Wei Shu was lying alone at home, on Li Yuanxi’s pillow, breathing in the scent that belonged to her. It was the faint smell of agarwood. It smelled so good, so good that Wei Shu was almost obsessed with it.
Li Yuanxi walked through the woods. The freshly sprouted green leaves swayed in the sea breeze. The green grass on the ground was tender and juicy. With every step, it was crushed underfoot.
Li Yuanxi walked faster and faster, heading towards the place where Wei Shu had found the sand ginger. On the way, she saw porcupine tracks. She inspected the area. Everywhere she looked, there were fresh signs.
Li Yuanxi arrived at a trap she had dug earlier. Before she even got close, she heard a grunting sound. Her eyes brightened, and she eagerly ran over to look.
Two porcupines were stuck in the trap. When they saw her, they let out a startled screech, their quills standing on end. Li Yuanxi walked around the trap. She had no idea how to handle them.
The two porcupines were squeezed together, pricking each other with their quills. They would quickly separate, grunting at each other while keeping an eye on Li Yuanxi at the edge of the trap. They were very busy.
Li Yuanxi poked the two black-and-white porcupines with her pathfinder stick. “Aaaah!!!” Both porcupines screamed in unison, startling Li Yuanxi. She took a step back, watching the porcupines that were about to jump out of the hole. She quickly swung the stick and hit one.
Li Yuanxi swung the stick a few more times, and the porcupines stopped moving. They still watched her warily, rubbing against the dirt in the pit, getting their bodies covered in mud.
Li Yuanxi’s expression turned cold. She raised the stick and brought it down hard. The sharp piece of iron at the end of the stick sank deep into the porcupine’s body. Broken quills scattered on the ground.
She then pulled the stick out of the porcupine’s neck and stopped. The other porcupine was terrified, crashing around in the pit, its head covered in wet mud that kept falling off.
Hot, fresh blood was still steaming. The dead porcupine lay still in the pit. Li Yuanxi looked at the one trying to escape. She took some vines from her basket, planning to catch it alive and take it home.
She made a noose from the vine that would tighten when pulled. She leaned down, getting closer to the porcupine in the pit.
The porcupine in the pit saw a huge creature approaching. It tensed up. When the noose in Li Yuanxi’s hand came down, it shot out like a spring, slamming into the wall of the pit and dazing itself.
Li Yuanxi stood there, holding the noose, speechless as she looked at the groaning porcupine lying in the trap. She thought to herself, If Shu Shu eats this pork, will it affect her intelligence?
Li Yuanxi pulled the porcupine out of the pit and threw it on the ground. She tied the vine around its body, then carefully picked up the dead porcupine from the pit and put it in her basket.
This was a good haul. When she got back, she would keep the live one and butcher the dead one. It would be enough meat for several days.
On her way back, Li Yuanxi kept an eye out for familiar wild vegetables. The tender rape greens she had picked before were now flowering and getting tough.
Now, she didn’t dare bring back just any wild vegetable. She only brought back ones she had eaten before and could identify with certainty.
Li Yuanxi scoured the fertile ground outside the porcupines’ habitat. Finally, she spotted a patch of wild shepherd’s purse that had been gnawed on.
“Hahahahaha…” Li Yuanxi laughed out loud at the sight of the patch of wild shepherd’s purse. This would be enough for her and Shu Shu for seven or eight days.
Wild shepherd’s purse was high in Vitamin C and had no side effects, making it perfect for Wei Shu. Li Yuanxi laughed and covered her forehead. She was laughing happily, but from behind, her silhouette looked heartbreakingly sad.
She took the axe from her belt and carefully dug up the shepherd’s purse. She took the dead porcupine out of her basket and threw it on the ground. After cleaning the basket, she placed the dug-up vegetables inside.
She took all the edible shepherd’s purse she could find. Li Yuanxi lifted the basket, grabbed the dead porcupine, and picked up the vine, dragging the struggling live porcupine home.
She suddenly remembered that Shu Shu had only given her two hours. If she didn’t get home soon, Little Shu would be angry.
However, the Wei Shu who was supposed to be angry was now fast asleep at home. She was wrapped in a blanket, sleeping on Li Yuanxi’s pillow, a faint smile on her lips. She looked peaceful and content.
Li Yuanxi rushed home in a panic. She put the uncleaned porcupine and vegetables on the flat ground. She put the grunting live porcupine back into the temporary pen she had built.
To prevent it from escaping, she tied it to a tree inside the pen. After doing all this, she washed her hands and poked her head cautiously into the cave.
Li Yuanxi craned her neck and looked inside. She saw Wei Shu sleeping on the bed. She breathed a sigh of relief. She went into the cave first to check the fire. When she saw it was fine, she walked over to the bed and knelt on the ground, watching Wei Shu sleep.
Li Yuanxi’s amber eyes were full of tenderness. She placed her hand on Wei Shu’s belly, quietly feeling their child. The baby was just beginning to grow. In two more months, she would be able to feel it move.
Li Yuanxi gently held Wei Shu’s soft, fair fingers and brought them to her lips. Her mind raced, thinking about how to make rescue come a little faster.
The bigger the child grew, the more anxious she became. Only when she looked at Wei Shu could she find a moment of peace. Li Yuanxi lowered her head, rubbing her cheek against Wei Shu’s fingers, and her eyes started to tear up against her will.
