Wang Ya said in a deep voice, “It’s not that I have to go to the Ghost Family. It’s that they went too far!” Her low tone carried a ruthless determination.
Zhang Qingshui said no more and directly hung up the phone.
Wang Ya stared out the window with a grim expression, a murderous aura emanating from her entire body.
It wasn’t that she naively thought she could uproot the Ghost Family in one go, nor that she had to throw herself into their trap. She simply had no other choice.
The Ghost Family had harmed her Grandma, and she had killed one of theirs—they were already locked in a death feud. The Ghost Family was dead set on getting the Feng Family’s items, and they held her Birth Chart in their hands. Even if Wang Ya had ways to prevent them from directly cursing her with the Birth Chart, she couldn’t stop them from seeking out experts in divination to track her whereabouts and chase her down. From the moment she left the airport, how many people had tailed her with murderous intent? Even her ally, Zhang Qingshui, wouldn’t help her. The only reasons Zhang Qingshui had shown up were two: first, Wang Ya held Zheng Yanxia’s Birth Chart, and with Zhang Qingshui’s deep friendship with Zheng Yanxia plus her witness to the Soul Detention Technique, she certainly wouldn’t want Wang Ya to threaten Zheng Yanxia. Most importantly, it was all for the Yin Spirit Scroll in her possession. Without the Ghost Family and those lurking in the shadows tailing her so closely, Zhang Qingshui probably would have made her move already. Now, everyone was following her but holding back, waiting for the right moment—hoping someone else would strike first so they could reap the benefits.
The car sped along the highway in the dead of night, unusually quiet.
Wang Cheng’an, exhausted after fussing for so long, leaned his head against the seat and fell asleep. Wang Ya feared the car’s air conditioning would chill him, so she took off her jacket and draped it over him.
A little past three in the morning, the car exited the highway and turned onto a county road.
Wang Ya knew that along the way, the Ghost Family must have pinpointed her destination based on her direction. She didn’t want them causing trouble en route, so she affixed a Zhang Evil-Suppressing Talisman to the car.
The night outside grew darker, fog blanketing everything, visibility extremely low. When the car turned onto the rural path, the headlights only pierced three or four meters ahead. The speed dropped to just over twenty kilometers per hour as it crawled along the path.
Old Tang suddenly spoke up. “Something’s off outside. Where the hell are we?” His mobile phone rang; he glanced at the caller ID and picked up.
Wang Ya heard the driver reply, “Navigation says three kilometers to go.” Then Zhang Qingshui’s voice came through the phone: “Stop the car.”
Old Tang quickly told the driving bodyguard, “Stop the car.”
Wang Ya put her jacket back on, then pinched Wang Cheng’an’s nose and covered his mouth until he woke up sputtering. She got out of the car and said to Old Tang, “Old Tang, you’ve brought us this far. Head back now.” She saw Zhang Qingshui step out of the car that had been tailing them closely and walk toward her. The two old men who always followed Zhang Qingshui got out too—one scanned the surroundings warily, the other kept pinching his fingers in calculation.
Zhang Qingshui stood before Wang Ya and said, “This should be Ghost Family territory.” She wore high heels, making her slightly taller than Wang Ya, looking down at her just a bit.
Wang Ya glanced at Zhang Qingshui’s height, then at her heels, her face expressionless. “Then farewell forever.” She turned to call out to the yawning Wang Cheng’an beside her. “Let’s go. There are ghosts on the road—stick close to me.”
Wang Cheng’an immediately whined in displeasure. “Why do we have to catch ghosts again!” He wore an expression screaming I’m sick of tagging along to catch ghosts, looking at Wang Ya pitifully. “Can I wait here for you?”
Wang Ya said, “No.” She pulled out a Lotus Guiding Talisman from her pocket and activated it, following the talisman forward.
Wang Cheng’an trailed behind Wang Ya reluctantly. She took a step, and he took one right after, practically stepping in her footprints. His head bobbed like a chick pecking rice; he was on the verge of collapsing asleep right there.
The sky was pitch black, Yin Qi thick around them. Even with her Night Vision cultivation, Wang Ya’s sight was limited to the two square meters covered by the Lotus Guiding Talisman.
Wang Ya sensed ghosts lurking nearby, but they never approached, and she ignored them. To her surprise, neither Zhang Qingshui’s group nor those following behind caught up to stop her from heading to the Ghost Family.
After walking for about five or six minutes, Wang Ya suddenly sensed movement behind her. She turned and saw Wang Cheng’an sitting by the roadside, head drooped as he dozed off. She walked over to him. “Don’t throw a tantrum!”
Wang Cheng’an fumed and shouted, “You said we were ghost hunting, but wouldn’t let me sleep. You’ve been going back and forth on this road four times already—I won’t walk with you anymore!” He crossed his legs, dropped his head, and went right back to sleep!
