Chapter 4: Newbie Village
Everyone stared blankly at Jiang Yu’s words. Although they understood what she meant, it took them a moment to process it.
The young man asked hesitantly, “What… what do you mean, review?”
He knew you could review a game after a match, but in a situation like this, where they hadn’t experienced or explored anything yet, could they really do a review?
Jiang Yu looked around at the group. “Since our task is to find an ‘imposter,’ we have to use information to make deductions.”
“Since waking up, we’ve only been panicking about our environment, the driver, and the situation outside. We haven’t had any in-depth conversations, nor have we exchanged any information.”
“So, in that respect, we’re completely in the dark.”
“Right now, our priority is to exchange information and try to find clues from what everyone shares. We also need to recall what each person has done since waking up.”
Jiang Yu’s expression remained unchanged. Her long eyelashes, like ink-dyed feathers, fluttered gently, hiding some of the emotion in her eyes.
“After all, the veteran must have been in the same environment as us from the very beginning. So…”
“If they revealed anything early on, that would be a crucial piece of information for us.”
Seeing that everyone was listening quietly, Jiang Yu breathed a sigh of relief.
Her biggest fear was that everyone would panic, become suspicious, and start making wild accusations. That could easily turn a winnable situation into a complete mess.
Now that everyone was calm, it meant they were at least thinking rationally for the moment, which made things much easier.
After hearing Jiang Yu’s analysis and plan, the others unconsciously relaxed.
In a situation where they were all at a loss, having someone to take charge and point them in the right direction was crucial. Even though that person… could also be the “imposter,” having a goal was better than having none at all.
The bald man rubbed his head. “Alright then, let’s get started.”
The college student was still shaken, terrified that she had almost been voted out.
At the thought, she shot a hateful glare at the middle-aged woman, convinced that there was definitely something wrong with her.
Everyone was scared of being pulled into an unlimited world, but no one had broken down as completely as the middle-aged woman.
Plus, the way she had so eagerly tried to drag her down… it all added to the college student’s suspicion.
Everyone returned to their original positions.
The professional woman said, “When I woke up, I was in this spot.”
The young man nodded in agreement.
Jiang Yu said, “Then let’s go in order.”
First up was the professional woman, who was in the front seat on the right.
In some ways, the professional woman’s reactions were very similar to Jiang Yu’s. Jiang Yu couldn’t tell if she was genuinely this calm, if it was an act, or if she had some other identity. So, as the woman spoke, Jiang Yu watched her intently.
The professional woman began, “My name is Lin Hui. I’m almost thirty, and as you can see, I’m a working professional, an office worker.”
“I encountered this app on my phone before. To be honest, I thought it was a virus at first. When I couldn’t uninstall it, I just ignored it.”
“Getting a phone repaired takes time, and my work is busy. I don’t have that kind of time to spare.”
“Besides, I use my phone for both personal and work matters. Sending it for repairs would just delay my work.”
At this, the young man seemed to find a flaw in her story. “But you could have just bought a new phone,” he challenged. “Then you’d just have to swap the SIM card.”
Lin Hui rolled her eyes in annoyance. “Excuse me, are you going to pay for the new phone?”
“…” The young man argued back, “Didn’t you say you were worried it was a virus? If you use that phone for company business, weren’t you afraid the virus would steal your company’s data?”
Lin Hui couldn’t be bothered with him. “Stop twisting my words. I’m not wasting my breath on you.”
The young man, feeling he had found a loophole in her story, just snorted. “Not wasting your breath, or too scared to answer my question?”
He looked at the others. “Everyone, be the judge. In this situation, she’s worried the app is a virus, but she insists on using the phone for company matters. Isn’t that suspicious? This person must be lying!”
The young man’s accusation was firm, and he looked around, hoping for agreement.
As he spoke, the others did indeed show expressions of doubt.
Lin Hui gritted her teeth. “I really…”
But even so, she had to admit that the young man had a point.
That’s right, why didn’t I think of getting a new phone back then? Was it really just about the money?
Even Lin Hui herself couldn’t explain it.
However, while Lin Hui’s answer was suspicious, it didn’t prove anything, and it certainly wasn’t enough to label her the “imposter.”
Jiang Yu caught the change in Lin Hui’s expression and made a judgment about something else.
She guessed that since the app could pull them into this bizarre unlimited world without anyone noticing, it wasn’t impossible for it to have also influenced the phone’s owner, weakening their resolve to replace the device.
This could also explain why someone like the professional woman would so easily ignore and then open the app without any suspicion.
Lin Hui continued, “Anyway, I just went on with my work. I remember opening the app on a workday. I was really tired and just wanted to slack off for a bit, so I opened my phone and tapped on it. At that time…”
She bit her lip. “I saw a strange video.”