The warm tears slid across Wei Shu’s palm. She stirred, slowly opening her eyes. When she tried to raise her hand, she found it was being held.
Wei Shu turned to her side and reached out with her other hand to touch Li Yuanxi’s face. “Why are you crying?” she asked, her voice filled with tenderness and affection.
Li Yuanxi sniffled and shook her head with a smile. “Nothing. I’m just so moved. I never thought I’d have a child of my own in this lifetime.” Even though I really don’t want them to be born. I’m so selfish. I just want you to myself.
Wei Shu never knew Li Yuanxi’s inner thoughts. She rested in Li Yuanxi’s arms and drank some warm water. After resting for a bit, Li Yuanxi crouched down to help her put on her shoes.
They walked out of the cave hand in hand. Wei Shu saw the black and white porcupine in the clearing. The dead one’s body was a little stiff, its quills standing straight up.
Li Yuanxi quickly found a way to skin the porcupine. She wrapped the quills up and buried them so they wouldn’t get pricked.
After finishing that, Li Yuanxi began to gut the porcupine. She took out the organs and put them in a bucket. The porcupine was only about thirty jin. After removing the bones and skin, there was only about twenty jin left.
She cut the bright red meat into pieces and put them in another bucket. She saved all the cut-up bones to make bone broth to help Shu Shu with her calcium.
When an omega was pregnant, calcium and vitamin supplements were essential.
After processing the meat, Li Yuanxi dealt with the innards. Besides the intestines, she put the rest of the scraps and offal in the bucket to use as fishing bait.
Wei Shu sat on the stool, patiently watching Li Yuanxi quickly handle the meat. She was used to seeing this now. She had long since gotten over her squeamishness regarding raw meat.
“Phew… Shu Shu, wait outside for me. I’m going to stew the trotters and bones. We’ll have bone broth for the next couple of days. It’ll be good for your bones.” Li Yuanxi let out a breath, showed the pig trotter to Wei Shu, and then took it back inside.
In the cave, Li Yuanxi blanced the trotters and spare ribs in boiling water, adding a few slices of sand ginger to remove the gamey smell.
She boiled the water for ten minutes to draw out the blood. She fished out the trotters and washed off the scum. Then, she filled the square iron bucket with water, added more sand ginger, and put in the trotters and ribs before carrying it out.
There was a second stove in the clearing outside. She put the iron bucket on the stove and lit the fire again. The stewing began.
“Shu Shu, I’m going to take these scraps and throw them into the sea. Wait for me at home. I’ll be right back.” Li Yuanxi walked over to Wei Shu, kissed her lips, and before Wei Shu could say anything, she picked up the bucket and rushed off again.
Wei Shu frowned, watching Li Yuanxi’s figure disappear down the path. She touched her lips, her expression turning a little cold. “Li Chuyi, you’d better not be avoiding me.”
For the past few days, Li Yuanxi had been exceptionally anxious. Often, when Wei Shu woke up, she would see Li Yuanxi sitting by the fire, mumbling to herself. Whenever Wei Shu asked, she wouldn’t say.
Wei Shu knew Li Yuanxi was under a lot of pressure. She wanted to take her back to civilization immediately, to get her off this island. But she had no way to do it.
So she just tortured herself, punishing herself endlessly behind Wei Shu’s back.
Wei Shu wanted to talk to her, to tell her to relax and stop blaming herself. From the moment they became intimate, Wei Shu had been ready for the possibility of pregnancy.
She just hadn’t expected Li Yuanxi to be so effective that she got pregnant so quickly.
Sometimes, it wasn’t just Li Yuanxi who was scared. Wei Shu was a little scared too. But she was probably handling it a little better than Li Yuanxi, who acted like the sky was falling.
Li Yuanxi jogged through the woods and soon reached the beach. She added more wood to the signal fire to keep it burning. She looked out at the horizon, hoping for a ship to appear.
She stood on the beach for over ten minutes before dejectedly looking away. She carried the bucket to the reef area. Before rescue came, they still had to live.
Li Yuanxi dumped the scraps and intestines into the reef area and washed the blood-stained bucket clean. She continued to scan the horizon.
She watched for a long time, but finally went home. The moment she got back, she grabbed Wei Shu and wouldn’t let go. Wei Shu, who had been planning to be mad, lost all her steam. Instead, she had to comfort her alpha.
“A ship will come eventually. You have to believe in yourself,” Wei Shu said, holding Li Yuanxi’s face and looking into her red-rimmed eyes.
Li Yuanxi sniffled and couldn’t help crying. “Really?”
“Of course, it’s true. You’re the greatest Li Yuanxi. Have a little faith in yourself.” Wei Shu pressed her forehead against Li Yuanxi’s, releasing a bit of her pheromones to wrap around her. Li Yuanxi cried for a while, and her emotions slowly calmed down.
Li Yuanxi stopped crying. She hugged Wei Shu and whispered a lot of things in her ear. Thinking about how the weather was warming up, she asked, “Do you want to go watch the sunset tomorrow?”
Wei Shu thought for a second. “Let’s go.” She hadn’t watched the sunset on the beach in a long time. Later, as her belly grew, it would be even harder to go. She had to take the chance now.
A little over an hour later, the trotter and rib soup was ready. The moment Li Yuanxi lifted the lid, Wei Shu could smell the aroma. She swallowed and waited for Li Yuanxi to bring her some.
