie horde and then abandoned her seven-year-old child. She latched onto an Ability User and was brought back to the base. However, the moment she saw the base leader, Shen Ke's face turned pale. That leader was none other than the wife she had killed. The moment the leader grabbed her by the neck, Shen Ke cried uncontrollably. "Please, let me go." But the leader chuckled softly. "Let you go? I'm afraid not. Someone as wicked as you is only suited to be locked in bed for life." [World Five: The Lawless Dandy Eldest Miss.] There was a famous dandy in Upper Yan City: the Eldest Miss of the Prime Minister's Mansion, Shen Ke. That Shen Ke bullied men and dominated women, committing all kinds of evil, until one day the Prime Minister's Mansion was raided. The woman Shen Ke had forcibly taken as a wife turned out to be the exiled Imperial Princess. The Shen Family's crimes piled up even higher. Shen Ke could only plead tearfully with those people she had previously looked down on. Those people had originally despised Shen Ke to the extreme, but in the instant those teary eyes looked over, a different kind of thought arose in their hearts. "Want me to help you? Sure, become my bed warmer."