Jiang Yu couldn’t help but ask, “A strange video?”
Why would she describe it that way?
While Jiang Yu had to admit the opening animation was a bit fantastical, it didn’t seem to warrant such a description.
Lin Hui nodded, looking embarrassed. “I saw… a, uh, strange, bizarre, and unairable… horror-porn animation.”
“…”
The bald man was shocked. “A what now?”
The college student’s face turned bright red. “What’s… horror-porn?”
Lin Hui looked mortified but forced herself to describe the content.
“It was… a stick figure animation. It was about a female employee being sexually harassed at work. But when her boss tricked her into a room, and they… after that, she… she, uh, her boss…”
The young man’s ears turned red. He wanted to listen but was too concerned with his image to be obvious about it.
Seeing Lin Hui hesitate, he grew impatient. “Can you just spit it out? In a situation like this, why are you still so hung up on appearances?”
Lin Hui bit her lip. “She had a… ‘mouth’ like a Venus flytrap down there. It bit her boss in half.”
“…”
The silence that followed was even more profound than before.
Lin Hui’s expression changed as she recalled the memory.
A faint fear appeared in her eyes, along with a sense of discomfort from the recollection.
The imagery was grotesque. Even for her, it was a bit much to handle.
Lin Hui said, “The scene was very bloody and realistic. It didn’t… it didn’t look like a stick figure animation at all. That’s why I called it horror-porn.”
Jiang Yu frowned slightly at Lin Hui’s description. She wasn’t particularly disturbed, but the details were concerning.
She quickly composed herself and was the first to speak. “The video you saw was different from the one I saw.”
Jiang Yu’s words pulled the others from their shocked horror.
They didn’t even have time to discuss the disturbing animation Lin Hui had described. Instead, they nodded in agreement. “Now that you mention it, that’s true.”
Some of them had opened the app a long time ago. After a moment of difficult recollection, one said, “I think so. What I saw wasn’t that.”
Jiang Yu looked at the well-dressed Lin Hui, her eyes glinting. After a moment’s hesitation, she asked softly, “Have you ever experienced something similar?”
Jiang Yu asked this based on her own analysis of the animation she saw and her personal situation, as well as the fact that Lin Hui had shown a subtle dislike for the two men, the young man and the bald man, ever since she woke up.
So, Jiang Yu wondered if the animation Lin Hui saw was also filled with some kind of suggestion, one related to her own experiences.
At Jiang Yu’s question, Lin Hui’s expression changed. But considering the special circumstances, and since Jiang Yu had already guessed, the others would naturally draw their own conclusions. Denying it would be pointless.
So, with a grim look, Lin Hui nodded.
“It is related. So when the animation ended and asked me to make a wish, I filled it in without any hesitation.”
Lin Hui gritted her teeth, a fierce look flashing in her eyes.
She had been working for nearly ten years. She hadn’t always been so assertive. The trials of the workplace and some unwanted harassment had gradually molded her into the person she was now, and had left her with a certain aversion to men.
Lin Hui had encountered workplace sexual harassment more than once, and she wasn’t always able to handle it smoothly.
But even when it came to a direct confrontation, Lin Hui had never backed down.
And even though she had defended herself, it didn’t mean she could forgive those actions.
So, after watching that short film, memories of the past had replayed in her mind, one after another. All her negative emotions had been stirred up, and Lin Hui had typed in her wish without a second thought, almost on pure instinct.
Even if it was just to vent, even if it was just superstition. In that moment, it had felt liberating.
But now…
Because of that momentary release, she had been dragged into a world like this.
Lin Hui bit her lip, unsure if she truly regretted it.
The others looked at each other, and for a moment, no one spoke. The atmosphere grew a little cold.
The young man looked awkward, whether because of how he had targeted Lin Hui earlier or for some other reason.
In contrast, the college student was indignant. “Those scumbags! They should have their ‘tools of the trade’ confiscated!”
At the same time, the young man and the bald man both coughed.
Lin Hui brushed her hair back and let out a breath. “After that, I just went back to work as usual. Nothing special happened until today, when I was pulled into this world.”
“That’s everything I have to report.”
“Oh, by the way, I think I was the first one to wake up. But not much earlier than the rest of you. I only had time to check myself over before you all started waking up.”
The college student quickly added, “That’s right. I was the second one to wake up. I can vouch for her.”
The young man muttered under his breath, “Being the first one to wake up is pretty suspicious.”
Lin Hui raised an eyebrow. “Then why don’t you tell me what’s so suspicious about it? I think you’re the one who’s suspicious.”
Finding himself the target again, the young man quickly backed down, not wanting to argue with Lin Hui.
Jiang Yu didn’t offer any judgment or opinion on Lin Hui. She simply turned to the college student. “Since you were the second to wake up, you can go next.”
